During a swearing-in ceremony at the Western Wall in Jerusalem last Thursday, two soldiers held up a banner that sparked a wave of condemnation by soldiers and civilians alike. The slogan on the banner – "Shimshon [Brigade] does not evacuate Homesh" – referred to the prospect of the soldiers being ordered to evict settlers from an illegal outpost on the site of the former Homesh settlement.
Homesh was dismantled during the disengagement of 2005 but since then settlers have repeatedly returned to the site and erected makeshift homes, asserting their claim of a God-given right (The wannabe g-d of Talmud bavli who is certainly no GOD of Life) to live there, as well as throughout the rest of Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).

On the surface, the IDF's decision to jail the protesting pair suggests a refusal to bow to insubordination within the army's ranks. But set against the wider context of army collusion and co-operation with settler activists, it is hard to regard the verdict as ushering in a new dawn of tough love towards the settler movement. It is more likely that army chiefs disapproved of the troops' particularly public display of support for the settlers, rather than the underlying sentiment they expressed.
Given that the resettlement of Homesh has taken place under the benevolent gaze of the IDF, there is no doubt that the military authorities are still prepared to turn a blind eye to the disobedience of settlers and their supporters – so long it happens in the relative obscurity of the West Bank, rather than in the heart of Jerusalem in full view of both press and public.

I was part of the initial evacuation of Homesh during my army service, and our unit was split by many of the religious members of my brigade refusing to participate – a stance that the Shimshon soldiers this week threatened to repeat. However, instead of standing up to the mutiny, our commanders gave them the kid glove treatment. Their anxiety to avoid an internal confrontation overrode their adherence to army guidelines.

Likewise, every time I witness settlers assaulting and abusing Palestinians in the West Bank, soldiers are always on hand to provide armed cover for the attackers, refusing to intervene on the victims' behalf, and revealing the true level of support the army continues to offer to the settler camp. WASHINGTON (JTA) -- President Obama signed into a law a homeland security bill that includes funds for non-profits.
The Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act 2010, which was signed Wednesday, includes $19 million in funding for a grant program to improve security for nonprofits and religious institutions. The funds allocated for the Nonprofit Security Grant Program represent a $4 million increase from current levels.
Jewish groups, including Agudath Israel of America, Jewish Federations of North America (formerly United Jewish Communities) and the Orthodox Union, had lobbied for the funding increase and are lauding the bill's passage.
Jewish groups have received the plurality of the funds since the program was established in 2005.
The money is used typically to enhance security at communal buildings, including Jewish community centers, schools and synagogues, through video systems and barriers among other measures.

Four Arabs were lightly wounded on Friday morning when a brawl broke out in Jerusalem's Beit Safafa neighborhood between six Jewish right-wing (Hasidic Chabad anti-Christ) activists and local residents.

The incident occurred after the six activists, in their 50s, drove into the predominantly Arab neighborhood located near Gilo and began to quarrel with the locals over property ownership.
According to police, the six claimed that they were the rightful owners of a house in the neighborhood and then presented the locals with an eviction order, causing the argument to take a violent turn.
Three Arabs were lightly hurt, and then, as the quarrel escalated, one of the Jews drew a pistol and began to shoot at the locals who had gathered around the disputed property, wounding one of them lightly in the hand.
The four injured Arabs admitted themselves to a nearby hospital.
The Jewish activists reportedly fled Beit Safafa by car, later telling police that they had rushed away from the scene because they had felt threatened. They were tracked down by police and taken in for questioning.

