1) Anticipation
The world is ready for something new. Everybody thinks that life has changed and will never be the same again. "America of yesterday is not the America of tomorrow," wrote one journalist, and many commentators added that the anticipated change is not necessarily American but a worldwide change.
There is an anticipation for a new world order. Yes, the very world order that the Rebbe MH"M asked us to believe in and work towards.
2) The Suddenness
It all happened so suddenly. The American military didn’t have time to react. If somebody had told them the day before that Komikozies would take over American passenger planes, who would have believed it? If somebody would have said that the Twin Towers would no longer be standing by 10:30 the next morning, who would have believed him? If someone would have said a plane would deliberately crash into the Pentagon in the capitol of the United States, wouldn’t he have been laughed out of town? If someone would have said that the president of the greatest superpower in the world would have to flee for his life to an undisclosed destination, wouldn’t we have thought him crazy?
But it all happened. Much faster than anyone could have ever imagined.
Yeah he fled at command, for public spectacle long, long after sitting in the classroom with children reading a story about a Pet Goat well after the first Plane had struck and many minutes after the second plane struck the second Tower.
This is the answer to those who say, "the immediate coming of Moshiach seems unrealistic"; "tomorrow morning Moshiach will rule the world"; tomorrow night we will be able to learn the first Torah teachings of Melech HaMoshiach."
The giving of the Torah the Mishnah and Gemara of Talmud Bavli, the Oral tradition of the sons of the synagogue of satan.
Until now, people shook their heads at someone who said in perfect faith that "any minute now, Moshiach will be here." Yet events which were just as unimaginable happened. Suddenly.

3) Seeking a Leader
Now, while everything is in confusion, is the time to realize more than ever before, that there is no leader other than the Creator of the world, and that we need a human leader of the caliber of Moshiach.
How thrilling it was to read this thought in an article written by a senior journalist for Maariv, Mr. Shalom Yerushalmi. One would think he was a Chabadnik!

4) Asking for the Right Leader
Things are so much clearer when everybody knows there is no leader. The president of the greatest superpower in the world fled, hid, and was flown away. At least at first, he looked utterly shaken. When he recovered somewhat it was too late. Everybody saw he didn’t have what it takes. Another leader was needed.
Isn’t this the best time to approach a neighbor or relative, friend or acquaintance, or even a Jew on the street and say, "Such a complicated world can’t manage without a leader. Now you also realize that we need somebody else. Perhaps the time has come to ask for a real leader, Moshiach?"

5) "It Will Become Clarified and White..."
One doesn’t need to delve into it that deeply to understand the significance of what happened. The two sides of good and evil are so clear, freedom versus oppression, construction versus destruction. Good and evil have been clearly delineated as the prophet says will happen before Moshiach comes.
6) "Money Will be Lacking"
The newspapers had headlines like, "The terrorist attack has caused a recession which every American, and subsequently every person in the world, will feel." "The stock market is dropping."
Boeing fired 30,000 employees; airlines have fired tens of thousands of additional employees; consumer spending in New York is at its lowest ebb and is affecting the rest of the world. The stock markets in Tokyo, New York, Hong Kong, and the entire world have gone down. Expert American economists say, "The last time such a drop occurred was 84 years ago."
Imagine what lies in store for those countries that are less financially stable... Yet another sign of Yemos HaMoshiach. "Ha’pruta techsar min ha’kis" (A coin will be lacking in one’s pocket).
7) Gog U’Magog?
No, this is not the war of Gog and Magog. The Rebbe said there would not be another war of Gog and Magog before Moshiach’s arrival, yet this is still a great war. Not about a particular piece of land, but about the whole world. What will rule the world, democracy and freedom (which the Rebbe so highly praised), or blood and terror?

8) A Prophecy Comes True
These days, the words of the Zohar are being mentioned again and again. "After another twelve days, everybody will tremble and the sun will be dimmed at midday like the day was darkened on the day the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed, to the point that heavens and earth were invisible.

