On March 17, Purim Eve, the Cross Hall of the "East" wing of the Whitehouse, George W. Bush the appointment president of the United States, by the Chabad Lubavitch cult leader rebbe Schneerson, Proclaimed "Purim Saddam" which gave license for the Israeli's to begin absolute "Purim Palestine" and the Lisence of their Homelandt Sekurity to begin "Perpetual Purim Goyim Saint of Jesus Christ. It also signified the vision of their sacrifice to their g-d of an animal, the command for the Wall and the Street went forth.

The ritual murder at Purim is committed against adult Gentiles. Fresh strong men and women are preferred. The Purim festival is celebrated annually by the Jews in February or March. It is in commemoratiion of the 75,000 anti-semitic Persians murdered by the Jews. This massacre occurred under the Persian King Ahasueros (Xerxes). He had a minister (Haman) who recognized the Jewish danger and wanted to expel the Jews. The King's Jewish whore Esther persuaded him instead to hang Haman and his ten sons. After that came the murder of the 75,000 anti-semitic persians under the leadership of the Jew Mordecai. The following day the Jews celebrated with joyous festivities which are observed as the `Feast of Purim' even today.

At this festival the Jews usually become completely drunk. This occurs particularly at meetings of Orthodox Jews. During these orgies, plays are staged in which the murder of Haman is re-enacted by the Jews. An effigy of `Haman' is put on the stage and is hanged while the Jews curse and cast spells (directed against the `Goyim'). The Talmud commands the Jews to cry out aloud: "May Haman and the Gentiles be cursed. May Mordecai and all the Jews be blessed." (Talmud: Orach cajjim 690, 16). Finally the Jews throw stones at the effigy and stab it with knives.

In Palestine and in some areas of Russia the Jews hold their processions in public. At the head of the procession the effigy of Haman is carried, and is stoned, stabbed with knives, and beaten with sticks. In 1764, the Jews of Monastyr (Russia) celbrated Purim with a live `Haman.' The Jewish inn-keeper Moscho from Michalowetz had brought the drunken farmer Adamko to the festival in his wagon. The Jews took off his clothes, celebrated their festival, dressed him as `Haman' and gave him a savage beating. They also burned him on the back. Adamko arrived home totally drunk, complained of severe pains and died the next day. The Jew Moscho poisoned him so that he would never tell about the Purim Feast. The case was brought to trial, and the Jew Moscho was sentenced to death. (The documents from this trial were kept by the authorities at Kammetz until the Bolshevik revolution. They were then destroyed by the Jews. - Ed.)

Even today the Jews are celebrating similar Purim festivals throughout the world.

Outside after the performance some people reminisced that more Gentiles had been killed by the Jews in Susa during the original Purim [75,000]. They, therefore, reasoned that this was the right time to kill a comparable number of Gentiles in the holy land.

The annals of Jewish communities in many parts of the world include peril and cruel laws which threatened the lives of Jewish individuals and sometimes endangered the survival of the whole community. In a few fortunate cases, the danger was suddenly removed, or the dreaded law was inexplicably abrogated. Then, that community would commemorate each anniversary of the happy change by observing a "Second Purim," a festival which mimicked the original Purim, which marks the deliverance of the Jews of Persia from the evil machinations of Haman. Historians have listed some 90 "second Purim" anniversaries observed by various Jewish families and communities, beginning with the early Middle Ages and ending with the so-called "Hitler-Purim" proclaimed by the Jews of Casablanca in 1943.

Hitler and Purim

Adolph Hitler knew about this holiday and its significance in Jewish history. In 1941, Hitler banned the Jewish community in Poland from the observance of Purim. They were forbidden to read the Scroll of Esther and the synagogues were closed on that day (Goodman 1980: 374).

The Celebration of Purim

On Purim, a Jewish person goes to the synagogue for the reading of the Megillah, the scroll of Esther (Babylonian Talmud, Megillah 1a). The first year I studied in Israel, I had a class in Biblical Hebrew. In the spring semester we were translating the book of Esther. One of our class assignments was to visit a synagogue for the reading of the Megillah at Purim. What an experience that was! When the cantor came to the name Mordecai, the protagonist in the story, the people shouted, "Blessed be Mordecai." When the name Haman, the antagonist, was read, everybody stomped their feet on the floor, made noise with their noisemakers called groggers, and shouted, "Cursed be Haman."

Homeland Security was set up by jews to protect only jews and to deliver they who are "Aginst Them's"

JERUSALEM/MADRID (Reuters) - Syria's ambassador to Spain said on Wednesday Damascus would respond militarily against Israel if the Jewish state carried out new attacks on Syrian territory.

A senior Israeli security source swiftly dismissed the threat, saying Israel did not want to escalate tensions and believed Syria did not want to start a war. The source said the envoy's statement was mainly intended to impress the Arab world.

