Tuesday's flare went off the scale; researchers say it was "well above X20". A precise description is difficult because some monitoring satellites were briefly blinded the scale of the event.
Even so, experts say the Tuesday event must have been the most powerful ever recorded, surpassing the X20 flares of 2 April 2001 and 16 August 1989.
The major flares have come from sunspot region 486, now officially the most active solar region in recorded solar observational history.
Because 486 is close to the Sun's western limb, the blast was not directed straight towards the Earth.

Nevertheless, our planet's magnetic sheath may still be hit by clouds of charged particles in the next 24 or 48 hours and could give rise to geomagnetic storms.
Skywatchers have been told to be on alert for spectacular aurorae in darkened skies.
These dancing polar lights are generated when fast-moving particles (electrons and protons) ejected from the Sun get trapped in the magnetic field around the Earth, and collide with the gases in the upper atmosphere.
Some orbiting satellites could be in the firing line, too. The mass of electrons contained in these surges can damage onboard microchips. Operations may need to be temporarily suspended to protect sensitive equipment.
And high energy radiation hitting our atmosphere could also interrupt short-wave radio transmissions and cause errors in navigation systems.
Dr Paal Brekke, deputy project scientist for the Solar Heliospheric Observatory (Soho) Sun-monitoring satellite, told BBC News Online: "I think the last week will go into the history books as one of the most dramatic solar activity periods we have seen in modern times."

The Bible gave a warning about a dangerous, false prophet who would arise to
test our faith in G-d. In Deuteronomy 13, G-d describes this false prophet as a
member of the Jewish people (v. 2, 7) who would tell true prophecies and would
have the power of miracles. G-d Himself would give this false prophet the power
to perform miracles and reveal prophecy, but the false prophet would try to
seduce the people away from G-d's Law and towards strange gods unknown to
Judaism. The purpose would be to test whether we are truly committed to living
under the Law, or whether we will be dazzled and fall for the temptation to join
a false path to salvation (v. 3-6, 7-8, 11). In this Biblical passage, G-d
repeatedly commands the Jews to kill this false prophet, lest the evil spread
and destroy many souls.
To be accepted by the people, the false prophet would sometimes pretend to be a
righteous Jew who fulfills the Law, but at key moments he would turn against
certain details of the Law in order to make the breach (v. 6, 7). This is the
reason that verse 1 commands us not to add or subtract any details from the Law,
and verse 5 warns us to remain steadfast with all the traditions of the Law.
In Deuteronomy 17, this false prophet is also described as someone who would
rebel against the authority of the judges of the Jewish people, and who should
be put to death for his rebelliousness (v. 8-13, esp. v. 12). Who are the
judges? The highest court in Israel was the Sanhedrin, which was established by
Moses (Exodus 18:13-26; Numbers 11:16-29), and which lasted more than 15
centuries. The members of the Sanhedrin were the rabbis known as
"Pharisees" (Pirushim, "those with the explanation"). G-d
gave permanent authority to these judges to interpret the Law and G-d's Word,
and it is a commandment to follow their decisions without turning even slightly
to the right or the left (Deut. 17:11). But the false prophet would challenge
the authority of the Sanhedrin, thus revealing himself to be an evil man.
In the book of the prophet Daniel, this false prophet is described as a king
(the eleventh horn on a terrible beast) who would wage war against the Jews (the
"holy ones"; see Deut. 14:2 on this term) and would change the Law —
including the calendar and the holidays (Daniel 7:8, 20-25). Elsewhere, this
false prophet is described as a king who would disregard the G-d of his fathers,
exalting himself as a god and giving honor to this new god-head (Daniel
11:36-39).
The man known today as "Jesus" fulfilled all these prophecies. He
became a "king" (over the Christian church) who changed the original
Law, doing away with the Hebrew calendar and the Biblical holidays (Rosh
Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkos — the Festival of Tabernacles, Passover, etc.).
He disregarded the one, infinite G-d of the Hebrew Bible in favor of a new
"trinity" that included himself. And he repeatedly broke the Law by
committing terrible sins, while openly challenging the G-d-given authority of
the rabbis of the Sanhedrin.
Naturally, Jesus did sometimes pretend to respect the Law, but whenever he
thought he could get away with it, he turned right around and broke that same
Law. In Matthew 5:17-19, he declared that he came to fulfill the Law, and in
Matthew 23:1-3 he defended the authority of the rabbis. But the rest of the
time, he rebelled against the Law — thus showing that his occasional words of
piety were meant only to hide his evil agenda. The following sins of Jesus are
recorded in the "New Testament":
1) Jesus repudiated the laws of kosher food (Mark 7:18-19). [Compare this to the
prophet Daniel's strict adherence to kashrus, in Daniel chapter 1.]
2) He repudiated the laws of honoring one's parents, and called on his followers
to hate their parents; he also dishonored his own mother (Matthew 10:34-36;
Matthew 12:46-50; Luke 14:26).
3) He violated the Sabbath by picking grain, and incited his disciples to do the
same (Matthew 12:1-8; Mark 2:23-26).
