Attempts to re-establish a Sanhedrin had been made in the past, for instance after the establishment of the state. However, that initiative was rejected by the ultra-Orthodox.

The Sanhedrin, a religious assembly that convened in one of the Holy Temple chambers in Jerusalem, comprised 71 sages (Seventy and the High Priest Kohen Gadol) and existed during the Tannaitic period, from several decades before the Common Era until roughly 425 C.E. Details of today's ceremony are still sketchy, but the organizers' announced their intention to convene 71 rabbis who have received special rabbinic ordination as specified by Maimonides.

An attempt to reconvene the Sanhedrin was made several centuries ago in Tzfat. The body in fact ordained such greats as Rabbi Yosef Karo, the author of the classic Jewish Law code Shulhan Arukh. However, the opposition of other leading rabbis soon forced the end of the endeavor.

One of the leaders of today's attempt to revive the Sanhedrin is Rabbi Yeshai Ba'avad of Beit El. He said that the 71 rabbis "from across the spectrum received the special ordination, in accordance with Maimonides' rulings, over the past several months." Rabbi Ba'avad explained that the membership of the new body is not permanent: "What is much more crucial is the establishment of this body. Those who are members of it today will not necessarily be its members tomorrow. But the goal is to have one rabbinic body in Jerusalem that will convene monthly and issue rulings on central issues.

This is the need of the generation and of the hour."

Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, who heads the Temple institute in Jerusalem, is one of the participating rabbis. He told Arutz-7 today, "Whether this will be the actual Sanhedrin that we await, is a question of time - just like the establishment of the State; we rejoiced in it, but we are still awaiting something much more ideal. It's a process. Today's ceremony is really the continuation of the renewal of the Ordination process in Israel, which we marked several months ago. Our Talmudic Sages describe the ten stages of exile of the Sanhedrin from Jerusalem to other locations, until it ended in Tiberias - and this is the place where it was foretold that it would be renewed, and from here it will be relocated to Jerusalem."

Rabbi Ariel said that the rabbis there included many from the entire spectrum:
"Hareidi, religious-Zionist, Sephardi, Ashkenazi, hassidi, and many others - such as Rabbi Yoel Schwartz, Rabbi Adin Shteinzaltz, and many others... We can't expect a great consensus; that's not how things work here. But sometimes that's how the process goes, from the bottom up."

In a U.S. election campaign that is more about foreign policy than any presidential race in decades, one issue is completely off-limits: the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
George W. Bush and John Kerry both back Israel 100 per cent, and neither man will offer a single word of criticism about Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's "disengagement" plan, even though it means abandoning the notion of a peace settlement.
Once again, the Israeli tail is wagging the American dog.
Last week, Sharon's chief of staff and most trusted adviser, Dov Weisglass, indulged in a carefully calculated indiscretion in an interview with the newspaper Ha'aretz.
"The `disengagement' is actually formaldehyde," he said. "It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so there will not be a political process with the Palestinians." Perfectly true, of course, and yet it was a shocking thing to say out loud.
Sharon was never really going to accept a peace deal with the Palestinians that required giving up most of the illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied territories conquered by Israel in 1967. Indeed, he was the man responsible for starting the settlements in the first place.
Yet, when he came to power in 2001 he inherited the Oslo peace accords, which imagined an Israeli-Palestinian peace based on two states living side by side — and the Palestinian state was to be created on exactly those territories.
Sharon had to pretend that he agreed with that goal because the whole international community (including the U.S.) supported the two-state solution. Over the past few years the "Oslo process" mutated into the so-called "road map" to peace, but the goal remained the same: Israeli evacuation of the occupied territories and the creation of a Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel. In the past six months, however, Sharon has achieved breakout.
"Disengagement" means that Israel will evacuate its settlements in the densely populated Gaza Strip, where 7,500 Jews live surrounded by 1.3 million Palestinians, and four other tiny settlements with only a few hundred people that lie beyond the "security fence" in the northern West Bank.
They never made any sense in terms of the cost of protecting them anyway.
But by abandoning them, Sharon can seem to be making a major concession for peace — while hanging on to all the other West Bank settlements where the vast majority of the settlers live forever.
Forever is a long time, and Sharon still maintains the pretense that at some future time, when there is a different Palestinian leadership, there might be further negotiations about a Palestinian state.
But Weisglass spilled the beans on Oct. 6, pointing out that he had negotiated an agreement with the Bush administration in late August in which the United States had changed its policy of 37 years and agreed that the illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank would eventually become part of Israel.
The 190,000 Jewish settlers there, he boasted, "will not be moved from their place."
"What I effectively agreed to with the Americans was that part of the settlements would not be dealt with at all, and the rest will not be dealt with until the Palestinians turn into Finns," said Weisglass, adding that this would stall the peace process indefinitely.
"When you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and you prevent a discussion on the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem.
"Effectively, this whole package called the Palestinian state, with all that it entails, has been removed indefinitely from our agenda ... all with a presidential blessing and the ratification of both houses of Congress."
Weisglass said what he did to win back the more fundamentalist supporters of Sharon's Likud party, who are threatening to abandon the party on the grounds that God gave Israel the land and it must never yield an inch of it.
Bush, presumably, did what he did in order to retain the votes of the extreme evangelical Protestants, estimated to account for a third of the Republican core vote, who believe that God's plan requires the expansion of Israel and a great war in the Middle East.
But why does Kerry go along with it?
Presumably because his advisers tell him that in a tight election it would be suicide to alienate American Jews, most of whom reflexively support any Israeli government, regardless of its policies, and most of whom are still traditionally Democratic voters.
It all make sense in terms of political tactics, but it commits America to a policy that is contrary to international law and is not supported by any other government in the world except Israel's.
If Kerry should win, it means he, too, would be shackled to a policy that makes it impossible for America's European and Arab allies to co-operate in any Middle Eastern initiative he might launch with the goal of extricating American troops from the mess in Iraq.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Medical milestone or privacy invasion? A tiny computer chip approved Wednesday for implantation in a patient's arm can speed vital information about a patient's medical history to doctors and hospitals. But critics warn that it could open new ways to imperil the confidentiality of medical records.
The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that Applied Digital Solutions of Delray Beach, Fla., could market the VeriChip, an implantable computer chip about the size of a grain of rice, for medical purposes.
The news pleased investors. On Wednesday, Applied Digital shares were up $1.45, or 68.4 percent, at $3.57 on the Nasdaq Stock Market - near the middle of their 52-week range of $1.94 to $5.
With the pinch of a syringe, (vaccination) the microchip is inserted under the skin in a procedure that takes less than 20 minutes and leaves no stitches. Silently and invisibly, the dormant chip stores a code that releases patient-specific information when a scanner passes over it.