But the comments increased tensions simmering since Israel carried out an air strike on Sunday on what it said was a training camp for Palestinian militants near Damascus, one day after a Palestinian suicide bombing killed 19 people in Israel.

Syria says the target was a civilian site and has said it has the right to defend itself.

"If Israel attacks Syria one, two and three times, of course the people of Syria and the government of Syria and the army will react to defend ourselves," Syrian Ambassador Mohsen Bilal told Reuters in Madrid.

Asked if that meant responding militarily, he said: "By all means. If Israel continues to attack us and continues its aggression of course we shall react to the attacks in spite of the fact that we are fighting for peace and wish to reopen the (1991) Madrid (peace) conference."

But the senior Israeli security source said: "This sort of statement is intended mainly for the Arab world, to give the impression Syria is steadfast in the fight against Israel.

"Israel does not seek an escalation with Syria, and indeed has taken precautions to prevent that. We will act in self-defense if necessary, but not if Damascus receives our message that it must stop supporting terror," the source said.

The new tensions have sparked discussion of whether three years of Israeli-Palestinian conflict could ignite violence in other parts of the Middle East, but most political and military analysts say this is unlikely.

Israel's air raid was its deepest strike into Syria since the 1973 Middle East war. It followed a suicide bombing by a female suicide bomber from the Islamic Jihad group who killed 19 people in a restaurant in the northern city of Haifa.

Israeli jets roared over Lebanon on Wednesday, without launching any strike and only breaking the sound barrier, two days after an Israeli soldier and a Lebanese boy were killed in border flare-ups, a Reuters correspondent said.

Responding to Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's threats on Tuesday that Israel would hit its enemies anywhere, Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said it was unlikely Israel would launch an attack on the Islamic Republic.

Israel repeatedly accuses Iran of arming, training and funding Palestinian militant groups but Iran insists its support is purely moral.

"They (the Israelis) are so involved with problems inside their country that I do not think they want to create another problem outside it. We are also fully prepared to defend our country," Khatami told reporters after a weekly cabinet meeting.

Sharon has been buoyed by support from President Bush. Washington has accused Syria of being a state sponsor of terrorism.

"The decisions that he (Sharon) makes to defend her people are valid decisions. We would be doing the same thing," Bush said on Tuesday. He added that it was "important for the prime minister to avoid escalation."

Faced with what the army called numerous alerts of pending suicide attacks, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz gave the military the go-ahead on Tuesday to order a special call-up of reservists, should it deem one necessary, security sources said.

Some ministers want Israel to carry out a threat to "remove" Palestinian President Yasser Arafat but Sharon has until now opposed this, saying it could be counter-productive.

The latest violence has dealt further blows to peace hopes, although Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie, who was sworn in with a small emergency cabinet on Tuesday, renewed calls for progress on the U.S.-backed peace "road map."

Qurie made a fresh appeal for a cease-fire with Israel in an interview published by an Israeli newspaper on Wednesday, saying he was ready to start talks immediately. Israeli Labour Minister Zevulun Orlev quickly ruled out a truce.

Israel says it will not press on with the road map until the Palestinians rein in Islamic militants. Qurie says he will try to persuade the militants to end violence but rules out using force which could risk a civil war.

According to several dictionaries, Jerusalem means "House of Shalem," which comes from the worship of the planet Venus as an evening star.

God's Message to the Nations - The Feast of Purim

As we write this article America and its allies are preparing to go to war against Iraq, the territory and heartland of ancient Babylon. There is a great deal of Biblical significance to the events taking place today because the “Desert Storm” Gulf War ended exactly on the Jewish holiday of Purim in 1991. President George W. Bush’s public declaration of the present Gulf War with Iraq was made on the Feast of Purim 2003 – exactly 12 years to the day on the Hebrew calendar from the day the “Desert Storm” Gulf War ended.

What Biblical significance does the Jewish Feast of Purim have to the two Gulf Wars? The story of Purim is found in the book of Esther

(Astarte, Ishatar, Easter, Venus) of the oral tradition of Talmud Bavli, Mishnah Torah, the books of satan, the "Robber" they chose, when they rejected the "Chooser" the Redeemer, Salvation Jesus Christ

in the Bible. The story centers on a plot by Haman to completely annihilate the Jews living in the kingdom of the Meade’s and Persians. Interestingly, the capital city of the Meade’s and Persians was Babylon, located in present day Iraq.

