A good essay or short memo--but a tedious book Rating: Michael Scheuer is upset that he must write his books (this one and the upcoming "Imperial Hubris") under his pen name, Anonymous, or lose his CIA post. This reviewer hopes that he is made redundant in the upcoming CIA re-organization and can devote himself to his writing. He has an important message: Osama has a large following: is seen by his followers as a dedicated and devout Muslim; has proclaimed himself at war with the US since 1996; is trying and may have succeeding in securing WMD; and has built an organization that will likely outlive him. Scheuer asserts that it is more useful to think of Bin Laden as an insurgent than as a terrorist. While asserting that modern western man cannot understand the religious mindset of Islamic fundamentalists, Scheuer makes tedious recurring efforts to compare Osama to historical American figures like John Brown (useful), Tom Paine and other founding fathers (less useful).This book should be recommended to anyone ignorant of Osama and Al Qaeda. Or someone who had heard of neither before 9/11. One of the most powerful sections of the book is the summary of all of Osama's acts after declaring war on the US in 1996 and the tepid US response--what on earth were Richard Clarke, Michael Scheuer, and Bill Clinton thinking and doing?? Someone already aware of the history will wish this was a short article in Foreign Policy.Scheuer feels that our Foreign policy is fatally flawed. From his analysis the three biggest problems with US policy seem to be:1. The US backing of Israel,2. The US willingness to bomb Muslims,3. The US unwillingness to wage total war on Al Queda and its backers.Unfortunately Scheuer gives no guidance on how #2 and #3 can be reconciled and no thoughts on how to constructively abandon Israel. Maybe--when he has more time--he can think through some solutions.Early reviews of "Imperial Hubris" indicate that it is largely a retread of this book, only Bush's actions rather than Clinton's lack of action are criticized.

Scheuer was until recently known as the "anonymous" author of two books critical of the West's response to bin Laden and al Qaeda, the most recent of which is titled Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror. No one in the West knows more about the Qaeda leader than Scheuer, who has tracked him since the mid-1980s. The CIA allowed him to write the books provided he remain anonymous, but now is allowing him to reveal himself for the first time on Sunday's broadcast; he formally leaves the Agency today (12).

All those things are admirable and necessary but none of them are protecting the American people from a foreign threat," says Scheuer.

The Sanhedrin

Introduction: What is  the Sanhedrin?

Sanhedrin comes from the Greek term sunedrion  (literally, "sitting together")  meaning council.  The Sanhedrin is both a Jewish judicial and administrative body.  The Sanhedrin was composed of local elites--including members of the high-priestly family, scribes (religious experts), and lay elders.  It probably operated under some sort of Roman oversight, at least with respect to its taxing, law enforcement, and other administrative functions.  According to gospel accounts, Jesus was brought before the Jerusalem Sanhedrin, presided over by high priest Joseph Caiaphas. Pharisees of Hasidim.....Today known as Chabad Lubavitchers, Illuminated Masters....Illuminati Around 200 C.E., Sanhedrin becomes a technical term for a rabbinic court.  A tractate in the Mishnah (Talmud Bavli)  prescribes procedures the Sanhedrin is to use.   The excerpts below, taken from the Mishnah Tractate, may shed light on the procedures used in the case of Jesus.  One caution, however: the Mishnah was not compiled until 200, and it is therefore possible that some of the procedures and restrictions described in the Mishnah Tractate were not in force in the time of Jesus.  They were indeed. The Talmud Bavli Mishnah Torah is the tradition which Jessus spoke of which made his WORD of None effect to these satanic vipers. Mammon of thei shemgods are their only priority and they only use Jesus' name for lip service.   The gospel of John indicates that the Sanhedrin turned Jesus over to Pilate because it lacked the power to impose death: "Pilate said to them, 'Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.'  The Jews replied, 'We are not permitted to put anyone to death.'"  The Mishnah, however, clearly shows that the Sanhedrin did have the power to impose death for certain crimes--at least sometime before 200 C.E.  In particular, Mishnah Sanhedrin 6.1 to 6.4 specify the procedures for stoning.  There is no evidence to suggest that the power did not exist in 30 C.E.  On the contrary, there is evidence that the Romans preferred to leave as much power as possible to control religious crimes in the hands of Jewish authorities. Premeditated murder of GOD's ONLY Begotten SON Mark and Matthew indicate that the trial before the Sanhedrin occurred at night and a capital trial at night was illegal.  Mishnah Sanhedrin 4.1 confirms the illegality of a capital trial at night, assuming that the law stated in the Mishnah existed in 30 C.E. Mark indicates that the charge against Jesus was blasphemy: "You have heard the blasphemy (Mark 14:64)." Under Mishnah Tractate 7.5, blasphemy consists only of uttering the name of God, so there is reason to question whether in fact that was the charge against Jesus.  If it is assumed to be the charge, however, Mishhah Tractate 7.4 makes clear that execution by stoning was an available option for such a crime. Peru gives green light for gays in military to have sex

