The scene in the imposing Caucus Room of the House of Representatives. Present are a hundred and fifty senators and congressmen, in addition to numerous men of importance from around the United States. Mingling with the august legislators of the realm is a number of young Rabbis, quite obviously not members of Congress. Scattered around the hall are many groups, comprising both legislators and Rabbis, chatting amiably together.
The date is April 17, 1978.

The occasion, a grand reception celebrating the proclamation of April 18, 1978, as "Education Day, U.S.A."

The Rabbis? Directors of Lubavitcher activities at over sixty centers and Chabad Houses, throughout the length and breadth of this land.

Their connection with the occasion? They had initiated the idea. The "need for the Nation to set aside on the calendar a day devoted to the importance of education to the lives of its citizens and to the general wellbeing of the Nation" (as the proclamation reads) was first recognized by Lubavitch, whose world leader, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, had called for a "Year of Education" two years previously and for its renewal a year later. The significance of April 18th was that it was the day of the Rebbe's birthday (11th of Nissan).

The distinguished guests present were expressing their admiration and affection for the Lubavitcher movement and its illustrious leader. They had already passed the legislation, and it was about to be signed into law by President Carter while the reception was taking place. Now they had taken time off from their busy schedules to celebrate the occasion in the House Caucus Room. Walter F. Mondale, Vice-President of the United States, chaired the event. He was introduced to each of the Lubavitcher leaders individually right at the start of the program.

At the reception, one did not have to look far to see the spontaneous reaction of the assembled towards the event that brought them together. The caliber of the congressmen and senators present and the remarks of the leading members who spoke, clearly demonstrated the recognition and affection they felt for "the movement blessed with such a leader," as Senator Kennedy expressed it. Similar sentiments were expressed by Robert J. Lipshutz, Counsel to the President, who was present as personal representative of President Carter and gave his remarks in the President's name.

Congressman Clarence D. Long of Maryland, Chairman, Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Affairs, said in his speech that, in his opinion, the achievements of Lubavitch make them worthy of being leaders in focusing attention upon the importance of education throughout the nation.

Senator Jacob Javits of New York spoke with warm words about the great accomplishments of Lubavitch in his own state and around the world. Other distinguished legislators who spoke were Congressman Robert C. Nix, Chairman of the House Committee of Post Office and Civil Service, Senator Clifford Case of New Jersey and Congressman Benjamin Rosenthal, who was chief sponsor of the legislation.

Vice-President Mondale, in a very moving speech, praised the Rebbe's role as leader of world Jewry and his work for education, wishing him many more fruitful years at the helm of the Chabad movement. "I am delighted," he said, "to join in the two joyous occasions which bring us together today, the Lubavitcher Rebbe's 76th birthday and the resolution proclaimed officially by the Congress proclaiming Education Day, U.S.A. It is fitting that Education Day be proclaimed on the birthday of Rabbi Schneerson, who is a great Talmudic scholar dedicated to the education of Jewish people throughout the world."

He conveyed personal apologies from President Carter that he was unable to participate personally due to pressure of public work. Senator Kennedy chaired temporarily when the Vice-president was for a while called away on urgent business in connection with the Panama Canal issue. In the name of all Lubavitcher representatives present, Rabbi Zalman Posner of Nashville, Tennessee, greeted the assembled in thought provoking words. Rabbi Avraham Shemtov, Director of Lubavitch activities in Philadelphia, ended the inspiring program with words of gratitude to all participants and sponsors who had made possible "Education Day, U.S.A."

On this auspicious occasion, in the month of Nissan on the eve of the Festival of Pesach, the Festival of Liberation, it is particularly pertinent to begin with an expression of gratitude to the Al-mighty (* NOT JESUS CHRIST the Alpha and the Omega, but a strange gawd) for His infinite kindness to each and all of us gathered here, and elsewhere in many places in various parts of world.