King Ahasuerus was king over Babylon and he appointed Haman over all the princes in the land. Haman induced the king to sign a decree ordering all the Jews in the kingdom to be exterminated by offering to pay ten thousand talents of silver into the king’s treasury. The decree read as follows:

“Then the king’s scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and it was written just as Haman commanded to the king’s satraps, to the governors who were over each province and to the princes of each people, each province according to its script, each people according to its language, being written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king’s signet ring. Letters were sent by couriers to all the king’s provinces to destroy, to kill and to annihilate all the Jews, both young and old, women and children, in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to seize their possessions as plunder.” Esther 3:12-13

Scripture reveals that the same day the decree was signed, the thirteenth day of the first month, would have been the day before Passover, and that same evening, years later, was the day Jesus Christ was taken before Caiaphas the high priest and asked, “I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God”? (Matthew 26:63)

The following day, the fourteenth day of the first month, is the Jewish Feast of Passover that commemorates their deliverance by the God of Israel from slavery in Egypt. Years later, it was also the same day, the fourteenth day of the first month, Nissan, that Jesus Christ was nailed to a cross on Calvary. In Babylon, at the time of Esther, it was the day that riders went forth throughout the kingdom of the Medes and Persians announcing the decree to kill and annihilate all the Jews in the kingdom on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month.

Haman induced the king to sign and issue the decree because according to the law of the Medes and Persians once a decree was written and signed by a king it could never be revoked! Haman believed that he had sealed the fate of the Jews living in the kingdom. In his heart, nothing could save them from annihilation.

Interestingly, the word Purim means "lots", which is the modern equivalent of dice. The singular form of the word Purim is “Pur”, so Purim literally means “dice”. How did Haman determine the best day for the Persian Holocaust? He cast lots to determine the day.

“In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, Pur, that is the lot, was cast before Haman from day to day and from month to month, until the twelfth month, that is the month Adar.” Esther 3:7

So Haman literally cast lots to decide the day of destruction and annihilation for the Jews. Just as lots were cast to destroy the Jews, as Jesus hung on the cross the Roman soldiers cast lots for his clothing.

“They divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” Psalm 22:18

In the last days, the Lord is going to gather all the nations and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There He will enter into judgment with them on behalf of His and His inheritance, Israel. One of the reasons God says He will judge the nations is because they have cast lots for My people!

The seed according to the Promise, are them in faith. This is the seed of Abraham of the One seed, Christ Jesus.

“They have also cast lots for My people, traded a boy for a harlot and sold a girl for wine that they may drink.” Joel 3:3

The king did not know that his queen, Esther, was a Jew. Mordecai, her uncle urged her to go before the king and implore him to change his decree and save their people.

Esther wavered, saying to Mordecai, “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that for any man or woman who comes to the king to the inner court who is not summoned, he has but one law, that he be put to death, unless the king holds out to him the golden scepter so that he may live. And I have not been summoned to come to the king for these thirty days.” Esther 4:11

Fear gripped Queen Esther because she knew she could perish if she went before the king on her own volition and he did not hold out his golden scepter to her. Mordecai was unmoved, because He knew His God.

Mordecai said to her, “Do not imagine that you in the king’s palace can escape any more than all the Jews. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place and you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?” Esther 4:13-14

Mordecai was a man who knew His God. Though the decree had been signed and gone forth, a decree that could not be repealed, he knew that His God would somehow send deliverance to His people. The question Mordecai posed to Esther was, “who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this”?

With God, there are no short cuts to maturity. There is no possibility for us to avoid real life situations. Our nation has arrived at such a time as this. Life always brings with it conflict, and real battles. However, God is always with those He chooses and with those who trust in Him.

Real life battles are God’s way of developing our character and increasing our faith and trust in Him. Most of the western nations did not want to fight this present Gulf War battle. They were unwilling. Yet, the Lord has allowed this conflict to take place and nation of America and England along with a handful of other nations including Israel are at the forefront of the conflict.

Remember, Jesus prayed to God for His disciples not that God would “take them out of the world,” but that He would keep them from the evil one.” John 17:15 God never kept Abraham, Moses, David or Hezekiah to name a few, from real battles perpetrated by evil kings, but He kept him in the midst of the battle. Real battles with real enemies create wonderful opportunities for God to develop our faith and trust in Him.

More than anything else, real battles reveal what we believe about God. Conflict tests our character as well as our faith. Conflict does not make character - it reveals it. Conflict does not make faith - it reveals it.

Esther had to step forward in faith, believing that she was born “for a time such as this”. Esther exercised her faith and went before the king, and as a result the Lord acted on behalf of His people. Esther was a woman who put feet to her faith.

When the Queen revealed to the king that she was a Jew, and that Haman had plotted her destruction, the king turned on Haman and hanged him on the very gallows that he had built to hang Mordecai.

Then, Esther pleaded with the king to nullify the decree. Knowing he could not nullify the decree the king gave Mordecai and Esther the power and authority to allow the Jews to defend themselves against their enemies.