The microchips have already been implanted in 1 million pets. But the chip's possible dual use for tracking people's movements - as well as speeding delivery of their medical information to emergency rooms - has raised alarm.
"If privacy protections aren't built in at the outset, there could be harmful consequences for patients," said Emily Stewart, a policy analyst at the Health Privacy Project.
To protect patient privacy, the devices should reveal only vital medical information, like blood type and allergic reactions, needed for health care workers to do their jobs, Stewart said.
An information technology guru at Detroit Medical Center, however, sees the benefits of the devices and will lobby for his center's inclusion in a VeriChip pilot program.
"One of the big problems in health care has been the medical records situation. So much of it is still on paper," said David Ellis, the center's chief futurist and co-founder of the Michigan Electronic Medical Records Initiative.
As "medically mobile" patients visit specialists for care, their records fragment on computer systems that don't talk to each other.
"It's part of the future of medicine to have these kinds of technologies that make life simpler for the patient," Ellis said. Pushing for the strongest encryption algorithms to ensure hackers can't nab medical data as information transfers from chip to reader to secure database, will help address privacy concerns, he said.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday announced $139 million in grants to help make real President Bush's push for electronic health records for most Americans within a decade.
William A. Pierce, an HHS spokesman, could not say whether VeriChip and its accompanying secure database of medical records fit within that initiative.
"Exactly what those technologies are is still to be sorted out," Pierce said. "It all has to respect and comport with the privacy rules."
Applied Digital gave away scanners to a few hundred animal shelters and veterinary clinics when it first entered the pet market 15 years ago. Now, 50,000 such scanners have been sold.
To kickstart the chip's use among humans, Applied Digital will provide $650 scanners for free at 200 of the nation's trauma centers.
In pets, installing the chip runs about $50. For humans, the chip implantation cost would be $150 to $200, said Angela Fulcher, an Applied Digital spokeswoman.
Fulcher could not say whether the cost of data storage and encrypted transmission of medical information would be passed to providers.
Ultimately, the company hopes patients who suffer from such ailments as diabetes and Alzheimer's or who undergo complex treatments, like chemotherapy, would have chips implanted. If the procedure proves as popular for use in humans as in pets, that could mean up to 1 million chips implanted in people.
The company's chief executive officer, Scott R. Silverman, is one of a half dozen executives who had chips implanted. Silverman said chips implanted for medical uses could also be used for security purposes, like tracking employee movement through nuclear power plants.
Such security uses are rare in the United States.
Meanwhile, the chip has been used for pure whimsy: Club hoppers in Barcelona, Spain, now use the microchip to enter a VIP area and, through links to a different database, speed payment much like a smartcard.

WASHINGTON -- US Jewish organizations have hailed final congressional approval of a bill that compels the State Department to create a special office to monitor anti-Semitic abuses around the world and compile annual reports rating countries on their treatment of Jews.

The bill, known as the Global Anti-Semitism Awareness Act, was introduced by Democratic Representative Tom Lantos, the only Holocaust survivor in the US Congress, in response to recent acts of anti-Semitism in Europe and the Middle East.

The measure quietly cleared both the Senate and the House of Representatives by agreement and voice vote late last week " over objections by the State Department.

The department has opposed the bill because it felt it would be seen as giving preferential treatment to Jews over other religious or ethnic groups in human rights reporting.

But last month, it received an angry letter from more than 100 prominent Americans, including former Republican vice presidential nominee Jack Kemp and ex-UN Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick, saying that US diplomats were "wrong."

"It is the anti-Semites who are singling out Jews, and that is why the fight against anti-Semitism deserves specific, focused attention," the letter said.

Under the legislation, the State Department will have to produce an annual report on anti-Semitism around the world and publish it as part of its annual review of human rights. Moreover, the bill creates a specific office within the department that would document anti-Semitic abuses and design strategies to combat them. It would be headed by a special envoy to spearhead the worldwide fight against anti-Semitism.

"Globalists Adopting Jewish Laws"

September 08, 2004 As the globalists continue on their irreversible course

toward international enslavement, it is obvious that their ultimate goal will

be attained via the imposition of a one-world government and religion.

These objectives closely intersect with the recent adoption of "The Noahide

Laws" as a universal legal code. On Dec. 27, 1991 President George H. W.

Bush signed into law a Congressional Joint Resolution known as "Education

Day USA".

This was a thinly veiled ruse devised to circumvent and supersede existing

legal codes by affirming in the resolution's language that all civilizations

from the beginning have been based upon the aforementioned Noahide Laws.

Encyclopedia Americana states that these laws are "...a Jewish Talmudic

designation for seven biblical laws given to Adam and to Noah BEFORE

the revelation to Moses at Mt. Sinai and subsequently binding all mankind."

More incisive sources have tracked the true origin of these laws to Egyptian

and Babylonian mysticism which has long been the basis of Freemasonic

and Gnostic teachings.

Nonetheless, the encyclopedia of Judaism defines the Noahide Laws as

follows:

(1) Civil justice [the duty to establish a legal system];

(2) Prohibition of blasphemy [which includes the bearing of false witness]

(3) The abandonment of idolatry;

(4) The prohibition of incest [including murder and adultery]

(5) The prohibition of murder;

(6) Also that of theft;

(7) The law against eating flesh [a limb] cut from a living animal

[i.e.., cruelty in any shape or form]

The Talmud also states: "One additional element of greater severity is that

violation of any one of these seven laws subjects the Noahide to capital

punishment by decapitation. (Sanh. 57A)"

While at the most superficial level these laws would seem to represent

universally accepted moral and legal concepts, their institution comprises

a complete reversal of many established judicial principles and procedures

guaranteed by the American constitution and generally accepted within

the Western world.

Since the adoption of these "natural laws" would place the entire international

community under the Talmudic Law of Orthodox Judaism, the separation

between church and state would be hopelessly obscured. Additionally, under

Noahide Law as specified in the Talmud, there is no assurance of due process

(only some sort of legal proceeding), no presumption of innocence until proven

guilty, and no guarantee of a jury trial.

Even the requirement as stated in Deut. 17:6 of two or three witnesses being

necessary to condemn a person to death is reduced to only one witness

("judged righteous") within the fine print of Talmudic Noahide Law.

Furthermore, Gentiles and Jews appear to receive unequal treatment under

these laws, to the degree that Jews may not be even liable for crimes

committed against Gentiles.

Christians who worship Jesus Christ have been judged in violation of both

the prohibitions against idolatry and blasphemy by many prominent Talmudic

rabbinical scholars and could therefore be sentenced to death by decapitation

for merely practicing their faith under literal Noahide Law. With no specific

protections against cruel and unusual punishment, a literal interpretation of

Noahide Law could even result in capital punishment for those accused of

animal abuse - sure to make it extremely popular with PETA.

The process for eventual global implementation of this legal code would

appear to have been initiated with the United Nations Security Council

resolution of May 25, 1993 establishing an International Criminal Tribunal.

(Claiming to act under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, the Security Council,

in fact violated its own charter which originally stated that the Council has

no power whatever in judicial matters - that power is supposedly vested

within the current International Court of Justice, the same court which

recently condemned Israel's construction of the West Wall.)

After several of these questionable tribunals were convened to prosecute

war criminals and dispense "justice" in areas like Rwanda and Yugoslavia,

it would appear that all of the judicial entities involved will ultimately be

merged into a singular International Criminal Court, by a process started

with the Rome Statute of 1998 - a definite movement toward the establishment

of a real rather than a perfunctory international legal system.

Further, the attempted infiltration of Noahide Law has permeated all levels

of international society and theology, even a meeting organized by the

Diocese of Rome on Jan. 17, 2002. The meeting discussed the Noahide

Laws and was chaired on the Jewish side by Rabbi Riccardo di Segni,

who replaced Rabbi Elio Toaff as Chief Rabbi of Rome. Rabbi di Segni

openly and candidly expressed his own personal doubts about the

compatibility of Christianity with Noahide prohibitions against idolatry

and blasphemy.

Finally, it should be noted that Public Law 102-14 -- established from the

Education Day, USA debacle - singles out one Jewish group as especially

embodying the principles of Noahide Law: The ultra-orthodox Chabad

Lubavitch Movement, known for its anal-retentive adherence to the tiniest

detail of Talmudic Law, as well as its recent befriending of Russian President

Vladmir Putin.

In the specific wording of the law, the Congress and the President of the

United States declare that the group's rabbi is "universally respected and

revered" and that the Lubavitch movement has "fostered and promoted

these seven Noahide Laws." Since Jewish scholars themselves have

proclaimed Lubavitch Talmudism to be the equivalent of the Pharisees

of Christ's day, it is no great leap of logic to compare the universal adoption

of Noahidic Law to an international revival of the Sanhedrin, the traditional

Hebrew Supreme Court of rabbis.

