Not to trivialize such a critical press conference, but TV types were quick to notice the hypnotic qualities of President Bush's polka-dot tie, creating wavy lines on TV and the Internet. "His tie is worse than it is on the tube!" says Jim, who was watching the presser on WhiteHouse.gov. Note to Bush handlers: TV anchors know to avoid intricate patterns that upset TV scan lines.

The first thing my 14 year old son noticed about Bush's third prime time press conference was his pulsing tie. The silver or grey tie was flashing in a rainbow of colors. "This is distracting. I can't watch this," my son complained, trying to get back to his video games from this forced watching of an historic event."

"It must be the camera. I'll try a different station," I replied, switching to Fox, which, the day before, had much better audio than CNN. Yesterday I assumed that Fox got a favored microphone placement, while CNN had to use a more remote one, producing lesser quality audio. But the tie was strobing the same on Fox, on CBS... and I figured they were all using the same video feed. But by then, we'd been distracted from hearing the first minute or two of the speech.

I tried to focus on the top half of the screen. This made it even more obvious that Bush was reading from his script, with minimal eye contact. He droned on. It became clear that this was all a delay tactic to cut into the time he'd have to answer questions. How many times and how many ways can you say "the evildoers hate our democracy," or "we will stay the course," or "things have been tough but we are committed."

These kinds of delay tactics are called sandbagging, I explained to my son. "It's sooo boring," he moaned. Agreeing, I nodded my head, saying, "He's hoping a lot of the viewers will give up and tune out before he gets to the part where the reporters ask him questions."

The pulsing tie caught my eye again. That tie is driving me nut. I can't watch it," my son complained. "It's subliminally pulsing at about the same brain-wave frequency that can set up epileptic seizures," I explained. I didn't mention it, but even if it doesn't set off seizures, the flashing can be very unpleasant. You may have noticed it on some news websites. I can't stand it when I encounter those flashing banners and usually scroll down or change the page when I see them. i figure this was another way to cut down on viewers. Bush does NOT want to be seen answering questions in an impromptu manner.

Bush droned on for about 18 minutes-- fifty percent longer than originally planned. Then the questions started.

It was great to see that real journalist, not plants were, for the most part, called upon (only one Fox "journalist" was called on, and no members of the religious press.) And it seemed, for an evening, at least, that the mainstream press reporters were actually manifesting stirring signs of possessing testicles. They asked some fairly tough questions. 

The problem was, Bush danced, stumbled and evaded his way through the press conference. He refused to take responsibility for any mistakes, refused to apologize, didn't explain why he was answering 911 questions with Cheney cozily sitting next to him. The press conference proved that the mainstream media could ask decent questions and that Bush wouldn't answer them. Only one journalist repeated his question that Bush failed to answer. The rest let him pontificate on and on along the same repetitive themes-- they are bad, we are good, we will stay the course.

Bush failed to give us any idea about what strategy he has for dealing with the Iraq quagmire. He denied that the uprisings of the last week were any kind of problem. "Al Sadr must answer charges against him and disband his illegal militia," Bush naively stated. He ignored the fact that the different, previously antagonist forces within Iraq have thrown out their differences and joined forces in response against a US that undemocratically shut down a dissident newspaper.

All in all,  the result was a very un-satisfying exercise in BS. The big three networks, within minutes whipped back to their regular sit-com scheduling. CNN dumped a batch of victims of the war and families of soldiers killed in the war to be interviewed by Larry King. I guess that's better than a Tammy Faye Baker re-run. Fox put up some right wing pundits who, in baritone voices (including the women) chorused how strong Bush was.

The morning after, CNN's American Morning  covers the latest accusations of child molestation, ABC does a collage on how people are eating fast food with high calories. "You just have to get some good caloric education behind you." the latest diet book author prompted. Katie Couric, wearing glasses,  interviews Goran Visnjic, star of the mini-series Spartacus, filmed in Bulgaria. Don Imus, on MSNBC has Author Mary Higgins Clark on.  Air America talks about a pet dog..

The morning after a fake press conference, the press is still asleep. Be careful. Remember the fields in Oz that Dorothy and her tin man, lion and scarecrow walked through, that lulled them to sleep?  The media response to the Iraq quagmire can do it to you. If they switch to reports on Michael Jackson, kidnapped children, surgical separation of conjoined twins, the Lacey Peterson murder or the Koby Bryant trials, consider these distractions and change the channel.

Stay focused. A Fox reporter commented that Bush is noted for staying on message. That's what he did last night-- stayed on message while ignoring the questions. That is not satisfying. The message for Americans who  chose their country of corporations or religious fanaticism (Christian, Jewish or Muslim) must stay on is clear. Get out the vote, support Kerry, and throw Bush out of the White house and right wingers out of congress.

Bush's tie "not appropriate"

A new discussion has begun over what is and is not acceptable on American television. This time round however, the concerns are not to do with "nipplegate"-style exposed flesh; indeed, it's now clothes that are coming in for criticism.

The tie selected by President Bush for his Tuesday night press conference is the subject of this particular issue. Unfortunately, the tie - a charming blue-with-white-dots number - induced moiré patterns on TV and this, some pundits are saying, was completely inappropriate.

E! News quotes Jim Hill, assistant professor of journalism at Calstate and a former CNN correspondent, as remarking that the tie "was not appropriate for television," because Bush had "some serious issues to explain."

That'll be another "wardrobe malfunction," then.

The first thing you got was the tie.