So King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew, “Behold, I have given the house of Haman to Esther, and him they have hanged on the gallows because he had stretched out his hands against the Jews. Now you write to the Jews as you see fit, in the king’s name, and seal it with the king’s signet ring; for a decree which is written in the name of the king and sealed with the king’s signet ring may not be revoked.” Esther 8:7-8

The Lord overturned the decree and the plan of Haman. The day that had been chosen to be a Holocaust to the Jews became a day when Israel plundered their mortal enemies. Purim became a day of rejoicing in the God of Israel who preserves His chosen people and His holy nation Israel. The Bible states that Purim is to be a perpetual holiday for the Jewish people. (Esther 9)

The Lord raised up Queen Esther to thwart Haman’s plan to annihilate His people, through which would come the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

Ishmaelites - Ishmael is mentioned in Genesis 16:12, described as a wild donkey of a man and his hand would be against everyone. Genesis 28:18 reveals where he lived. He settled east of Egypt toward Assyria, which is the land of Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and Iran.

Hagrites - Hagar was the mother of Ishmael. The Hagrites lived in Jordan between the southern end of the Sea of Galilee and the river Jabbok, east of the Jordan River.

Philistia The 5 cities were Gaza, (the main one), Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath. Their location is current day Gaza, along with the southern coast of modern Israel. See a map of Israel for the location of these cities.

Tyre Tyre is located on the coast of Lebanon, just north of the current border of Israel.

Assyria Assyria was an empire that included current day northern Iraq, Syria, the eastern part of Turkey, Jordan, northern Israel, and a small part of Egypt.

Jewish legal experts have created a new institute that will educate jurists and

others about 2,000 years of Jewish law and promote the application of the

teachings to contemporary legal disputes and other modern-day issues.

The launch of the Washington-based National Institute for Judaic Law was marked

Tuesday night with a kosher dinner at the Supreme Court attended by 200 people,

including three Supreme Court Justices - Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Stephen Breyer,

and Antonin Scalia.

US President George W. Bush sent greetings and applauded the institute for

promoting an "understanding of Judaism's rich tradition of legal thought."

"As we face new challenges and welcome new opportunities, our society must

continue to promote good character and strong values. Through the study and

teaching of Jewish law and philosophy you are contributing to a growing

culture of service, citizenship, and responsibility in America," Bush wrote.

Scalia, in a letter to the institute's founder, Noson Gurary, wrote that

"Jewish law is certainly one of the oldest and most highly developed systems"

and explained why the comparative study of legal traditions was beneficial.

"The idea is to make Jewish law more accessible to everyone," said Washington

lawyer Alyza Lewin. Both Lewin and her father Nathan Lewin are helping

establish the institute.

Last year, Alyza Lewin filed a brief to the Supreme Court based on the Talmud's

take on capital punishment when the court was readying to ear a case on the

constitutionality of the electric chair.

"Legal scholars often like to know what other legal traditions have said about

certain issues," said Alyza Lewin.

Filing that kind of opinion is only part of the institute's mandate.

It will also promote the teaching of Jewish law, develop curricula on Jewish

law that can be integrated into traditional law school courses, and serve as a

resource for anyone wanting to know what the vast Jewish legal tradition has

to say on various issues.

The institute's first project, already underway, explores how Jewish law can be

applied to modern-day issues surrounding corporate ethics, an idea spurred by

the recent corporate scandals involving Enron and Worldcom.

Gurary, who teaches at the State University of New York at Buffalo, thought up

the idea of the institute about nine months ago.

"By demonstrating the philosophy of Jewish law and its moral values, we can

bring a little beacon of light in this world," Gurary said.

"I think this is what we need now, in this day and age."

Hanukkah predates Christmas. It is similar to the Christian holiday in the reaffirmation of community and family values; gifts are exchanged, candles are lit in the candelabrum or "Hanukkah lamp" (cheth-nun-vau-caph- yodh-he) and it is a time of rejoicing. However, Jews who observe it don't observe it in relation to Christmas. For the practicing Jew, Hanukkah is not wrapped around Christmas. Jewish children cannot sit on Santa's lap at the mall, and during Christmas they may be easily over- whelmed by the signs of Christmas, to such a degree that they can feel like outsiders.

The holiday commemorates an event in 165 B.C. when Jews in Syria fought, to keep from being assimilated into the Hellenic Society of Grecian rulers, who had banned Jewish worship. The Hanukkah festival not only commemorates this victory but is a celebration of the obtaining of religious freedom. To many Jews it symbolizes the Jewish position as a minority in a mainly Christian nation and has a special meaning for them in keeping their identity. While they believe and fully support American diversity, they recognize that they have common goals as a people.