Mankind will in effect be subjecting itself to the same shadowy amalgamation

of intellectuals, clerics and occultists who ruled Judea in ancient times, and

whom Jesus in his earthly ministry loudly denounced as, "...scribes and

Pharisees, hypocrites!...you serpents, you generation of vipers, how will

Tiberias

Titular see, suffragan of Scythopolis, in Palaestina Secunda. The town of Tiberias was founded on the lake in A.D. 17 by Herod Antipas, tetrarch of Galilee, who gave it the name of the reigning emperor, Tiberius. As tombs were discovered there at the time of its foundation the Jews refused to dwell there, and Herod was forced to populate it with foreigners and people of low extraction (Josephus, "Ant. jud.," XVIII, ii, 3). What it was previously called is not known; St. Jerome makes it the site now of Reccath, now of Emath, now of Cenereth or Kinnereth, towns of Nephthali (Jos., XIX, 35). The town seems to have been a little more than three miles in circumference. Although Tiberias gave its name to the neighbouring lake and is mentioned several times in the Gospels, it seems never to have been dwelt in by Christ. The Sanhedrin was the supreme council of Israel. As long as it stood, it was the supreme court and legislative body in all matters of Torah law.

Torah Mishnah of Talmud Bavli

As such, the Sanhedrin was entrusted with keeping and interpreting the Oral Torah.

Mk:7:13: Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

It is a positive commandment to set up courts to interpret and decide questions of Torah law.

It is thus written, "You shall appoint judges and officers in all your gates, which God is giving you" (Deut. 16:18).

Mk:7:9:

And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

The commandment includes the communal responsibility to appoint a duly ordained Sanhedrin. This precedes the establishment of other courts.

The Sanhedrin consisted of 71 judges. God thus commanded Moses, "Gather to Me 70 men of the elders of Israel... and bring them to the Tent of Meeting, so that they should stand there with you" (Numbers 11:16). This was the first Sanhedrin. Counting Moses himself, it consisted of 71 members.

Since the membership of the Sanhedrin is fixed by the Torah, its number cannot be changed.

Nevertheless, it was permitted to allow outside sages to enter into the deliberations of the Sanhedrin without voting privileges. Cases are therefore sometimes found in which a greater number participate in a decision.

The Sanhedrin could not render judgment unless its entire membership was present. If a member was absent, however, a temporary substitute could be appointed.

The leading sage of the Sanhedrin was appointed as its head, taking the place of Moses in the first Sanhedrin. His official title was "Head of the Sitting" (Rosh HaYeshiva). Later, however, he was referred to as the "President" (Nasi).

Any judgment issued by the Sanhedrin in the absence of the Nasi was invalid.

The second-ranking sage of the Sanhedrin was appointed as assistant to the Nasi. He was known as the "Master of the Court" (Av Beit Din). Both he and the Nasi were voting members of the Sanhedrin.

The Sanhedrin would sit in a semicircle, so that all its members would be able to see each other. They would also have an equal view of all witnesses testifying.

Out of respect for the Nasi, the Av Beit Din would sit at the extreme right. He would be followed by the Nasi, and then by the rest of the Sanhedrin in order of their capability.

Qualifications for Membership

Every member of the Sanhedrin had to be distinguished in Torah knowledge, wisdom, humility, fear of God, indifference to monetary gain, love of truth, love of fellow man, and good reputation.

Mt:16:6: Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

It is thus written, "You shall provide out of all the people, able men, who fear God, men of truth, disdaining unjust gain, and place them over [the people]" (Exodus 18:21). It is likewise written, "Take from each of your tribes, wise men, with understanding and full of knowledge, and I will make them your leaders" (Deut. 1:13).

Mt:5:20: For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Since the Sanhedrin had to be competent to render judgment in all cases that came before it, all its members had to be expert in all areas of the Torah. They also had to have enough knowledge of science and mathematics to be able to adapt Torah law to all possible problems.

Members of the Sanhedrin likewise had to have knowledge of other religions, as well as the teachings of idolatry and the occult arts, so as to be able to render judgment in cases involving these matters. For this reason, even studies which were normally discouraged or forbidden, were permitted to members of the Sanhedrin when these studies were required for judgment.

The Sanhedrin was required to hear all testimony directly, and not through an interpreter. It is therefore preferable that its members be familiar with all the languages spoken by Jews around the world.

When a foreign language is used in testimony, the Sanhedrin must have at least two members who speak that language to examine the witnesses. There must also be a third member who understands the language. These three members then constitute a minor court (beit din) of three,

who can report the testimony to the entire body. Once testimony has been accepted by a minor court, it is no longer considered second-hand testimony.

In order that the Sanhedrin command the utmost respect, its members must be of good appearance, and free of bodily defect. Therefore, a person who is blind, even in one eye, cannot be a member of the Sanhedrin.

Age and Lineage

Similarly, the members of the Sanhedrin must command respect as mature individuals. Therefore, it is preferable that each member be at least 40 years old, unless he is incomparable in wisdom and universally respected. Similarly, it is preferable that the head of the Sanhedrin be at least 50 years old. Under no condition should a person under 18 be appointed to the Sanhedrin.

A person who is very old may not sit on the Sanhedrin, since he is apt to be too severe. The same is true of a man who is sterile, or even childless. A Sanhedrin containing any such member is not validly constituted. Therefore, if a member becomes very old or sexually maimed, he must be replaced.

It is preferable that the members of the Sanhedrin be chosen from people of unbroken descent, as in the case of all positions of authority. It is required, however, that all members of the Sanhedrin be of Jewish parentage...

Every member of the Sanhedrin must be of unblemished family, as was the first Sanhedrin under Moses. Therefore a bastard (mamzer, i.e., the son of an adulterous or incestuous union) is ineligible for membership and renders a Sanhedrin invalid...

It is preferable that the Sanhedrin contain Kohen-priests and Levites as members. It is thus written, "You shall come to the Kohen-priest and Levites, and to the judge who shall be in those days" (Deut. 17:9). Nonetheless, a Sanhedrin is valid even without Kohen-priests and Levites.

Rabbinic Ordination

Every member of the Sanhedrin must be ordained, following a tradition from Moses. It is thus written, "Moses did as God commanded him. He took Joshua... and laid his hands on him, commanding him, as God spoke through Moses" (Numbers 27:22-23). Moses also laid his hands on the other elders, ordaining them as members of the Sanhedrin. These, in turn, ordained others, generation after generation, in an unbroken line of ordination from Moses.

Although Moses ordained the first Sanhedrin with the actual laying of hands, this was a special case, and was only done that one time. All subsequent ordinations were performed orally, granting the subject the title of "Rabbi" and declaring that he is "ordained with the right to judge cases involving fines."

Mt:23:8: But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

Ordination must be conferred by a court of three, containing at least one ordained member. It can be done either in person, or by messenger or letter. A single court can ordain many individuals at once.

Therefore, as long as a single ordained person is alive, the tradition of ordination can remain unbroken. The ordained person can form a court with two unordained men, and ordain as many others as needed. The unordained members of the court, however, could then never be ordained themselves, since that would give them an interest in the case.

Some authorities maintain that ordination must be performed by day. In this respect, it is no different than any other judgment.

Ordination can only be conferred in the Land of Israel. The entire area included in the First Commonwealth is valid for such ordination. Both the ordaining court and the persons being ordained must be within its borders. If a Sanhedrin was ordained in the Holy Land, however, it can then function in other lands as well.

To qualify for ordination, a man must have all the qualifications necessary for membership in the Sanhedrin. However, if he later becomes disqualified from membership in the Sanhedrin because of age or physical disability, his ordination is still valid.