 

You lost the importance of the press conference. You lost the fact that Bush had only done two of these prime time gigs in his entire term, and that he hates them because he isn't good at them. You lost the fact that the 9/11 Commission had been punching him and his administration around the room for the last couple of weeks. You lost the fact that September 11 had been demystified, that the going wisdom now says it could have been stopped by an administration that was actually paying attention. You lost the fact that almost 80 American soldiers and something like 900 Iraqis had been killed in the last month of fighting, that almost 700 American soldiers have been killed since the invasion was undertaken, and that, oh by the way, there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

 

You lost all of that and were left with the tie around Bush's neck, the gray spotted tie that was flashing and heliographing in the camera's eye like something out of a Hunter S. Thompson fever dream, the mesmerizing swirl of reds and yellows and purples and blues that left the whole press conference behind in a hypnotizing, dazzling, inebriating swirl of flummoxed technology which almost certainly caused Americans from sea to shining sea to lean towards their televisions and exclaim, "Holy Christ, Marjorie, look at the man's necktie!"

 

But then the shock of the collision between necktie and television wore off, and you were left with the man, and his words, and certainly the most ridiculous press conference since Al Haig blithered about being in charge after Hinckley put a bullet into Ronald Reagan. They sacked Haig pretty much on the spot after that sad display. Would that the American people in the year of our Lord 2004 could be so lucky.

 

Leaving aside the fact that Bush sounded for all the world like he was speaking through a mouthful of glue - and they say John Kerry is boring on the stump? - the preamble to this train wreck of a press conference is worthy of some analysis:

 

GWB: This has been tough weeks in that country.

 

WRP: Huh?

 

GWB: Coalition forces have encountered serious violence in some areas of Iraq.

 

WRP: You don't say.

 

GWB: In the south of Iraq, coalition forces face riots and attacks that are being incited by a radical cleric named al-Sadr.

 

WRP: And you know why? Because your goober proconsul Paul Bremer shut down al-Sadr's piddly little tabloid newspaper on April 4, giving this pampered brat more street cred than he ever had before. He had plenty of people to whip into a frenzy against American forces, George, because your whole project in Iraq has been utterly devoid of meaning, direction, or even coherent planning. You went and made a free-speech martyr out of al-Sadr by closing down his newspaper, lighting a fuse that has left dozens of Americans and hundreds of Iraqis dead. Kudos, Chief.

 

GWB: As a proud, independent people, Iraqis do not support an indefinite occupation, and neither does America. We're not an imperial power, as nations such as Japan and Germany can attest. We're a liberating power, as nations in Europe and Asia can attest as well.

 

WRP: Brilliant. American military forces remain in Germany and Japan to this very day. That's not much of an object lesson. As for being a 'liberating power' in Asia, I can't imagine you are referring to Vietnam, Cambodia or Laos.

 

GWB: Were the coalition to step back from the June 30th pledge, many Iraqis would question our intentions and feel their hopes betrayed. And those in Iraq who trade in hatred and conspiracy theories would find a larger audience and gain a stronger hand.

 

WRP: I can't be sure how up on current events you are, George, but that horse pretty much left the barn.

 

GWB: In Fallujah, coalition forces have suspended offensive operations, allowing members of the Iraqi Governing Council and local leaders to work on the restoration of central authority in that city. These leaders are communicating with the insurgents to ensure an orderly turnover of that city to Iraqi forces, so that the resumption of military action does not become necessary.

 

WRP: Translation - American forces were totally shocked by the fury of the Iraqi people after this catastrophe of a military adventure, further shocked by the alliance between Shia and Sunni, and betrayed by ham-handed actions like Bremer's decision to shut down al-Sadr's nothing newspaper. Because the Iraqi fighters seemed perfectly capable of killing dozens of Americans at will, and because this was a political mess for you right during election season, you were forced to sue for a 'cease-fire' with the people you had supposedly defeated. The result of this will be an Iraqi military opposition in Falluja and Najaf that has had time to regroup and rearm. Congratulations. You're about to get even more people killed.

 

GWB: The violence we are seeing in Iraq is familiar. The terrorists who take hostages or plants a roadside bomb near Baghdad is serving the same ideology of murder that kills innocent people on trains in Madrid, and murders children on buses in Jerusalem, and blows up a nightclub in Bali and cuts the throat of a young reporter for being a Jew. We've seen the same ideology of murder in the killing of 241 Marines in Beirut, the first attack on the World Trade Center, in the destruction of two embassies in Africa, in the attack on the USS Cole, and in the merciless horror inflicted upon thousands of innocent men and women and children on September the 11th, 2001.

 

WRP: Two problems, one of which is the same grammar catastrophe you appear incapable of avoiding. You say "The terrorists who...is serving..." Come on, George. "The terrorists who...are serving..." is the way to work that English language. Make it yours, George. Work it. Beyond that, the fact that you have again connected Iraq to September 11 - and, boy, Beirut was just out of nowhere - is shameful and disgraceful. Just stop. This has been batted down more times than a Serena Williams forehand.

 

GWB: The terrorists have lost the shelter of the Taliban and the training camps in Afghanistan. They have lost safe havens in Pakistan.

 

WRP: Um, no. Because you took the best troops out of Afghanistan and threw them into Iraq, the Taliban and al Qaeda are pretty much running around free there again. They have free and open access to Pakistan for the same reason. I hear the heroin crop in Afghanistan this year is going to be simply divine, which works in your favor if you think about it. After all, what good is a severe economic downturn if there isn't cheap access to good smack?

 

GWB: They lost an ally in Baghdad.

