Israeli war planes carried out at least 50 raids across Lebanon on Thursday, including on Beirut airport, a day after the killing of eight Israeli soldiers and the capture of two by Hezbollah guerrillas.

Bush, speaking on a visit to Germany, also urged Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad to help pressure Hezbollah to release the Israeli soldiers, adding: "Syria needs to be held to account."

In the

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, at a joint press conference with Bush, called for a "de-escalation", stressing the starting point had been the capture of the Israeli soldiers.

"The attacks did not start from the Israeli side, but from Hezbollah's side," she said.

At least 39 civilians have been killed since Israel began pounding Lebanon from the land, sea and air. Hezbollah retaliated by firing off a barrage of rockets. One Israeli woman was killed.

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas has warned of the risk of a "regional war" in the Middle East amid the twin Israeli offensives on southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

Russia, France, Britain and Italy criticised Israel for its "disproportionate" use of force.

Moscow, a member of the diplomatic quartet on Middle East peace, also warned against the region slipping back into war.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted by the Interfax news agency as warning of a "very dramatic and tragic" outcome to the Middle East violence.

Moscow condemned the abduction of Israeli soldiers by Palestinian militants and Lebanon's Hezbollah. "All forms of terrorism are completely unacceptable," a foreign ministry statement said, calling for the "immediate and unconditional release" of the soldiers.

"All sides involved in the current events should take rapid measures to stop the region sliding into open conflict."

But Moscow also turned its criticism on Israeli action in Gaza.

"One cannot justify the continued destruction by Israel of the civilian infrastructure in Lebanon and in Palestinian territory, involving the disproportionate use of force in which the civilian population suffers," the Russian foreign ministry said.

In Paris, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy described the Israeli army strikes on Lebanon as a "disproportionate act of war", warning one consequence could be to plunge Lebanon "back into the worst years of war".

France's defence minister also stressed that the situation could have repercussions at both the local level and for the world. "That goes much further since what happens in the Middle East serves as a pretext for terrorism too," Michele Alliot-Marie said on France Inter.

British Prime Minister

"We call for restraint on all sides," he added, "because in the end, this (the broader Middle East question) is going to have to be solved by negotiations."

Also Thursday, Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema said Rome had "the impression that this is a disproportionate and dangerous reaction in view of the consequences it could have," ANSA reported.

Greece called on Israel to avoid the use of "inordinate" and "pointless" violence in Lebanon, and on the Lebanese movement Hezbollah to release two Israeli soldiers.

Israel, Lebanon trade fire

Two Israeli civilians and at least 52 Lebanese died in cross-border barrages.

Responding to the killing of eight soldiers and the abduction of two more by Hezbollah gunmen in a frontier ambush Wednesday, Israel shelled Lebanese infrastructure from the air, land and sea Thursday. Lebanese officials said at least 52 civilians were killed, but Israeli sources described many of the casualties as Hezbollah combatants.

Israeli warplanes bombed the runways of Beirut International Airport, forcing Lebanon-bound flights to be rerouted to Cyprus, as well as Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV station, though it continued to operate. Israel also imposed a naval blockade of Lebanese ports.

A Hezbollah strike on the Israeli border town of Nahariya killed one woman and wounded at least 25 other people; another woman died in a strike on Safed. In all, some 70 Israelis were wounded by the barrage of rockets in the north, the Jerusalem Post reported. Israel ordered residents of most communities in the northern Galilee to enter bomb shelters.

At least 90 wounded in rocket attacks; second woman dies

Katyusha rockets landed in the northern Israeli towns of Karmiel, Hatzor, and Majd el-Kurum, as well as several other communities, throughout the north on Thursday afternoon.

At least 28 people were wounded in Majd el-Kurum - two moderately and seven from shrapnel. Others were lightly wounded and suffering from shock.

At least 90 Israelis have been wounded since the onset of Operation Just Reward Wednesday afternoon.

Residents of Safed, Rosh Pina Hatzor and Karmiel were ordered to enter bomb shelters and fortified rooms on Thursday afternoon, as other residents of the north were ordered to do earlier.

The calls came after Katyushas fell in Safed's immigration center, old marketplace, Safed College and the Amit Center.

Some 21 Safed residents were wounded. At least two people were wounded at the immigration center. Two people were seriously wounded from shrapnel, while some were lightly wounded, and many more were in shock.