Indeed, recognition and appreciation of any kindness or benevolence, whether it is received directly from G-d or through the agency of a fellow human being — is one of the basic teachings of the Torah.(*Mishnah Talmud Bavli)  It is also the underlying basis of many of the Divine precepts of the Torah, beginning with the first of the Ten Commandments ("I am the L-rd thy G-d, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage"), and including such an elementary obligation as "Honor thy father and thy mother."

In keeping with the principle of recognition and appreciation, I wish to express my appreciation and gratitude to all the well wishers who came to participate in this gathering and in similar gatherings in various parts of the United States, especially in the Nation's Capital, as well as overseas: no less also to all those who were kind enough to send me messages of greeting and blessing on the occasion of my birthday.

I gratefully acknowledge all these felicitations as expressions of affinity with the movement which 1 am privileged to head, and as tributes to it in recognition of its services to the lands and peoples hosting its educational, cultural and philanthropic institutions.

Mindful of the exhortation, (Extortion) "Seek the peace of the city (and land) whither I have caused you to be exiled, and pray unto the L-rd for it; for in the peace thereof shall you have peace" (Jer. 29:7), we are particularly grateful for the freedom and conducive atmosphere prevailing in these great and blessed United States where my revered predecessor, my father-in-law of saintly memory, transplanted the headquarters of our movement in 1940, under whose leadership, in the last decade of his dedicated life, the movement took root and flourished, and has borne fruits and fruits of fruits, "like a spring flowing with ever-growing vigor."

"EDUCATION DAY, U.S.A."

Most deserving of our very profound appreciation is one of the most meaningful actions by the U.S. Congress who, in a joint resolution, carried by a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives and by unanimous vote in the Senate, authorized and requested the President of the United States to proclaim this day as "Education Day, USA," which the President graciously signed into law.

While the timing of this action was conceived as a tribute to our movement, which sees in education the cornerstone not only of Jewish life, but of humanity at large, and has been dedicated to this vital cause ever since its inception more than two hundred years ago—it is a fitting and timely tribute to the cause of education in general, focusing attention on what is surely one of the Nation's top priorities.

It is fitting indeed that the U.S.A. has shown, through a forceful example to the world, that it places education among its foremost priorities. It is also to be hoped that "Education Day" will become a permanent institution, especially since, by reason of the pervasive nature of education, it would lend further significance to other "Days" such as Father's Day and Mother's Day and similar institutions which have become part of American life.

The proclamation of "Education Day, USA" is of extraordinary significance in impressing upon citizens the importance of education, both in their own lives as well as, and even more so, for the young generation in the formative years—particularly in the present day and age.

IN RETROSPECT AND PROSPECT

We have now concluded the "Year of Education" proclaimed last year on this day. This calls for review and introspection. In all humility we can say that with G-d's help it has been a very successful year for education, with the addition of numerous educational facilities on all levels in the U.S.A.( for Jewry)  and in many parts of the world; a substantially increased enrollment; and upgrading the quality of education. However, needless to say, as long as there is still one child that does not receive an adequate education, we can neither be satisfied nor slacken our efforts. On the contrary, the successful "Education Campaign" should spur us to even greater efforts in the ensuing year. It is human nature that ambition grows with achievement. If this is so in regard to material riches, how much more so in regard to real and eternal values. Moreover, since this trait of the human nature to strive for ever greater spiritual advancement has been given to every human being by the Creator, as a commendable factor, it is self understood that the Creator provides, at the same time, the capability and opportunities to translate it into tangible results, for "G-d requests of people only according to their powers (that He has given them)" (Midrash Bamidbar 13:3). Thus, in the Final analysis, it is mainly a matter of one's own will and determination. And let no one be satisfied with just a little greater effort for the cause of education, but—in keeping fully with human nature as cited above, double and redouble one's efforts for so vital a cause.

Education, in general, should not be limited to the acquisition of knowledge and preparation for a career, or, in common parlance, "to make a better living." And we must think in terms of a '"better living" not only for the individual, but also for the society as a whole. The educational system must, therefore, pay more attention, indeed the main attention, to the building of character, with emphasis on moral and ethical values. (Need one be reminded of what happened in our lifetime in a country that ranked among the foremost in science, technology, philosophy, etc.?)

