The Region: The notable shift in the Obama administration

To say that US President Barack Obama hates, seeks to destroy and/or is pressuring Israel is a staple of the Internet rumor mill. A large portion of the far right would like to believe it. But it isn't true.

Looking beyond the president's tone, miscomprehension of regional realities and all-too-apparent eagerness to please the world, the latest developments have made this so clear that it is time for people to adjust their view. The result is not an ideal relationship but one comparable to that which usually existed under his predecessors. It is a situation not directly dangerous to Israel.

Indirect problems are another matter but here Israel is in the same boat as everyone else who wants strong, sane American leadership in the region and, indeed, US interests themselves. This outcome, however, was far from inevitable.

FROM HIS political background, Obama learned three negative attitudes toward Israel. If things had gone otherwise, these might have been expressed as major policies during his presidency, the disaster that many foresaw and some still misperceive.

• Indoctrinated by the far left into the Third World, "anti-imperialist" narrative, Obama disliked Israel and saw it as evil, taught by such people as Rashid Khalidi, an Edward Said acolyte and Palestinian propagandist, and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, an outright anti-Semite.

• He thought Israel was too strong. Israel was seen as so powerful that it could afford to make huge concessions without risk. And Israel was faulted for the peace process not succeeding.

He thought Israel was too weak. It needed peace quickly or might collapse and thus had to be forced to make huge concessions for its own good.

Obama only held the last of these three objectively hostile views after the inauguration, but it was dissipated by the first half-year or so of his experience. The other two were already dropped.

So why did Obama shift his stance? During the campaign he came to learn that Israel's supporters were active, energetic and would fight back even when almost no one else would confront him. In addition, the fact that he could gain Jewish support gave him an added incentive to pull back. Put simply, being anti-Israel was a political liability. Obama knew it and shifted accordingly.

Since the political costs of an anti-Israel stance are continuous, he needed to follow this change after he became president as well. Moreover, he needed Congress, which after a brief period of silence, intimidated by Obama's victory and apparent popularity, has returned to its usual pro-Israel stance.

In addition, though, he began to discover that his views didn't work in the real world. His attempt to pressure Israel failed, thanks to the Israeli government. A key factor here was the tough, superb maneuvering of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu ably supported by President Shimon Peres and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

The government could not possibly have handled Obama better. At the same time, the obvious fragility of the current coalition proved another persuasive factor that made Obama pull back. I shudder to think what would have happened if Tzipi Livni had been prime minister.

IN ADDITION, as always, intransigence on the Arab and Palestinian side was so extreme that even the Obama administration couldn't ignore it. Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas was absolutely uncooperative with Obama, throwing away an incredible strategic opportunity. Obama thought Arab states would fall in line behind him - especially Egypt and Saudi Arabia - but they refused to help. It is said that his meeting with the Saudi king, who went into an anti-Israel diatribe, was a particular shock. Syria and Iran also showed they were not so open to friendly engagement.

All these factors have helped force a rethinking process on Obama and his administration.

To this day, the US government under Obama has not taken a single material step against Israel and no such development seems to be on the horizon either.

While there are many criticisms that can be made of Obama's Middle East policy, it has swung in a more pro-Israel direction while still maintaining the kind of "evenhanded" balance frequently seen in his predecessors.

The latest examples include:

• A continuation of joint US-Israel military exercises, consultations over Iran, arms sales and the use of Israeli equipment by the US military.

• A policy change on the idea of a settlement construction. First, the administration shifted to accepting the idea of reciprocal Arab concessions, now Obama speaks of "restraining" rather than freezing construction, trying to negotiate some compromise.

• A tough stand by the administration in denouncing the Goldstone report, which was designed to bash Israel over the Gaza war, and on blocking its use to sanction the Jewish state.

• A specific mention the need for a Jewish State of Israel by Obama in his UN address last week, reflecting one of the Israeli government's most important demands, which is rejected by the Palestinian Authority.

• An emphasis on the need for talks without preconditions, thus specifically rejecting the Palestinian demand (which originated with him) of a settlement freeze before negotiations could restart.

• Seeking Arab overtures toward Israel and vice versa, in contrast to his original stance.

• Praising the Israeli government for its flexibility and taking up the theme of raising Palestinian living standards.

• Not echoing the Arab demand that Israel join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.

• Maintaining demands for changes in Damascus's behavior before further engagement can proceed.

Sometimes, relatively positive formulations are misinterpreted by some the opposite way. For example, when Obama said at the UN that he considered post-1967 Israeli settlements to be illegal, he was only echoing long-standing US practice. He was also saying that Israel's existence should not be questioned and by not mentioning settlement construction, Obama was actually backtracking on that issue. His statement did not imply that Israel must return to 1967 borders.

Of course, the administration policy does not comprehend things like the impossibility of comprehensive peace due to Palestinian obduracy, the need to bring down the Hamas government in Gaza for progress on peace or stability, and other points required for an effective US policy. But comparing it to positions under the last half-dozen US presidents shows less change than looking at rhetoric alone would seem to indicate.

Can it change again? Definitely, but in which direction? If Obama is determined to push the peace process forward, the Palestinian leadership will teach him what they taught his predecessors: that it is the real roadblock. Arab states will frustrate him because they won't lift a finger to help.

Again, there are many criticisms that can be made of the Obama administration, especially with regards to Iran. On these issues, the administration might not learn its lessons since Obama's clear reluctance to identify and confront the radicals could well push it into a dangerous passivity. That, not appeasement, is the biggest threat.

In the meantime, the Obama administration has shifted on bilateral relations with Israel and on its concept of a peace process from a position of relative hostility to the historic US policy default stance.

Question: What about those who hold "that person" is messiah?