The 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev marks the beginning of the eight-day observance. It commemorates the military and spiritual victory of Judas Maccabaeus and his army over the King of Syria, who attempted to crush the Jewish faith in one God. Jewish armies defeated the forces of Grecian ruler Antiochus Epiphanes and took possession of the temple in Jerusalem. The Jews wanted to cleanse the temple, but had only one day's supply of oil for lighting. The Talmud says the oil burned for eight days and Hanukkah celebrates that miracle.

The name of Jacob's fifth son (Gen. xxx. 6), whose mother was Bilhah, Rachel's handmaiden (ib. xxx. 3, xxxv. 25). He was therefore a full brother of Naphtali (xxx. 8). Dan's name occurs also in Gen. xlix. 16 et seq.; Judges xviii. 29; I Chron. ii. 2, and in all the passages where his sons are mentioned (Gen. xlvi. 23 et seq.).

The Tribe.

"Dan" designates one of the twelve tribes of Israel, both in poetic (Deut. xxxiii. 22; Judges v. 17) and in prose passages (Num. i. 12; ii. 25, 31; Deut. xxvii. 13; Judges xiii. 25, xviii. 12; Ezek. xlviii. 1, 32 et seq.; I Chron. xxvii. 22; II Chron. ii. 13); but it generally occurs in combinations such as "the sons of Dan" (Num. i. 38, ii. 25, vii. 66, x. 25, xxvi. 42; Josh. xix. 47), "the generations of Dan" (Num. xxvi. 42), "the tribe of the sons of Dan" (Num. xxxiv. 22; Josh. xix. 40, 48), or, simply, "the tribe of Dan" (Ex. xxxi. 6, xxxv. 34, xxxviii. 23; Lev. xxiv. 11; Num. i. 39, xiii. 12; Josh. xxi. 5, 23). The following are detached details from the history of the tribe given in the Old Testament. The artist Aholiab or Oholiab, who took part in the construction of the Tabernacle (Ex. xxxi. 6, xxxv. 34, xxxviii. 23), was a member of this tribe, as was also the mother of a man who blasphemed the name of Yhwh (Lev. xxiv. 11). At the time of Moses, Dan is represented as one of the larger tribes of the children of Israel, and as numbering 62,700 men of twenty years of age and upward (Num. i. 39, ii. 26). Somewhat later, when the tribe of Benjamin, for instance, is reported as having only 35,400 (Num. i. 37) or 45,600 men (ib. xxvi. 41), the number in the tribe of Dan is given as 64,400 (ib. xxvi. 43). Its men able to bear arms were among the three tribes (Dan, Asher, and Naphtali) whose army in the wilderness of Sinai covered the northern flank (Num. ii. 25-31, x. 25-27). Ammiel, one of the twelve spies (ib. xiii. 12), belonged to Dan; and its prince was Bukki (ib. xxxiv. 22). On entering Canaan the representatives of Dan, together with those of Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, took their position on Ebal, the mount of the curse (Deut. xxvii. 13). In Moses' blessing Dan is characterized as "a lion's whelp: he shall leap from Bashan" (ib. xxxiii. 22). The latter clause, however, does not fit Dan, since that tribe did not live in the well-known plain of Bashan east of the Jordan.

The Territory.

The land assigned to the tribe of Dan was in western Canaan, its several cities and boundaries being enumerated in Josh. xix. 40-46. Noteworthy among the cities are Zorah, Eshtaol, Thimnathah or Timnah, Ajalon (near which was fought the famous battle described in Josh x. 12), and Ekron, which is found in the cuneiform inscriptions as "Amḳarruna." On the north the territory of Dan ended opposite Joppa, the modern Jaffa. This territory, not very extensive originally, was soon diminished by its dangerous neighbors, the Philistines. It is not surprising, therefore, that the Danites had great difficulty in conquering the country that had been assigned to them (Josh. xix. 47; Judges xviii. 1). Accordingly, they sent a deputation to find a district suitable for the reception of a part of the tribe. This was found in the vicinity of the city of Laish (Judges xviii. 7-27; see below, 3). Another indication that the tribe of Dan was harassed is found in the sentence "Why did Dan remain in ships?" (Judges v. 17). This probably had reference to the fact that members of the tribe of Dan had enlisted on the ships of the Phenicians (see Budde, "Kurzer Handcommentar," 1897, and Nowack, "Handcommentar," 1900).

The distress of Dan increased when, toward the end of the period of the Israelitish judges, the Philistines, receiving reenforcements from their former home (Guthe, "Gesch. des Volkes Israel," 1899, p. 65), endeavored to invade the middle territories of Canaan (Josephus, "Ant." v. 8, § 1). Then help arose for Dan in the person of the hero Samson (Judges xiii. 2-xvi. 31), whose work was brilliantly continued by Samuel (I Sam. vii. 11), and then by David and other kings. This explains why the tribe of Dan is mentioned in the accounts of David (I Chron. xxvii. 22) and Solomon (II Chron. ii. 13), and in later times (Ezek. xlviii. 1, 2, 32).