To qualify for ordination, one must be expert in all areas of Torah law. However, now that the Oral Torah has been committed to writing, it is sufficient that one be familiar enough with all the written authorities to render judgment in all cases.

The greatest Torah scholars of each generation are automatically qualified for ordination. It is thus written, "You shall go to the... judge who shall be in those days" (Deut. 17:9). This indicates that each generation has its own standard.

Mt:15:3:

But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?

It is forbidden to appoint a man to the Sanhedrin or any other court if he does not have the necessary qualifications, even if he has other good qualities. To do so is to violate the commandment, "You shall not respect persons in judgment" (Deut. 1:17).

Mk:7:8: For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

On the Temple Mount

The Sanhedrin originally convened in the Temple area, in the Chamber of Cut Stones (Lishkat HaGazit). This was a chamber built into the north wall of the Temple, half inside the sanctuary and half outside, with doors providing access both to the Temple and to the outside.

Mt:24:26:

Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not.

The place where the Sanhedrin convened was actually outside the sanctuary area. The Sanhedrin would sit while in judgment, and it is forbidden to sit within the sanctuary area. On the other hand, part of this chamber had to be inside the sanctuary area, since the Sanhedrin judged many things involving priests and the Temple service, and this had to be done within the Temple grounds. Moreover, questions would often arise during the divine service, when it is forbidden for a Kohen-priest to leave the sanctuary area. There was also a requirement that there be direct access from the Great Altar (mizbeach) to the Sanhedrin.

It was only in this chamber that the Sanhedrin could perform all its functions, including the trial of capital offenses.

However, in the year 3788 (28 CE), when the Sanhedrin relinquished its power to try capital offenses, it moved to another room on the Temple Mount, and then into the city itself. When Jerusalem was destroyed in 3828 (68 CE), the Sanhedrin moved to Yavneh. During the ensuing century, the location of the Sanhedrin alternated between Yavneh and Usha. From there it moved consecutively to Shafar'am, Beth She'arim, Sephoris, and Tiberias. It remained functioning in Tiberias until shortly before the completion of the Talmud.

During the persecutions of Constantinius (4097-4121; 337-361 CE), the Sanhedrin had to go into hiding, and it was eventually disbanded. There is a tradition that it will be in Tiberias that the Sanhedrin will be restored.

The traditional ordination (semicha) was thus abolished in the year 4118 (358 CE). The Sanhedrin and other duly constituted courts cannot be established until this ordination is reinstituted.

Jewish Courts Today

What is called "ordination" today is not true ordination, but rather, a certification that the individual is expert in certain areas of Torah law. Moreover, it implies that he has the permission of his teachers to render public decisions; without such permission it is forbidden.

Such ordination, however, in no way implies competence to serve on the Sanhedrin.

Therefore, no rabbinical court today can judge cases on its own authority. The only authority that such courts have is as agents of the earlier ordained courts. In this capacity, they can only judge commonly occurring cases involving actual loss on the part of the litigants. However, infrequently occurring cases, and those involving punitive damages or fines, require duly ordained judges, and therefore cannot be judged in contemporary rabbinical courts.

Some say that like all other positions of authority, ordination can be established by common consent as well as by unbroken tradition. Therefore, if all the religious leaders and authorities living in the Land of Israel were to agree to ordain a suitable individual, he would be considered duly ordained. He would then have the authority to set up a court and ordain others. Thus, the Sanhedrin and other courts could be restored.

Christian patriarchs were smashed open and their contents desecrated. In the
Greek Orthodox cemetery practically every tomb was smashed. Many graves were
dynamited or ripped open. Fragments of marble crosses, angles' wings and
inscriptions lie inextricably mixed with human skeletons and skulls,
blackened tree stumps, and the remains of rockets and shells.

coffins and remains of the dead all around the cemetery." The Very Reverend
Father Andres, Procurator-General in the Holy Land writing in 1968 of the

Bur'om in Galilee. Its churches and schools were demolished and the
population scattered to various parts of Galilee.
• 16 April 1954 Zionist attack the cemetery of the Greek Catholic Community
in Haifa. Desecration was the point- they danced on the graves; they dug up
the remains destroying many tombs, 73 crosses and 50 statues of angles were

• July 1954 Israeli fundamentalists attack a Christian religious procession
of the Carmelite Fathers and the Christian community of Haifa on Mt. Carmel
near Haifa. The procession was dispersed, many crosses were destroyed and
many Christians were injured.
• 12 July 1954, a Protestant Minister in Tiberias went to a house where some
families of Christian and Jews had gathered. a rabbi provoked Jews to riot
by spreading the rumor that many Jews were to be baptized in that house.
Hundreds of Jews gathered and attacked the house. The police were rushed to
disperse the mob, and it was only the presence of the police which saved the
Protestant Minister from being lynched.
• July 1961 a Christian Fundamentalist missionary group in Jerusalem was
forced to cancel it services when attacked by stone-throwing Jewish
religious fanatics. They chanted "Eichmann! Eichmann!" and began tossing
rocks.
• 10 January 1963 the Finnish Christian Mission School in Jerusalem is
attacked by seventy Jews, mostly Yeshiva students. They smashed windows and
beat Mr. Risto Santala, the school pastor. Further along the street the
plate glass windows of the Zion Mission shop run by Reverend William Hall
were smashed. All of this was the result of an editorial in the Jewish
newspaper Yediot Aharonot of 23 Dec. 1962 which accused the Christian
Mission of converting Jews to Christianity, and calling on Jews to
demonstrate outside the Finnish School.

murdered in his home by Israeli soldiers- without cause according to
witnesses who were also fired upon.

account to the Jewish magazine Haolem Hazeh:
The unit commander told us that it had been decided to blow up three

first bulldozer arrived and pulled down the first house at the edge of the
village. Within ten minutes the house was turned into rubble. The olive
trees and cypresses were all uprooted. After the destruction of the three
houses the first refugee column arrived from the direction of Ramallah. We
told them to go to Beit Sura. They told us that they were driven out
everywhere, forbidden to enter any village, that they were wandering like
this for four days, without food, without water, some dying on the road.
They asked to return to the village, and said we'd better kill them. Some
had a goat, a lamb, a donkey or a camel. A father ground wheat by hand to
feed his four children. On the horizon we could see the next group arriving.
The children cried. Some of our soldiers started to crying too. We went to
fetch them water. We stopped a car with a major, two captains and a woman.
We took a jerrican of water and distributed it to the refugees. We also
handed out cigarettes and candy. More soldiers burst out crying. We asked
the officers why are these refugees sent from one place to another and
driven out everywhere. They told us this was good for them. Let them go.
Moreover, said the officers, why do you care about the Arabs anyway. We
drove them out. they go on wandering in the south like lost cattle. The weak
die. In the evening we found out we had been deceived, for in Beit-Sura too,
bulldozers commenced destruction and they were forbidden to enter. We found
out that not only in our sector was the border straightened out for security
reasons but in all sectors. Our unit was outraged. At night we were ordered
to guard the bulldozers, but the unit was so enraged that no soldier was
willing to carry out such duties. None of us understood how Jews could