4) He again violated the Sabbath by healing a man's arm, which was not a matter
of saving a life, and he openly defied the rabbis in his total repudiation of
the Sabbath (Matthew 12:9-13; Mark 3:1-5). [Compare this to G-d's view of
violating the Sabbath, in Numbers 15:32-36, Nehemiah 10:30-32, and dozens of
other places throughout the Bible.]
5) Jesus brazenly defied and disobeyed the rabbis of the Sanhedrin, repudiating
their authority (This is recorded in many places throughout the New Testament,
but look especially at Matthew 23:13-39 and John 8:44-45).
The Talmud (Babylonian edition) records other sins of "Jesus the
Nazarene":
1) He and his disciples practiced sorcery and black magic, led Jews astray into
idolatry, and were sponsored by foreign, gentile powers for the purpose of
subverting Jewish worship (Sanhedrin 43a).
2) He was sexually immoral, worshipped statues of stone (a brick is mentioned),
was cut off from the Jewish people for his wickedness, and refused to repent
(Sanhedrin 107b; Sotah 47a).
3) He learned witchcraft in Egypt and, to perform miracles, used procedures that
involved cutting his flesh — which is also explicitly banned in the Bible
(Shabbos 104b).
The false, rebellious message of Jesus has been thoroughly rejected by the vast
majority of the Jewish people, as G-d commanded. Unfortunately, however, this
same message has brought a terrible darkness upon the world; today, over 1.5
billion gentiles believe in Jesus. These lost souls mistakenly think they have
found salvation in Jesus; tragically, they are in for a rude awakening. Truth
and eternal life are found directly from G-d, through performing His Law. Any
"mediator" only separates man from G-d:
1) "G-d is not a man, who can lie, nor the son of man, who relents.… He
has not beheld iniquity in Jacob, nor has He seen perverseness in Israel"
(Numbers 23:19).
2) Speaking prophetically of the Christian church, Moses declared, "For
their 'rock' is not like our Rock.… Where is their god, in whom they
trusted?" (Deut. 32:31, 37).
3) "'See now that I,
only I, am He, and there is no god with Me. I kill, and I bring to life; I
wound, and I heal, and there is none who can rescue from My Hand.'… Sing songs
of joy, gentiles, with His people, for He will avenge the blood of His servants,
and will take vengeance on His enemies, and will forgive His land and His
people" (Deut. 32:39, 43).
4) "I, only I am Hashem (the L-rd), and besides Me there is no savior"
(Isaiah 43:11).
5) "I am the First and I am the Last; besides me there is no god.… Is
there a god besides Me? There is no rock; I do not know any" (Isaiah 44:6).
6) "Israel is saved in Hashem with an eternal salvation.… Assemble
yourselves and come, come near together, you gentiles who have escaped [the
judgment]. (They have no knowledge, those who carry wooden sculptures and who
pray to a god that does not save.) Announce and bring near, even take counsel
together: Who declared this from ancient times, and announced it from then? Is
it not I, Hashem? And there are no other gods beside Me, nor any righteous and
saving god other than Me. Turn to Me and be saved, all ends of the earth, for I
am G-d and there is none else. By Myself I swore, a righteous word went out of
my mouth and it will not be withdrawn, that to Me every knee will bow and every
tongue will swear" (Isaiah 45:17, 20-23).
What is the true key to salvation? Those who return to the Law (the Seven
Commandments for the Children of Noah, according to the eternal covenant made
with Noah in Genesis 9) and who assist the Jewish people (Isaiah 60, 61, 66)
will be saved and will participate in the miracles and revelations, including
worshipping in the Third Temple, under the kingship of the Messiah. As described
in many places, including Jeremiah 16:19-21 and Zechariah 8:20-23, all the old
gentile religions of the world will disappear, and their followers will turn to
the Jews for spiritual leadership. Until then, Christians are spiritually
blinded, and cannot yet understand G-d's wisdom in the Bible.
Ours is the last generation of the era of sin and evil and the first of the
Messianic Era. Indeed, for the first time in history, there is a growing
consensus of leading rabbis willing to name the man most suited to be the
Messiah, and they are agreeing that he is the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem
Mendel Schneerson. The Rebbe is the spiritual leader of our generation, having
boldly stirred up controversy over vital issues in which other leaders have
remained tragically silent or have even caved in to the growing forces of
darkness. He has upheld the Law perfectly and has worked mightily to strengthen
the observance of the Law by Jews, as well as the observance of the Noachide Law
by gentiles. Through his teaching of chasidus (Jewish mystical teachings,
preserved from Moses and Mount Sinai), he has taught the world that G-d is One,
the Infinite Who renews creation at every moment. The Rebbe is a direct
descendant of King David and has received a true prophecy from G-d that we who
are alive in this generation shall be the first in history to see the coming of
the true messiah. Many Jews are eagerly anticipating the Rebbe's resurrection
from the grave, ready to re-establish the Sanhedrin and anoint the king.