People who hold that he is not and was not any part of a divinity, but still holds that he was a messiah.

Answer: It is the opinion of Rabbi Schwartz that a person who believes that "that man" was a messiah is not transgressing any prohibition. However the issue is as follows: someone who believes that "that man" was a messiah seems to be only partly disassociating himself from full christianity, and there is a problem of what is meant by the term "messiah". Is the messiah a "divine messenger" to "save" the world. Now when I say "a divine messenger" I mean someone - otherwise normal human being - sent by "the divinity" as a messenger. It seems that some people mean "a person with divine attributes"!

An issue which could be seen as semantic becomes of major consequence.

The decision of Rabbi Schwartz is therefore that in the beis din over which he presides he will not accept declarations of people with christian background if they think that "that man" was a messiah. Here's how Israel would destroy Iran's nuclear program

Israeli government ministers and Knesset members who will help make the decision about whether to attack Iran's nuclear facilities do not have to wait any longer for a preparatory briefing by the Israel Air Force.

They can read about all the possible scenarios for a strike on Iran, and about the potential risks and chances of success, in a study by Abdullah Toukan and Anthony Cordesman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Never before has such an open, detailed and thorough study of Israel's offensive options been published. The authors of the 114-page study meticulously gathered all available data on Israel's military capabilities and its nuclear program, and on Iran's nuclear developments and aerial defenses, as well as both countries' missile inventory.

After analyzing all the possibilities for an attack on Iran, Toukan and Cordesman conclude: "A military strike by Israel against Iranian nuclear facilities is possible ... [but] would be complex and high-risk and would lack any assurances that the overall mission will have a high success rate."

The first problem the authors point to is intelligence, or more precisely, the lack of it. "It is not known whether Iran has some secret facilities where it is conducting uranium enrichment," they write. If facilities unknown to Western intelligence agencies do exist, Iran's uranium-enrichment program could continue to develop in secret there, while Israel attacks the known sites - and the strike's gains would thus be lost. In general, the authors state, attacking Iran is justified only if it will put an end to Iran's nuclear program or halt it for several years. That objective is very difficult to attain.

Intelligence agencies are also divided on the critical question of when Iran will deliver a nuclear weapon. Whereas Israeli intelligence maintains it will have the bomb between 2009 and 2012, the U.S. intelligence community estimates it will not happen before 2013. If the Israeli intelligence assessment is accurate, the window for a military strike is rapidly closing. It is clear to everyone that no one will dare attack Iran once it possesses nuclear weapons.

Since Iran has dozens of nuclear facilities dispersed throughout its large territory, and since it is impossible to attack all of them, Toukan and Cordesman investigated the option of hitting only three, which "constitute the core of the nuclear fuel cycle that Iran needs to produce nuclear weapons grade fissile material."

Destroying these three sites ought to stall the Iranian nuclear program for several years. The three are: the nuclear research center in Isfahan, the uranium-enrichment facility in Natanz, and the heavy water plant, intended for future plutonium production, in Arak. It is doubtful whether Israel would embark on an offensive with such major ramifications just to strike a small number of facilities, when it is not at all clear that this will stop Iran's nuclearization for a significant length of time.

The study analyzes three possible flight routes and concludes that the optimal and most likely one is the northern one that passes along the Syria-Turkey border, cuts across the northeastern edge of Iraq and leads into Iran. The central route passes over Jordan and is shorter, but would not be chosen for fear of political trouble with the Jordanians. Using the southern route, which passes over Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, might likewise lead to political entanglements.

To prevent the aircraft being detected en route to Iran, the IAF would use advanced technology to invade and scramble communication networks and radar devices in the countries over which the F-15s and F-16s fly, so even though dozens of planes would pass through the countries' airspace, they will not be detected. According to the authors, the IAF used this technology in the raid on the Syrian nuclear reactor in Dayr az-Zawr, in September 2007. A hacker system was installed on two Gulfstream G550 aircraft that the IAF bought in recent years.

A strike mission on the three nuclear facilities would require no fewer than 90 combat aircraft, including all 25 F-15Es in the IAF inventory and another 65 F-16I/Cs. On top of that, all the IAF's refueling planes will have to be airborne: 5 KC-130Hs and 4 B-707s. The combat aircraft will have to be refueled both en route to and on the way back from Iran. The IAF will have a hard time locating an area above which the tankers can cruise without being detected by the Syrians or the Turks.

One of the toughest operational problems to resolve is the fact that the facility at Natanz is buried deep underground. Part of it, the fuel-enrichment plant, reaches a depth of 8 meters, and is protected by a 2.5-meter-thick concrete wall, which is in turn protected by another concrete wall. By mid-2004 the Iranians had fortified their defense of the other part of the facility, where the centrifuges are housed. They buried it 25 meters underground and built a roof over it made of reinforced concrete several meters thick.

The Iranians use the centrifuges to enrich uranium, which is required in order to produce a nuclear bomb. There are already 6,000 centrifuges at the Natanz facility; the Iranians plan to install a total of 50,000, which could be used to produce 500 kilos of weapons-grade uranium annually. Building a nuclear bomb takes 15-20 kilograms of enriched uranium. That means that the Natanz facility will be able to supply enough fissile material for 25-30 nuclear weapons per year.

Because the Natanz facility is so important, the Iranians have gone to great lengths to protect it. To contend with the serious defensive measures they have taken, the IAF will use two types of U.S.-made smart bombs. According to reports in the foreign media, 600 of these bombs - nicknamed "bunker busters" - have been sold to Israel. One is called GBU-27, it weighs about 900 kilos and it can penetrate a 2.4-meter layer of concrete. The other is called GBU-28 and weighs 2,268 kilos; this monster can penetrate 6 meters of concrete and another layer of earth 30 meters deep. But for these bombs to penetrate ultra-protected Iranian facilities, IAF pilots will have to strike the targets with absolute accuracy and at an optimal angle.