The later designation for the Canaanite city Laish (Judges xviii. 7, 14, 27, 29) or Leshem (Josh. xix. 47), the latter name being probably derived from "Lesham." The city lay in a deep valley near Beth-rehob (Judges xviii. 28), on the northern frontier of Palestine, at the place where "men come to Hamath" (Num. xiii. 21). According to Josephus ("Ant." v. 3, § 1), it was not far from the sources of the lesser Jordan, and, according to the "Onomastica Sacra" (s.v. "Dan"), three or four Roman miles from Paneas. In the Book of Enoch (xiii. 7) it is said that "Dan lay south of the western side of Mt. Hermon." Originally inhabited by Canaanites, it was captured by a part of the tribe of Dan, whose territory in southwestern Palestine was invaded by the Philistines (Josh. xix. 47; Judges xviii. 1 et seq.), and who named it after their tribal ancestor (Josh. xix. 47). The mention of the name of Dan as early as the time of Abraham and Moses (Gen. xiv.14; Deut. xxxiv. 1) is therefore anticipated by the later chronicler (compare "Beth-el" in Gen. xii. 8 and xxviii. 19). Consequently there is no reason to assume, from Gen. xiv. 14 and Deut. xxxiv. 1, the existence of another city of Dan.

The place seems to be identical with Dan-jaan (II Sam. xxiv. 6), which was situated east of the Lake of Gennesaret toward Sidon; and as this was the route on which Laish-Dan lay (Judges xviii. 7, 29), it is probable that "Dan-jaan" is a corruption of "Dan-jaar" (Dan in the wood), and that this was merely an occasional designation of the city of Dan.

The place is often mentioned in the phrases "from Dan even to Beer-sheba" (Judges xx. 1; I Sam. iii. 20; II Sam. iii. 10; xvii. 11; xxiv. 2, 15; I Kings iv. 25; Amos viii. 14) and "from Beer-sheba even to Dan" (I Chron. xxi. 2; II Chron. xxx. 5); while in Jer. iv. 15 and viii. 16 it is mentioned as a northern frontier town of Palestine.

Dan is also referred to in connection with the ritual; for, according to Judges xviii. 31, a graven image stood there up to the time of the destruction of the sanctuary at Shiloh, which sanctuary is mentioned for the last time in I Sam. iv. 12. Jeroboam I. set up at Dan one of the two golden calves which he intended as symbols for Yhwh (I Kings xii. 29). Many persons of the northern tribes of Israel, therefore, made pilgrimages to Dan (Amos viii. 14; II Kings x.29); but the city soon fell into the hands of Israel's northern enemies (I Kings xv. 20; II Chron. xvi. 4).

A hill near the valley in which lay the ancient city of Dan is to-day called "Tall al-Ḳaḍi"—i.e., "Hill of the Judge"—the name being, perhaps, a reminiscence of the name Dan = "judge."

Dan plays a peculiar rôle in rabbinical tradition. Owing to the fact that his name, as the name of a tribe, is connected with the blasphemer (Lev. xxiv. 11), and with the idolatry of northern Israel (Judges xviii. 30; I Kings xii. 29; Amos viii. 14), while Samson, the judge of the tribe of Dan, proved faithless to his nazirate (Judges xiii. 2), Dan came to be regarded as the black sheep of the house of Jacob. His hatred of Joseph, because he brought to his father evil reports against the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, induced him to plot against Joseph's life, and he advised the brothers to deceive their father by telling that they had found the coat of Joseph dipped in blood (Test. Patr., Zebulon, 4; Dan, 1; Gad, 1). Dan and Gad were in league with the crown prince of Egypt against Joseph and Asenath ( see Asenath, Prayer of ).

As early as the days of Moses the tribe of Dan worshiped idols, wherefore the pillar of cloud failed to protect it, and consequently Amalek smote Dan, who was the "hindmost" and "feeble" because "he feared not God" (Targ. Yer. to Deut. xxv. 18; Pesiḳ. iii. 27b; Pesiḳ. R. xii.; Tan., Ki Teẓe). Being "the rearward of all the camps" (Num. x. 25), Dan fell a victim to "the fire that devoured the uttermost part of the camp because of the idol which provoked the anger of the Lord" (Targ. Yer. to Num. xi. 1, Hebr.). It was also Dan's idolatry which induced Balaam to order altar and sacrifices for the defeat of Israel (Targ. Yer. to Num. xxii. 41, xxiii. 1). Dan's idolatry restrained Abraham in his march against the Babylonian kings (Gen. xiv. 15; Gen. R. xliii.) and appalled Moses in his vision of the future (Targ. Yer. to Deut. xxxiv. 1; Sifre, Debarim, 357). The children of Dan taught their sons the idolatrous Amorite practises contained in the books hidden under Mount Abarim (Gaster, "Chronicles of Jerahmeel," 1899, p. 167).