Education must put greater emphasis on the promotion of fundamental human rights and obligations of justice and morality, which are the basis of any human society, if it is to be truly human and not turn into a jungle.

"FOREIGN AID" TO EDUCATION

The United States of America has a long-standing policy of foreign aid to developing countries, through direct grants and through U.N. agencies. Economic aid to foreign countries includes also cultural aid for the promotion and support of cultural programs, etc.

It is generally recognized, at any rate among the free and democratic nations, that each nation is a member of the Family of nations, (Collective)  and all must live together in "the world" which is like one organism. When any part of an organism ails, it affects the whole body; strengthening any part of the body strengthens the whole.

The record of this Nation's foreign aid is unexcelled in the annals of history, (3 Trillion dollars to the "Master Race" gods, the chosen who choose the Robber") which is as it should be for a Nation so generously blessed by the Al-mighty. (Why his Illumined Pic is on the Dollar, Satan the god of mammon) One would wish, however, for more affirmative action in the area of cultural, particularly educational, programs.

Economic aid given to a developing country is meant to be used most efficiently and productively. While the conditions attached to such aid must necessarily be limited and circumspect, there are certain conditions which are considered prerequisites. To cite a recent example. President Carter has taken a courageous stand on Human Rights, dismissing the notion that it is an "internal matter," and he has made it also a condition of Foreign Aid. It is to the President's credit that he has not only raised this issue, but has succeeded in arousing the world's "interest" in behalf of this cause. "Unofficially " however, there is a great deal more that the U.S. government can do to make foreign aid even more productive.

This Nation, with a healthy intuition, indeed, conviction, recognized that its economic system must not be based on crass materialism. Nothing expresses this idea more eloquently and forcefully than the motto on the American Dollar—"In God We Trust."

In giving out billions of dollars in foreign aid, many discreet ways can be found to have the beneficiaries take a look and ponder on this inscription, with a view to encouraging them to recognize the importance of Trust in G-d, of appropriate education, with particular emphasis on moral values (Naugerhyde Laws)  and genera, humanitarian principles, as mentioned above.

Carrying this train of thought further brings us also to the question of military aid.

Ideally, education should lead to a world state where "Nation shall not lift up sword against Nation, (Olam Ha Ba, New World Order, where only the Master Race will have a Military) neither shall they train for war" (Isaiah 2:4).(Again the use of Scripture, the Prophets they slew, to deceive Judeo Churchizionity)  Until such an ideal state is reached, there will be a need—in the Nation's own interest—to provide friendly, democratic nations (Mossad, high fiving at WTC)  with military aid for self defense, but not to provide military aid to nations that will use it to start war It would surely be in the best interests of those countries themselves, as well as of the United States and the world at large, if, instead, goodwill and benevolence towards them were expressed in terms of economic and cultural aid, to help them raise a new generation free from hatred and violence and bent on channeling their youthful energies and ambitions towards all that is good, good for them and for their countries, and the common good of humanity both materially and spiritually.

In light of all that has been said above, it is most gratifying indeed that President Carter, Vice-President Mondale, and the eminent members of the United States Congress. G-d bless each and ail of them, have thoughtfully and graciously initiated and associated themselves with the Proclamation of "Education Day, U.S.A." It augurs well for the vital cause of education in the United States. It will, we hope and pray, also have a beneficial impact on education in all countries which look up to the United States of America for leadership and inspiration in all vital matters that transcend national boundaries, and conduce to a better human society and a better world.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said foreign criticism of Israel's use of force against Palestinians in a three-year-old uprising is motivated by a new form of anti-Semitism.

 

"Around the world, time and again, Israel is criticized for exercising its right of self-defense by using excessive force," Sharon, speaking in English, told visiting Jewish activists from Canada late Wednesday.

 

Those who reject Israel's "right to use force to defend itself" also effectively deny its "birthright to exist" in its ancestral homeland, he added.

