NEW YORK (CNNfn) - One of Wall Street's worst weeks on record ended with more losses Friday amid signs that last week's deadly terrorist attacks took a big economic toll.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 14.2 percent this week, its worst five-day performance since the Great Depression. And its drop of nearly 1,370 points was its biggest one-week point drop ever.

Portugal's priests have been called in to preach the virtues of the euro as the country struggles to prepare peasants in outlying villages for the change of currency on January 1.

Father Luis Oliveira, a priest who covers several poor villages in the southern Alentejo region, is among the new euro-evangelists in the Portuguese church who pack fake euro notes and euro leaflets alongside their Bibles when they set off to see parishioners.

Father Oliveira said his main concern was protecting poor, illiterate and trusting farmers from con artists. "There are isolated places in the mountains where hardly anybody ever goes. These people are very simple and humble and often do not know how to read. They keep their money at home, with four hens and three goats, and never use a bank."

Many of his parishioners were not sure when the euro would come into circulation and had already been conned by people offering to change their escudos.

The church began its campaign in March after it was approached by the government's euro commission, which realised it was not reaching everybody.

The commission argued that priests were ideal missionaries for the new currency as they had the respect and trust of the devout people of the countryside.

Now, after Mass, priests and parishioners can often be found gathered around a briefcase full of ersatz euros for a quick lesson in the new currency.

NEW YORK (CNNmoney) - TOMORROW, TOMORROW Earnings will come out, tomorrow. (OK, it's a little off-tune, but isn't everything these days?) And at least right now, we're betting our bottom dollar (plus lots of other dollars) that there will be more earnings tomorrow. Despite word from the Fed that 9/11 "sharply reduced" economic activity -- I think we knew that already -- and despite cries that the Nasdaq has rallied too far, too fast, it climbed another 27.10 today to 1,731.54. As for the dear old Dow, despite lots of depressing earnings news, it managed to hang onto a 5.54 gain, landing at 9,345.62. 'Til tomorrow!