church suffers several attacks per year- usually window breaking. The
bookstore also is a favorite target for vandalism. The chapel had recently
been vandalized by a member of the ultra-right Kach movement.
1974 Two American Jewish girls attempt to set fire to the Baptist Church
bookstore.
1975 A grenade damages the Baptist Church. Slogans were painted on the
Church's property- a common practice in these attacks.
1978 Law against missionaries.
8 Oct. 1982 "Unknown persons" set fire to the Baptist Church in Jerusalem
destroying it. The adjacent church library suffered damage also.
23 Dec. 1982 "Unknown persons" drew swastikas on the entrances of two
churches in Jerusalem. They also tried to set the two churches on fire. In
addition to the swastikas the word "OUT" was painted on the entrance of the
Notre Dame Church- the second such desecration.
Dec. 1982 Meir Kahane's Kach group burned to the ground a Baptist church in Jerusalem.
23 May 1983 "Unknown persons" attacked a convent run by German nuns in
Jerusalem. Al-Fajr, a Jerusalem weekly, reported that this was just the
latest incident in a series of many anti-Christian incidents in Jerusalem.
June 1983 The Mother Superior and another nun of the Russian Orthodox Church
were stabbed to death by an American Jew. In mid-month men entered the
church and threatened the nuns. At another Russian Orthodox church, directly
across the street from Jerusalem's main police center, swastikas were
painted on the main entrance.
Nov. 1983 Father Fawzi Khoury of the Fassouta Roman Catholic Church was held
for weeks without charge.
25 Dec. 1983 A fire was started in the Hotel Nitzan in Tiberias on Christmas
Day. Jews claimed that the hotel is a center for missionary activity and
that various Christian sects are offering clothes, jewelry and sneakers to
Jews who would attend missionary lectures. The Jerusalem Post noted the
incident as one of many such actions harassing the group; meetings
interrupted and photos of the participants taken and sometimes published
later in anti-missionary tracts; windows smashed; stones tossed into
meetings; homes of members broken into; and converts are often harassed. The
owners closed the hotel and asked the group to leave. The anti-missionary
group Yad Le' Achim and a local yeshiva, Kolel Yad Rambam, seemed to the
instigators of the attacks.
Dec 1983 Explosives placed outside several Christian and Muslim religious
institutions in Jerusalem injured a number of people.
5 Jan. 1984 "Unknown persons" set fire to the Messianic Assemblies Church in
Jerusalem-- the latest of a number of arsons and bombings against Christian
and Muslim targets. The church's address had been placed on copies of
Biblical literature later distributed in Orthodox Jewish circles. The church
had nothing to do with the literature to which its name had been affixed.
15 Jan. 1984 At the Russian Orthodox convent Ain Karem an Israeli army issue
hand grenade exploded as a nun opened her door. The door was blown to pieces
but the nun eluded death by ducking around a corner just before the grenade
exploded. Israeli police point to the terror group Terror Against Terror
group held responsible for at least 14 such bomb attacks throughout the West
Bank.
Jan. 1984 Plans to build a Christian hotel near Bethlehem were scrapped by
the Jewish municipality which refused to issue a building permit.
After the fire meetings are held in tent like structures.
Their rebuilding plan is approved by Mayor Teddy Kollek but in the fall the
district planning commission decided to allow only the building of a
structure similar to the congregation's original 60 seat chapel built in
1929.
The Church filed suit in Israel's High Court.
Yad Le' Achim organized protests against the rebuilding plans. an unnamed
ultraconservative Orthodox Jewish leader told the Jerusalem Post that his
political party would withdraw from the municipal coalition if approval were
granted.
The High Court in mid 1985 asked the Baptist congregation to leave the area
before it builds a new sanctuary. the court said it would not rule on the
church's suit for two months. The delay is designed to give the congregation
and the Baptist Convention of Israel time to consider trading the church
property for another site in Jerusalem. Lawyers for the church have
recommended that the Baptists move on condition the church's building will
be approved as submitted.
23 Jan. 1985 Ultra-Orthodox Jews protest opposite the Baptist Church against
plans to rebuild the burnt-out church. The signs read: "Get Out," "We don't
want a missionary center here." One demonstrator said: The Church disrupts
the Shabbat peace and lowers the quality of life in our quiet residential
area."
13 Apr. 1985 Members of the Assyrian community (the oldest Christian
community in Jerusalem), led by their archbishop, were walking to their
quarter of the Old City on the occasion of Holy Fire when they were
bombarded with hot water and rocks by a Jewish family from their home. This
was the fifth time an Assyrian procession had been attacked during Christian
holidays. several Assyrian youths ran into the building to search for the
family's apartment. They were met by Jewish residents aiming cocked
submachine guns at them. Israeli police with the procession fired into the
air to prevent the youths from being gunned down. The Jerusalem Post
reported that the attackers were newly converted Orthodox Jews from America.
Israeli police were more interested in ascertaining the identities of the
Assyrian youths who rushed into the building than in those who attacked the
procession. The Jewish neighborhood in the vicinity of the Assyrian convent
is all Assyrian property confiscated after 1967 to build the Jewish quarter.
Aug. 1986 Grenade thrown at an Arab family's house.
Oct. 1986 An Arab school was broken into and racist slogans painted on the
walls.
12 Apr. 1987 "Unknown persons" set fire to St. Savior's Episcopal Church in
Akka. The arsonists also painted racists slogans in Hebrew on the church
walls: "Kahane the Great," "Get Out Christians and Muslims, " and Death to
the Pope." The statement of the church:
"No doubt this event . . . took place in the absence of any deterring force
to stop such racial and undesirable acts. this aggression is an aggression
against spiritual values, against freedom of worship, and against
democracy."
1988 In Gaza, 18-year old Kader Tarazi, on his way to but groceries was
caught in a crowd fleeing Israeli soldiers. He ducked into the house of a
friend but the soldiers dragged him out. While beating him they demanded to
know his religion. when he replied "Christian" the soldiers spread him
cruciform on the hood of a jeep and beat him on the head. Then they drove
him around the streets of Gaza for hours as an example. He died from the
beatings.

Statement of the Heads of the Christian Community in Jerusalem

We, the heads of the Christian communities in the Holy City, have met
together in view of the grave situation prevailing in Jerusalem and the
whole of our country.
It is our Christian conviction that as spiritual leaders we have an urgent
duty to follow up the developments in this situation and to make known to
the world the conditions of life of our people here in the Holy Land.
In Jerusalem, on the West Bank and in Gaza, our people experience in their
daily lives constant deprivation of their fundamental rights because on
arbitrary actions deliberately taken by the authorities. Our people are
often subject to unprovoked harassment and hardship.
We are particularly concerned by the tragic and unnecessary loss of
Palestinian lives, especially among minors. Unarmed and innocent people are
being killed by the unwarranted use of firearms and hundreds are wounded by
the excessive use of force.
We protest against the frequent shooting incidents in the vicinity of Holy
Places.
We also condemn the practice of mass administrative arrests and of
continuing detention of adults and minors without trial.
We further condemn the use of all forms of collective punishment, including
the demolition of homes and depriving whole communities of basic services
such as water and electricity.
We appeal to the world community to support our demand for the reopening of
schools and universities, closed for the past sixteen months, so that
thousands of our children can enjoy again their basic right to education.
We demand that the authorities respect the rights of believers to enjoy free
access to all places of worship on the Holy Days of all religions.
We affirm our human solidarity and sympathy with al who are suffering and
oppressed; we pray for the return of peace based on justice to Jerusalem and
the Holy Land; and we request the international community and the United
Nations Organization to give urgent attention to the plight of the
Palestinian people and to work for a speedy and just resolution of the
Palestinian problem.

22 May 1995 An Israeli soldier sprayed the inside of St. Anthony's church in
Jaffa with automatic weapon fire. Seven people were injured outside the
church in clashes between police and Arab residents. The gunman fired
hundreds of bullets with an M-16 assault weapon and threw several concussion
grenades. When he began firing those inside fled and no one was injured.
However, paintings, statues, pews and walls were heavily damaged or
destroyed.