 

"Regrettably, we see this phenomenon among many nations in the world community and I would say that this is a new form of anti-Semitism," Sharon said.

 

Israel says it uses force in Palestinian territories to defend itself against suicide bombers who have killed hundreds of Israelis since the uprising began in September 2000.

 

Sharon's remarks followed a recent European Union poll that found that a majority of EU citizens see Israel as the greatest threat to world peace. The survey caused an uproar in Israel.

I remember - I will always remember my first visit to Lubavitch. It happened some thirty years ago. Though a hasid of Wizhinitz, I had heard of Habad and its renowned leader. A foreign correspondent for Israel's evening-paper "Yedioth Ahronoth", I had thought of doing a story about the way Lubavitcher hasidim celebrate the liberation of the first-or the "Alter'-Rebbe, reb Shneur Zalman of Ladi from Czarist prison. When I left in the early morning hours, I still belonged to Wizhnitz, but I was already caught by something or someone one finds only in Lubavitch.

I remember: in a "shul" that seems both huge and intimate, thousands and thousands of hasidim, young and old, from all over the world, are dancing vertically, as if not moving from their place, yet forcing their rhythm onto me entire universe.

Their eyes closed, they sing as only hasidim can. Ten times, fifty times, they repeat the same words, the same tune. and the song bursts their chests and lights a thousand flames in their eyes before rising higher and higher- up to the seventh heaven, if not higher, to the "Heikhal hanegina," source and sanctuary of all songs.

The center is the Rebbe. The hasid in me looks at him with wonder. There is something melancholy and profoundly moving about his personality. Disturbing and reassuring at the same time. He feels what everyone here feels, he helps all attain the unattainable. In his presence, one feels more Jewish, more authentically Jewish. Seen by him, one comes in closer contact with one's own inner Jewish center.

I am unable to take my eyes off him. His gaze encompasses everyone and everything. I have rarely witnessed such control of and concern over such a large assembly. Thousands of eyes follow his most imperceptible movements. When he talks, everybody listens breathlessly, absorbing every word, every sigh. When he sings, the whole world sings with him and us.

I remember: hours long I stood there, at 770 Eastern Parkway, as in a dream, looking at the Rebbe who was looking at his followers. At times he smiled and night vanished from their lives. There were moments when he seemed serious and somber. And, between song and song, his fervent listeners trembled between fear and hope.

Suddenly I saw myself as a child again. Spending a Shabbat at the court of the Wizhnitzer Rebbe. There, too, the sounds became strings and played ancient melodies.

Yet here in Lubavitch it is different. The world is different. Countless invisible cemeteries separated the past from the present. In Lubavitch I think even about Wizhinitz in a different manner. What the Rebbe of Lubaivitch is doing, what he is accomplishing here can be felt beyond Lubavitch.

This I came to understand much later. As I began traveling around the country, I discovered the Rebbe's emissaries in the most forsaken places. Were it not for them and their devotion, were it not for the mission entrusted onto them by the Rebbe, in me forty years of his leadership, who knows how many Jewish souls would have been lost to our people.

It is part of the Rebbe's greatness that he knows whom to send where and when. Not all their accomplishments have been made public. Some must remain secret. When they will be revealed -- soon, I hope -- they will surely increase the already existing admiration for the Rebbe's vision in the field of education.
Thus the Jewish people owe the Rebbe a great debt of recognition and gratitude.

I do, too. I have learned much from Lubavitch in Lubavitch. The late-night conversations I had with the Rebbe, in the 60's, remain with me.

Had I not participated in the "Hag Hageulah" of Chabad some thirty years ago, I wonder whether I would be who I am now.

I first met Rabbi Shlomo Cunin in 1986 as a return favor for a friend who helped me arrange a project I was working on. From then on, the Rabbi and his family became my family.

The Rabbi invited me to Chabad's drug rehab center in Pico-Robertson. The first picture that I saw when I walked in, was many weight lifters in action, they were real characters.