Jacob's blessing of Dan, in which he is compared to a serpent (Gen. xlix. 16-18), is referred to Samson (Gen. R. xcviii.), and the serpent is said to have been made the emblem of the tribe on its standard (Num. R. ii.).

Dan, Type of Antichrist.

But Dan became the very type of evil-doing. He was placed to the north (Num. ii. 25), this being the region of darkness and evil (Jer. i. 14), because of his idolatry which wrapped the world in darkness (Num. R. ii.). Still further goes a tradition which identifies the serpent and the lion (Gen. xlix. 17 and Deut. xxxiii. 22) with Belial (see the literature in Bousset's "Antichrist," 1895, pp. 87, 113). Irenæus ("Adversus Hæreses," v. 302), Hippolytus ("De Christo et Antichristo," pp. 14, 15), and other Church fathers have a tradition, which can not but be of Jewish origin, that the Antichrist comes from the tribe of Dan, and base it upon Jer. viii. 16: "The snorting of his [the enemy's] horses was heard from Dan"—a verse referred also in Gen. R. xliii. to Dan's idolatry. Irenæus remarks that Dan is, in view of this tradition, not in the Apocalypse (Rev. vii. 5-7) among the 144,000 saved ones of the twelve tribes. Nor is the omission of Dan in I Chron. iv. et seq. unintentional. Bousset, who has a special chapter devoted to the Dan Antichrist legend (l.c. pp. 112-115), believes that the connection of Dan with Belial in Test. Patr., Dan, 5 points to the same tradition. This seems to find corroboration in Targ. Yer. to Deut. xxxiv. 3, where the war against Ahriman ()and Gog or Magog in the vision of Moses seems to refer to Dan, 1 (compare Sifre, l.c. to ; .

—Critical View:

Kuenen ("Theologisch Tijdschrift," v. 291) and others after him, such as Cheyne ("Encyc. Bibl." s.v.), have argued that "Dan" is the title of a deity. In the etymology adduced in the explanatory remarks attributed to Rachel (Gen. xxx. 6) nothing is said about the character of the child. The judgment referred to is by God, and is passed upon Rachel. The reference to the name "Daniel" and to the cuneiform name of a king, "Ashur-dan," in support of the critical view has not been regarded by conservative scholars as sufficient to prove the contention in issue. Still, the analogy with other names, both tribal ( Gad ) and personal, is strongly in favor of the views advanced by Kuenen and his successors. "Daniel," in all probability, means "Dan is El" (compare "Eliyahu") and not "God is my judge"; and "Ashur-dan" is also a combination of two names of deities.

The personal existence of a son of Jacob bearing the name "Dan" has also been denied by modern scholars. This is in accord with the general doubt cast on the patriarchal biographies and genealogies. It is contended that no clan or tribe ever sprang from one ancestor. While among the tribes one of the name of Dan may have existed, the designation is that of an eponym, assumed after the tribe had come to reflect upon its own origin and its relations to other tribes (Cornill, "History of Israel," p. 32; Stade, "Gesch. des Volkes Israel," i. 124, 146; Guthe, "Gesch. des Volkes Israel," pp. 5 et seq.; Holzinger, "Kurzer Handcommentar," on Gen. xxx. 24; Gunkel, "Handcommentar," on Gen. xxix. 35; Cheyne, in "Encyc. Bibl." cols. 992 et seq.).

The assumption that Dan was the son of Rachel's handmaid, Bilhah, whose other son was Naphtali, signifies, according to the modern view of the ideas underlying such genealogies, that the tribe of Dan recognized a closer geographical or historical connection with that of Naphtali, in common with which it was regarded, or regarded itself, as somehow in a position subordinate to the tribes that traced their descent directly through Rachel from Jacob. The universal applicability of this principle has been doubted by König ("Bibelkritisches," 1902). In the case of Dan, tradition furnishes only scant material by which to test the theory. Yet, as the genealogies and biographies of other tribal eponyms appear to justify the general principle, there is no reason, from the point of view of the critical school, to question its applicability to Dan

“G-d gave me justice,” proclaimed Rachel upon the birth of Jacob’s first son by her handmaiden, Bilhah, and named him Dan, Hebrew for “judgment.” “Dan shall be the judge of his people,” said Jacob in blessing him before his passing. If you meet a person, says the Talmud, who is forever insisting on justice, this is a sure sign that he is from the tribe of Dan.