 

WRP: They never had an ally in Baghdad. Again, this allegation has been disproven more times than Piltdown man. You need to get some new material, George. I suggest invading France immediately. It's not like those cheese-eating surrender monkeys were dead-bang right about this invasion being a disaster in the making. A good military stomping will shut them up, and you can bring back the Freedom Fries fad.

 

GWB: We will succeed in Iraq. We're carrying out a decision that has already been made and will not change.

 

WRP: Yup, you made the decision the day you showed up in Washington with your band of neocon Vulcans. Never let pesky things like facts get in the way of a decision that has already been made.

 

That's about as much of that as anyone could stand. My mother had called me by this point screaming, "This is a President? I feel like I want to cry!" I had to break it to her that the worst was yet to come. The press were about to get their shot. Seldom in human history have so many pointed questions gone so amazingly unanswered. Some examples which speak for themselves:

 

QUESTION: Mr. President, before the war, you and members of your administration made several claims about Iraq: that U.S. troops would be greeted as liberators with sweets and flowers; that Iraqi oil revenue would pay for most of the reconstruction; and that Iraq not only had weapons of mass destruction but, as Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld said, we know where they are. How do you explain to Americans how you got that so wrong? And how do you answer your opponents who say that you took this nation to war on the basis of what have turned out to be a series of false premises?

 

GWB: Well, let me step back and review my thinking prior to going into Iraq. First, the lesson of September the 11th is that when this nation sees a threat, a gathering threat, we got to deal with it. We can no longer hope that oceans protect us from harm. Every threat we must take seriously. Saddam Hussein was a threat. He was a threat because he had used weapons of mass destruction on his own people. He was a threat because he coddled terrorists. He was a threat because he funded suiciders. He was a threat to the region. He was a threat to the United States.

 

And we've been there a year. I know that seems like a long time. It seems like a long time to the loved ones whose troops have been overseas. But when you think about where the country has come from, it's a relatively short period of time. And we're making progress. There's no question it's been a tough, tough series of weeks for the American people. It's been really tough for the families. I understand that. It's been tough on this administration. But we're doing the right thing. And as to whether or not I made decisions based upon polls, I don't. I just don't make decisions that way. I fully understand the consequences of what we're doing. We're changing the world, and the world will be better off and America will be more secure as a result of the actions we're taking.

 

WRP: Ooooookay...raise your hand if you see an answer in there? There are no weapons of mass destruction, despite the fact that Rumsfeld said he knew where they were - and it bears mention that Bush referred to Rumsfeld in his preamble as the Secretary of State. We were hardly welcomed as liberators, and the oil infrastructure is in total disarray. No answers from George. And as far as "We're changing the world" goes, George, there's an old saying: Any jackass can knock down a barn. You change the barn when you smash it, but not many people would label it an improvement. Good thing your triumphalist streak is under control, though.

 

Moving on:

 

QUESTION: Mr. President, why are you and the vice president insisting on appearing together before the 9-11 commission? And, Mr. President, who will we be handing the Iraqi government over to on June 30th?

 

GWB: We'll find that out soon. That's what Mr. Brahimi is doing. He's figuring out the nature of the entity we'll be handing sovereignty over. And, secondly, because the 9-11 commission wants to ask us questions, that's why we're meeting. And I look forward to meeting with them and answering their questions.

 

FOLLOW-UP: I was asking why you're appearing together, rather than separately, which was their request.

 

GWB: Because it's a good chance for both of us to answer questions that the 9-11 commission is looking forward to asking us. And I'm looking forward to answering them.

 

WRP: The talking heads before this press conference were saying it was absolutely, positively vital for Bush to deliver some sort of coherent plan for the immediate future of Iraq, including the handover. Here was a perfect opportunity to explain that plan, and George punted. You'll know when I know, hyuk hyuk hyuk. As for the whole thing about Bush and Cheney appearing together, the answer is pretty plain. George doesn't know much of anything about how his administration is being run, as was made horrifyingly clear in this event. Dick needs to be there to work the strings. The 9/11 Commission couldn't do much with "I love America, I love freedom, I love America, freedom, America, democracy, pzzzzcheeeeezzzz..." That's about all Bush could give them without a wingman.

 

Moving on:

 

QUESTION: In the last campaign, you were asked a question about the biggest mistake you'd made in your life, and you used to like to joke that it was trading Sammy Sosa. You've looked back before 9-11 for what mistakes might have been made. After 9-11, what would your biggest mistake be, would you say, and what lessons have learned from it?

 

GWB: I wish you'd have given me this written question ahead of time so I could plan for it. John, I'm sure historians will look back and say, gosh, he could've done it better this way or that way. You know, I just -- I'm sure something will pop into my head here in the midst of this press conference, with all the pressure of trying to come up with answer, but it hadn't yet. I would've gone into Afghanistan the way we went into Afghanistan. Even knowing what I know today about the stockpiles of weapons, I still would've called upon the world to deal with Saddam Hussein. See, I'm of the belief that we'll find out the truth on the weapons. That's why we sent up the independent commission. I look forward to hearing the truth as to exactly where they are. They could still be there. They could be hidden, like the 50 tons of mustard gas in a turkey farm.