Additional challenges

But the challenges facing the IAF do not end there. Iran has built a dense aerial-defense system that will make it hard for Israeli planes to reach their targets unscathed. Among other things, (Noooooooooooo)  the Iranians have deployed batteries of Hawk, SA-5 and SA-2 surface-to-air missiles, plus they have SA-7, SA-15, Rapier, Crotale and Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. Furthermore, 1,700 anti-aircraft guns protect the nuclear facilities - not to mention the 158 combat aircraft that might take part in defending Iran's skies. Most of those planes are outdated, but they may be scrambled to intercept the IAF, which will thus have to use part of its strike force to deal with the situation.

However, all these obstacles are nothing compared to the S-300V (SA-12 Giant) anti-aircraft defense system, which various reports say Russia may have secretly supplied to Iran recently. If the Iranians indeed have this defense system, all of the IAF's calculations, and all of the considerations for and against a strike, will have to be overhauled. The Russian system is so sophisticated and tamper-proof that the aircraft attrition rates could reach 20-30 percent: In other words, out of a strike force of 90 aircraft, 20 to 25 would be downed. This, the authors say, is "a loss Israel would hardly accept in paying."

If Israel also decides to attack the famous reactor in Bushehr, an ecological disaster and mass deaths will result. The contamination released into the air in the form of radionuclides would spread over a large area, and thousands of Iranians ( and worthy earthlings)  who live nearby would be killed immediately; in addition, possibly hundreds of thousands would subsequently die of cancer. Because northerly winds blow in the area throughout most of the year, the authors conclude that, "most definitely Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE will be heavily affected by the radionuclides."

The difficulty involved in an IAF strike would become a moot point if ballistic missiles wind up being used instead of combat aircraft. The Iranians cannot defend against ballistic missiles. The study lays bare Israel's missile program and points to three missile versions it has developed: Jericho I, II and III. The Jericho I has a 500-kilometer range, a 450-kilogram warhead, and can carry a 20-kiloton nuclear weapon. Jericho II has a 1,500-kilometer range, and entered service in 1990. It can carry a 1-megaton nuclear warhead. Jericho III is an intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of 4,800-6,500 kilometers, and can carry a multi-megaton nuclear warhead. The study says the latter was expected to enter service in 2008.

It is doubtful the Jerichos' accuracy can be relied on, and that all of them will hit those critical spots with precision.

The study also analyzes the possible Iranian response to an Israeli strike. In all likelihood the result would be to spur Iranians to continue and even accelerate their nuclear program, to create reliable deterrence in the face of an aggressive Israel. Iran would also withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which until now has enabled its nuclear program to be monitored, to a certain degree, through inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency. An Israeli strike would immediately put a stop to the international community's attempts to pressure Iran into suspending development of nuclear weapons.

Iran would also, almost certainly, retaliate against Israel directly. It might attack targets here with Shahab-3 ballistic missiles, whose range covers all of Israel. A few might even be equipped with chemical warheads.

Hezbollah launched 4,000 rockets from South Lebanon during the Second Lebanon War, and their effect on northern Israel has not been forgotten: Life was nearly paralyzed for a whole month. Since then the Lebanese organization's stockpile was replenished and enhanced, and it now has some 40,000 rockets. Israel does not have a response to those rockets. The rocket defense systems now being developed (Iron Dome and Magic Wand) are still far from completion, and even after they become operational, it is doubtful they will prove effective against thousands of rockets launched at Israel.

An Israeli strike on Iran would also sow instability in the Middle East. The Iranians would make use of the Shi'ites in Iraq, support Taliban fighters and improve their combat capabilities in Afghanistan. They also might attack American interests in the region, especially in countries that host U.S. military forces, such as Qatar and Bahrain.

The Iranians would probably also attempt to disrupt the flow of oil to the West from the Persian Gulf region. Since the United States would be perceived as having given Israel a green light to attack Iran, American relations with allies in the Arab world could suffer greatly. Toukan and Cordesman believe, however, that Iran's ally Syria would refrain from intervening if Israel strikes Iran's nuclear facilities.

Regarding a possible time frame for an Israeli strike, the authors cited factors that could speed up the decision in this matter. By 2010 Iran could pose a serious threat to its neighbors and Israel, because it would have enough nuclear weapons to deter the latter and the United States from attacking it. Iran's inventory of effective ballistic missiles capable of carrying nonconventional warheads could also be an incentive. The fear that the country will procure the Russian S-300V aerial-defense system (if it has not done so already) might also serve as an incentive for a preemptive strike.

So what should Israeli policy makers conclude from this American study? That an IAF strike on Iran would be complicated and problematic, and that the chance of it succeeding is not great. That they must weigh all of the far-reaching ramifications that an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities would have, and that they must not be fooled by promises, should any be made, by Israel Defense Forces officers who present the attack plan as having good odds for success.

One of the conclusions from Toukan and Cordesman's study is that it is questionable whether Israel has the military capability to destroy Iran's nuclear program, or even to delay it for several years. Therefore, if the diplomatic contacts the Obama administration is initiating with Iran prove useless, and if in the wake of their expected failure the American president does not decide to attack Iran, it is likely that Iran will possess nuclear weapons in a relatively short time. It seems, therefore, that policy makers in Jerusalem should begin preparing, mentally and operationally, for a situation in which Iran is a nuclear power with a strike capability against Israel.