Our job is to finish preparing the way, by announcing the truth and bringing all
of mankind back to the Law immediately. Through our divinely mandated efforts,
we shall now clear the
path for the return of the Garden of Eden and the establishment of the eternal
sinless world promised by Isaiah and the other Biblical prophets.
Do not be confused their plan is just now coming to fruition. It has long been planned, although Orchestrated By the Father. The Revelation of Jesus Christ is at hand.

On false Messianism, idolatry and Lubavitch In an extraordinary essay, David Berger argues that the followers of the Lubavitch Rebbe revere him not just a Messiah, but a God - thus writing themselves out of Judaism altogether By David Berger In the fall of 1995, I published an article in Jewish Action, the journal of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, which decried the silence of rabbinic leaders regarding the declaration on the part of many Lubavitch hassidim that the late Rebbe is the Messiah. This silence, I argued, combined with the acceptance of Messianists as Orthodox Jews in good standing, fundamantally transforms Judaism, betrays the Messianic faith of our ancestors, and grants Christian missionaries victory with respect to a key issue in the millennial debate between Judaism and Christianity.At its annual convention in June 1996, the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) responded to this challenge with a declaration that "there is not and never has been a place in Judaism for the belief that the Messiah, a son of David, will begin a Messianic career only to experience death, burial, and ressurection before completing it." In the aftermath of both the article and the RCA resolution, defenders of Lubavitch presented documents which allegedly demonstrated the acceptability of this patently un-Jewish doctrine. They also circulated a letter in the name of highly distinguished Rabbi R. Ahron Soloveichik of Chicago, which he had authorized only in part and which contains material flatly contradicting statements that he had issued several months after the Rebbe's death, when he affirmed that this belief is possible in Christianity but not in Judaism and is "repugnant to everything Judaism represents." In addition, they argued that Lubavitch hassidim, unlike Christians, observe Jewish law and do not regard their Messiah as the Diety. While I addressed the documents in some detail, I responded to the last point delicately, reluctantly, and briefly. However, recent developments have made this caution obselete and irresponsible. First, despite the isolated efforts of a handful of brave Hassidim, the dominant institutions of the Lubavitch movement are either overtly Messianist or unwilling to declare unequivocally that the Rebbe is not the Messiah. A formal legal ruling (psak din) has just been issued by the head of the Crown Heights Rabbinical Court, the Rabbi of Kfar Chabad, the Lubavitch Vice-Chair of Agudat Ha'rabanim, and other major leaders of the movement, asserting that Jewish law requires belief in the Messiahship of the Rebbe. In my view, this declaration alone is sufficient to exclude its promulgators from Orthodox Judaism; Lubavitch leaders who wish to salvage the movement's standing as an expression of authentic Judaism face the urgent obligation to repudiate the ruling publicly. Any Lubavitch instituition that fulfills this obligation by assuring us of the summary dismissal of anyone who teaches the Messiahship of the Rebbe will deserve to be placed at the apex of our philanthropic priorities. Though the belief that the rebbe is the Messiah is itself a repudiation of a fundamental doctrine, at this point it is only the beginning. We now confront an incredible reality which has surged beyond the confines of false Messianism and the "mere" affirmation of a Second Coming. A process which developed over decades, even generations, in Christianity and the seventeenth-century movement of the Messianic pretender Shabtai Zvi is unfolding with blinding speed in Lubavitch Messianism. To a historian, this is a gripping drama, the opportunity not of one lifetime but of many; to a believing Jew, it is the bizarre rerun of a nightmare. The Lubavitcher Rebbe is becoming God. For example, in the fall of 1996, the Israeli weekly Sichat HaGeullah printed a revised version of the standard Messianist slogan which read "May our Master, Teacher, and Creator (instead of 'Rabbi') the King Messiah live forever," and a few weeks later it declared that it is permissible to bow to the Rebbe because "his entire essence is divinity alone." A Messianist catchism published in Safed describes the Rebbe, who is still physically alive, as in charge "of all that happens in the world. Without his agreement no event can take place. If it is his will, he can bring about anything and who can tell him what to do?...In him the Holy One Blessed be He rests in all His force just as He is...so that this becomes his entire essence." Another Israeli publication (Peninei Geullah) reported approvingly that the Rebbe was addressed after his apparent death as "Honored Rebbe, the Holy One Blessed be He." In a French journal, the date of the Rebbe's death, 3 Tamuz, was described as the day of the King Messiah's apotheose" (i.e. ascent to heaven as a divinity), while an English article in the journal Beis Moshiach characterized the Rebbe as the "Essence and Being of God enclothed in a body,", emphasizing that these are "neither wild exagerations nor poetic parables." Finally, it concluded, "so [who is our God?]