MDA teams were treating the wounded at the scene and evacuating in ambulances to the city's Ziv Hospital (telephone 1255161, 04-6828621 for the hearing impaired).

A 70-year-old Safed woman died of her wounds after arriving at the hospital, raising the civilian death toll to two.

Hospitals throughout the North were ordered to raise their readiness level to Level Three, the second highest possible. Medical teams were being ordered to remain at their posts in expectation of continued Katyusha strikes.

Earlier, on Thursday morning, one woman was killed and 29 were wounded - one seriously - when four Hizbullah-fired Katyusha rockets landed in central Nahariya. The woman was killed while sitting on her fifth-floor balcony. A rocket hit a floor above, cut through the ceiling and killed her.

Katyusha missiles slammed into the holy city of Tzfat Thursday afternoon, striking a college, mortally injuring one and wounding close to 20. Hizbullah: If Beirut is hit, Haifa will be next.

Seven 122mm Katyusha rockets struck Tzfat (Safed) around 3 PM Wednesday. One landed near a bus stop, one near an absorption center and the others in populated areas as well. At least 20 people are being treated for wounds. A 70-year-old woman was critically wounded, and another person remains in serious condition. The rest suffered light injuries from shrapnel and shock.

A rocket also struck the Arab village of Majd al-Krum near Carmiel this afternoon. Majd al-Krum has seen arrests and investigations due to widespread support for Hamas and Syria in the village. The Hizbullah-fired missiled injured five residents, including two in moderate condition.

The fresh barrage of rockets came just hours after a wave of Katyushas struck a home in the coastal city of Nahariya, killing a Jewish woman and wounding 29 others, including several children. In total, more than 70 rockets have been fired on northern Israeli towns in the past 24 hours.

The Tzfat College, which was hit by one of the missiles, organized drills over the past two weeks, accustoming students to enter the local bomb shelters when necessary. The shelter itself, which doubles as the school’s library, was struck head-on by a missile – but was empty because students had been sent home just two hours earlier due to the war situation.

In another providential development, the three-day klezmer music festival, which saw Tzfat packed with tens of thousands of visitors, also came to a close less than 40 hours prior to the attack.

Avraham, a caller to IsraelNationalRadio, said he was sitting in his bomb shelter in Tzfat and refused to leave the holy city, despite offers from his son to pick him up and bring him out of range of the rocket fire. "I left New York for Tzfat because G-d told us this is where we are supposed to live," he said. "I am not going to leave because of some missiles."

Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah, responding to reports that the IDF is preparing to strike south of Beirut, said such a move would result in Hizbullah firing even longer-range missiles at the port-city of Haifa.

Asked earlier about the liklihood of such a scenario, Dr. Dan Shiftan of the National Security Studies Center at the University of Haifa said, "I estimate that this is indeed a realistic scenario."

Dr. Shiftan added that Hizbullah's plans to strike Haifa existed from the get-go and had nothing to do with the scope of IDF raids in Lebanon. "A clear-cut connection exists between the authorities in the Gaza Strip and the two additional kidnappings of Israeli soldiers in South Lebanon," he said. "We aren't speaking about a one-time incident. This is an extensive military confrontation that in the final analysis will determine the rules of the game between Israel and elements at war with her, for example, in Lebanon and Syria."

Day of Fasting Marked by War in Israel

Jews around the world mark the beginning of a three-week commemoration of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Holy Temples with a day of fasting today.

The "Three Weeks" begin on the 17th of Tammuz, and end on the 9th of Av - both of which are days of fasting, according to Jewish Law and custom. Both Holy Temples were destroyed on the 9th of Av, some 2000 and 2500 years ago, respectively.

The 17th of Tammuz is a day of mourning because it marks the day the Romans broke down Jerusalem's walls, shortly before they laid waste to the city. In addition, it was the day that:
* Moses broke the tablets at Mount Sinai following the sin of the Golden Calf;
* the Priests were forced to suspend the First Temple's daily offerings, for lack of lambs;
* at some point during the Second Temple, a Roman general named Apustamos burned a Torah scroll;
* and an idolatrous image was brazenly placed in the Holy Temple.

"The purpose of a fast day," writes Rabbi Shraga Simmons for Aish HaTorah , "is to awaken our sense of loss over the destroyed Temple - and the subsequent Jewish journey into exile." Eating and drinking is not permitted until evening today, while some of the laws of mourning - such as no joyous public events or haircuts - are observed with increasing severity as the Three Weeks proceed.