What most struck me, was in the back area; I see this guy sitting at a table, he had a big beard, with a hat on. He looked like a rabbi. He was in his shirtsleeves, and he was hand-wrestling these guys. They were all lined up and, one after the other, he's putting them down. Then someone told him I was there, so he put on his coat, grabbed me and gave me a hug. I said, 'this is my kind of a guy.'
I am always so happy and honored to be on the Chabad-L'chaim to Life Telethon. I had no idea that coming onto the telethon fifteen years ago would make me famous. Let me tell you of one incident of the many.

I was shopping at the neighborhood supermarket and I happened to notice an elderly couple peeking as they past me. Then they started whispering to one another, and I realized what was going on. After a few minutes the elderly man got some courage to approach me, and he pointed at me and said, "I know you! I know that face!" I said yes you do, I am one of the dancers on the Chabad telethon. He said "that's it"…

And this is one of the many incidents that occur over and over again.

In the mid-1980s, I had a period of spiritual seeking, I made some mistakes in my early life, and had to recover from them. I was brought up Catholic and had no intention of converting to Judaism. Of all the religions I studied, I have a special fondness for Jewish learning and values. Judaism is an amazing fountain of information. I have tremendous regard for it.

One of the big things about the Jewish religion is that its fruit is the deed. I think that is portrayed perfectly by Chabad, and that's why I am with them.

I never met the Rebbe personally, who was a great and extraordinary leader. But the Rebbe sent his thanks for all the help to me, through Rabbi Cunin, he requested that I should speak out on the telethon in support of the Seven Noahide Commandments, and I did.

The Seven Noahide Commandments appeal to my own sense of what I feel is a higher purpose, which is to try to get everyone to an understanding of what they're asked to do, what life's responsibilities are. These very simple Seven Laws of Noah, are good basics.

Well, he never accepted the Only IAm before converting, so what is new?

We are given the idea by our culture that if you have enough money, enough cars, enough women, everything's taken care of. It's perfectly all right to be as selfish as you want. There could not be a more poisonous message.

Four years ago, while filming the NBC mini-series "Noah" in Melbourne, Australia, I called the then twenty-year-old Tzemach Cunin, one of Rabbi Cunin's children, who was then studying in a local yeshiva, and asked him for his help in researching the part. Without the information I gained from studying with Cunin, it would have been a lot worse off biblically, then it turned out to be.

So now you no why the made for TV movie was a totally blasphemeous unscriptural show.

One of the remarkable aspects of Judaism, and I'm not Jewish, is the scholarship passed down from generation to generation. They immerse themselves in this rich, wonderful text, of which the story of Noah is a part. Great minds like Maimonides, the Maharal, the wonderful Chassidic masters and great contemporary minds like the Rebbe. The story of Noah has been examined and contemplated for thousands of years. As a result, we've come up with some wonderful insights from the original Hebrew words that give us a depth to the story. I felt I was standing on good legs when I did the piece.

It may not be accurate biblically, in terms of the story, but I think in the end it was pretty good. There are good little lessons in it. It was a battle to try and make it a decent portrait.

The Fire Last Time

Wesley Clark and Waco

On February 28, 1993 the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms launched its disastrous and lethal raid on the Branch Dividian compound outside Waco, Texas. Even before the raid, members of the US Armed Forces, many of them in civilian dress, were around the compound.

In the wake of the Feb 28 debacle Texas governor Anne Richards asked to consult with knowledgeable military personnel. Her request went to the US Army base at Fort Hood, where the commanding officer of the US Army's III corps referred her to the Cavalry Division of the III Corps, whose commander at the time was Wesley Clark. Subsequent congressional enquiry records that Richards met with Wesley Clark's number two, the assistant division commander, who advised her on military equipment that might be used in a subsequent raid. Clark's man, at Richard's request, also met with the head of the Texas National Guard.