...The Rebbe, [King Messiah], that's who.", In the summer 1997 edition of The Jewish Observer, the journal of Agudath Israel in the U.S, Rabbi Chaim Dov Keller of the Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago cited the Beis Moshiach article, alluded to a New York Times advertisment which urged that prayers be directed to the Rebbe, and spoke of a frightening turn toward Avoda Zarah (idolatry).The director of the Chabad Regional Headquarters of Illinois, a mainstream Lubavitch organization which lists 15 institutions, has disseminated a response which affirms that the material cited by Rabbi Keller is perfectly acceptable and that an exceedingly righteous man can become "indistinguishable" from God. The evidence for this, which circulated in limited editions among believers in his divinity, consists of an absolutly literal understanding of citations that speak of the presence of God in rabbis and prophets (but never suggest, of course, that those rabbis are omniscient and omnipotent). Rabbi Keller was kind enough to share with me his trenchant rejoinder to this letter, which, I hope, will find its way into print. It is evident, then, that this belief, that the Rebbe is literally God and that he should be the object of prayer, has entered mainstream Lubavitch. In the terminology of Jewish law, this is idolatry. One who teaches this theology and urges that it be ritually expressed is an inciter to idolatry, not an admirable educator or practioner of outreach. One who supports an institution in which this is taught violates a prohibition so severe that there is a requirement to die rather than transgress. If a believer in this theology slaughtered an animal ritually, it has the status of a non-kosher carcass, which can undermine the kashrut of a restaurant or a home. A divorce document signed by such a believer or a Torah scroll written by him are invalid. A non Jew who converts to this sort of Judaism remains, nontheless, a non- Jew. Despite its polemical tone, I regard this article as a vehicle for information whose implications should be beyond debate. Our ancestors gave their lives rather than worship a divine Messiah. To the extent that if we so much as consider the acceptance within Orthodox Judaism of people who direct prayers to a deceased Rabbi perceived as the omnipotent, omniscient Deity, we launch an assult upon the very core of the Jewish religion. AGADAH: The Gemara cites the verse in Shir ha'Shirim (3:7-8) that states, "Behold, it is the bed of Shlomo, surrounded by sixty Giborim (mighty men) of the mighty men of Israel. They all grasp the sword and are trained in warfare; each man with his sword upon his thigh, [protecting] against the dread of the nights." The Chachamim derive from this verse that a Dayan, when issuing a ruling, should be as fearful as though a sword is placed beneath him between his legs and Gehinom is below him.According to the Gemara's Derashah, who are the "sixty" men mentioned in the verse?
(a) RASHI explains that the mighty men are the Talmidei Chachamim who comprise the Sanhedrin, who are fearful as though a sword is placed beneath them etc. However, we know that the Sanhedrin was comprised of *seventy* Dayanim, and not just sixty. Where are the other ten?Rashi in Sanhedrin (7b) says that according to this Derashah, the number sixty in the verse is indeed not an exact figure. The point of the verse is to emphasize that Talmidei Chachamim should be adequately prepared when they issue rulings.
The MAHARSHA (in Sanhedrin) brings support for Rashi's interpretation of who the mighty men of the verse are from a Midrash Rabah (Bamidbar 11:7) which explains that the sixty men are Dayanim.
(b) TOSFOS argues and says that "Giborim" refers to the sixty myriads (600,000) of the Jewish people. (This also has its source in the Midrash, ibid. and Yalkut Shimoni 2:986.) It seems that according to Tosfos, the verse is saying that Shlomo ha'Melech, (Solomon of Moloch) the Dayan, is surrounded by the Jewish people who come to him to judge their cases, and he and his associates must be afraid of Gehinom.
The ROKE'ACH (on Shir ha'Shirim) brings support for this from a Gematria: "Shishim Giborim" is equal in numerical value to "Eleh Shishim Rivo."
(c) THE VILNA GA'ON (ibid.) supports Rashi's interpretation. He explains that when Sanhedrin sat, ten (of the most important members) sat in the middle of the group, and they were surrounded by the other sixty. These are the "sixty mighty men *around* the bed of Shlomo. QUESTION: The Gemara says that the "Talmidei Chachamim in Bavel despise each other." How could the Gemara Bavli say this about the great and holy Amora'im? Certainly they were not suspected of committing any sins, and if so, why were they permitted to despise each other?ANSWER: The Gemara in Kidushin (30b) cites the verse, "Happy is the person who has many children, he will not be embarrassed when he speaks with his enemies at the gate" (Tehilim 127:5). The Gemara asks, who are the enemies? Rebbi Chiya bar Aba answers that the verse is referring to a father and his son, or a Rebbi and his Talmid, when they learn together, at which time they are called "enemies" of each other. The Gemara adds that "they do not leave from there until they become beloved unto one another." Rashi explains that they are "enemies" because they constantly challenge each other with questions and are not satisfied until they are convinced that they have arrived at the truth. According to that Gemara, the Talmidei Chachamim in Bavel do not literally hate each other. Rather, they look, at times, like enemies because they learn together and challenge each other as if they hated each other, with the sole intention of arriving at the truth.