Special prayers known as S'lichot are recited on the Fast of the 17 of Tammuz; on Tisha B'Av, they are known as Kinot and are much more numerous. Most of today's S'lichot recall the suffering of the Jewish People during the First Temple periods of conquest and destruction. Some of the passages have taken on timely significance in light of the latest war forced upon Israel:

"I was ill and trembling when... the viper of the north overran me...

"Rebuild the Temple, and bring us back within the borders of Carmel and Bashan, open Your eyes and take vengeance... Judge the cause of the mute, so that the destroyer shall pay for the day when the enemy prevailed and the city was breached...

"We rebelled against Him Who dwells in Heaven, therefore we were scattered in all directions, and our dancing was turned into lamentations.

"Let truth and peace cause the Fasts to be erased and turned into days of joy and gladness and festive occasions."

IAF warplanes bomb two Lebanese military bases

Israel imposes sea and air blockade on Lebanon

Israel Air Force warplanes blasted runways at the main Lebanese army air base in eastern Lebanon near Syria's border Thursday evening, Lebanese police said.

Jets dropped two bombs on the runway at the Rayak air base in the eastern Bekaa Valley, damaging it, police said. There were no reports of casualties. Rayak, 50 kilometers east of Beirut and about seven kilometers west of the Syrian border, is home to the country's main military air base and is military headquarters in eastern Lebanon.

Shortly afterward, the IAF also bombed the small military airport of Qulayaat in northern Lebanon, security sources and witnesses said

It was the third airport to be hit by Israel on Thursday, cutting off all of Lebanon's civilian and military air access.

These were the first IAF strikes on the Lebanese army in Israel's fight with Hezbollah guerrillas.

Israel threatens to hit Beirut neighborhood
Israel threatened Thursday to strike at Hezbollah offices in a residential area of Beirut in response to scores of Katyusha attacks on population centers inside Israel. An Israeli woman was killed and dozens were wounded across Israel's north in the Hezbollah shellings.

At least 52 Lebanese have been killed in IAF retaliatory air strikes.

IAF jets Thursday morning carried out flybys over the area of Beirut, which is home to senior members of Hezbollah, as well as some of its supporters.

In response, Hezbollah said that it would target the major northern port city of Haifa.

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that several rockets landed some 15 kilometers south of the border with Lebanon on Thursday morning, signaling that Hezbollah is becoming increasingly successful in expanding the reach of the crude projectiles. This is the furthest that Hezbollah rockets have managed to penetrate inside Israel.

A senior Israel Defense Forces officer said Thursday that Hezbollah has missiles that could reach the cities of Haifa and Tiberias.

Brigadier General Yossi Baidatz, the commander of the research arm of military intelligence, told a parliamentary committee Thursday that Hezbollah had about 100 missiles with a range of between 40 kilometers (25 miles) and 70 kilometers (44 miles), a participant in the meeting said. That would put the cities of Haifa and Tiberias within range.

Hezbollah also has thousands of Katyusha rockets that have a range of about 20 kilometers (12 miles), Baidatz said, according to the participant, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the meeting was closed.

The government is working on the assumption that Hezbollah will use rockets with a longer range than they have previously had to strike civilians areas in Israel. Should that happen, the IDF will then consider sending ground troops into Lebanon.

The IAF is prepared to strike anywhere in Lebanon, including the capital of Beirut, if the Lebanese government fails to rein in Hezbollah guerrillas, IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz said Thursday.

Halutz noted that all senior Hezbollah leaders live and have offices in the southern Beirut neighborhood of Dahiya. He said Beirut could be included among the targets if Hezbollah rockets continue to hit northern Israel. "Nothing is safe [in Lebanon], as simple as that," he said.

He said the residents of Dahiya should understand the situation and draw the proper conclusions if concerned about their safety.

"We are not at war, but we are in a very high volume crisis, and we have an intention to put an end to the situation here along the northern border," Halutz told reporters Thursday.

"We are taking the Lebanese government as the one who is carrying all the responsibility on its shoulders regarding this area and regarding the future of Lebanon," said Halutz.

"The Lebanese government needs to understand that there is a price for its inaction. They need to understand that if they are not able to deal with terror, we will have no choice but to fight with them," he added.