Gilead Sciences stock went through the roof upon Rumsfeld appointment as Defense Secretary in 2001 and successfully lobbied for $1 billion in procurements. In what became known as the “Tamiflu Controversy” in 2005, Rumsfeld refused to sell his stock.
On October 16, 2009, Goldman Sachs announced that it had quadrupled its profits in the third quarter compared with last year, driven by strong returns on its own corporate investments.
Then on October 20, 2009, Gilead Sciences reported that quarterly profits rose 36 percent on increased royalties of Tamiflu as agreed with Roche at 10% of sales. What then is the connection between the two announcements?
Simple. Goldman Sachs owns stock with large shareholdings in Gilead Sciences and serves as Gilead’s financial advisor. At Goldman Sachs’ Annual Health Care Conference in June 2009, Gilead was a featured participator as it had been in previous Goldman Sachs Health Care Conferences. On July 29, 2009, the Pentagon announced that it was preparing to “make troops available to help the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) tackle a potential outbreak of the H1N1 virus this fall.” This “fall?” What did the Pentagon know that we didn’t know? On August 12, 2009, Secretary Robert Gates asked
Congress to grant him authority to post 400,000 military personnel throughout
the US in times of “emergency.”
On August 13, 2009, the National Guard began practice drills of mock takeovers of public schools in the event of an “H1N1 riot.” What kind of riot could arise out of a flu that has only killed 1,000 worldwide?
The CDC, in response to Obama’s
request in mid August 2009, finalized quarantine
regulations that provides for quarantining those “suspected” of having
swine flu or other illnesses listed in an executive order. This means that
Hussein Obama can quarantine *anyone* he determines to be a
political enemy infected.
These new regulations even permit “provisional” quarantine of persons not actually carrying any virus. In one section, the regulations empower the president to quarantine anyone who does not agree to be vaccinated.

PARIS — French judges ordered a far-right black comedian to pay 20,000 euros (30,000 dollars) Tuesday over an anti-Semitic stunt during a stage show in which he invited a notorious Holocaust denier onto stage.
The Paris court fined Dieudonne M'bala M'bala, a 43-year-old French stand up, 10,000 euros for his "public anti-Semitic insults" and told him to pay a further 10,000 in damages and legal fees to organisations that sued him.
He was prosecuted after he invited Robert Faurisson, an academic who has been convicted of Holocaust denial, onto stage during a Paris comedy show to receive a satirical award from an actor dressed as a Jewish deportee.
The comic admitted at the hearing that the show had been a "comedy bomb attack" but defended his right to free expression. Anti-racism and Jewish defence organisations welcomed the verdict.
Dieudonne, a former anti-racism campaigner whose father was Cameroonian, often courts controversy and this year tried to enter politics by standing for the European parliament as head of an "anti-Zionist" party.
In September 2007, Dieudonne was fined after he accused Jews of exploiting "memorial pornography" and attacked a "Zionist lobby which cultivates the idea of their unique suffering ... and has declared war on the black world."

KIEV, Dec. 12 (JTA) — In the run-up to Ukraine’s presidential re-vote, opposition candidate Viktor Yuschenko is taking steps to dispel fears among some Jews stemming from his political ties with Ukrainian nationalist groups.
On Dec. 9, Yuschenko made a public appearance in Kiev’s Central Synagogue to light Chanukah candles.
Some 400 Jews packed the shul, known here as the Brodsky Synagogue, welcoming Yuschenko and his wife Katerina, along with two of the couple’s five children with an ovation.
In an interview with JTA that evening, Yuschenko — who has been suffering from a mystery ailment that reports now indicate was the result of a deliberate poisoning — said that should he win the upcoming election, slated for Dec. 26, he will make relations with Israel a priority.
“Under my presidency, the relations between Ukraine and the State of Israel will take a turn for the better,” Yuschenko told JTA.
Yuschenko’s shul visit marked the rare appearance of a top Ukrainian political leader at a synagogue ceremony.
Some leaders of Ukraine’s Jewish community, who had previously preferred not to publicize their political preferences during the election standoff that followed the contested Nov. 21 presidential runoff, praised Yuschenko for his public show of support to the community.
“This visit demonstrated Yuschenko’s human and political position and his respect toward the Jewish community,” said Eduard Dolinsky, executive director of the umbrella United Jewish Community of Ukraine.
Yuschenko is widely expected to win in the re-vote later this month in which he is slated to again face Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich, who is supported by the central authorities in this nation of 48 million.
The results of the Nov. 21 runoff — in which Yuschenko finished second to Yanukovich — were invalidated by Ukraine’s Supreme Court earlier this month due to allegations of widespread electoral fraud.