 

One of the things that Charlie Duelfer talked about was that he was surprised of the level of intimidation he found amongst people who should know about weapons and their fear of talking about them because they don't want to be killed. You know, there's this kind of -- there's a terror still in the soul of some of the people in Iraq. They're worried about getting killed, and therefore they're not going to talk. But it'll all settle out, John. We'll find out the truth about the weapons at some point in time. However, the fact that he had the capacity to make them bothers me today just like it would have bothered me then. He's a dangerous man. He's a man who actually not only had weapons of mass destruction -- the reason I can say that with certainty is because he used them. And I have no doubt in my mind that he would like to have inflicted harm, or paid people to inflict harm, or trained people to inflict harm, on America, because he hated us. I hope -- I don't want to sound like I have made no mistakes. I'm confident I have. I just haven't -- you just put me under the spot here, and maybe I'm not as quick on my feet as I should be in coming up with one.

 

WRP: So much of this question and answer sums up the entire issue that squats incoherently before the American people, and never mind the tacit admission that he is helpless if he doesn't get the questions beforehand. Even Nixon admitted making mistakes. Have you made any mistakes, George? The Towers came down, the Taliban and al Qaeda are back in force in Afghanistan, there are about 700 dead American soldiers and well over 10,000 dead Iraqis in the Middle East, there are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, they had nothing to do with September 11, Osama bin Laden has been given this great gift because we invaded a Muslim country on a nonexistent pretext, and by the way we failed to catch the guy "Dead or Alive," we have manufactured thousands more terrorists with this invasion, the budget is annihilated, the Homeland Security Department is a total boondoggle...nope, I can't think of any mistakes. By the way, the Iraqi WMDs are hidden at a turkey farm. Pass it on.

 

The tie only worked for a minute. After that, the only thing hypnotizing on the television was this small fraction of a man playing at being Presidential while the world crashes down around his ears.

 

God help us all.

Noah followed the tradition of his righteous ancestor Enoch, and while the "Seven Laws of Noah" were kept by Enoch and by Adam, they were called Noahide laws because of the Covenant, made with Noah by the LORD God after the Flood, and because an additional law was added at that time, forbidding cruelty to animals, and the eating of a limb of a living animal, and the eating of blood. Noah's Seven Laws for Universal Humanity

The Rainbow Covenant

All humanity on the Earth as well as the creatures of the land were uprooted and destroyed by the waters of the Flood in Noah's time. Noah and his family alone along with the selected animal species remained afloat on the waters until G-D's fury subsided. The reason for the destruction was no regard for the six basic laws given to Adam and Eve and their descendants. In other words, humanity had become so corrupt that no repair was possible. When the waters subsided and Noah and his family along with all the animals made their way back into the world, Noah made offerings and G-D caused a rainbow to appear and said that it would be an eternal sign of the covenant between Me, and you (Noah) and the Earth. That rainbow covenant symbolized a vow that G-D would never again bring a flood into the world to destroy all flesh. The Almighty gave to Noah Seven Laws to regulate human societal behavior (the relationships between G-D and individuals and person to person). They form the basis for an overall G-dly society among the human race that has been created in G-D's image. The members of such an ideal society are known as ben (son of) or bat (daughter of) Noach (Righteous Gentiles).

It's said by rabbis and scholars of the Torah and Talmud that to actually see a rainbow is something negative. It means that there is the need for judgment, but there is restraint from on High. It is known that in the generation of the Rashbi (Rabbi Shimon Bar Yohai) that a rainbow was never seen due to his extraordinary holiness - he protected the world. This was in the the mid-2nd century CE.

The Seven Laws of Noah are directly taken from the first of the five books of the Torah which is called Genesis (Bereishis). The Torah is the first and holiest section of the Bible. These Seven Laws are binding upon all non-Jewish humanity. The descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who are known as the Jewish people received the Torah from G-D directly with an additional set of laws that are binding upon them. The Jewish people have a total category of laws that number 613.

G-d intends for us to live in harmony with each other and with the rest of His creation. In order to ensure that all our efforts are channeled in a positive, constructive direction, He established a set of laws by which we are to live our lives. Unfortunately, there are those that selfishly choose to rebel against G-d and work toward destructive ends. Without having a means to enforce the Laws, we would be unable to maintain social order and provide for the good of humanity. Therefore, the existence of courts of justice is necessary to enforce G-d's commandments.

It is a critical error to think that laws are oppressive and exist only to punish people. The Seven Laws are an intrinsic part of G-d's blueprint for creation; they serve as the foundation of moral behavior that, when followed, promote the well-being of all. This fact has been recognized by the U.S. government. In March of 1991, President George Bush signed into law a Congressional resolution (H.J. Resolution 104, Public Law 102-14) stating that "...ethical values and principles have been the bedrock of society from the dawn of civilization, when they were known as the Seven Noahide Laws; ...without these ethical values and principles the edifice of civilization stands in serious peril of returning to chaos..." It goes on to state that Americans must not "lose sight of their responsibility to transmit these historical ethical values from our distinguished past to the generations of the future...." The Seven Laws must therefore be the basis of our legal system, and we need courts to enforce these laws.

To understand the concern of these so-called anti-messianists, consider that only a few men in Jewish history have been revered as the messiah after their deaths. One was Jesus. Another was Sabbatai Zevi, who won hundreds of thousands of followers across Palestine and Eastern Europe after publicly declaring himself the messiah in 1665. (Zevi's death was, relatively speaking, a small challenge to his adherents, who had already chosen to stick by him after his conversion to Islam.)

Lubavitch is insignificant in terms of the global Jewish population, accounting for just a couple hundred thousand people, but it plays an outsize role in worldwide Jewish life.