The IDF began preparing Wednesday night for a widespread aerial assault on Lebanon, after the cabinet approved a "severe" response to the Hezbollah attack on the northern border earlier in the day, which ended with eight soldiers dead and two kidnapped.

Defense Minister Amir Peretz said following the late-night meeting that Israel would not allow Hezbollah return to its positions along Lebanon's border with Israel.

"Beirut is paying the price for its small-minded attitude that has lasted for years," Peretz said during a special meeting of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee in Tel Aviv on Thursday morning.

In southern Lebanon, at least 36 civilians were reported killed in overnight IAF attacks, including a family of 10 and another family of seven in the village of Dweir, Lebanese officials said.

Defense officials said Thursday that Israel intended to impose a sea and air blockade on Lebanon. Overnight, the IAF struck Beirut International Airport, and Thursday morning naval vessels entered Lebanese territorial waters and blocked access to the country's ports.

"Since this morning Israeli naval vessels have enforced a full naval closure on Lebanon, because Lebanon's ports are used to transfer both terrorists and weapons to the terror organizations operating in Lebanon," an IDF spokesman said.

The airport, in the suburbs of Beirut, was forced to close when a shell crashed shortly on the eastern runway after 6 A.M., airport employees said. Another impact was heard shortly afterward.

A senior airport official announced the facility had been closed and diverted scheduled flights to Cyprus. Cyprus's Larnaca airport is one of the closest to Beirut, with an estimated 25 minutes flight time.

The IDF confirmed it had struck Beirut airport, saying the facility is "a central hub for the transfer of weapons and supplies to the Hezbollah terrorist organization

EU accuses Israel of 'disproportionate use of force' in Lebanon

BRUSSELS, Belgium - The European Union on Thursday criticized Israel for using what it called "disproportionate" force in its attacks on Lebanon following Wednesday's raid by Hezbollah guerillas who killed eight Israel Defense Forces soldier and abducted two soldiers.

"The European Union is greatly concerned about the disproportionate use of force by Israel in Lebanon in response to attacks by Hezbollah on Israel," according to a statement issued by Finland which holds the EU's rotating presidency. "The presidency deplores the loss of civilian lives and the destruction of civilian infrastructure. The imposition of an air and sea blockade on Lebanon cannot be justified."

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan is sending a three-person team to the Middle East to urge all parties to exercise restraint and help defuse the crisis in the region, a spokesman said on Thursday.

Earlier in the day, U.S. President George W. Bush said that Israel had a right to defend itself against terrorist acts but it should not weaken the Beirut government.

"Israel has the right to defend herself," Bush told a news conference after a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"Secondly, whatever Israel does should not weaken the...government in Lebanon."

The president's comment came in response to the escalating violence between Israel and Lebanon, on Thursday after IAF warplanes carried out strikes in Lebanon in retalliation to Hezbollah's abduction of two soldiers a day earlier.

On Thursday, a U.S. administration official gave a response on condition of anonymity regarding the crisis.

"We are urging restraint on both sides, recognizing Israel's right to defend itself," the official said.

The European Union on Thursday called on all sides to halt the renewed violence in the Middle East and take care to avoid more civilian casualties.

"I've always felt that Israel has a right to ensure its security but I've also said that disproportionate attacks are not useful," EU Development
Commissioner Louis Michel told reporters.

"I regret the fact that the reaction was disproportionate."

EU spokeswoman Emma Udwin said EU foreign ministers could discuss on Monday whether the IDF attacks on Lebanon were compatible with the bloc's trade and cooperation agreement with Israel, which is conditional on respect for international law.

She stressed, however, that the EU recognized "Israel's right to defend
itself." Israel's military action came after a cross-border raid by Hezbollah guerillas in which two Israeli soldiers were captured and several others were killed.

Greece on Thursday expressed "serious concern" over Israel's attacks on Lebanon, and urged neighboring countries to show restraint.

Government spokesman Evangelos Antonaros also urged the militant group Hezbollah to release Israeli soldiers held hostage.

"Greece expresses its serious concern and is intensely troubled," Antonaros said.

"It is vital, to stop the (situation) worsening, Hezbollah must immediately release the soldiers taken hostage," he said. "At the same time, Greece calls on the government of Israel to avoid the use of excessive and pointless force which cannot provide a solution to the problem."

Greece has traditionally close ties with Arab countries but has also recently improved relations with Israel.