Why does our Gemara specifically say that the Talmidei Chachamim *in Bavel* despise each other, and not those in Eretz Yisrael? The Gemara in Sanhedrin (24a) tells us that the Talmidei Chachamim in Eretz Yisrael are "sweet to each other" when they argue about Halachah, in contrast to the Talmidei Chachamim in Bavel who "fight and have heated arguments" with each other when arguing about Halachah (see Rashi there). When the Gemara there lists examples of Talmidei Chachamim in Eretz Yisrael, all of the examples are Tana'im. On the other hand, the Talmidei Chachamim in Bavel were all Amora'im. This indicates that the Gemara means that there was Yeridas ha'Doros, a spiritual generation gap. In the times of the Tana'im, the truth was much clearer, and it was possible to arrive at the truth by peacefully discussing it with each other. By the time of the Amora'im, though, the truth had become cloudy and the only way to come to a clear understanding of the truth was by arguing it out dialectically. In the following report, Sharon Shenhav, who serves as Civil Law Faculty Advisor to the Schechter Institute Center for Women in Jewish Law, describes her recent election to the Commission to Appoint Dayanim in Israel. Shenhav is an international women’s rights lawyer recognized as an expert on marriage and divorce in Jewish law. She has represented hundreds of women in rabbinical courts in Israel and has been a member of the Israeli delegation to the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Following the report is a recent interview with Sharon that appeared in Ha'aretz newspaper.
To my great surprise, I have been elected to serve on the Commission to Appoint Dayanim for a term of three years as the Israel Bar Association representative to the Commission. I will be sitting with nine other men including the two Chief Rabbis, two dayanim from the Bet Din Hagadol (Rabbinical Court of Appeals), two members of Knesset, the new Minister of Justice, Tommy Lapid of the Shinui Party, and whomever will replace the Minister of Religious Affairs, if indeed, he is replaced. (At the time of this writing, it is not clear whether Israel will continue to have a Ministry of Religious Affairs. The coalition agreement signed between Prime Minister Sharon and the Shinui Party provided for the dissolution of the Ministry of Religious Affairs within one year, as well as the transfer of supervision of the rabbinical courts from the Ministry of Religious Affairs to the Ministry of Justice.)
The mandate of the Commission is to select dayanim from a field of candidates who are all Orthodox rabbis to serve in the twelve regional Batei Din (Rabbinical Courts) in Israel and the Bet Din Hagadol (Rabbinical Court of Appeals), all of which have exclusive jurisdiction over marriage, divorce and conversion.

Sanhedrin 32b: Follow the Chachamim to Lishkas ha'Gazis Gershon Dubin <gershon.dubin@ juno.com> asks: In the list of "beis din yafeh" why is "achar chachamim lelishkas hagazis" last; should be first? Gershon ---- The Kollel replies: I assume that the basis for your question is both that the Sanhedrin sat in Lashkas ha'Gazis well before the times of the Batei Dinim of the Chachamim mentioned in the Gemara, and the the Sanhedrin of the Lishkas ha'Gazis were clearly a more competent authority than any of the Batei Dinim mentioned in our Gemara. Excellent question (although I did not find any Acharon who addresses it directly). An answer may be suggested if we first consider why the Gemara had to learn from "Tzedek Tzedek" that one should go to the Sanhedrin in Lishkas ha'Gazis; the verse says openly "When you have a doubt as to the Halachah, go to the place which Hashem will choose..." (Devarim 17:8). Apparently, the Gemara means that even when a person can go to a lower Halachic authority for a ruling (i.e. the lower level court was not stymied), it is best to go straight to the top, to the Lishkas ha'Gazis. The Gemara, then, is teaching two different pieces of advice (perhaps the two are learnt from the two "Tzedek"s of the verse): 1) A person should not go to an impromptu court, but to the established court of the region ("Achar Chachamim -- l'Yeshivah!"). This teaching is accompanied by a number of examples which describe the more famous courts of each region in Israel. 2) A person should not even go to an established court if he can go to the Great Sanhedrin of the Lishkas ha'Gazis ("Achar Chachamim -- l'Lishkas ha'Gazis!"). This is obviously a much greater Chidush, since even though an established court is available and we are advising to go to another court, the Sanhedrin. If so, the Beraisa's teachings are arranged in order of "Lo Zu Af Zu": Not only should one avoid non-established courts, one should even avoid regional established courts if it is possible to go to the Great Sanhedrin in the Lishkas ha'Gazis, whose authority surpasses that of any other court.
Amora'im / confusion
) IS AN "EVED" LIKE "KARKA"
QUESTION: The Gemara cites a Machlokes Amora'im whether or not a lender of a loan with a Shi'abud can collect Avadim for his loan just like he may collect Karka. The Gemara explains that the Machlokes Amora'im is dependant on whether an Eved is like Karka or like Metaltelin. Other Halachos that are dependant on this question include whether a Pruzbul can take effect on an Eved, and whether Avadim can be acquired through Kinyan Agav with Karka.Why are the Amora'im debating this point? It seems that the Mishnah later (96b) itself discusses this explicitly. In the Mishnah there, Rebbi Meir and the Chachamim argue whether or not Avadim are like Karka, and whether or not the Halachah of "v'Heshiv Es ha'Gezeilah" applies to stolen Avadim. (Rebbi Meir says that they are not like Karka.) In addition, the Mishnah teaches in numerous places that all of the Halachos that are unique to Karka apply to Avadim, because of a Hekesh that compares Avadim with Karka (for example, there is no Shevu'ah, Ona'ah, or Tashlumei Kefel for Avadim (Bava Metzia 56a)). I have a coworker who used to ask me many questions about Judaism. One morning when he came to work he told me his children asked him why they have to go to church. He didn't know what to tell them. He said an honest answer would have been, "Go to church, so you won't go to Hell." But he didn't know if he should be so blunt with his young children.Then, he suddenly looked at me and asked, "Alice, what would you tell your children? Don't Jews believe in Hell?" I said that I had never been taught the concept in my religious education and had never heard it discussed in synagogue. I was taught that Judaism emphasizes this world. So, does Judaism believe in Hell?