Unlike other, insular Hasidic movements, the Lubavitch credo, articulated repeatedly by Rebbe Schneerson himself, calls for encouraging secular Jews to become more observant. Between its emissaries and far-flung outposts (last year alone, Lubavitch opened 34 Jewish schools around the world), the movement has almost certainly done more to promote the growth of Judaism than any other organization. ( See House Joint Resolution 104, Public Law 102-14, SENATE 1991)It is this last fact that makes the dispute between messianists and anti-messianists more than a communal squabble. ''What people have not yet grasped is that this is a watershed event in the history of Judaism,'' says David Berger, a professor of Jewish history at Brooklyn College and the author of an unusually vitriolic academic book attacking Lubavitch messianism. ''People will eventually come to see this moment in apocalyptic terms.''

Chaim Meyer Lieberman, a tall man with a long, graying beard, traces his roots back to the beginning of the Hasidic movement in 18th-century Poland.

 When World War II broke out, his parents headed for Russia, figuring the climate would be less hostile to Orthodox Jews. By 1949, when Lieberman was born, they had been fortunate enough to survive the Holocaust and find their way to a displaced-persons camp in France.

In 1954, shortly after Rebbe Schneerson was named grand rabbi, the Liebermans joined the nascent Lubavitch community in New York. Although Schneerson's predecessor had escaped to Brooklyn during World War II, many of his followers had been trapped in Europe. This meant that the rebbe inherited a movement decimated by Hitler and Stalin.

In the 1950's, Schneerson set about rebuilding Lubavitch in a small section of Crown Heights. Lieberman came of age as the movement was being reborn. By the time he was a teenager, there were thousands of Lubavitchers living in Crown Heights, and thousands more coming every week to hear Schneerson's stirring sermons. The rebbe himself rarely left Brooklyn, but he sent emissaries, a sort of Jewish Peace Corps, into the darkest corners of the world to rekindle the embers of Judaism.

Schneerson's reputation soon transcended the movement, yet even as his fame grew and it became almost impossible to get an audience with him, Lieberman felt a close connection to his rebbe. ''He took a personal interest in my life,'' he tells me one recent afternoon in his grand if slightly rundown Tudor house on Eastern Parkway, less than a block away from 770. His wife has set out pistachio nuts and sunflower seeds on the oversize dining table. The youngest of his 17 children, a 4-year-old, is doing laps around the room and shrieking.

In 1968, Lieberman participated in the building of the synagogue in the basement of 770, which was formerly a medical clinic. Today Lieberman refuses to pray there during the Sabbath, when the messianism reaches its most fevered pitch, opting instead for one of the community's nonmessianic synagogues. ''It's such an abomination,'' he says in disgust. ''My blood pressure goes through the roof when I walk in there.''

When the rebbe was alive, just about every Lubavitcher, Lieberman included, was confident he was the messiah. Because all Lubavitchers consider the messianic era to be imminent, it stands to reason that every generation would believe that its particular rebbe might be the messiah. Even given this predisposition, though, the movement's faith in the messianic potential of Schneerson, who was childless, was always uncommonly strong. This was partly a matter of historical context. When the rebbe took the reins of the movement, the Jewish people had just survived the worst calamity in their 3,000-year history -- a propitious moment for them to be delivered from the sufferings of their exile.

As the years passed, the Lubavitch community became increasingly convinced that their rebbe met all of the requirements, laid out by Maimonides, to be the Jewish messiah.

Had Nothing to do with the Father in Heaven

 Most significant was his emphasis on outreach. ''Maimonides said the messiah would be a Jewish leader who will 'repair the breaches,''' one messianic rabbi, Eli Cohen, told me, ''or fix that which is missing in Jewish observance, and that's what the rebbe did.'' World events -- specifically the fall of the Soviet Union, which had suppressed the practice of Judaism, and the struggle over Israel -- fanned the community's messianic flames.

But that consensus was ruptured on the night of June 12, 1994. Lieberman remembers hearing the blare of the horn used to signal the end of the Sabbath. Only the Sabbath had ended hours earlier. The rebbe had suffered a stroke a few months before, and Lieberman correctly feared the worst.

Hustling over to 770, he saw hundreds of Lubavitchers converging outside. Some wept; others, however, were gleeful, downing vodka, dancing and singing Yechi. Lieberman was stunned. As his grief turned to anger, he spoke to a prominent rabbi in the community, who stood near him. ''How can you stand by here when you see this display,'' he remembers saying to the rabbi, ''and not open up your mouth?''

Though he'd been sick for years, the rebbe's death came as a shock to the community. Some Lubavitchers, like Lieberman, started the process of accepting the reality that their messiah in waiting was gone. ''Sure I felt disappointment, but you have to move on,'' Lieberman says. ''What can one say other than that life is not always what you want it to be?'' But many clung stubbornly to their faith, insisting that the rebbe never really died or that the process of redemption was under way and that the rebbe would soon return and be revealed as the messiah. ''Exactly how this is going to come about we really don't know,'' Rabbi Cohen says. ''What we do know is that if you open your eyes, you can see that bit by bit it's coming to pass.''

What started as a fissure between the community's messianists and anti-messianists has gradually opened into a canyon, with each side insisting that it is the true heir to the rebbe's vision. Over the years, the conflict between the two factions has also become one of propaganda, with rival publishing houses, magazines and bookstores. There are also endless semantic distinctions between the two factions, the most common of which is that anti-messianists write ''Of Blessed Memory'' after the rebbe's name, (Schlita, see Bush-ka's HJR 104, Publik Law 102-14) while messianists insist on ''Long Live King Messiah.'' There is even a Lubavitch version of the school-prayer debate, over whether the yeshivas should encourage students to sing Yechi. (Some do, some don't.)