Christian Symbols Under Attack:

"Dishonoring Christian religious symbols is an old religious duty in
Judaism. Spitting on the cross, and especially on the Crucifix, and spitting
when a Jew passes a church, have been obligatory from around AD 200 for
pious Jews. In the past, when the danger of anti-Semitic hostility was a
real one, the pious Jews were commanded by their rabbis either to spit so
that the reason for doing so would be unknown, or to spit onto their chests,
not actually on the cross or openly before the church. The increasing
strength of the Jewish state has caused these customs to become more open
again but there should be no mistake: The spitting on the cross for converts
from Christianity to Judaism, organized in Kibbutz Sa'ad and financed by the
Israeli government is an act of traditional Jewish piety. It does not cease
to be barbaric, horrifying and wicked because of this! On the contrary, it
is worse because it is so traditional, and much more dangerous as well, just
as the renewed anti-Semitism of the Nazis was dangerous, because in part, it
played on the traditional anti-Semitic past.
This barbarous attitude of contempt and hate for Christian symbols has grown
in Israel. In the 1950s Israel issued a series of stamps representing
pictures of Israeli cities. In the picture of Nazareth, there was a church
and on its top a cross-- almost invisible, perhaps the size of a millimeter.
Nevertheless, the religious parties, supported by many on the Zionist "left"
made a scandal and the stamps were quickly withdrawn and replaced by an
almost identical series from which the microscopic cross was withdrawn.
Then there was the long-drawn-out battle about Christian influence in
elementary arithmetic. Pious Jews object to the international plus sign for
it is a cross, and it may in their opinion, influence little children to
convert to Christianity, Another "explanation" holds: it would then be
difficult to "educate" them to spit on the cross, if they become used to it
in their arithmetic exercises. Until the early 1970s two different sets of
arithmetic books were used in Israel. One for the secular schools, employing
the inverted "T" sign. In the early 70s the religious fanatics "converted"
the Labour Party to the great danger of the cross in arithmetic, and from
that time, in all Hebrew elementary schools (and now many high schools as
well) the international plus sign has been forbidden.
Similar development is visible in other areas of education> Teaching the New
Testament was always forbidden, but in the old times conscientious teachers
of history used to circumvent the prohibition, by organizing seminars or
sending the students to libraries (not the school libraries, of course).
About 10 years ago there was a wave of denouncing such teachers. One in
Jerusalem was almost sacked, for advising her history pupils, who were
studying the history of Jews in Palestine around 30-40 AD, that it would be
a god thing if they would read a few chapters of the New Testament as a
historical aid. She retained her post only after humbly promising not to do
this again.
However, in recent years, anti-Christian feelings are literally exploding in
Israel (and among the Israel-worshipping Jews in Diaspora too) together with
the increase of the Jewish fanaticism in all other areas.
The worse enemies of the truth here, as in many other aspects of the Israel
reality, are the socialist, "liberals," "radicals," etc. in the USA. Imagine
the reaction of the US Liberals, and of such papers as The Nation and New
York Review of Books, not to mention The New York Times if in any state
whatsoever, the government financed spitting on the Star of David? But when
here in Israel, the government finances the spitting on a cross, they are
and will continue to be, quite silent. More than this, they help to finance
it. United States taxpayers, who are of course mostly Christians, are
financing at least half the Israeli budget, one way or another, and
therefore the spitting on the cross too."

1967- The Tourism Ministry begins its policy of granting guide licenses only to Jewish Israelis.
1978- Israeli Government now requires all tour groups to be accompanied by a licensed guide.
Result- The movement and experiences of Christian pilgrims are now closely
controlled by Jewish Israeli guides. These guides use this control to
propagandize subordinating Christian history to Jewish history. Tour groups
stay in West Jerusalem and are advised to stay clear of the Christian
Palestinians of East Jerusalem because they are "terrorists." Denying
Christian Palestinians tour guide licenses also aids in the destabilization
of the Palestinian economy. Guiding pilgrims has been a traditional
occupation among the native Christians in the Holy Land for centuries.

In Arabic Literature:
Gog and Magog, or Yajuj and Majuj among the Arabs, are mentioned in the Koran and by most Arabic geographers as more or less mythical peoples. The chief interest in them centers about two points:
(1) the wall built by Dhu al-Ḳarnain (Alexander the Great) to shut them off from the rest of the world,

Geographically they represent the extreme northeast,

and are placed on the borders of the sea which encircles the earth. Descended from Japheth, son of Noah, they number twenty-four tribes. Six of these are known by name (one being that of the Turks); and the number of each tribe equals that of all the other people in the world. Some say that they belong to the Chazars, who are all Jews (Yaḳut, ii. 440).

They are of small stature, attaining to only one-half the size of a man (another report, in Yaḳut, i. 113, makes them larger). Very ferocious, they have claws instead of nails, teeth like a lion, jaws like a camel, and hair which completely hides the body. Their ears, hairy on one side, are so large that they use one for a bed and the other for a covering. They live principally on fish, which are miraculously provided for them. They resemble animals in their habits; and Mas'udi classes them among the beasts. They used to ravage the country, devouring every green thing; and it was to prevent this that the people living near them begged Alexander to build the wall shutting them in. It is even said that they were cannibals (Baiḍawi).
The wall is generally supposed to have been at Derbent, although in later times it seems to have become confused with the Great Wall of China (Abu al-Fida). The geographers frequently quote an account of it given by Sallam, the interpreter. The calif Wathiḳ Billah had seen the wall destroyed in a dream, and he sent Sallam to investigate. The latter recounts marvelous things of the countries through which he passed on his way thither, and gives a minute description of the wall itself. It was built in a gorge 150 cubits wide, and reached to the top of the mountains. Constructed of iron bricks embedded in molten brass, it had a peculiar red-and-black striped appearance. In it was an immense gate provided with a giant bolt, lock, and key, the last of which was suspended by a chain. Yaḳut remarks on this story that God, who knoweth all things, also knows whether it be true or not, but of the existence of the wall there can be no doubt, since it is mentioned in the sacred book.
As one of the signs of the approaching day of judgment this wall will be broken down and Yajuj and Majuj will appear at Lake Tiberias, the water of which the vanguard of their hosts will entirely consume, so that the rear will pass over on dry ground. They will then proceed, eating every one they meet, even corpses, and every green thing, until they come to Jerusalem. Here, until God shall destroy them, they will annoy Jesus and his faithful companions. It is said that Mohammed gave Yajuj and Majuj an opportunity to embrace Islam on the occasion of his night journey to Jerusalem; but they refused to do so, and consequently are doomed to destruction.

people will live an extremely peaceful life filled with prosperity and abundance. Then the wall which imprisons Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj will break and they will surge forth in large numbers.

Who are the Ya'jooj and Majooj?

Zul Qarnain (A.S.) who was a pious and just Ruler travelled to many lands and conquered them, establishing justice and the Law of Allah therein. Allah Ta'ala provided him with all forms and material strength through which he was able to carry out his conquests and missions.

He once carried out a mission in three directions, the far west, the far east, and then in a northerly direction. It was here that he came across a tribe of people who complained to him about the tribes of Ya'jooj and Majooj which inhabited the land behind two huge mountains and often emerged from behind these mountains to perpetrate acts of anarchy and plunder among them. They requested Zul Qarnain (A.S.) to erect a barrier between themselves and the tribes of Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj so that they could be saved from their atrocities. With the material strength at his disposal, Zul Qarnain (A.S.) enlisted their physical labor and set about erecting a high wall between the two mountains. The height of the wall or its exact length is unknown. What is known is that the height of this wall reaches that of the summit of both mountains. It is made with blocks or sheets of iron, which is further strengthened by molten lead. In this manner Ya'jooj and Majooj are unable to scale the wall, or cross it, except when it is the will of Allah.

"And when the promise of my Rabb approaces, He will level it to dust" (Quran 18:98)

They are situated in a land of ice which is hidden from our gazes and the exact location of which is unknown. Though many interpretations do exist in this respect, none of these can be said to absolute.