In fact, Judaism does believe in "life after death." We do not call it "heaven and hell"; but we refer to the "world to come" - olam haba and gehinom - "hell." Gehinom - a purification process - is part of the world to come.
When a person dies, his soul gets a chance to 'think objectively' about his lifetime spent on earth. Depending on how the person spent his lifetime, this can be a painful process in which the soul mourns its bad deeds, lost opportunities and wasted potential or it can be a process of joy in which the soul delights in its closeness to G-d.
Ultimately, the gehinom process is temporary, and eventually enables the person to enjoy the benefits of all the good things he did during his lifetime.
Although there is a Jewish concept of 'heaven' and 'hell,' we nevertheless emphasize this world. Here's a parable to explain:
A wealthy man goes on a cruise ship. The ship sinks, and he finds himself afloat in a tiny rubber raft. This raft is his only hope of arriving safely to his family, his mansion and all his wealth.
Judaism looks at this world like a raft. By following the survival manual - the Torah - this little raft can bring us safely to the World to Come.
Therefore, Judaism emphasizes this world. Only through good deeds in this world does a person earn reward in the next.
We educate our children about the World to Come, including the idea that no bad action goes without redress. But the emphasis is positive and the aim is to help everyone maximize potential and live the best life possible.

In the small town of Tschortkow in Galicia (Poland) there lived a learned and saintly man called Rabbi Hershelle Tschortkower.
He was busy night and day, for he never refused his help to those who needed him. Some people sought his advice; others his blessing. And then there were the poor widows, orphans, sick people, and old ones who needed money for their daily bread. He was forever collecting money for those who were unable to help themselves.
One day Rabbi Hershelle Tschortkower decided that he needed an assistant, for there was too much work for him to do alone. So he hired a shamash (secretary) to share his responsibilities. Anschel Moses Rothschild, who was then a poor young man, was happy to accept this job. The Rabbi and the shamash became dear friends.
But, after a few years, Anschel Moses decided to get married. He went to live in the nearby town of Sniatyn, where his father-in-law opened a store for him. The Rabbi was happy about the marriage, but he was sad to see his shamash leave, for he had been a faithful, devoted assistant.
Several months later, on the night before Passover when a solemn search for leaven is conducted in the Jewish home, a terrible thing happened. Rabbi Hershelle Tschortkower was examining the drawers in his desk, when he discovered that his purse with five hundred guldens was missing! That was money that had been collected to help orphans, widows and others in need.
The Rabbi pulled out the entire drawer and checked the desk more carefully. Then he pulled out the rest of the drawers to search them again. He looked under the desk and behind the desk, but the purse was not to be found. The Rabbi's heart was filled with pain. It took a long time to collect all that money, and now he had no way of helping unfortunate, helpless poor people.
Then he began to feel even more sad, for he suddenly realized that the only one who had known about the purse was Anschel Moses. The Rabbi had always trusted him; but who else could have taken the money? There was no other explanation.
Yet the Rabbi found it hard to believe that Anschel Moses might be a thief. Perhaps, thought the Rabbi, there was an explanation for the whole thing. Maybe Anschel Moses had borrowed the money when he went to Sniatyn to get married. Maybe he was already planning to return it? The Rabbi decided not to tell anyone about the missing money. He did not want to embarrass Anschel Moses, or let people know that he even suspected him. He decided to travel to Sniatyn to discuss the matter with Anschel Moses and give him an opportunity to clear up the matter.
Immediately after the festival, the Rabbi hired a wagon and went to visit Anschel Moses. Anschel Moses was very pleased to have such an honored visitor. Then the Rabbi told him the reason for his visit. The Rabbi said that he was sure Anschel Moses had only meant to borrow the money, and he was sure would return it now. G-d would forgive him for his wrongdoing, and no one would ever know about it. If it had been his own money, the Rabbi said, he would not have been so concerned, but this was money collected for people who otherwise might starve or suffer hardships, G-d forbid. And he himself had little money, so the stolen money had to be found immediately.
As the Rabbi spoke, Anschel grew pale and frightened, and his eyes filled with tears. He went to his money-box, emptied it, and without a word gave all the money to the Rabbi. The money was counted, but it was only half of the total sum. With deep regret, Anschel Moses promised to give the rest of the money to the Rabbi as quickly as possible.