9) The Newspapers Cry Out – Geula!
It’s hard to believe but even the religious newspapers are writing a lot about the tragedy from the Geula perspective. The headlines were large and stood out. Apparently it took a tragedy of this magnitude to get even the religious newspapers to talk about Moshiach. As the Rebbeim said, starting with the Alter Rebbe, when Moshiach comes they will write about it in the newspapers. Get ready! We’re in the middle of the process.

SHUL NOTES
This morning the Zohar citation came to our shul as well, so we feel compelled to share. We took out a lot of the stuff we don't understand and stopped short of the amazing description of things yet to come which bring on the messianic epoch (a huge star reveals itself to the world, a fire comes out of a cave under Jerusalem and a whole bunch more apocalyptic stuff). The following events we think we understand to be the WTC.
...It will be seen on the beginning of the
twenty-fifth day of the sixth month (Elul)... And on that day three high walls
will collapse in the city of Rome. And a great hall will fall. And the ruler of
that city will die... And at that time great wars will erupt in all directions.
And faith will not be found among them.

A couple notes: The date of the event was the 23rd of Elul; we think the 25th
is used because it's the traditional first day of Creation. Rome is
interchangeable with America, of course. Other than that - go to your local Zohar

Maimonides is teaching that unless humanity accepts fundamental morality – Thou shalt not rape, Thou shalt not murder- a free humanity will not endure. The Torah of the seven Noahide laws must be accepted by everyone; those who do not, and have the capability to destroy, are automatically in the category of "those who come to murder innocent people, must be killed before they can wreak their havoc." All of Shekhem shares in the guilt of their Prince if they did not bring him to justice; all who harbor, aid or abet terrorists share in their guilt. There are no innocent citizens of terrorist societies. Had the Germans declared the destruction of Jewish property unacceptable after Kristalnacht, the holocaust would have ended before it began. The only way for terrorism to be stopped is by not allowing it to continue unpunished; the only way for civilization to endure- especially in a global village with mass weapons of destruction- is by insisting on the acceptance of the seven Noahide laws of humanity by every citizen of the world.

Although many of the local Jewish leaders are upset, the only
group in the Fort Lauderdale area to react was the local Jewish Defense League
chapter. Another group, Christians for Moses, which was co-founded by JDL

Brockett has been holding weekly protests in front of the store. Gersh and

Jewish law institute launched in DC

Jewish legal experts have created a new institute that will educate jurists and
others about 2,000 years of Jewish law and promote the application of the
teachings to contemporary legal disputes and other modern-day issues.
The launch of the Washington-based National Institute for Judaic Law was marked
Tuesday night with a kosher dinner at the Supreme Court attended by 200 people,
including three Supreme Court Justices - Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Stephen Breyer,
and Antonin Scalia.
US President George W. Bush sent greetings and applauded the institute for
promoting an
"understanding of Judaism's rich tradition of legal thought."
"As we face new challenges and welcome new opportunities, our society must
continue to promote good character and strong values. Through the study and
teaching of Jewish law and philosophy you are contributing to a growing culture
of service, citizenship, and responsibility in America," Bush wrote.
Scalia, in a letter to the institute's founder, Noson Gurary, wrote that
"Jewish law is certainly one of the oldest and most highly developed
systems"
and explained why the comparative study of legal traditions was beneficial.
"The idea is to make Jewish law more accessible to everyone," said
Washington
lawyer Alyza Lewin. Both Lewin and her father Nathan Lewin are helping
establish the institute.
Last year, Alyza Lewin filed a brief to the Supreme Court based on the Talmud's
take on capital punishment when the court was readying to hear a case on the
constitutionality of the electric chair.
"Legal scholars often like to know what other legal traditions have said
about
certain issues," said Alyza Lewin.
Filing that kind of opinion is only part of the institute's mandate.
It will also promote the teaching of Jewish law, develop curricula on Jewish
law that can be integrated into traditional law school courses, and serve as a
resource for anyone wanting to know what the vast Jewish legal tradition has to
say on various issues.
The institute's first project, already underway, explores how Jewish law can be
applied to modern-day issues surrounding corporate ethics, an idea spurred by
the recent corporate scandals involving Enron and Worldcom.
Gurary, who teaches at the State University of New York at Buffalo, thought up
the idea of the institute about nine months ago.
"By demonstrating the philosophy of Jewish law and its moral values, we can
bring a little beacon of light in this world," Gurary said.
"I think this is what we need now, in this day and page."