Two senior Army officers subsequently travelled to a crucial April 14 meeting in Washington, D.C. with Attorney General Janet Reno and Justice Department and FBI officials in which the impending April 19 attack on the compound was reviewed. The 186-page "Investigation into the Activities of Federal Law Enforcement Agencies Towards the Branch Davidians", prepared by the Committee on Government Reform and Oversight and lodged in 1996 (CR 104 749) does not name these two officers and at deadline CounterPunch has so far been unable to unearth them. One of these officers had reconnoitered the Branch Davidian compound a day earlier, on April 13. During the Justice Dept. meeting one of the officers told Reno that if the military had been called in to end a barricade situation as part of a military operation in a foreign country, it would focus its efforts on "taking out" the leader of the operation.

Ultimately tanks from Fort Hood were used in the final catastrophic assault on the Branch Davidian compound on April 19. Certainly the Waco onslaught bears characteristics typical of Gen. Wesley Clark: the eagerness to take out the leader (viz., the Clark-ordered bombing of Milosevich's private residence); the utter disregard for the lives of innocent men, women and children; the arrogant miscalculations about the effects of force; disregard for law, whether of the Posse Comitatus Act governing military actions within the United States or, abroad, the purview of the Nuremberg laws on war crimes and attacks on civilians.

Waco Update:
The Delta Force Was There

Amid Nato military supremo Wesley Clark's onslaught on the civilians of Serbia the question arose: did Clark hone his civilian-killing skills at Waco, where the FBI oversaw the largest single spasm of slaughter of civilians by law enforcement in US history, when nearly a hundred Branch Davidians died amid an assault by tanks, flame-throwers and snipers.

The tanks were from Fort Hood, where Wesley Clark was, in early 1993, commander of the Cavalry Division of the US Army's III Corps. In our last issue we cited a congressional report commissioned in the aftermath of Waco which described how Texas governor Anne Richards had consulted with Clark's number two at Fort Hood. Then, on April 14, there was a summit at the Justice Department in Washington, where Attorney General Janet Reno, top Justice Department and FBI officials and two unnamed senior Army officers reviewed the final assault plan scheduled for April 19.

The two Army officers at the Justice Department that day were Colonel Gerald Boykin, and his superior, Gen. Peter J. Schoomaker, the head of Special Forces at Fort Bragg. Though Clark (who had served with Schoomaker) was not directly involved in the onslaught on the Branch Davidians, the role of the US Army in that affair throws into harsh relief the way prohibitions against the use of the US military for civilian law enforcement can be swiftly by-passed.

Boykin and Schoomacher were present because the Army's Fort Bragg-based Combat Applications Group-popularly known as the Delta Force-had been enlisted as part of the assault team on the Branch Davidian Compound. It appears that President Clinton had signed a waiver of the Posse Comitatus Act, with the precedent being Ronald Reagan's revocation of the Act in 1987, allowing the Delta Force to be involved in suppressing the Atlanta prison riot.

The role of the Delta Force, the identity of the two Army officers, the revocation of Posse Comitatus all form part of the disclosures of a forthcoming documentary film, Waco: A New Revelation, put together by part of the team that produced an earlier, excellent film, Waco: Rules of Engagement. Following our questions about Wesley Clark's possible involvement at Waco, producer/researcher Mike McNulty called us with some details of his new documentary-directed by Jason van Fleet and due to be released in July.

After energetic use of Freedom of Information Act enquiries, plus research in three repositories in Texas holding evidence from the Waco inferno, plus other extensive investigations, McNulty and his team have put together an explosive file:

. 28 video tapes from the repositories show that in the final onslaught on the Waco compound were members of the US military in special assault gear and with name tags obscured. As noted above, Clinton's revocation of the Posse Comitatus Act made this presence legal. McNulty isolates Vince Foster as the White House point man for the Waco operation.

McNulty cites Foster's widow as saying that the depression that prompted the White House lawyer's death was fueled by horror at the carnage at Waco for which the White House had given the ultimate green light. Foster was writing a Waco report when he died. McNulty says that some documents about Foster and Waco were among those removed from his office after his death, later to surface in a White house store room sheltering archives of the First Lady.