Jews who greeted Yuschenko in the shul last week were not shy about whom they supported. Many wore orange ribbons and scarves — orange being the symbol of Yuschenko’s campaign — in addition to badges reading “Yes, Yuschenko!”
For his part, Yuschenko sported a kipah, which Jewish officials said was a first among top Ukrainian political leaders.
The Jewish community of Kiev said it sent Chanukah invitations to both presidential contenders, but only Yuschenko responded. Community leaders said they did not know if Yanukovich intended to visit the synagogue during the holiday.
In his short address at the synagogue, Yuschenko said that Chanukah “demonstrates that nothing can prevent people from moving to freedom.”
He also spoke highly of the Jewish people and Israel.
“This was the great Jewish people who saved Jewish traditions, culture and revived the Jewish state,” he said.
He noted similarities between Israel and his own country’s movement for independence — a movement that many here believe has taken a step forward with the pro-opposition protests dubbed the “Orange Revolution.”
“Many pages of the history of Ukraine and the State of Israel are very similar,” Yuschenko said.

Responding to a question from JTA about the prospects of the restitution of former Jewish communal property — one of the most pressing issues for Ukraine’s Jewish community — Yuschenko said he will be guided by justice in dealing with the issue.
“Justice should be the dominant question in the issue of restitution of Jewish property,” he said. “The property must be returned to the owner.

The History of Christianity in Ukraine dates back to the earliest centuries of the apostolic church. It has remained the dominant religion in the country since its acceptance in 988 by Vladimir the Great (Volodymyr the Great), who instated it as the state religion of Kievan Rus', a medieval East Slavic state.
Although separated into various denominations, most Ukrainian Christians share a common faith, a unique blend of Byzantine practices and Slavic mythology. These Eastern Christian traditions, in the form of both Eastern Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches, have been at various historic times closely aligned with Ukrainian national self-identity.
Currently, three major Ukrainian Orthodox Churches coexist, and often compete, in the country: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kiev Patriarchate, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate), and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. Additionally, a significant body of Christians belong to the Eastern Rite Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, and a smaller number in the Ruthenian Catholic Church. While Western Christian traditions such as Roman Catholicism and Protestantism have had a limited presence on the territory of Ukraine since at least the sixteenth century, worshipers of these traditions remain a relatively small minority in today's Ukraine.

The U.N. panel on Tuesday said Israel was involved in the illegal export and sale of diamonds from the Ivory Coast. It also said the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon, Guinea and Liberia were not enforcing a U.N. embargo on buying the diamonds mined in the West African nation.
A blood diamond, or conflict stone, refers to a diamond mined in a war zone and sold to finance an insurgency or warlord, usually in Africa. Civil wars in Angola, Sierra Leone and Liberia were financed largely by an underground diamond trade.
"Israel has never dealt in diamond trade with the Ivory Coast," Israel's Diamond Controller Shmuel Mordechai said in a statement. "We are shocked by these false accusations and completely refute them."

Clinton fell Wednesday afternoon at the State Department on her way to the White House and was taken to George Washington University Hospital. She was treated and released. She will have surgery to repair her elbow in coming weeks.

"Secretary Clinton appreciates the professionalism and kindness she received from the medical team who treated her this evening and looks forward to resuming her full schedule soon," said department spokeswoman Cheryl Mills.
Philip Crowley, an assistant secretary of state, said Obama was one of the first people to call Clinton Wednesday night.
Clinton was at home "resting comfortably, or uncomfortably. She is working from home. She is already taking some calls, and I'm sure starting to learn the limits of movement -- how well you can text with one arm in a sling," Crowley said.