Meanwhile, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said on Thursday that Israel's strikes in Lebanon, including the bombardment of Beirut airport, were "a disproportionate act of war."

"For several hours, there has been a bombardment of an airport of an entirely sovereign country, a friend of France ... this is a disproportionate act of war," Douste-Blazy told Europe 1 radio station.

Douste-Blazy also condemned Hezbollah's firing of rockets into northern Israel and the kidnapping of the soldiers, saying these were "irresponsible acts."

"The only solution is a return to reason by both sides," he said. "We are calling for a lowering of tensions," he said.

France supported "Lebanon's demand for a referral to the United Nations Security Council as soon as possible", he said, adding the risk of a regional war "absolutely" existed.

Russian Foreign Minister Mikhail Kamynin condemned both Israel's strikes and Hezbollah's abduction of IDF soldiers in a strongly worded statement released on Thursday.

"The continued destruction of civilian infrastructure in Lebanon and the Palestinian territories and the disproportionate use of force by Israel, which causes suffering to the civilian population, can be neither understood nor justified," he said.

"Equally unacceptable are any manifestations of terrorism and the taking of hostages, who must be released immediately and unconditionally," he said.

Spain on Thursday condemned the kidnapping of the soldiers, and called on the IDF to use restraint in its retaliation.

"The Spanish government, very worried about these grave incidents, demands an end to the armed aggression against Israel and the immediate liberation of the kidnapped soldiers," the Spanish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It also called on "Israel to act with moderation and in proportion to these events given the need to avoid a spreading of violence, which would put the stability of the region in danger and would have as its principal victim, once again, the civilian population."

Air Sinai cancels flight to Tel Aviv
Air Sinai, the only Egyptian airline which flies to Israel, canceled its flight to Tel Aviv on Thursday morning after Israel launched attacks in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip.

The flight was due to take off at 9.45 a.m. with 50 passengers but the airline sent them home at the last minute, airport sources said.

A manager at Air Sinai, a wholly-owned subsidiary of state carrier EgyptAir, said the decision to cancel the flight came as a surprise. He said he was looking into the reason for the closure.

EgyptAir and the Lebanese airline Middle East Airways also canceled their flights between Cairo and Beirut on Thursday because of the Israel Defense Forces attack on Beirut's only international airport.

Northern escalation / Syria: a possible third front

Two weeks after the start of the IDF's extensive operation in the Gaza Strip, Hezbollah opened a second front on the northern border. The second front, which could expand into Israel, started just as the first did - with the abduction of soldiers from inside Israel and the deaths of others.

Israel faces the danger of a third front if Syria steps in to assist Hezbollah. Strategically, Israel faces an extreme foursome: Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria and Iran. Two extremist Islamic organizations considered terror organizations, and two states Washington names in the Axis of Evil.

Israel has no choice but to hold Lebanon responsible for what happens in its borders and for what comes out of it. Lebanon will likely wail as Israel strikes inside its territory and hits its infrastructure, but the Lebanese government must see itself as responsible for what Hezbollah does out of Lebanon. Particularly since Lebanon essentially rejected UN resolution 1559, which called for disarming the militia. Hamas and Hezbollah made the rules of the game with the ongoing rocket fire into Israel and the abduction of Israeli soldiers. If Israel loses in handling this, its strategic and military standing in the region will change and its deterrence of guerrilla warfare and high-trajectory weapons will be undermined.

From the moment the ground incursion into Gaza started, it was possible Hezbollah would try to help Hamas by attacking on the Lebanese border. This option was rejected by most military analysts. No unusual alert was evident.

They should have asked the Lord

In addition to the desire to help Hamas, Hezbollah has its own grudge to bear with Israel. On May 28, Hezbollah taunted Israel with a Katyusha barrage at an IDF base on Mt. Meron. In response, Israel immediately hit a number of Hezbollah positions along the border. It was clear that Hezbollah, whose leader has often declared his organization would abduct Israelis, was waiting for the right moment, which came yesterday. There is no need for (res.) Major General Giora Eiland to investigate the event in the north as he did the one in the south. It is better to focus on upcoming developments and the question of how to conduct a war on two and maybe three fronts. Hopefully Israel's leaders will give up the harsh words and exaggerated threats we have seen in the past two weeks.

Israel's options now are aggression on two fronts. Israeli would best act cautiously in order not to open a third front with Syria, unless Damascus taunts Israel.