It is time to stop waving around the scarecrow of an existential threat and refrain from making belligerent statements, which sometimes create a dangerous dynamic of escalation. And if the statements are superfluous and harmful - then this is doubly true for a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Of course, none of this contradicts the possibility of taking covert action to hamper the Iranians' program and supply routes. When the IAF destroyed the Osirak reactor in Baghdad in 1981, the "Begin doctrine" came into being, which holds that Israel will not let any hostile country in the region acquire nuclear weapons. The problem is that what could be accomplished in Iraq more than two decades ago is no longer possible today under the present circumstances in Iran.

The continual harping on the Iranian threat stems from domestic Israeli politics and a desire to increase investment in the security realm, but the ramifications of this are dangerous when you analyze expected developments in Iran's ballistics: It is impossible for Israel to ignore Iran's capacity to hit it, and Jerusalem must shape a policy that will neutralize that threat.

Run for the hills and cry for the mountains to fall upon you, type scenario

In another year, or three years from now, when the Iranians possess nuclear weapons, the rules of the strategic game in the region will be completely altered. Israel must reach that moment with a fully formulated and clear policy in hand, enabling it to successfully confront a potential nuclear threat, even when it is likely that the other side has no intention of carrying it out. The key, of course, is deterrence. Only a clear and credible signal to the Iranians, indicating the terrible price they will pay for attempting a nuclear strike against Israel, will prevent them from using their missiles. The Iranians have no logical reason to bring about the total destruction of their big cities, as could happen if Israel uses the means of deterrence at its disposal. Neither the satisfaction of killing Zionist infidels, nor, certainly, the promotion of Palestinian interests would justify that price. Israeli deterrence in the face of an Iranian nuclear threat has a good chance of succeeding precisely because the Iranians have no incentive to deal a mortal blow to Israel.

Therefore, all the declarations about developing the operational capability of IAF aircraft so they can attack the nuclear facilities in Iran, and the empty promises about the ability of the Arrow missile defense system to contend effectively with the Shahab-3, not only do not help bolster Israel's power of deterrence, but actually undermine the process of building it and making it credible in Iranian eyes.

The time has come to adopt new ways of thinking. No more fiery declarations and empty threats, but rather a carefully weighed policy grounded in sound strategy. Ultimately, in an era of a multi-nuclear Middle East, all sides will have a clear interest to lower tension and not to increase it.

Poll: U.S. Jews back Iran strike, denominations split on Obama

WASHINGTON (JTA) -- A new survey shows that a majority of American Jews would support a U.S. military strike on Iran to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons -- a significant increase from a year ago.

Fifty-six percent of American Jews would support the “United States taking military action against Iran to prevent it from developing nuclear weapons,” according to the American Jewish Committee's 2009 Annual Survey of Jewish Opinion. That's an increase of 14 percentage points from the AJC survey taken in the fall of 2008. In addition, 66.6 percent of those surveyed said they would back an Israeli strike on Iran.

The survey of 800 self-identifying Jewish respondents, interviewed between Aug. 30 and Sept. 17, comes as a wide swath of Jewish organizations are rallying support in the Jewish community and elsewhere for increased economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran -- in particular tough sanctions targeting Iran's importation and production of refined petroleum. With a margin of error of plus or minus three percent, the poll would appear to undercut the claims of some who charge that Jewish organizations are out of step with the Jewish public in pushing for pressure on Iran.

The AJC's executive director, David Harris, speculated that there were two possible reasons for the shift in opinion on Iran. More American Jews may now be “aware of the seriousness and growing nature of the threat,” he said, or they might have “more confidence” in the Obama administration to handle a confrontation with Iran than they did with the Bush administration -- which many believed had not properly handled the Iraq war.

The 21-question survey did not ask specifcally about opinion on Iranian sanctions; Harris said time and budgetary constraints prevented the organization from using all the questions it would have liked to ask.

In addition to the Iran results, Harris said the other interesting part of the poll was that, "despite the attempts by some ideologically motivated groups” to place all Jews solidly in liberal or conservative camps, "this survey reinforces what we have found – American Jews are very close to the center.”

An assortment of results bear that out, at least on some issues. For instance, 49 percent of those surveyed favor the establishment of a Palestinian state, with 41 percent opposed.

Sixty percent favor the dismantlement of some or all of the Jewish settlements in the West Bank, compared to 37 percent who say none; on the other hand, 58 percent say Israel should not be “willing to compromise on the status of Jerusalem as a united city under Israeli jurisdiction,” with just 37 percent in favor.

American Jews are extremely skeptical of Arab intentions in the Middle East. Asked whether they agreed or disagreed that "the goal of the Arabs is not the return of occupied territories but rather the destruction of Israel,” 75 percent said yes and just 19 percent said no. But that is down from 82 percent who agreed two years ago, the last time the AJC asked the question.

Hadar Susskind, the director of policy and strategy at J Street -- a Jewish lobbying group that is one of the few Jewish organizations that does not support sanctions on Iran right now and has backed the Obama administration's call for a halt to new settlement construction -- argued that the numbers demonstrate J Street's argument that there is a “diversity” of opinion in the Jewish community.

With a significant minority supporting a settlement freeze and opposing a military strike on Iran, the poll shows there is no “mythical one opinion” on controversial matters, Susskind said.

But the national director of the Anti-Defamation League, Abraham Foxman, said the results bolster the argument that the establishment groups with a more centrist line on foreign affairs represent the “more constant view” of the Jewish community. American Jews feel similarly to Israelis on the prospects of peace, he said -- that while “the Arabs haven't really changed their attitudes,” it's still worthwhile to try for peace.

Of particular note, Foxman said, were results that show Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with a 59 percent approval rating for his handling of U.S.-Israel relations. President Obama was slightly lower at 54 percent, with 32 percent who disapprove.