The film, McNulty says, discloses how the federal assault team placed explosives on top of a compound bunker whither the feds believed the Branch Davidian leaders might flee. Material evidence collected by McNulty shows that the FBI/Delta assault force bombarded the compound with pyrophoric--i.e. fire-causing--projectiles.

Erosion of Posse Comitatus Act prohibitions on the involvement of the US military in law enforcement here is particularly sinister. The congressional report on Waco showed that some Army officers were extremely disturbed at requests for military assistance by the FBI, and there were some acrimonious exchanges at the time. The drug war, needless to say, has been a prime solvent in this process of erosion. One factor is the malign cross-fertilization occurring when these so-called "elite units"--the Army's Combat Application Group, the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, the Navy's SEALs--all train together, along with SWAT teams from police forces across the country. Thousands of law enforcement officers have now cut their teeth on the homicidal commando techniques most flagrantly displayed by the killers assembled in the British SAS, members of which were also present at the Waco siege. The Rambo mindset now saturates law enforcement, and even the rangers in Fish and Game Departments now pack heat. Both CounterPunch editors have had the experience of being asked to down their fly rods and produce ID, by young Fish and Game rangers with semi-automatics on their hips.

Who sent Clark?

Perhaps you've heard a quote claimed from an interview of Janet Reno on the television program 60 Minutes in 1995. The "quotation" goes like this:

Al Qaida commander 'anticipates' 100,000 Americans dead in attack

Al-Qal'a (The Fortress) an Islamist Internet forum, posted the first of a two-part interview with a person who introduced himself as Abu Salma Al-Hijazi, one of the Al Qaida commanders closest to Osama bin Laden.(1) The interview was conducted in Iraq, south of Faluja. The article notes that Al-Hijazi was surrounded by five masked men carrying missiles as well as personal weapons. The following are excerpts from the interview:

In regard to rumors about a large-scale attack against the U.S. during the month of Ramadan, Al-Hijazi said that "a huge and very courageous strike" will take place and that the number of infidels expected to be killed in this attack, according to primary estimates, exceeds 100,000. He added that he "anticipates, but will not swear, that the attack will happen during Ramadan."

He further stated that the attack will be carried out in a way that will "amaze the world and turn Al Qaida into [an organization that] horrifies the world until the law of Allah is implemented, actually implemented, and not just in words, on His land... You wait and see that the balance of power between Al Qaida and its rivals will change, all of a sudden, Allah willing."

Regarding Al Qaida detainees, Al-Hijazi said: "We follow their situation closely... the collaborating governments will pay the price for capturing these heroes who want to revive the glory of their nation and shake off the dust of humiliation and disgrace."

Al-Hijazi added that the "collaborating and treacherous" governments should know that Al Qaida has a long reach and its members enjoy popularity that will not end just because apostate governments detain hundreds of Al Qaida's members. "As soon as the governments detain one of our people, ten like him join us... this is no secret."

Al-Hijazi said that Al Qaida instructed its members not to confront the governments of Islamic countries and clarified that Americans are the main target of the organization, wherever they may be, in order to cause their disintegration and collapse, even if it takes a long time. "We are patient," he added, "our patience will only end with the collapse of America and its agents."

Al-Hijazi also said: "There is no doubt that the demise of America and its collapse will lead to the collapse of these fragile regimes that depend on it... We will not stop until we establish the Islamic Caliphate and until Allah's law is implemented in His land."

When asked about the recent bombing in Riyadh, Al-Hijazi referred to Saudi media reports — which claimed that in the attack Muslim women and children were killed — as "merely media deceit." He added: "This place was under surveillance for many months. Following a thorough investigation, it became perfectly clear to us that the people living there were at least 300 Americans and a large group of Lebanese Christians who had tortured Muslims there, in Lebanon, during the civil war. After consultation, we decided it was appropriate to attack this place and destroy it, including the people who lived there, because it housed Americans and a large majority of Christians holding Lebanese citizenship.