The Rabbi was both relived and saddened. Anschel had not said word in self-defense. He had offered no excuses for his conduct. The tears in his eyes were proof of his shame and guilt. That made the Rabbi sad. He was happy, however, that Anschel Moses had realized his mistake and was returning the money.
The Rabbi thanked Anschel Moses. They shook hands and embraced, and the Rabbi said that everything was forgiven and forgotten.
During the next few months, Anschel Moses worked longer hours than ever and saved his money carefully to repay the Rabbi. The Rabbi realized that Anschel Moses was an honest and fine young man who had indeed deserved his trust and respect. Anschel Moses had made a mistake, but he was eager to make amends.
One morning, there was a loud knock on the Rabbi's door. He was surprised to see the Chief of Police standing there. The Chief asked the Rabbi to come with him to the Police Station on some important business. A horse and carriage were waiting in front of the house.
The Rabbi was very puzzled. He was afraid that there might be a serious problem. He prayed to G-d it should not be connected with any danger to the Jewish community.
The Police Chief brought the Rabbi to his office and in a very friendly way asked him if anything had been stolen from his house recently.
The Rabbi who had never spoken to anyone about the missing money was completely surprised. He told the Police Chief about the missing purse, but assured him that the one who took it had since returned the money. It was a young man who was getting married and needed the money. He really only meant to borrow it. The Police Chief asked a few more questions and he looked very bewildered by the entire story.
"You Jews are a wonderful people," the Police Chief said with respect and admiration. "Never in my life have I heard of anything like this!"
Then he opened the drawer of his desk, pulled out a purse and handed it to the Rabbi. Do you recognize it?" he asked.
It was now the Rabbi's turn to look bewildered. This was certainly his missing purse, but how did it come here? The door opened and a police officer brought in a handcuffed peasant woman.
"Do you recognize her?" asked the Chief of Police. The Rabbi shook his head. "No, I'm afraid I don't," he answered, still mystified by the happenings.
"Well, I suppose you are busy with your work and do not notice the cleaning woman who comes to clean your house. Anyway, it does not matter. She has confessed." And then the Chief of Police told his story.
When the woman was cleaning the house before Passover, she happened to find the purse. She took it to her house and buried it in the garden near a tree.
A few days later, she took some golden coins and went to buy new clothes. Then she decided to stop working, for now she had plenty of money. A week passed, and she took some more guldens to buy new boots and shoes. The neighbors became suspicious and reported it to the police.
It didn't take long for them to catch her. They found her digging in the garden, and when she was opening the purse, the police arrested her. There were only four coins missing. "Here you are, Rabbi," said the Chief of Police with a friendly smile.
"But you know," he said, "I just can't understand what you said. Why did that young man pay for the theft when he was not guilty? And why didn't he explain to you that he was not at fault?"
The Rabbi shook his head. This was something he could not explain.
The next day the Rabbi traveled to Sniatyn. He rushed out of the wagon, ran up to Anschel Moses, and tearfully asked his forgiveness. "Why did you not tell me that you were innocent?" asked the Rabbi in a trembling voice.
Anschel Moses explained that the sadness and worry of the Rabbi had deeply touched him. He knew that if the truth were told, and he offered to help, the Rabbi would have refused to accept it, knowing that Anschel Moses was far from a rich man. So Anschel Moses and his wife gave everything they owned to the Rabbi, and for many months they saved every penny to complete the missing amount.
The Rabbi embraced Anschel Moses and blessed him to have great riches so that he might always be able to help the poor and needy of his people. "Here is the money you so kindly paid out of your pocket. Go to Frankfort, Germany, where you will have a better chance to succeed in business, as well as to do good deeds. May G-d be with you and your wife and children for generations to come."
The blessing of Rabbi Hershelle Tschortkower was fulfilled. Anschel Moses became a successful merchant and banker in Frankfort. His son, Mayer Anschel Rothschild, was even more successful. His five sons settled in different capitals in Europe, and they carried on their banking business in partnership and their wealth increased from generation to generation.
A grandson of Mayer Anschel, Baron Edmund de Rothschild of France, head of the House of Rothschild, earned the name of Hanadiv Hayadua -- "The Famous Benefactor." He helped many Jews in many different ways. He died in Paris in 1934 at the age of ninety.
So this was the secret of the Rothschilds' success -- the unselfish generosity of an ordinary man, a man who gave charity without letting anyone know of his great sacrifice.

