I learn from Jesus that hell, for instance, is indeed everlasting. I know that there are some who try to explain this away; but I have held to the postulate that I must not tamper with the Bible’s data, especially any quote from the divine incarnation.

In addition, Jesus spoke of hell as being a place. He actually used that word – “place.” That would say to me that hell is not merely a psychological state nor emotional milieu. It is a place, just as Jesus stated that heaven is a place.

Jesus also informed that hell is torture. He speaks of that existence in descriptive verbiage so as to make one cringe. Now that kind of imaging is not popular to pronounce in a peaceful sanctuary on a sunny Lord’s Day morning when people are clapping their hands while smiling at one another.

Nevertheless, it does not seem as if God cares too much about the decorations of worship as much as He cares about the eternal worth of worship. So I would think that such imperative upon worship with its preacherly pronouncements would at some time get around to the subject matter of hell.

In fact, I would think that if one could now hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth just beyond our retinas and eardrums, we would rush to the pulpits to cry out more and more the warnings for hearers to do everything possible to keep from depositing themselves in such a hopeless, everlasting prison house.

So that brings me back to this concern I have about hell being forgotten. The world remembers hell in cursing. Gory movies bring out hell with devilment and blood. Present-day school grounds and places of business and post offices and executive offices are being shot through with hellish scenes. All the while, the church somehow has conveniently sidestepped this whole serious dimension.