Results on most questions do not differ significantly due to age, with a spread generally within 5-10 points on most questions when broken down into demographic groups of under 40, 40-59, and 60-plus.

“We ourselves were struck by that finding,” said Harris, noting discussion in the Jewish community that younger Jews may be more liberal than older Jews.

Instead, religious denomination was the true variable, particularly on evaluations of President Obama.

Just 14 percent of Orthodox respondents said they approved of the Obama administration's handling of U.S.-Israel relations, compared to 54 and 59 percent for Conservative and Reform Jews, respectively. And 13 percent said they approved of the president's handling of the Iran nuclear issue, with 44 percent of Conservative Jews and 54 percent of Reform Jews feeling positively about the president. On a potential strike against Iran, however, there is general agreement among denominations in favor, ranging from 61 percent of Orthodox to 53 percent of Reform.

The Orthodox Union's director of public affairs, Nathan Diament, said the numbers were not a surprise.

“Surveys over the years, including AJC's, have consistently shown that American Orthodox Jews are those with the closest affinity to Israel,” Diament said. “Thus, if surveys in Israel have shown that Israelis' attitudes regarding President Obama's policies toward Israel are very critical, it is sensible that” American Orthodox Jews “echo the same effect.”

Matt Brooks, the Republican Jewish Coalition's executive director, said that the 54 percent approval for Obama on the handling of U.S.-Israel relations compared to the 78 percent of the Jewish vote he received last November demonstrates that there are real problems for Obama in the Jewish community. He noted that some Democrats have been critical of the Obama administration's public calls for a settlement freeze.

But the CEO of the National Jewish Democratic Council, Ira Forman, said it was notable that Obama was still above 50 percent approval on the issue, despite the continuous carping from many that the president is treating Israel badly. The numbers demonstrate that the argument of Obama being unfriendly to Israel “is not convincing,” he said, also noting that 81 percent said that relations between Israel and the United States are very or somewhat positive.

There was one question on which there was almost complete unanimity in the poll. Asked whether the Palestinians should be required to recognize Israel as a Jewish state in a final peace agreement, 94 percent said yes.

Iran's 'nuclear card' game

After reading "Iran's North Korean Model" in The Jerusalem Post last week, I felt the need to expand on it. (Me too) The editorial is absolutely correct in predicting the "enormous peril" the world faces by allowing Iran to continue on its path of nuclear proliferation. However, the Iranian leaders' decision to defy the world holds much greater peril to them than it did for North Korea, so it would be difficult to use the latter as a model. Take for example the most significant war of the past decade: Iraq. Yes, America currently has its hands tied with Afghanistan and Iraq, and this fact encourages Iranian defiance, especially if we assume that impotence is now the defining characteristic of American power.

But have we already forgotten that America invaded Iraq on the very pretext that it had the same capabilities as North Korea? Have we forgotten that prior to that, the invasion of Afghanistan was a result of the American decision to combat international terror? No.

Have we forgotten the Five Israeli's of Mossad, filming the destruction of the WTC, while videoing and cheering and High Fiving each other while 3000 US Citizen's were murdered? Have we forgotten the USS LIberty? No.

Unlike North Korea, Iran has everything to fear from America, considering that it has already involved itself in the region militarily for less. The American-led invasion of Iraq was based on the belief (Lies of ITSREALLYHELL)  that Saddam Hussein was holding weapons of mass destruction. Beyond that, however, the United States was solidifying a tactical position against Iran, the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism.

NO MATTER which strategy you choose to believe dictated American foreign policy at that time, both point directly at Iran. Indeed, fostering instability in Iraq, supporting global terrorism, and threatening America's closest ally on a daily basis, Iran represents a strategic threat to American regional interests (not to mention that Iran is OPEC's second-largest producer and exporter of oil). But Iran has greater ambitions than politicide, which would follow the launching of a nuclear warhead at Israel.

Don't forget that ITSREALLYHELL wants the seven nations of the Caanites, from the nile to the Euphrates, because their Babylonian prophets of Baa'l says their g-d wannabe, who has the kingdoms of the earth to give them, said so.

Religious fanaticism does not necessarily equal stupidity. Even though Barak Obama clings to his hopes of dialogue, he will soon find that the Iranian regime is not interested in befriending a superpower - but rather in becoming one.

This is actually nothing new. We haven't seen a real policy change in Iran vis-à-vis America in the past 30 years. Iran defied America outright with the kidnapping of US officials after the revolution in 1979, and articulated the intention of developing a nuclear program long before the Iraq War. Although I don't think the ayatollahs are willing to sacrifice their power for the sake of ideology, achieving regional dominance definitely plays a large part in the Iranian national agenda.

"The nuclear playing card," if it doesn't start a regional arms race, would allow Iran to fill a power vacuum in the region and fuel the fires of Islamist movements presently gaining steam in the Arab world. Ahmadinejad has already begun filling the spot from which Saddam was removed as leader of the country seen as best able to check Israeli regional hegemony.

One might argue that Arabs and Persians are not natural allies - neither are Sunnis and Shi'ites. So why is Iran championing the Palestinian cause while the 8% Sunni minority within its own predominantly Shi'ite borders remains oppressed? Because doing so is sure to garner support and embolden extreme elements.

Paradoxically however, this "common cause" will not help Arab regional dictators if Iran's plan to encourage Islamism comes to fruition. If extreme groups were to instigate or hijack a revolution (like the clerics did in 1979) within Egypt, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan or Saudi Arabia, the world order would experience a cataclysmic shift.