The messianists, who say they believe they can hasten the rebbe's return by persuading as many people as possible that he is the messiah, promote their agenda in the streets, proselytizing regularly in non-Lubavitch neighborhoods, approaching strangers and prodding them to recite Yechi. Their calls are echoed by two messianic talk-radio shows, ''Living With Moshiach'' (the Hebrew word for messiah) and ''Moshiach in the Air.''

 Still, for most Jews today, observant and secular alike, the very concept of a messiah has become, at most, a metaphorical one. Nowhere is the divide between messianists and anti-messianists more visible than at the hallowed 770, a site holy enough to have inspired an exact replica in Israel. Not only have the messianists assumed ownership of the synagogue, hanging messianic banners inside and in several instances physically attacking anti-messianists (Hate Crimes)  who tried to remove them; they have also vandalized the dedication plaque on the building's facade, scratching out the Hebrew acronym for ''Of Blessed Memory'' after the rebbe's name.

Though there are no numerical breakdowns of the two factions, during the weeks I spent in and around Crown Heights, it seemed as if the majority of the community is messianic. Nevertheless, in addition to the anti-messianists, there are plenty of messianists who worry that aggressively advertising their message will push people away from Judaism altogether and are thus reluctant to directly address the question. ''There are definitely disagreements about publicizing it,'' one especially outspoken (or ''hot'') messianist told me, ''but I think everybody agrees that the rebbe is moshiach.'' Whether or not this is true, there is a practical concern here: Lubavitch raises hundreds of millions of dollars a year from non-Hasidic Jewish philanthropists like Ronald Perelman and Ronald Lauder.

Perhaps for these reasons, perhaps because it is difficult to campaign about not believing in something, the anti-messianists, rather than battling it out shout-for-shout in the streets, are focusing primarily on image control.

 Long term, of course, the anti-messianists would like to win over as many people inside the movement as possible. But in the short term, there are perceptions to manage, which means convincing the outside world that the epidemic has at least been contained.

Locally, this means trying to quietly urge messianists to take down the huge yellow banners emblazoned with a crown -- the symbol of ''King Messiah'' -- that hang from many of their windows, and to stop plastering their cars with messianic bumper stickers. (A popular one features the rebbe's crinkled face -- the fluffy white beard and piercing blue eyes -- alongside the word ''Yechi.'') Outside the community, the anti-messianists spin. A P.R. contact for the movement was eager to set me up with a few Lubavitchers who were quick to play down the presence of the messianists.

Behind the scenes, meanwhile, the anti-messianists are fighting for control of the various Lubavitch institutions. ''It has to be done without making a big commotion in the community,'' Lieberman says, pointing out that the New York Lubavitch youth committee has recently marginalized a few of the more aggressive messianists, including Rabbi Cohen, who is no longer in charge of student outreach at New York University. ''N.Y.U. is a major university,'' Lieberman says. ''We can't make fools out of ourselves there.'' (For his part, Rabbi Cohen says he is working with his successor, who also is a messianist.)

Lieberman watches his son for a moment and then looks back at me and sighs. ''It's a very difficult time,'' he says. ''I feel bad for my children. They won't have what I had. I worry for them.''


In a sense, the Lubavitch movement today is stronger than ever. Its 2002 budget was close to $1 billion, and it continues to open new schools, synagogues and Jewish outreach centers all over the world. But there is no question that the continuing messianism has the potential to cause significant attrition among the next generation. It is difficult enough to keep young people in a small enclave in the heart of Brooklyn insulated from the temptations of the secular world without also asking them to believe that a man who died nine years ago is about to return and redeem them.

As one 20-something ex-Lubavitcher wrote me in an e-mail message: ''Lubavitch is in trouble. They socialized their children to live according to premises that include that the rebbe is moshiach, which gave him authority over issues such as college, secular literature, etc. If people begin thinking the way I did/do and consider the possibility that the rebbe is human, they will no longer be able to explain why they shouldn't go to college et cetera. Uprooting these premises will jeopardize the entire value system.''

Thirty-five years old and skinny, with long kinky black hair and a Frank Zappa goatee, Baruch Thaler left the Lubavitch movement several years ago, but his mother, stepfather and five siblings are all still very much a part of it. Making one of his occasional trips to Crown Heights on a recent afternoon, Thaler takes me to meet his mother. ''This is what a messianic house looks like,'' he says, ushering me into the living room of his family's semiattached home. He is wearing a white shirt, untucked, black jeans and sneakers and a black knitted yarmulke that he has put on for the occasion.

On the bookshelf is a stack of Beis Moshiach magazines, the local messianic weekly, as well as the Igros Kodesh, a collection of the rebbe's letters that messianists use for guidance by flipping to a random page and reading the rebbe's words as an answer to something about which they need advice.

Thaler's mother, Rachel, 57, with blue eyes and braces on her teeth, comes down the stairs in traditional Orthodox garb -- a brown wig and ankle-length skirt -- and takes a seat next to her son on the couch. It is one of the peculiarities of the movement that for every Lieberman, an Old World Hasid, there is a New Age seeker like Rachel Thaler, who was a lapsed Jew living on a macrobiotic commune in upstate New York when she discovered Lubavitch in the early 1970's.

As with many fundamentalist faiths, whose most zealous practitioners tend to be converts, the most ardent messianists were not born into Hasidism but are rather ba'al teshuvah, or returnees to the faith, like Rachel. ''God recreates the world every second,'' she says, explaining her messianic faith to me. ''It's like a movie -- every frame can be totally different.''