Now as our Lord Jesus Christ, who is also God, was prophesied of under the figure of a lion, on account of his royalty and glory, in the same way have the scriptures also beforehand spoken of Antichrist as a lion, on account of his tyranny and violence. For the deceiver seeks to liken himself in all things to the Son of God. Christ is a lion, so Antichrist is also a lion. Christ is a king, so Antichrist is also a king. The Savior was manifested as a lamb, so he too in like manner will appear as a lamb without; within he is a wolf. The Savior came into the world in the circumcision [i.e., the Jewish race], and he will come in the same manner. . . . The Savior raised up and showed his holy flesh like a temple, and he will raise a temple of stone in Jerusalem" (The Antichrist 6 [A.D. 200]). "[W]e find it written regarding Antichrist . . . ‘Dan is a lion’s whelp, and he shall leap from Bashan’ [Deut. 33:22]. But that no one may err by supposing that this is said of the Savior, let him attend carefully to the matter. Dan, he says, is a lion’s whelp. And in naming the tribe of Dan, he declared clearly the tribe from which Antichrist is destined to spring. For as Christ springs from the tribe of Judah, so Antichrist is to spring from the tribe of Dan. And that the case stands thus, we see also from the words of Jacob: ‘Let Dan be a serpent, lying upon the ground, biting the horse’s heel’ [Gen. 49:17]. What then is meant by the serpent but Antichrist, that deceiver who is mentioned in Genesis [Gen. 3:1], who deceived Eve and supplanted Adam? . . . [I]t is in reality out of the tribe of Dan, then, that tyrant and king, that dread judge, that son of the devil, is destined to spring and arise" (ibid., 14).

"ABOVE ALL, MOREVER,HE WILL LOVE THE NATION OF THE JEWS. And with all these [Jews] he will work signs and terrible wonders, false wonders and not true, in order to deceive his impious equals. . . . And after that he will build the temple in Jerusalem and will restore it again speedily and give it over to the Jews" (Discourse on the End of the World 23-25 [A.D. 217]).

THE JEWSIH MOSHIACH: "moshiach" does not mean "savior." The notion of an innocent, divine or semi-divine being who will sacrifice himself to save us from the consequences of our own sins is a purely Christian concept. The moshiach will be a GREAT POLITICAL LEADER descended from King David (Jeremiah 23:5). The moshiach is often referred to as "moshiach ben David" (moshiach, son of David). He will be well-versed in Jewish law, and observant of its commandments. (Isaiah 11:2-5) He will be a charismatic leader, inspiring others to follow his example. He will be a great military leader, who will win battles for Israel. He will be a great judge, who makes righteous decisions (Jeremiah 33:15). But above all, he will be a human being, not a god, demi-god or other supernatural being. The moshiach will bring about the political and spiritual redemption of the Jewish people by bringing us back to Israel and restoring Jerusalem (Isaiah 11:11-12; Jeremiah 23:8; 30:3; Hosea 3:4-5). He will establish a government in Israel that will be the center of all world government, both for Jews and gentiles (Isaiah 2:2-4; 11:10; 42:1). He will rebuild the Temple and re-establish its worship (Jeremiah 33:18). He will restore the religious court system of Israel and establish Jewish law as the law of the land (Jeremiah 33:15).

Problem is the flesh "Sayer" Tribe of Dan is stricken from the reveleation of Jesus Christ to John his servant, in his vision of the last days. Dan is extremely jealous.......

A community where everyone will have his/her place in as well as the designated jobs so that everything will stay turning round in unity and not squarely in disunity.
As such it became that the tribe of Judah will stand at the helm of the Nation where out the later king as well as Moshiach will emerge. And through the tribe of Yoseph the Heavenly Blessings of Yaakov will befall those who within Yisrael as without will merit it. In fact Yoseph will become the stone the cornerstone for keeping an eye to the enlightenment of the whole community. His tribe will in a way of speaking become the keeper of the belief in G-d until the tribe of Levi has proven itself to have learnt the depth of the blessing Yaakov gave Levi. This we will see becoming realized with the birth of Moshe whereas his brother Aharon out of the tribe Levi became the very first High-priest of the Temple.
At that moment the blessing credentials of Yaakov that went to Yoseph would become the credentials of all of Yisrael due to the fact that all will have learnt including Rueben and Simeon. Together in unity with the tribe of Dan as Judge, the tribe of Zebulon as the merchandisers of the Sea, the tribe of Gad as the military defender of the Nation, the tribe of Issachar as the shepherd and protector of the sheep staying within the boundaries the sheep-folds of enlightenment, the tribe of Naphtali who will become the moral supporter of the people not to give up on Hashem, the tribe of Asher becoming the merchandisers of the land and the tribe of Benyamin becoming the helper of every individual of the Nation who need help they all together build and are building the strong foundation needed to last an everlasting time that won't change then only we adjusting ourselves to the True Learning's coming out of the Eternal world of enlightenment for receiving the blessing merits to our next life to come.