Illinois Allows Executions for Terrorism

SPRINGFIELD, Ill.- Illinois lawmakers overrode the governor's veto and voted
unanimously Thursday to make terrorism a death penalty offense.
The bill, passed 55-0 by the Senate, also gave law enforcement
new tools to
fight terrorism. The House previously overrode Gov. George Ryan's veto; with
the Senate vote Thursday, the bill became law.
Ryan had objected to the bill because it expanded the death penalty before
lawmakers could consider overhauling the state's capital punishment system.
Ryan suspended executions in Illinois nearly three years ago, after 13 people
on death row were found to
have been wrongly convicted.
Using his veto power, Ryan revised the bill to require a meticulous court
review of each death penalty case, bar executions of the retarded and videotape
murder interrogations.
But lawmakers of both parties decided that death-penalty reforms should be
debated separately.
The new crime-fighting powers contained in the bill include more power to
obtain search warrants and bug telephones to investigate suspected terrorists.
The law also makes it a felony to take a gun on an airplane and lets the
attorney general freeze terrorists' assets.
Republican Sen. Peter Roskam, the bill's sponsor, said the law sends a clear
message about the consequences of terrorism.
"This is a situation where you want no ambiguity, where you want all bases
covered," he said.

The Bush administration is developing a parallel legal system in which
terrorism suspects -- U.S. citizens and noncitizens alike -- may be
investigated, jailed, interrogated, tried and punished without legal
protections guaranteed by the ordinary system, lawyers inside and outside the
government say.
The elements of this new system are already familiar from President Bush's
orders and his aides' policy statements and legal briefs: indefinite military
detention for those designated "enemy combatants," liberal use of
"material
witness" warrants, counterintelligence-style wiretaps and searches led by
law
enforcement officials
and, for noncitizens, trial by military commissions or
deportation after strictly closed hearings.
Only now, however, is it becoming clear how these elements could ultimately
interact.
For example, under authority it already has or is asserting in court cases, the
administration, with approval of the special Foreign Intelligence Surveillance
Court, could order a clandestine search of a U.S. citizen's home and, based on
the information gathered, secretly declare the citizen an enemy combatant, to
be held indefinitely at a U.S. military base. Courts would have very limited
authority to second-guess the detention, to the extent that they were aware of
it.
Administration officials, noting that they have chosen to prosecute suspected
Taliban member John Walker Lindh, "shoe bomber" Richard Reid and
alleged Sept.
11 conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui in ordinary federal courts, say the parallel
system is meant to be used selectively, as a complement to conventional
processes, not as a substitute. But, they say, the parallel system is necessary
because terrorism is a form of war as well as a form of crime, and it must not
only be punished after incidents occur, but also prevented and disrupted
through the gathering of timely intelligence.
"I wouldn't call it an alternative system," said an administration
official who
has helped devise the legal response to the terrorist
attacks of Sept. 11,
2001. "But it is different than the criminal procedure system we all know
and
love. It's a separate track for people we catch in the war."
At least one American has been shifted from the ordinary legal system into the
parallel one: alleged al Qaeda "dirty bomb" plotter Jose Padilla, who
is being
held at a Navy brig, without the right to communicate with a lawyer or anyone
else. U.S. officials have told the courts that they can detain and interrogate
him until the executive branch declares an end to the war against
terrorism.
The final outlines of this parallel system will be known only after the courts,
including probably the Supreme Court, have settled a variety of issues being
litigated. But the prospect of such a system has triggered a fierce debate.
Civil libertarians accuse the Bush administration of an executive-branch power
grab that will erode the rights and freedoms that terrorists are trying to
destroy -- and that were enhanced only recently in response to abuses during
the civil rights era, Vietnam and Watergate.
"They are trying to embed in law a vast expansion of executive authority
with
no judicial oversight in the name of national security," said Kate Martin,
director of the Center for National Security Studies, a Washington-based
nonprofit group that has challenged the administration approach in court.
"This
is more tied to statutory legal authority than J. Edgar Hoover's political
spying, but that may make it more dangerous. You could have the law serving as
a vehicle for all kinds of abuses."
Administration officials say that they are acting under ample legal authority
derived from statutes, court decisions and wartime powers that the president
possesses as commander in chief under the Constitution.
"When you have a long period of time when you're not engaged in a war,
people
tend to forget, or put in backs of their minds, the necessity for certain types
of government action used when we are in danger, when we are facing eyeball to
eyeball a serious threat," Solicitor General Theodore B. Olson, who leads
the
administration's anti-terrorism legal team in the federal courts, said in an
interview.
Broadly speaking, the debate between the administration and its critics is not
so much about the methods the government seeks to employ as it is about who
should act as a check against
potential abuses.
Executive Decisions
Civil libertarians insist that the courts should searchingly review Bush's
actions, so that he is always held accountable to an independent branch of
government. Administration officials, however, imply that the main check on the
president's performance in wartime is political -- that if the public perceives
his approach to terrorism is excessive or ineffective, it will vote him out of
office.
"At the end of the day in our constitutional system, someone will have to
decide whether that [decision to designate someone an enemy combatant] is a
right or just decision," Olson said. "Who will finally decide that?
Will it be
a judge, or will it be the president of the United States, elected by the
people, specifically to perform that function, with the capacity to have the