Ya'jooj and Majooj are human beings and according to a narration they are from the progeny of Yafith ibn Nooh (A.S.).

Some Ahadith...

In a lengthy hadith by Hadhrat Nawwas ibn Sam'aan (R.A.) Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) is reported to have said:

"...Allah will send revelation upon Eesa (A.S.) that 'Such a creation of mine is now going to emerge that no power will be able to stop them. Therefore take my servants and ascend the Mount of Toor.' Then Ya'jooj and Majooj will emerge and surge forth in all their fury. When those from among them who constitute the former part of their army pass the lake of Tiberias (which is in northern Palestine), they will drink up all the water of that lake and by the time those that constitute the latter part of that same army pass the lake, they will say, "There used to be water here (long ago). When they reach the Mount of Khamr in Jerusalem, they will arrogantly proclaim: 'We have conquered the people of the earth, now we will annihilate those in the sky.' So saying they will fire their arrows towards the sky. When the arrows return to the ground they will be blood stained.

In the meantime, Eesa (A.S.) will be on the Mount of Toor with his followers.

Jesus and his saints

At that time the head of and ox will be as valuable as is a hundred dinars to you in this day. [This indicates the scarcity of provisions]. Faced with these hardships, Eesa (A.S.) and his followers will make dua unto Allah (to remove this calamity). As a result, Allah will cause sores to appear on the necks of each and every individual of these people which will cause their death suddenly. When Eesa (A.S.) and his followers descend from the Mount of Toor there will not be a single space on the land where the dead rotting bodies of these people is not littered, giving off a horrendous odour. Eesa (A.S.) and his followers will once more supplicate unto Allah as a result of which Allah will send down huge birds whose necks will be as thick as that of the necks of camels, and they will dump these bodies in a place where Allah wills. (According to a narration by Tirmidhi, they will be dumped at a place called Nahbal).

Allah Ta'ala will then send down a heavy rain, the waters of which will flow in every part of the earth cleansing it thoroughly. It will rain for a period of forty days.

The Muslims will then burn the bows and arrows of the Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj for a period of seven years.

Allah will order the earth to yield forth its crops in abundance and there will be such blessing and prosperity that one pomegranate will be sufficient for a whole group while the peel thereof will suffice to cast a shadow over them. The milk of one camel will be sufficient for many groups while one milk giving cow will be sufficient for a whole tribe. One milk giving goat will be sufficent for a whole family..."

Hadhrat Abu Saeed Khudri (R.A.) narrates that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

"On the day of Qiyamah Allah will say to Adam (A.S.) to pick out the Jahannamis from his entire progeny. Adam (A.S.) will ask: 'O Rabb, who are they?'

Allah will say: 'Nine hundred and ninety nine of a thousand are Jahannami while the one is a Jannati.'

On hearing this the Sahaba were overtaken by fear and they asked "O Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam), who will that one Janniti be?'

Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said: 'Do not grieve, the nine hundred and ninety nine will be Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj while you will be the Jannati."' (i.e. your numbers in relation to them will be one in a thousand).

Hadhrat Abdullah ibn Umar (R.A.) says that Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) said:

"Allah Ta'ala divided mankind into ten parts. Nine tenths constitute Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj while the remaining tenths constitutues the rest of mankind."

Hadhrat Zainab bint Jahsh (R.A.) says: "...once Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam) awoke from such a sleep that his face was red and these words were on his tongue: 'There is none worthy of worship except Allah. Destruction is upon the Arabs on account of the evil which has come close to them. Today a hole as big as this has opened up in the wall of Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj.' ..and Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) indicated the size of the hole forming a ring with his index finger and thumb."

Hadhrat Abu Hurairah (R.A.) narrates that every day Ya'jooj and Ma'jooj break (dig) through the wall erected by Zul Qarnain (A.S.) until they reach the end of it to that extent that they can actually see the light on the other side. They then return (home) saying that 'We will break through tomorrow.' But Allah Ta'ala causes the wall to revert to its original thickness and the next day they start digging through the wall all over again, and this process continues each day until as long as Allah wills them to remain imprisoned. When Allah wishes them to be released, then at the end of the day they will say, "If Allah wills, tomorrow we will break through." The following day they will find the wall as they had left it the previous day (i.e. it will not have returned to its orginal state) and after breaking the remaining part of it they will emerge."

Commenting on the above hadith, Allamah Ibn Arabi says, Three miracles are evident in this Hadith:

1.) It never occurs to these tribes that they must continue work during the night. After all, they are in such large numbers that they can easily delegate the work among themselves and work in shifts. But Allah does not allow this thought to occur to them.

2.) It never occurs to them that they can merely cross the mountains or scale the wall, which they can do through the aid of equipment and implements which they possess in large numbers. According to a narration by Wahab ibn Munabbah it is known that these tribes are agriculturists and artisians possessing various types of equipment.

3.) The thought of saying "If Allah wills" never enters their minds and it will only occur to them to say it when Allah wills that they be released.

Yeshu was taken prisoner to the synagogue of Tiberias, and they bound him to a pillar. To allay his thirst they gave him vinegar to drink. On his head they set a crown of thorns. There was strife and wrangling between the elders and the unrestrained followers of Yeshu, as a result of which the followers escaped with Yeshu to the region of Antioch[7]; there Yeshu remained until the eve of the Passover.

Toledoth Yeshu

In the year 3671 [in Jewish reckonging, it being ca 90 B.C.] in the days of King Jannaeus, a great misfortune befell Israel, when there arose a certain disreputable man of the tribe of Judah, whose name was Joseph Pandera. He lived at Bethlehem, in Judah.

Near his house dwelt a widow and her lovely and chaste daughter named Miriam. Miriam was betrothed to Yohanan, of the royal house of David, a man learned in the Torah and God-fearing.

At the close of a certain Sabbath, Joseph Pandera, attractive and like a warrior in appearance, having gazed lustfully upon Miriam, knocked upon the door of her room and betrayed her by pretending that he was her betrothed husband, Yohanan. Even so, she was amazed at this improper conduct and submitted only against her will.

Thereafter, when Yohanan came to her, Miriam expressed astonishment at behavior so foreign to his character. It was thus that they both came to know the crime of Joseph Pandera and the terrible mistake on the part of Miriam. Whereupon Yohanan went to Rabban Shimeon ben Shetah and related to him the tragic seduction. Lacking witnesses required for the punishment of Joseph Pandera, and Miriam being with child, Yohanan left for Babylonia.

Miriam gave birth to a son and named him Yehoshua, after her brother. This name later deteriorated to Yeshu ["Yeshu" is the Jewish "name" for Jesus. It means "May His Name Be Blotted Out"]. On the eighth day he was circumcised. When he was old enough the lad was taken by Miriam to the house of study to be instructed in the Jewish tradition.

One day Yeshu walked in front of the Sages with his head uncovered, showing shameful disrespect. At this, the discussion arose as to whether this behavior did not truly indicate that Yeshu was an illegitimate child and the son of a niddah. Moreover, the story tells that while the rabbis were discussing the Tractate Nezikin, he gave his own impudent interpretation of the law and in an ensuing debate he held that Moses could not be the greatest of the prophets if he had to receive counsel from Jethro. This led to further inquiry as to the antecedents of Yeshu, and it was discovered through Rabban Shimeon ben Shetah that he was the illegitimate son of Joseph Pandera. Miriam admitted it. After this became known, it was necessary for Yeshu to flee to Upper Galilee.

After King Jannaeus, his wife Helene ruled over all Israel. In the Temple was to be found the Foundation Stone on which were engraven the letters of God's Ineffable Name. Whoever learned the secret of the Name and its use would be able to do whatever he wished. Therefore, the Sages took measures so that no one should gain this knowledge. Lions of brass were bound to two iron pillars at the gate of the place of burnt offerings. Should anyone enter and learn the Name, when he left the lions would roar at him and immediately the valuable secret would be forgotten.