LIMA (AFP) - Peru's constitutional court has granted gays in the military the freedom to have sex, declaring that a rule which had deemed such relations illegal was unconstitutional.

The army's rule had stipulated that military personnel could not engage in sexual relations with persons of the same sex either within or outside their barracks.

But constitutional court official Samuel Abad dubbed that rule "completely discriminatory."

Gays in the armed forces had been subject to expulsion or prison sentences if they engaged in homosexual relations, even outside their barracks, under a rule that Aldo Araujo of Lima's Homosexual Movement gay rights group declared "a violation of people's right to privacy."

Morocco arrests 256 illegal migrants

RABAT, Nov 12 (Reuters) - Morocco has arrested 256 illegal migrants in the past four days, state media reported on Friday as the kingdom cracks down on people trying to reach Europe.

Authorities in several cities have detained 247 sub-Saharan Africans, five Bangladeshis and one Algerian, said official news agency MAP quoting the Interior Ministry. Three Moroccans were also arrested, the agency said.

In July, 1982, at an Israel Defense Forces outpost at the port of Beirut, I saw, through field glasses, the late Palestinian Authority chairman Yasser Arafat board the Greek ferryboat and leave Beirut, after causing widespread destruction there. A week ago, I saw him board the Jordanian helicopter when he left Israel, which he left bleeding after four years of intifada and 4,000 casualties. This time, it was an exit that includes an opportunity for change.

The opportunity that has been created with Arafat's death cries out for swift, courageous and intelligent exploitation. The Palestinian leadership that is being formed is in need of concrete achievements and is ready for deeds that were impossible during Arafat's era. In order to end the war and to change the atmosphere, there is need for a practical plan of action with a good chance of success.

The simplest thing to do, a step the success of which will bring about a substantial change in the situation, is a cooperative and coordinated implementation of Israel's exit from the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria. In other words - handing over the Gaza Strip to a responsible and functioning Palestinian government.

There are six reasons why this step has a chance:

The disengagement plan has widespread support among the Israeli public; from the Palestinian point of view, the plan is a kind of initial precedent for a full Israeli withdrawal from an area that is filled with settlements, and there is no opposition to it among the Palestinians; the international community will provide political and economic support for a plan for evacuating Gaza that is not declared to be the last withdrawal; the success of the plan will serve the Palestinian government as proof of its ability to govern effectively in a territory handed over to its control; a coordinated Israeli disengagement from Gaza has a good chance of stopping the terror from Gaza; such a coordinated implementation is likely (even according to the data of the World Bank) to lead to a significant improvement in the standard of living in Gaza, which has deteriorated drastically.

I can attest from personal knowledge that there is a willingness for such a step among the Palestinian leadership. In March-April 2003, I formulated, together with the representatives of the Palestinian prime minister at the time, Abu Mazen (Mahmoud Abbas), and of then minister Mohammed Dahlan an agreement that was called the "Gaza Pilot." Its main feature was a gradual withdrawal by Israel from Gaza within a year, conditional on the elimination of terror and accompanied by economic development of the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government did not like the idea; Abu Mazen fell, under the familiar circumstances; and in December 2004, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon announced his plan for a unilateral withdrawal.