information at his disposal with the assistance of those who work for him?"
Probably the most hotly disputed element of the administration's approach is
its contention that the president alone can designate individuals, including
U.S. citizens, as enemy combatants, who can be detained with no access to
lawyers or family members unless and until the president determines, in effect,
that hostilities between the United States and that individual have ended.
Padilla was held as a material witness for a month after his May 8 arrest in
Chicago before he was designated an enemy combatant. He is one of two U.S.
citizens being held as enemy combatants at the Navy brig in Charleston, S.C.
The other is Yaser Esam Hamdi, a Saudi Taliban fighter who was captured by
American troops in Afghanistan and sent to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay,
Cuba, until it was discovered that he was born in Louisiana.
Attorneys are challenging their detentions in federal court. While civil
libertarians concede that the executive branch has well-established authority
to name and confine members of enemy forces during wartime, they maintain that
it is unconstitutional to subject U.S. citizens to indefinite confinement on
little more than the president's declaration, especially given the inherently
open-ended nature of an unconventional war against
terrorism.
"The notion that the executive branch can decide by itself that an American
citizen can be put in a military camp, incommunicado, is frightening," said
Morton H. Halperin, director of the Washington office of the Open Society
Institute. "They're entitled to hold him on the grounds that he is in fact
at
war with the U.S., but there has to be an opportunity for him to contest those
facts."
However, the Bush administration, citing two World War II-era cases -- the
Supreme Court's ruling upholding a military commission trial for a captured
American-citizen Nazi saboteur, and a later federal appeals court decision
upholding the imprisonment of an Italian American caught as a member of Italian
forces in Europe -- says there is ample precedent for what it is doing.
Courts traditionally understand that they must defer to the executive's greater
expertise and capability when it comes to looking at such facts and making such
judgments in time of war, Bush officials said. At most, courts have only the
power to review legal claims brought on behalf of detainees, such as whether
there is indeed a state of conflict between the United States and the detainee.
In a recent legal brief, Olson argued that the detention of people such as
Hamdi or Padilla as enemy combatants is "critical to gathering intelligence
in
connection with the overall war effort."
Nor is there any requirement that the executive branch spell out its criteria
for determining who qualifies as an enemy combatant, Olson argues.
"There won't be 10 rules that trigger this or 10 rules that end this,"
Olson
said in the interview. "There will be judgments and instincts and
evaluations
and implementations that have to be made by the executive that are probably
going to be different from day to day, depending on the circumstances."
The federal courts have yet to deliver a definitive judgment on the question. A
federal district judge in Virginia, Robert G. Doumar, was sharply critical of
the administration, insisting that Hamdi be permitted to consult an attorney.
But he was partially overruled by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th
Circuit, based in Richmond.
The 4th Circuit, however, said the administration's assertion that courts
should have absolutely no role in examining the facts leading to an enemy
combatant designation was "sweeping." A decision from that court is
pending as
to how much of a role a court could claim, if any. The matter could well have
to be settled in the Supreme Court.
Secret Surveillance
The administration scored a victory recently when the U.S. Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Court of Review ruled 3 to 0 that the USA Patriot Act, passed by
Congress shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist
attacks, gives the Justice
Department authority to break down what had come to be known as "the
wall"
separating criminal investigations from investigations of foreign agents.
The ruling endorsed the administration's view that law enforcement
goals should
be allowed to drive Justice Department requests for special eavesdropping and
search warrants that had been thought to be reserved for counterintelligence
operations. But the court went further, agreeing with the administration that
"the wall" itself had no real basis in pre-Patriot Act law. Instead,
the court
ruled, "the wall" was a product of internal Justice Department
guidelines that
were, in turn, based partly on erroneous interpretations of the law by some
courts.
There is no clear line between intelligence and crime in any case, the court
said, because any investigation of a spy ring could ultimately lead to charging
U.S. citizens with crimes such as espionage.
The decision overruled an earlier one by the lower-level Foreign Intelligence
Surveillance Court, in which seven judges sharply criticized past Justice
Department misstatements in applications for permission to do secret
surveillance.
Administration officials say that the ruling permits what is only sensible --
greater sharing of information between federal prosecutors and federal
counterintelligence officials.
Thanks to enforcement of
"the wall" by FBI lawyers, they note, pre-Sept. 11
permission to search Moussaoui's computer was not sought, a crucial missed
opportunity to prevent the attacks.
In practical terms, the ruling means that the attorney general would still have
to convince the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court that he has probable
cause to believe that a given subject of a wiretap or search is an agent of a
foreign terrorist group,
a standard that is not dissimilar to the one required
for warrants in ordinary criminal cases.
Yet civil libertarians say that targets of such investigations who end up being
ordered out of the country or prosecuted would lose a crucial right that they
would have in the ordinary criminal justice system -- the right to examine the
government's evidence justifying the initial warrant.
"So the government starts off using secret surveillance information not to
gather information upon which to make policy, but to imprison or deport an
individual, and then it never gives the individual a fair chance to see if the
surveillance was lawful," Martin said.