That is exactly what the Choose hope for, for they already have Iraq in their control as well as Turkey

IF IRAN has learned anything from North Korea's success over the past 16 years, it is the power inherent in the nuclear card. Iran now has the opportunity to assume a leading role in the region; it only lacks the "respect" that a nuclear weapon would afford it.

If the West were to allow Iran this advantage, it would see the unprecedented rise of a regional hegemony that Russia and China would jump to ally themselves with, in addition to the empowerment of Islamist groups and the fall of what we consider "friendly regimes" or "benign dictators."

These types of changes tend to accompany wars, and this is the reason, even more than the possibility of an ideologically driven nuclear strike, that Iran's nuclear program places everyone in enormous peril.

British intelligence believes Iran has resumed work on nuclear warhead

British intelligence has disputed an American assessment that Iran has not resumed work building a warhead for a nuclear weapon

The Financial Times and New York Times have separately reported that Western and Israeli intelligence agencies are in the throes of a dispute over the exact nature of Iran's work to build a functioning atom bomb.

Following the discovery of a secret plant outside the holy city of Qom, US intelligence hopes that it has made a breakthrough in finding out how much covert work Iran is undertaking.

The New York Times quoted a US official claiming Qom "was the big one" but he added Iran was a big country.

British officials told the Financial Times that Iran resumed work on a nuclear warhead design in "late 2004 or early 2005." The US assessment is that worked stopped after an order was handed down by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in 2003 and there is no conclusive evidence that it has restarted.

One former US official acknowledged there were deep differences between international intelligence agencies. "It's often the tradecraft that gets us bollixed up," said Rolf Mowatt-Larssen. "It comes down to interpreting the same data in different ways."

The shadow of faulty assessments used to pave the way to the Iraq war hangs over intelligence agencies attempts to reach conclusions about Iran.

MILLIONS MURDERED, Millions more on the way

"We'd let the country down, and we wanted to make sure it would never happen again," said Thomas Fingar, who led the State Department's intelligence bureau, which disputed the weapons of mass distruction assessment before the Iraq war. "Now, it's much more of a transparent tussle of ideas."

While the American view is that the design work has still not resumed but Germany, Israel and Britain are more hawkish.

A session of the Beis Din of the Sanhedrin heard the petition of Mr. Aryeh King, head of the Land Redemption Fund in the Land of Israel. In his appeal to the court, he asked that the Beis Din rule on the question of whether it is permissible for a Jew to sell or lease an apartment or other realty asset to a non-Jew.

The question came up in relation to the transfer of ownership, the sale, lease, transfer of control and possession of real estate from Jews to non-Jews in Jerusalem neighborhoods, in the satellite cities around Jerusalem, and throughout the country. {whether it is done by individual Jews or whether by government master plans which have been frozen in the meantime, or whether by benign neglect by the authorities in turning a blind eye to illegal Arab land grabs].

This has been done in Nazareth Illit, in Carmiel, Acre, Jaffa, Ramle, Lod, even around Jerusalem. Likewise Arabs have taken possession and criminally seized lands that do not belong to them, even by the use of threats and damage to the persons and property of private individuals. Thus hundreds of thousands of dunams of land in the Negev and Galilee have already been taken over and used to build tens of thousands of illegal houses. This nationalistic momentum is receiving economic, political, and moral support from outside elements hostile to the Jewish (mark of Cain, woe is them)  people and their state and is even , regrettably, getting support either explicitly or by being deliberately ignored by Hellenist elements of Jewish origin who are influential in the government establishment and the courts. Some of them consequently enjoy outstanding benefits in their relations with foreign agencies. Transactions which involves transferring Jewish property to Arabs must be seen as nationalistic transactions par excellence, as a stage in the expulsion of the people of Israel from their land,. The process of dispossessing the Jewish people of its land happens in the following way:

First Stage

In the first stage, Arabs buy or rent single apartments in Jewish neighborhoods by offering a very high payment to the owner, who is attracted by the higher price than what Jews are willing to pay. The source of the higher payments are, among others:

Discrimination in the collection of taxes, since the tax authorities are apprehensive about collecting a true tax (income tax, VAT, National Insurance, city taxes, etc., as Police Commander Alec Ron testified after the last riots) from the Arab sector for fear of a violent uprising. As a result, the Arab sector has more available money than the Jewish sector.

“The Land of Israel is acquired with suffering” (tractate Brachot 5,A). Of the land of Israel it is written, “As a man chastises his son, so does the Lord your G-d chastise you”, and afterwards it is written “Because the Lord your G-d is bringing you to a good land”.

Therefore, even if in the difficult trials of these times, a Jew loses much money because he is not persuaded to sell his assets to a non-Jew, then he has withstood the test and the Almighty will recompense his loss.

As the national struggle intensifies between Israel and Ishmael and Esau - under whatever name they go - trade in land has taken on special significance in the State of Israel. Under these circumstances, one must be very scrupulous in real estate transactions with non-Jews since the non-Jew is not negotiating for himself only but rather on behalf of his nation/religion. Therefore any Jews who rents or sells an apartment or land to a non-Jew in a place where Jews live, such as an apartment building, a single house where there is a Jewish neighbor, a city, or agricultural zone, is abetting the persecution of his fellow Jews who remain there. And then he is guilty of the serious crimes of handing over a Jew to the enemy, persecuting an innocent person, and treason.

1. It is a special mitzvah to redeem the lands of the holy Land as stated in the Netziv, Levit. 25:24. And this mitzvah sometimes even takes precedence over observing the Sabbath (as explained by the Vilna Gaon on the Shulhan Aruch, Hoshenmishpat 194:a).

1. Regarding the sale/lease of land to a non-Jew, one must consult the following attached sources, some of which we have appended for convenience (explanations have been added in the parentheses).