As reported by Haaretz correspondent Aluf Benn, a group of leading Israelis and Palestinians recently formulated an operational plan that involves turning the unilateral disengagement into a plan coordinated with the Palestinians, and supported by the international community and by Arab countries that are willing. This plan does not touch the sensitive issues of a final status agreement. It spells out mutual arrangements, both economic and security-related, that benefit both parties - a Palestinian operation to end terror, accompanied by an end to the belligerent operations of the IDF; at the same time, gradual and significant lifting of restrictions on Palestinian movement and commerce; development of infrastructure, agriculture and industry in the Gaza Strip by a combination of foreign investors and the Palestinian business sector; using the areas of the evacuated settlements to establish building initiatives for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip; development of industrial zones on the border, like the Karni industrial zone; a monitored increase in employment of Palestinians in Israel, until enough jobs are created in Gaza. All these are some of the elements of the plan whose architects include members of the Palestinian administration as well.

Neither this plan nor any other is sacred. The important thing is that the two governments immediately engage in practical discussions on how to carry out the security and economic aspects of the disengagement. Success in Gaza will bring an end to the war and will serve as the corridor for returning to the road map peace plan. We must not miss this historic opportunity; we must restore hope.

WASHINGTON Nov. 9 (JTA) — It’s like one of those family fights that devolves into shouts of “You just don’t get it.”

Conservative Christians wonder if “blue-state” voters — those in states that went Democratic — get the values that drove them to the polls in unprecedented numbers to re-elect George W. Bush.

People who voted for John Kerry — among them, three quarters of the Jewish electorate — wonder if “red-state” voters that went Republican understand why those values make them nervous.

In election exit surveys conducted by the American Jewish Committee, Jews who voted for the Massachusetts senator on Nov. 2 consistently cited the Democrats’ position on church-state separation. Now, President Bush’s claim that he has a mandate from the 51 percent of voters who chose him has many Jewish officials worried.

They worry especially that a plurality of Bush voters — 22 percent — cited “moral values” as the primary reason for their votes. Such moral values include opposition to abortion rights, a greater role for religion in government and opposition to gay marriage.

“The message that the Christian right think the election is a success for them has caught people’s attention,” said Hannah Rosenthal, executive director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, an umbrella body for Jewish community relations councils nationwide. “Whether or not it really is a success, their proclamation that they have increased the power has caused a great deal of discomfort to the community.”

Certainly, there has been no lack of preening by some Christian leaders.

“Those who live in Hollywood and those who live on the upper West Side of Manhattan have a different view of morality, of what is acceptable, of what a good code of conduct should be, than those who live in the middle of the country,” Galen said.

“As an example, most people in America think that same-sex marriage is wrong,” he said. “It is far different than acceptance of homosexuality as a fact of life, which most people do. In the New York Times principal circulation area — and in the L.A. Basin — I suspect a huge majority not only think that same-sex marriages are acceptable, but should be celebrated and, further, believe that anyone who disagrees with them is ignorant and unsophisticated.”

The post-election triumphalism on the right may presage a stronger push to bring Christianity into the public square, and many Jewish officials — especially those in the red states — are ready for a backlash.

“People are questioning where the line is,” said Deborah Lauter, regional director for the Anti-Defamation League in Georgia. “There has been an increase in stealth evangelism. We’re seeing it everywhere.”

Lauter says that when she trades battle stories with other regional directors, the others deal primarily with anti-Israel activism, while much of her work has to do with stemming Christian influence.

Some recent examples in Georgia are evangelicals who distribute pamphlets in public schools, stickers that appear in school textbooks disclaiming evolutionary theory, and the curious case of a Jewish cheerleader singled out by her Christian coach.

Jaclyn Steele anguished for months before bringing her case to public attention, said her stepfather, David Bernath.

“It has been a gut-wrenching decision for our family to do this,” Bernath said of the case they made against cheerleading coach Marilou Braswell at the University of Georgia in Athens. “We thought about not doing this, but we made the decision we couldn’t let this go on.”

An avid cheerleader since her early teens, Steele at first tried to avoid the references to Jesus in the locker room, and the prayer sessions at Braswell’s house. Eventually she was prompted to act by other cheerleaders who told her that failure to participate in the prayer sessions would probably keep her off the “A” team.

The family met with Braswell, but it didn’t go well.

“She told us, ‘Well, you know we live in the Bible Belt, what do you expect, this is the way I was raised,’ ” Bernath recalled. “She never got it.”