"Saturday Nov. 8th (2003) at about 10:40 PM (MST) a friend of mine was
riding a church bus from California to New Mexico. This was the night of the
eclipse and the Harmonic

When the bus was somewhere between Holbrook, AZ and the NM state line, a huge
flash of light lit up the sky. It appeared to be an incredibly intense beam that
came from the sky to the earth. It was bright enough that the Air Force

Back in 1975, when the UN declared Zionism a form of racism, I proposed that Israel resign from the UN. Here is what I now say:
The Jewish state of Israel is supposed to set an example to mankind. Therefore, Israel will not establish diplomatic relations with any tyrannical regime. To do so is to dignify tyrants and perpetuate their unjust rule over their people. It also lowers the moral standards of the Jewish people. The Torah makes distinctions between good and bad regimes, and warns against seeking relations with those that are wicked. To seek the recognition of Arab states only arouses their contempt for Israel; and to offer them "land for peace" not only makes them more contemptuous of Jews, but encourages them to make war. By not seeking relations with hostile Arab and Islamic states, Israel will cease to be diplomatically dependent on Washington.
Consistent with the preceding, Israel should quit the United Nations. The UN, which is dominated by Arab-Islamic and other dictatorships, has repeatedly passed resolutions condemning Israel. Here is a brief summary based on a study by Middle East analyst Gail Winston:
The Security Council: "condemned", "censured", "deplored", "strongly deplored", etc. Israel 49 times; the Arabs: Zero. The Security Council passed 131 Resolutions: 43 were neutral; 88 criticized or opposed or judged against Israel. Zero critical of any Arab state or entity such as the PLO (founded in 1964).

The principle of one nation/one vote in the General Assembly places democratic and despotic regimes on the same level. This is morally repugnant.