A) The Rambam's opinion is that since [today] we do not allow him [= a non-Jew] to live in the land with the status of a ger toshav [a non-Jew who has formally renounced idolatry], his living in the land is not permitted even if in practice he observes the Seven Noachide Laws; if he has not specifically accepted them in recognition of the G-d of Israel, we do not know how strictly these non-Jews keep them and we are not expert in their customs.

In any case, there is no prohibition against their living here, because there is no concern that they might cause others to sin, etc… Even the Ravad does not allow non-Jews to reside in Israel unless he accepts the G-d of Israel (Denies Jesus is Christ and worships after their god wannabe of Talmud of Babylon) and the fact that the people of Israel were commanded to observe 613 commandments and the non-Jews were commanded to observe seven.

C) The laws quoted here were written outside of Israel and their stringencies must certainly be true in the Land of Israel. In Hoshen Mishpat III, 125: 40, 41. Anyone who sells or leases to a non-Jew is excommunicated until he accepts an obligation to compensate the neighbors for any damage caused by the non-Jew so that the non-Jew will commit himself to observe Jewish law in regard to what he is allowed to do on his property without infringing on his neighbors and if he acts in a way that is not permitted by Jewish Law and the neighbor is damaged by this, the Jew who sold him the land is made to pay. If the non-Jew inflicted such damage on his neighbors and the Jew has died, his children must pay. This is in a case where the land was sold to a non-Jew where he could have sold it at the same price to a Jew. But if the Jew offers less, the owner is allowed to sell it for more to the non-Jew.(This is only true outside of Israel. In Israel, he is not allowed to sell to the non-Jew in any case)

But even outside of Israel, if the non-Jew raises his payment considerably above the normal market price, it is forbidden to sell to him since his intention is to take over a place in a Jewish area. (Chooyork) And these are his words: And when the non-Jew raises the price much more than is generally paid, the [Jewish owner] must still sell to a Jew at the proper price.

Therefore the Beis Din of the Sanhedrin strictly and absolutely forbids Jews to sell, lease, rent, or grant implied possession in any form to a non-Jew in the land of Israel at this time. The Jew who owns or leases the property is required to scrupulously guard the land so that it cannot be implied that he has ignored it or has transferred it to the control of non-Jews.

The rental of a property to a non-Jew, which brings danger to the Jewish community, is an act of treason against the Torah (Talmud Babble)  and the People of Israel. This is an act of behaving like an informer against one’s people, by handing over a national asset of the utmost importance to foreigners.

A Jewish person who hands over the possession of land to a non-Jew, from the day that this ruling is published, cannot serve as a leader of prayer in the synagogue, is not worthy of praying with a quorum, and should not be called up to the Torah.

To avoid the abuses of the English law (including executions by Henry VIII of those who criticized his repeated marriages), treason was specifically defined in the United States Constitution, the only crime so defined. Article III Section 3 delineates treason as follows:

Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court.

The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

However, Congress has, at times, passed statutes creating related offenses which undermine the government or the national security, such as sedition in the 1798 Alien and Sedition Acts, or espionage and sedition in the 1917 Espionage Act, which do not require the testimony of two witnesses and have a much broader definition than Article Three treason. For example, some well-known spies have been convicted of espionage rather than treason.

The Constitution does not itself create the offense; it only restricts the definition (the first paragraph), permits Congress to create the offense, and restricts any punishment for treason to only the convicted (the second paragraph). The crime is prohibited by legislation passed by Congress. Therefore the United States Code at 18 U.S.C. § 2381 states

Martial Law Is Their Business, And Business Sure Is Swell (Update, 9/30)

The "dream" realized: The Two Rivers Detention Facility, the proudest achievement of Hardin, Montana's political class. Sure, it's empty now, but I'm sure those nice men in the black SUVs can do something about that....



If you build it, they will come.


That would appear to be the business plan of an enigmatic California company called American Police Force (APF), which appears to be effectively taking over the town of Hardin, Montana.


The "it" in question is a large jail facility outside Hardin, Montana, that was built several years ago but thus far remains unused. "They" refers to prisoners to fill said jail -- a 114,000 square foot, 464-bed facility. APF has yet to become firmly established in Hardin (pop. 3,400), but the company's representatives are confident "the place [meaning the jail] would start filling up by 2010."


At present, the firm is said to be doing "market research," an ominous prospect, given that it's in the business of detention. And it has even spoken about the possibility of expanding the jail within a few years.


Say, that is good news -- at least for the people on AFP's payroll. Since last Thursday, when company personnel rolled into town in a convoy of black Mercedes SUVs embossed with seals advertising a non-existent "City of Hardin Police Department,"the company's payroll has increased by at least one, and possibly two, key local figures.


The first to be snapped up was Becky Shay, a former Billings Gazette reporter whose beat included the Hardin jail. Within a day of AFP's arrival, she was hired away from the paper to serve as a $60,000-a-year spokesperson for the company (a pretty hefty salary increase for a local reporter in Montana). So quickly and slickly was this career change made that Shay's editor didn't even know she had talked with AFP about the position.


Yes, that logo just screams "America!" to me: There's nothing like the combination of a crown and a double-headed imperial eagle to summon the memory of the Revolutionary War patriots who fought to free themselves from an imperial monarch. Hey, wait a minute....


Also in "discussions" with AFP is Kerri Smith, a finalist in Hardin's mayoral race and wife of Greg Smith, Executive Director of the Two Rivers Authority (TRA). The TRA is Hardin's economic development agency, which issued $27 million in bonds to build the jail as a public works project.