Yeshu came and learned the letters of the Name; he wrote them upon the parchment which he placed in an open cut on his thigh and then drew the flesh over the parchment. As he left, the lions roared and he forgot the secret. But when he came to his house he reopened the cut in his flesh with a knife an lifted out the writing. Then he remembered and obtained the use of the letters.

He gathered about himself three hundred and ten young men of Israel and accused those who spoke ill of his birth of being people who desired greatness and power for themselves. Yeshu proclaimed, "I am the Messiah; and concerning me Isaiah prophesied and said, 'Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.'" He quoted other messianic texts, insisting, "David my ancestor prophesied concerning me: 'The Lord said to me, thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee.'"

The insurgents with him replied that if Yeshu was the Messiah he should give them a convincing sign. They therefore, brought to him a lame man, who had never walked. Yeshu spoke over the man the letters of the Ineffable Name, and the leper was healed. Thereupon, they worshipped him as the Messiah, Son of the Highest.

When word of these happenings came to Jerusalem, the Sanhedrin decided to bring about the capture of Yeshu. They sent messengers, Annanui and Ahaziah, who, pretending to be his disciples, said that they brought him an invitation from the leaders of Jerusalem to visit them. Yeshu consented on condition the members of the Sanhedrin receive him as a lord. He started out toward Jerusalem and, arriving at Knob, acquired an ass on which he rode into Jerusalem, as a fulfillment of the prophecy of Zechariah.

The Sages bound him and led him before Queen Helene, with the accusation: "This man is a sorcerer and entices everyone." Yeshu replied, "The prophets long ago prophesied my coming: 'And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse,' and I am he; but as for them, Scripture says 'Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly.'"

Queen Helene asked the Sages: "What he says, is it in your Torah?" They replied: "It is in our Torah, but it is not applicable to him, for it is in Scripture: 'And that prophet which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.' He has not fulfilled the signs and conditions of the Messiah."

Yeshu spoke up: "Madam, I am the Messiah and I revive the dead." A dead body was brought in; he pronounced the letters of the Ineffable Name and the corpse came to life. The Queen was greatly moved and said: "This is a true sign." She reprimanded the Sages and sent them humiliated from her presence. Yeshu's dissident followers increased and there was controversy in Israel.

Yeshu went to Upper Galilee. the Sages came before the Queen, complaining that Yeshu practiced sorcery and was leading everyone astray. Therefore she sent Annanui and Ahaziah to fetch him.

The found him in Upper Galilee, proclaiming himself the Son of God. When they tried to take him there was a struggle, but Yeshu said to the men of Upper Galilee: "Wage no battle." He would prove himself by the power which came to him from his Father in heaven. He spoke the Ineffable Name over the birds of clay and they flew into the air. He spoke the same letters over a millstone that had been placed upon the waters. He sat in it and it floated like a boat. When they saw this the people marveled. At the behest of Yeshu, the emissaries departed and reported these wonders to the Queen. She trembled with astonishment.

Then the Sages selected a man named Judah Iskarioto and brought him to the Sanctuary where he learned the letters of the Ineffable Name as Yeshu had done.

When Yeshu was summoned before the queen, this time there were present also the Sages and Judah Iskarioto. Yeshu said: "It is spoken of me, 'I will ascend into heaven.'" He lifted his arms like the wings of an eagle and he flew between heaven and earth, to the amazement of everyone.

The elders asked Iskarioto to do likewise. He did, and flew toward heaven. Iskarioto attempted to force Yeshu down to earth but neither one of the two could prevail against the other for both had the use of the Ineffable Name. However, Iskarioto defiled Yeshu, so that they both lost their power and fell down to the earth, and in their condition of defilement the letters of the Ineffable Name escaped from them. Because of this deed of Judah they weep on the eve of the birth of Yeshu.

Yeshu was seized. His head was covered with a garment and he was smitten with pomegranate staves; but he could do nothing, for he no longer had the Ineffable Name.

Yeshu then resolved to go the Temple to acquire again the secret of the Name. That year the Passover came on a Sabbath day. On the eve of the Passover, Yeshu, accompanied by his disciples, came to Jerusalem riding upon an ass. Many bowed down before him. He entered the Temple with his three hundred and ten followers. One of them, Judah Iskarioto apprised the Sages that Yeshu was to be found in the Temple, that the disciples had taken a vow by the Ten Commandments not to reveal his identity but that he would point him out by bowing to him. So it was done and Yeshu was seized. Asked his name, he replied to the question by several times giving the names Mattai, Nakki, Buni, Netzer, each time with a verse quoted by him and a counter-verse by the Sages.

Yeshu was put to death on the sixth hour on the eve of the Passover and of the Sabbath. When they tried to hang him on a tree it broke, for when he had possessed the power he had pronounced by the Ineffable Name that no tree should hold him. He had failed to pronounce the prohibition over the carob-stalk, for it was a plant more than a tree, and on it he was hanged until the hour for afternoon prayer, for it is written in Scripture, "His body shall not remain all night upon the tree." They buried him outside the city.

On the first day of the week his bold followers came to Queen Helene with the report that he who was slain was truly the Messiah and that he was not in his grave; he had ascended to heaven as he prophesied. Diligent search was made and he was not found in the grave where he had been buried. A gardener had taken him from the grave and had brought him into his garden and buried him in the sand over which the waters flowed into the garden.

Queen Helene demanded, on threat of a severe penalty, that the body of Yeshu be shown to her within a period of three days. There was a great distress. When the keeper of the garden saw Rabbi Tanhuma walking in the field and lamenting over the ultimatum of the Queen, the gardener related what he had done, in order that Yeshu's followers should not steal the body and then claim that he had ascended into heaven. The Sages removed the body, tied it to the tail of a horse and transported it to the Queen, with the words, "This is Yeshu who is said to have ascended to heaven." Realizing that Yeshu was a false prophet who enticed the people and led them astray, she mocked the followers but praised the Sages.

The disciples went out among the nations--three went to the mountains of Ararat, three to Armenia, three to Rome and three to the kingdoms buy the sea, They deluded the people, but ultimately they were slain.

The erring followers amongst Israel said: "You have slain the Messiah of the Lord." The Israelites answered: "You have believed in a false prophet." There was endless strife and discord for thirty years.

The Sages desired to separate from Israel those who continued to claim Yeshu as the Messiah, and they called upon a greatly learned man, Simeon Kepha, for help. Simeon went to Antioch, main city of the Nazarenes and proclaimed to them: "I am the disciple of Yeshu. He has sent me to show you the way. I will give you a sign as Yeshu has done."

Simeon, having gained the secret of the Ineffable Name, healed a leper and a lame man by means of it and thus found acceptance as a true disciple. He told them that Yeshu was in heaven, at the right hand of his Father, in fulfillment of Psalm 110:1. He added that Yeshu desired that they separate themselves from the Jews and no longer follow their practices, as Isaiah had said, "Your new moons and your feasts my soul abhorreth." They were now to observe the first day of the week instead of the seventh, the Resurrection instead of the Passover, the Ascension into Heaven instead of the Feast of Weeks, the finding of the Cross instead of the New Year, the Feast of the Circumcision instead of the Day of Atonement, the New Year instead of Chanukah; they were to be indifferent with regard to circumcision and the dietary laws. Also they were to follow the teaching of turning the right if smitten on the left and the meek acceptance of suffering. All these new ordinances which Simeon Kepha (or Paul, as he was known to the Nazarenes) taught them were really meant to separate these Nazarenes from the people of Israel and to bring the internal strife to an end.