The UN is not only a sinkhole of corruption and ineptitude. It is intended by globalists to metamorphose into a world government. Such a government would constitute the greatest tyranny in human history. A world government would have a monopoly of military power with agents in every country to prevent any country from developing its own arms. Such a government would impose a stultifying uniformity on all nations, contrary to the Torah. God creates nations, which have a right to develop their own cultural identity, limited only by the Seven Noahide Laws of Universal Morality.
In announcing its resignation from the UN, Israel should call for the establishment of a new United Nations, one whose states are democracies that recognize the Seven Noahide Laws of Universal Morality, which a U.S. joint session of Congress explicitly incorporated in Public Law 102-14 (102 P.L. 14; 1991 H.J. Res. 104; 105 Stat. 44) establishing March 26, 1991 as "Education Day"!
If the corruption and failings of the UN were also publicized, I dare say that a majority of the American people would cheer Israel for taking the high moral ground and call upon the Bush Administration to leave the present UN and take the lead in establishing a new one.

Why is this Shabbat called Shabbat Parah? And coming so close to Purim we might ask if there is a connection, considering that the roots of the words, while rooted in different languages (Persian versus Hebrew) are similarly identical! Shabbat Parah is so named because we read about the Parah Adumah this week in the second Torah. The Red Heifer (parah adumah) is perplexing to so many.
False Lamb Sacrifice. Jesus the Everlasting Lamb of God
It is considered the ultimate "chok," or statute, because no rational explanation seems forthcoming. It is read in synagogues in the week before we declare the new moon of Nissan, the month of our Redemption from Egyptian bondage, the month we became a bonafide free people. The ashes of the Red Heifer are ashes of purification, so that all may offer their Passover Offering in a state of ritual purity.
Perhaps that is the origin of the English word "pure," a connection to the idea of the ashes of the PuhReh that had the power to render one spiritually cleansed. But the paradox of it all is that everyone who is involved in the process of the making of the ashes of the purifying red heifer become IMpure in that very same process! That is the ultimate quandary, a source of great puzzlement. But the reason I believe becomes clear when we look at it not from a Passover perspective, but rather from a Purim perspective. To those who say that it is impossible to do so on account that Passover was in the Torah while Purim was not, it can be answered that Purim was foreseen, and taught at Sinai as well.
Perpetual Purim
Just as the Oral Torah was given at Sinai, along with the Written Torah, so too the idea of G*d acting in an obvious miraculous way (Passover), was taught along with the idea that G*d can miraculously redeem us in a more hidden way (Purim).

Many people have a problem with the military aspect of Purim, of recounting the battles and the victories. Similarly, many people have problems with the idea of an army altogether, that somehow armies in and of themselves foster war. Surely, G*d would not permit the annihilation of the entire Jewish people in the Holocaust. Allied forces saw to that. Similary, G*d would not permit the destruction of Israel in 1948 or 1967 or 1973. Acting through the vessel of the man-made IDF, peace and security would come through the necessary precondition of armed might.
Among the seven Noahide laws given to humanity is the law to have police and judges. Anarchy and chaos flourish where there is no law. Peace can only be ensured through fair and firm rule. To ensure world peace in WW2, good people needed to do battle against evil dictators And *then* G*d would help.
In the Purim story Esther needed to risk her life to go "sans appointment" before the king. Only then could G*d help. Peace is a noble ideal, a truly noble end. But the Torah is teaching us that we have to be ready to fight for peace, if need be. Laying down arms in the face of evil for the sake of peace only emboldens evil in the world. It is not true peace that is achieved by such means, only surrender to fear. This is the meaning, then, of the paradox of the Parah Adumah, the Red Heifer. Just as the notion of "fighting for peace" seems contradictory and paradoxical, so too does the notion of "impurifying through purity," embodied in the ash making process of the red heifer, seem improbable. But that is the cosmic law of the universe. It is to teach us that while logic would dictate that one cannot fight for peace, and thus logically we should embrace pacifism, the Torah is giving us a higher logic. It is a logic of learning to be responsible for our own fate. Peace doesn't just happen. You have to work for it. And sometimes that even means fighting for it.