Rabbi Tzvi Ashkenazi was one of the greatest rabbis and Torah scholars of his time. Unfortunately, because of his opposition to Shabtai-Tzvi, the infamous false messiah of the early eighteenth century-he was forced to flee from his city of Amsterdam. He promised his family that, when safe, he would let them know his whereabouts. After wandering from place to place, Rabbi Tzvi arrived one Friday afternoon at Frankfurt-au-Maine. Without letting anyone know who he was, he entered the shul and joined a group of other wandering Jews who had come to pray. After the services, one of the prominent members of the community, Meir Anshel Rothschild, invited Rabbi Tzvi and several other poor people for the Shabbat meals. At the Shabbat table, Meir Anshel recognized that one of the poor guests was, in fact, Rabbi Tzvi Ashkenazi, the chief rabbi of Amsterdam. It was obvious to Meir Anshel that the Rabbi didn't want his identity known, and so he treated Rabbi Tzvi like the rest of the guests. After Shabbat, Rabbi Tzvi wished his host a "good week" and went on his way. Meir Anshel could not stop thinking about Rabbi Tzvi. Why was he forced to wander around among a group of poor beggars? How could he have paid Rabbi Tzvi the respect and attention due to him? Suddenly, Meir Anshel called his servant and ordered his carriage. He settled himself inside and rode off. Meir Anshel slowed his horses when he saw the figure of Rabbi Tzvi walking along the Judenstrauss toward the city exit. Meir Anshel called out to the Rabbi and then descended from his carriage. "Please forgive me, dear Rabbi. I recognized you at my Shabbat table but could see that you did not want your identity known. Therefore, I did not treat you with the proper honor and respect due you." "I knew that you recognized me," smiled Rabbi Tzvi, "and was happy that you did not betray my secret." "I followed you not just to apologize," began Meir Anshel, "but also to give you this." And with that, Meir Anshel held out a purse full of gold coins. "I am certain that, so far from home, and wandering as you are, you will find the money very useful." Rabbi Tzvi refused the money, no matter how Meir Anshel persisted. "King Solomon said: 'One who hates receiving gifts will live longer.'" Rabbi Tzvi reminded him. Seeing that he could not prevail upon Rabbi Tzvi to accept the gift, Meir Anshel put the purse on the ground and said, "Heaven and earth are my witness that I am declaring this purse of money ownerless." Meir Anshel said good-bye, got into his carriage and rode home. Rabbi Tzvi stood for awhile contemplating the situation. He decided that, seeing that the purse was now ownerless, there was no reason to let it fall into unworthy hands. He picked up the purse, looked inside, and raised his eyes toward heaven. He prayed that G-d should send Meir Anshel success in his business affairs, and that the blessing of success would continue for his children and grandchildren for all generations. This blessing was indeed fulfilled, for from that day on, Meir Anshel's business prospered to an extraordinary degree. The "House of Rothschild" became famous the world over. LONDON (Agence France-Presse) — Control of Mikhail
Khodorkovsky's shares in the Russian oil giant Yukos have passed to renowned
banker Jacob Rothschild, under a
deal they concluded prior to Mr. Khodorkovsky's arrest, the Sunday Times
reported.
Voting rights to the shares passed to Mr. Rothschild,
67, under a "previously unknown arrangement" designed to take effect
in the event that Mr. Khodorkovsky could no longer "act as a
beneficiary" of the shares, it said.
Mr. Khodorkovsky, 40, whom Russian authorities arrested
at gunpoint and jailed pending further investigation last week, was said by the
Sunday Times to have made the arrangement with Mr. Rothschild when he realized
he was facing arrest.
Mr. Rothschild now controls the voting rights on a stake
in Yukos worth almost $13.5 billion, the newspaper said in a dispatch from
Moscow.
Mr. Khodorkovsky owns 4 percent of Yukos directly and 22
percent through a trust of which he is the sole beneficiary, according to
Russian analysts.
From the figures reported in the Sunday Times, it
appeared Mr. Rothschild had received control of all Mr. Khodorkovsky's shares.
The two have known each other for years "through
their mutual love of the arts" and their positions as directors of the Open
Russia Foundation, Yukos' philanthropic branch, it said.
Russian authorities Thursday froze billions of dollars
of shares held by Mr. Khodorkovsky and his top lieutenants in Yukos — throwing
control of the country's largest oil company into limbo and causing frenzied
selling on financial markets.
Russian prosecutors said owners of the shares are still
entitled to dividends and retain voting rights, but can no longer sell their
stakes.
They said the freeze was necessary as collateral for the
$1 billion that Mr. Khodorkovsky and his associates are accused of
misappropriating during the 1990s.
Mr. Rothschild is the British head of Europe's wealthy
and influential Rothschild family, and runs his own investment empire

8. Chabad. Chabad, the official name of the Lubavitch Hassidic movement, has sought since World War II to become almost a parallel structure for world Jewry. Chabad generally relates to the rest of the Jewish world when it wants to ask for something, either funding for its institutions or legislation on who is a Jew. Otherwise it does not seek to be an active player in the world Jewish polity except on its own terms, which means as a separate entity without accepting any kind of overall discipline.

Talmudic scholar and one of the leading Orthodox rabbis of Eastern Europe. A graduate from the famous Volozhin Yeshiva, he was conversant in math, engineering, and a number of languages. Mohilever encouraged Baron Edmond de Rothschild to support the resettling of Russian families in Eretz Israel and was a mediator between the settlers and Rothschild in various disagreements which arose. He was the founder of Mizrachi, a religious Zionist organization, and one of the founders of the Hovevei Zion (Lovers of Zion, 1881).