If Rachel's messianic hopes were not deflated by the rebbe's death, her son's certainly were. A promising student in the local yeshivas, he had been on track to spread the rebbe's teachings as a Lubavitch emissary when he found himself among the throngs outside 770 on the day after the rebbe's death. Forcing his way to the front of the crowd, Thaler, who was 25 at the time, managed to grab the rebbe's coffin as it was being carried out of the building and into the car that would transport it to a graveyard in Queens. Because Jewish law requires that corpses be returned to the earth and most New York cemeteries mandate that dead bodies be fully enclosed, some Jewish coffins are made with a thin wood panel on the bottom that slides out when they are lowered into the ground. Reaching up to lift the coffin, Thaler found himself pushing directly up into that layer of plywood. As he shuffled toward the street, he could feel the shifting weight of the dead rebbe pressing into his bare hands. ''Later, people would insist that the casket was empty,'' he says. ''But this was total reality -- physical-touch confirmation.''

After the rebbe was buried, Thaler pulled away from the movement. He was, as the expression goes, ''frying out,'' a term adapted from the word ''frei,'' Yiddish for free. He spent the rest of his 20's and early 30's enjoying an overdue adolescence -- listening to reggae, having sex, traveling in Southeast Asia, discovering Burning Man. He now lives on the Upper West Side, where he's getting an undergraduate degree at Columbia while doing Yiddish translation on the side. While he's no longer observant, he retains a sentimental attachment to the movement. ''It isn't my interest to give up the positive elements of Lubavitch that I still love,'' Thaler says, ''the music, the literature, the congenial spirit of Hasidism. That can live on forever.''

This is not enough to satisfy Thaler's mother. ''He should be at peace with his relationship with the rebbe,'' she tells me as Thaler clutches at his yarmulke, which had slipped off, and places it precariously back on top of his head. ''I don't think he is now.''

Later I ask Thaler about his mother's messianism. ''Does believing in a man hanging on a cross make any more sense?'' he replies. ''Once you're in that mind-set, it's not a great wonder that you have people like my mother who seek the answers to life's crucial decisions based on opening a book.''

A little girl, Malkie Schwartz, who is now 22, lined up with the masses most Sundays to receive a blessing and a dollar bill from the rebbe, as was the custom in his later years. After the rebbe's death, she attended Lubavitch camps where she and her fellow campers sang songs beseeching him to return and redeem them.

For a while, the rebbe's physical absence made her spiritual yearning for him that much greater. ''I believed full-heartedly that he was moshiach,'' Schwartz says one morning in early August outside a Starbucks on Astor Place. ''I longed for him.''

Over time, though, Schwartz began to have doubts -- doubts that she had a hard time sharing with her fervently messianic parents. In the fall of 2000, at age 19, she sat down at the kitchen table with her mother and father, picked up a yellow highlighter and a blank piece of paper and drew a box and three stick figures. Two were inside the box and one was outside.

''See,'' she said, pointing to the drawing. ''You're inside the box. You believe the Torah is divine and the rebbe is moshiach. I'm outside the box.''

Her father cut her off before she could elaborate. ''But the Torah is divine,'' he said, ''and the rebbe is moshiach.''

Two weeks later, Schwartz, who had been the valedictorian of her Crown Heights yeshiva, moved out of her parents' house and into Manhattan. That the hardest part of leaving was not abandoning her family and friends but turning her back on the rebbe, underscores the power of messianism's hold on many Lubavitchers. ''Even when I left I knew the rebbe was always right -- I knew I was messing up,'' she says.

Now a senior at Hunter College, Schwartz is starting a nonprofit for members of ultrareligious communities who are trying to make inroads into the secular world. Since leaving Lubavitch, she has forged a strained peace with her parents, but at the same time her feelings of guilt toward the rebbe have curdled into resentment. She doesn't doubt his worthy intentions, but she does feel almost personally betrayed by his failure to anticipate the problems that the messianism he tacitly encouraged would one day cause. ''If you're going to have people waiting on line for hours to see you . . . he had to have seen how enthralled everyone was,'' she says. ''What he was thinking? Where did he think this would go?''

At the heart of the struggle between the anti-messianists and messianists, of course, is the question of what the rebbe wanted. Each side insists that they are the true interpreters of his teachings, and because the rebbe named neither a successor nor even a governing body to act in his absence, no one has the authority to resolve the dispute.

For anti-messianists, the biggest worry is the prospect that their beloved leader will be remembered as a false messiah. As the executors of the rebbe's will, they at least retain control over his personal notebooks and can edit and publish them with an eye toward de-emphasizing any statements that might encourage the messianists.

Yet the Bush-ka Schneerson Skull and Bones regime of satan continue to publish Schneerson's new laws of Talmud Bavli Universal Noahide garbage of their g-d, satan.

The biggest difficulty in trying to figure out what the rebbe really wanted is that he, too, was aware of his movement's image and thus sent different signals to those inside and outside the community. This was more than a mere P.R. gesture. The rebbe seemed to believe that bringing secular Jews back into the fold was a critical part of the process of redemption and was thus understandably wary of scaring people off with messianic zealotry.

Yet they all reject the ONLY Messiah the ONLY Christ, Jesus the Lord, and now the Talmudic Scofieldites of zion join them in euphorical mysticism

What does seem clear is that the rebbe was, for many years, eager to quell the tide of messianism when it began to rise. But as he grew older, he became more reluctant to do so. Among the messianists' abiding articles of faith are two videotapes of the rebbe in his later years. One shows him smiling as a crowd of Lubavitchers sing Yechi around him; in the other, he is accepting a petition signed by thousands that identifies him as the messiah.