Braswell eventually toned down the evangelism, but the university fired her after she singled out Steele at the beginning of the school year in a prepared statement she read to cheerleaders about the controversy.

Bernath said the family was heartened by the support it received in the media and at the university, a sign that evangelism was not pervasive. But he worried that it was increasing, citing his own experience in keeping evangelical pamphleteers out of schools in Marietta, Ga., and said Bush’s re-election was a harbinger of more to come.

“Even though George Bush says he respects everyone’s faith — and I believe, deep in his heart, he does — the religious right is ready to cash in what it can,” Bernath said.

Braswell already has grass-roots organizations campaigning for her rehiring. A group called the Center for Reclaiming America has urged a letter-writing campaign.

That kind of reaction can be harmful for Jews, say some Jewish officials, who cite the evangelicals’ friendliness on other matters — especially support for Israel.

“It is wrong and short-sighted of Israel and the Jewish community not to reach out to these people, even as they become more and more powerful,” said Yechiel Eckstein, president of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, who fund-raises among evangelical Christians for Israeli and Jewish causes.

Avi Shafran, director of public affairs for the fervently Orthodox Agudath Israel of America, said Orthodox Jews voted in similar patterns to believing Christians because they were concerned by the same perceived government imbalance toward liberal policies on abortion and gay marriage.

“Moral concerns do not equate with Christian concerns,” Shafran said. “Many of these concerns are shared with Jews, in the Orthodox community and beyond.”

The key, he suggested, is for Jews not to slavishly join one camp or the other, allowing them to point out differences with either side when they arise.

“There may well be crazies, people who want to see total dismantlement of the wall between church and state,” Shafran said of the Christian right. “That doesn’t mean I have to mitigate my concerns.”

Mark Rubenstein, executive director of Touro Synagogue in New Orleans, noticed an interesting reaction a few years ago at an ecumenical Thanksgiving celebration that rotates among local churches and synagogues.

“That year, it was at a Baptist church, and it became a revival meeting,” he said. “The minister was not attentive at all to the ecumenical aspect.”

Jews who attended the service were upset — but so were Episcopalian and Catholic clergy, he said.

That held out hope, said Rubenstein, whose synagogue coordinates programs with inner-city black churches and mosques.

“If anything, people are being more aware of the need to try to be ecumenical,” he said.

Although voting results were barely in and John Kerry had not yet announced he would concede the U.S. presidential election, Rabbi Abraham Cooper was ready to suggest the 2004 vote marked a dramatic change in the voting patterns of American Jews.

Jewish voters “are shifting to the Republicans,” Rabbi Cooper, associate dean of the Los Angeles-based Simon Wiesenthal Center, told The CJN during a trip to Toronto last week.

Although he was off in his estimates – Rabbi Cooper said as many as 35 to 40 per cent of Jewish voters had cast their ballots for President George Bush on Nov. 2, while exit polls indicated the figure was closer to 25 per cent – he said the trend is for young Jews and the Orthodox to move toward Republican candidates.

In 2000, Bush received 19 per cent of the Jewish vote, and in 1992, Bush’s father, George H.W. Bush, garnered 11 per cent of the Jewish vote.

Rabbi Cooper said a revealing event took place in Boca Raton, Fla., after he addressed a Jewish audience of 250 to 300 people in the weeks leading up to the election. After his talk, 15 members of the audience approached him to say they intended to vote for Bush, but “they didn’t want their friends to hear.”

Many Jews, he continued, recognize Bush as a steadfast friend of Israel who has declined to prevent Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon from carrying out the policies that he feels best ensures the country’s security. Kerry, on the other hand, “did not go out of his way to offer more than lip service for Israel.”

Rabbi Cooper said he’d been informed by sources close to the Democratic Party that Kerry removed a reference to Israel in the nomination acceptance speech he delivered at the party’s summer convention.

Kerry was being sensitive to the views of some young Democratic activists, but in doing so, he sent a signal to many in the Jewish community that helped erode their support for him, the rabbi said.

While Kerry campaigned in Florida by raising concerns about seniors losing their social security, young Jews don’t feel as bound by ties to the Democratic Party as their elders, particularly those who remain loyal to the party of Franklin Roosevelt, Rabbi Cooper said. However, many Jews will continue to support the Democratic Party as long as it maintains its liberal social policy agenda, he added.