In what must be the most ill-conceived piece of civic boosterism ever to assault my senses, the TRA's webpage presents the Hardin jail -- that's a structure intended to deprive people of their freedom, remember -- as the poetic expression of a cherished dream: A YouTube video proudly displays slides of the jail set to the unbearable strains of Russell Watson's wretched ballad "Faith of the Heart" (the musical accompaniment is heard on the TRA's "Detention Center" webpage):

Yes, there's nothing quite like an effeminate power ballad to capture the pure aesthetic grace of a detention camp ringed by barbed wire.


Apparently, the "long road" to building that jail didn't end in prosperity. Since the finished jail has remained empty, the bonds have gone into default. At one point, Hardin's city government indicated it would accept relocated detainees from Gitmo; this prompted a legal battle between the city and the Montana state government.


Yeah, these guys look legit: What could possibly go wrong here?



Last March, AFP was incorporated in California. Shortly thereafter it began talks with Hardin city officials and the TRA.


City officials eventually announced an agreement with the mysterious firm that would bring in $2.6 million for use of the jail, in addition to an "investment" of $23 million to build a new training facility for military and police (which are assumed to be part of one integrated coercive apparatus, of course) on the same TRA-owned property.


The deal -- which was publicly announced although the specifics were never publicly disclosed -- is supposedly a cornucopia of civic benefits: New computers for the schools; a homeless shelter; a fleet of Mercedes patrol cars for the envisioned city police force; donations to the local food pantry; an animal shelter; gold-plated fixtures for the Mayor's executive washroom. OK, I made that last one up. I think.

Have you seen this man? Greg Smith, Executive Director of Hardin's Two Rivers Authority, negotiated a deal to turn over his town to what appears to be a Blackwater front group, then made himself scarce.


TRA Executive Director Greg Smith, whose wife is in discussions for a position with AFP, helped negotiate the deal. Immediately after it was finished, he was put on "administrative leave," and went to ground. (Calls from Pro Libertate to Mr. Smith's number at the TRA were not returned.)


What appears to be happening here -- and until relevant details are pried out of the prehensile grip of the people running things, we can't know for sure -- is nothing less than a corporatist-style military coup: the takeover of a small town in Montana by a politically connected, federally subsidized paramilitary organization.

At a press conference a few days ago, Becky Shay grandly announced that "The decision is the name of the parent company will not be released."


Suspicions were immediately aroused that APF is a tentacle of the corporatist mercenary company formerly known as Blackwater, but now doing business under the odd name Xe (pronounced "Zee"). However, a press spokeswoman for Xe informed Pro Libertate that "We have no connection to that company, and had never heard of it" prior to recent developments in Montana.


Hardin may well be the first of many economically devastated communities to be given a lifeline by the burgeoning military-homeland security-prison-industrial complex. Lifelines of that kind can quickly become nooses.


UPDATE: Is the Balloon Going Up -- or is the Curtain Rising on a Farce?


My first reaction when I read a write-up of recent events in Hardin was that it was a retread of every "Blue Scare" story I had dealt with more than a decade and a half ago as a researcher at The New American magazine.


Right up until the OKC bombing there was a steady stream of alarmist rumors -- many of them provoked by events at Waco and Ruby Ridge -- of various paramilitary forces gathering in obscure, distant locations to wreak havoc on innocent people. Often the accounts would include vague but insistent references to the involvement of foreign troops wearing UN insignia (hence the expression "Blue Scare" as a generic description).


What made those stories credible at all was the fact that the government ruling us had displayed an uncanny ability to exceed our lowest expectations. There's certainly an element of that at work regarding the Hardin story: The militarization of law enforcement is a documentable menace, as is the increasing impunity with which police inflict lethal or near-lethal violence on innocent citizens. The preparations for outright military rule are likewise very real, and disturbing.


Still, there is something utterly surreal about the Hardin case; it's as if some kind of martial law melodrama were being played out as an enhanced "reality" program -- something like Red Dawn meets Jericho with a touch of the Orson Welles "War of the Worlds" broadcast added for good measure.


As much as it would pain me to have been played in this fashion, I'm hoping that's what we're dealing with here. In any case, I intend to visit Hardin, find out what I can, and publish what I learn. Perhaps by then this whole thing will have proven to be an elaborate version of "Punk'd." We'll soon see....

One last thought.

Shortly before the brilliant and principled people* running The New American decided they'd be better off without my services, I wrote a piece in which I made the following prediction:


"[E]ver-mounting debt, the impending collapse of the dollar, and the unfolding garrison state--could lead to some exceptionally unpleasant outcomes. For instance: it is possible that someday in the not too distant future a foreign interest like China, Russia, or Saudi Arabia could be in charge of our prison system....

Foreign lenders are preparing to buy our country out from underneath us, taking advantage of the dollar's decline and the desperation of cash-strapped state and local governments. Notes a recent USA Today front page story: "States and local governments across the USA are preparing to cash in valuable public assets for one-time windfalls that could reap tens of billions of dollars. The deals would let governments collect billions of extra dollars without raising taxes but would reduce their future revenue."

Highways, airports, state student-loan portfolios, sewer systems, state-run lotteries--all of these are being put up for sale. Could jails and prisons be put on the auction block, as well--as post-9/11 America takes an ominous turn in the direction of a police state? With more than two million residing behind bars in the United States, and states and municipalities increasingly turning to private, for-profit entities to run these facilities, the possibility really can't be dismissed outright. Beijing, Moscow, and Riyadh all have large dollar reserves and a lot of experience in the field of incarceration. This scenario is just one of several ugly possibilities arising from our present circumstances. "

Let me add to this. The Money Changers, the Choose have called for the default of the USA, and NOW have been given complete control of the USA to Eretz  ITSREALLYHELL, and is now under absolute Noahide reign of TERROR