In the late 80's and early 90's, the rebbe, no doubt increasingly aware of his approaching mortality as well as of his lack of progeny, began speaking more and more frequently about the messiah -- not explicitly nominating himself but nonetheless encouraging a messianic urgency among his followers and even occasionally hinting that the messianic era had already begun.

Max Kohanzad was a teenager in the Lubavitch yeshivas during those critical years. He and his classmates spent four hours a day poring over the rebbe's messianic discourses. In the aftermath of the rebbe's death, he was among the jubilant messianic Lubavitchers whose behavior so appalled Lieberman. ''I spent the entire day with the other yeshiva students singing Yechi and anticipating the actual redemption,'' says Kohanzad. ''What was understood was that this was the day utopia was going to begin.''

Unfazed when it didn't, Kohanzad and his fellow messianists soon started putting out their first underground publications, contending that the rebbe's death didn't diminish his legitimacy as messiah and pointing to Jewish sources that allow for a second coming. Kohanzad continued to dig deeper into the rebbe's messianic philosophy at various Lubavitch yeshivas. As he did, he felt a growing sense of discomfort with the rebbe's messianic rhetoric, which he thought clashed with traditional Jewish orthodoxy. Kohanzad, who left the movement in 2000 but is now completing a Jewish studies dissertation on the rebbe's messianic theology, has come to think that the messianists and anti-messianists are, to a degree, both correct. ''The rebbe himself was purposefully ambiguous with regard to his messianic statements, which leaves room for the two interpretations,'' he says.

In this context, it's possible to see the rebbe as a postmodern religious leader, one who intended for his followers to make their own decisions about his identity as the messiah. This would be in keeping with the tradition of Hasidism, which itself began as a populist effort to wrest Judaism from the grip of an elite group of Talmudic scholars. ''I think the rebbe wanted to dismantle his movement in a way,'' Max says. ''He realized that in order for people to be redeemed, they have to redeem themselves. The current mess is part of the rebbe's attempt to empower people.''

Or maybe there's another way of looking at it. Perhaps the rebbe was trying to walk the fine line between discouraging cultlike fanaticism among his followers and wanting to avoid shattering their hopes for imminent redemption.

DALLAS, Tx  Well-known Texas archaeologist and Bible scholar Vendyl Jones received an unusual honor while hosting a recent conference on religion, archaeology and the Seven Universal Laws.  Jones was presented with a unique Star of David, fashioned from the last steel beam pulled from the debris of the fallen twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Rabbi Benjamin Blech, a guest lecturer, made the presentation.  Blech, a best-selling author whose books have been called some of the best on Judaism, cited Professor Jones efforts on behalf of the Jewish people as one reason for the unique honor.  Blech told the conference crowd that the metal star was the inspiration of Dr. Rodney Leibowitz, an NDMS Officer and Forensic Dentist, who was one of the first on the scene at the World Trade Center disaster where he saved the lives of many firemen. Dr. Leibowitz co-founded First Responder, Inc., a New York City based professional consultancy that addresses domestic preparedness amongst other security concerns.  Some of the firefighters Dr. Leibowitz worked with at Ground Zero were involved in the extensive rescue and recovery operations. 

When the final beam of twisted steel stood before them, the firefighters decided to cut it into pieces as souvenirs.  They felt the chunks of steel would serve as reminders of an overwhelming tragedy but they would also symbolize our enormous national potential for renewal.  One piece was shaped into a cross and later presented to Pope John Paul in Rome. Rabbi Blech informed the weekend gathering, “When I told Dr. Leibowitz that I was invited to speak at Vendyl’s conference, I had to share with him Professor Jones remarkable search for the holy treasures of Solomon’s Temple which has been motivated by his genuine love for Israel and the Jewish people.  But I also told him that Vendyl’s work is not just confined to archaeology but to promoting an understanding between Jews and non-Jews through ethical teachings known as the Seven Laws of Noah.  He has been a major part of this movement known as BNai Noach (Children of Noah).  Dr. Leibowitz felt very strongly that there was some connection between his Company, First Responder Inc., and Vendyl’s efforts they both want to repair the world.  He asked me to give you this, Vendyl.”

A visibly shaken Jones clutched the rough-edged metal star as Rabbi Blech told the crowd, “This means they did not destroy the essence of civili zation.  This last piece of metal from the last steel beam of the twin towers survives as a key to the world we are rebuilding and a world that will eventually come to an awareness and recognition of God.”

The crowd at the annual BNai Noach Conference also heard presentations from author Dr. James D. Tabor (Department of Religious Studies, University of North Carolina at Charlotte), Rabbi Avraham Sutton from Israel, Dr. Zvi Aviner from Lafayette, Louisiana and author/film maker Jim Long from Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Jones is considered as a foremost authority in Judaism as well as the geography, history and archaeology of the Land of Israel. In addition to his studies in Judaica at Hebrew University, he studied in the Lubervitchur Chabad Yeshiva and in Beit Kabballah, the two most Orthodox Rabbinic schools in Israel. He pioneered the concept of Covenant Plurality which has of recent been accepted in three major denominations. "Covenant Plurality" says Jones, "is very simple. You simply interpret the Bible in the plain, ordinary, simple and normal meaning of the words. Don't add unstated meaning or `spiritualize' the passages. Define the words based on the root of the original tongue.