Nevertheless, Rabbi Cooper believes a change in political allegiance might benefit the Jewish community. “It’s not good for Jews to be exclusively in any camp” and be taken for granted by the Democrats, he said.

In drawing closer to the Republican Party and its core base of support, “many American Jewish groups, including us, are more at ease dealing with evangelical Christian groups.” Rabbi Cooper acknowledged that many evangelicals would like to convert Jews to Christianity, “but we’re confident in our beliefs and happy they support Israel.

B’nai Brith criticized for official’s terror remarks

A leading Canadian Arab group says last week’s resignation of a B’nai Brith Canada official over controversial remarks he’d made on a television talk show isn’t enough.

Adam Aptowitzer apologized and resigned as Ontario chair of B’nai Brith Canada’s Institute for International Affairs for statements he made supporting the use of terror to protect Israel’s citizens.

His comments were made on the same Oct. 19 edition of Michael Coren Live as Canadian Islamic Congress president Mohamed Elmasry’s notorious remark that all Israeli civilians over the age of 18 are legitimate targets for attack.

Elmasry, who came in for national condemnation, offered his resignation, which was refused by his group.

On the show, which discussed the topic, “What is a Terrorist?” Aptowitzer called terror a “means to an end.”

Others have argued that the entire issue is irrelevant until the days of the Moshiach Nevertheless, it seems clear that Maimonides intended that whenever it was possible to compel observance, Jews should make an effort to do so.

 

Other medieval authorities, rather than attempting to re-interpret Maimonides' statement, simply disagreed. Rabbi Abraham ibn Daud clearly rejects any obligation to compel observance of the Noahide laws, even in a situation where Jews have subjugated non-Jews in war. This seems to be the opinion of Rashi, Tosafot, Nahmanides, and Rashba, as well. In dealing with individual non-Jews as employees or slaves, none of the legal codes, aside from Maimonides', mentions an obligation to impose Noahide laws or to punish non-Jews for violation of the Noahide laws.

 

By way of contrast, when Jews are likely to sin, other Jews are obligated to try and prevent that sin through intervention and education. In general, in modern times, no such obligation is mandated towards non-Jews who violate the Noahide laws. 

A notable and forceful exception is the opinion of the late Rabbi Menahem Mendel Schneerson, the last leader of Lubavitch Hasidism. Schneerson wrote:

 

"We must do everything possible to ensure that the seven Noahide laws are observed. If this can be accomplished through force or through other kinder and more peaceful means through explaining to non-Jews that they should accept God's wishes [we should do so]…

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) - Scott Peterson was convicted Friday of murdering his pregnant wife and dumping her body in San Francisco Bay in what prosecutors in the made-for-cable-TV case portrayed as a cold-blooded attempt to escape marriage and fatherhood for the bachelor life.

Peterson, 32, could get the death penalty. He was convicted of one count of first-degree murder for killing his wife, Laci, and one count of second-degree murder in the death of the son she was carrying.

Family members intensely waited in the courtroom and hundreds of onlookers gathered outside to hear word of the verdict.

The verdict came after a five-month trial that was an endless source of fascination to the tabloids, People magazine and the cable networks with its story of an attractive, radiant young couple awaiting the birth of their first child, a cheating husband, and a slaying for which prosecutors had no eyewitnesses, no weapon, not even a cause of death.

The verdict followed a tumultuous seven days of deliberations in which two jurors were removed for unspecified reasons and the judge twice told the panel to start over.

The jury of six men and six women will now decide whether he should die by lethal injection or get life in prison without parole.

The US has been forced to pull troops out of Fallujah to fight growing insurgency in other Iraqi cities, it emerged today.

 

An entire light armoured brigade has been sent to bolster US forces in Mosul, Iraq's third largest city, after insurgents stormed police stations and looted weapons, ammunition and body armour.

 

They are also said to have seized five bridges across the Tigris and have been seen riding through the streets waving their guns in blatant shows of force.

Violence has also erupted in the "Sunni triangle" west of Baghdad with ambushes and bombings in Tikrit, Kirkuk, Hawija, Samarra and Ramadi, 30 miles west of Fallujah.