Clearly Israel will strike Lebanese infrastructure related to Hezbollah and may expand its targets in its wrath. For years, Israel neglected the rocket system Hezbollah built in Lebanon with Iranian and Syrian help. It took no preventative measures against the convoys and storehouses of weaponry. We thought they would rust and now they are directed at Israel. There is also an absurd situation where we ignored Hezbollah positions adjacent to the border and to our Galilee communities. Some of those positions were once IDF outposts.

Congress must hold Israel Accountable for violating US law

Living under military occupation, the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip are "protected persons" under the terms of the Geneva Conventions. Israel's attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Gaza Strip are a violation of the Geneva Conventions. These Israeli attacks against civilian targets constitute war crimes.

In addition, by using US-supplied weapons to commit these atrocities, Israel is violating the terms of the U.S. Arms Export Control Act and Foreign Assistance Act. The Arms Export Control Act restricts the use of U.S. weapons to legitimate self-defense and internal policing. From a legal standpoint, U.S. weapons cannot be used to attack civilians in offensive operations. The Foreign Assistance Act prohibits U.S. aid of any kind to a country with a pattern of gross human rights violations - yet Israel has received more US aid than any other nation on our planet.

* On June 9th, Israel shelled a beach in Beit Lahiya killing 8 civilians and injuring 32. At the site of the killing, Human Rights Watch found evidence of a 155mm artillery shell consistent with those fired from an Israeli M-109 Self-Propelled Artillery. Between 2000-2005, the United States licensed to Israel $69,163 worth of M-109 spare parts and 155mm artillery shells. (1)

* On June 13th, Israeli aircraft fired missiles at a van in an extrajudicial killing of two Palestinians in Gaza City. A second barrage of missiles fired shortly afterward killed nine Palestinian bystanders.

* On June 20th, Israeli aircraft fired at least one missile at a car in another attempted extrajudicial killing on a road between Jabalya and Gaza City. The missile missed its intended target and killed three Palestinian children and wounded 15 - a flagrant atrocity.

* On June 27th, Israel launched a massive invasion of the Gaza Strip. Israeli aircraft fired missiles targeting civilian infrastructure. In illegal acts of collective punishment, Israel demolished three key bridges, the Gaza Strip's only electricity generation plant, the five-story Interior Ministry building in Gaza City and part of a university and a school, thereby endangering Palestinian human rights to food, water, health, electricity, education, and freedom of movement. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert openly admitted that the purpose of these measures is to "apply pressure" to the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

* On June 29th, Israel arrested and detained 64 Palestinian Authority cabinet ministers and members of the Palestinian Legislative Council. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert reportedly said in a closed meeting, "They want prisoners released? We'll release these detainees in exchange for Shalit." The arrested Hamas government officials were democratically elected to govern the Palestinian territories in January, and their arrest and targeting can be considered a reprisal against civilians, which is strictly forbidden under the Geneva Conventions.

I respectfully submit that - in the commission of these flagrant violations of US and international law - Israel is now acting as a rogue state engaged in the perpetration of state-sponsored terror against an occupied people who are living under its protective authority and totally reliant on it for their security. These criminal acts are unfolding in direct and systematic violation of their human rights.

Therefore, appropriate action should be taken by Congress as promptly as possible.

What Does the Law Begin with?

Turning over Babylonian Talmud pages, one involuntarily starts getting lost in thought in what tiniest details the Sages of ancient time analyzed each single word of Tora in it, and how much power they spent to show following generations the right way of understanding of what is written in the very first book of mankind. Babylonian Talmud is sixty volumes-treatises of answers to the most difficult and contradictory questions, one can face when making Bible's study of full value.

"About six things it was commanded to the first man Adam: about No Idolatry, and about No Blasphemy, and about No Bloodshed, and about No Lechery, and about No Robbery, and about Courts. Despite all those knowledge came to us by tradition from prophet Moses, and the mind is inclined to them - it can be seen from the direct text of Tora that he was commanded about them. Noah was added with No Limb from Living Creature as it's said (Bereshit 9:4): Only flesh with its soul its blood you shall not eat. - Seven Laws come out"

How it can be seen from the direct Biblical text that Noah descendants have to observe Seven Laws? Where did they come from in general? Well, Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin Treatise, Sheet 56A-56B:

"Seven Laws are commanded to Noah descendants - Courts, and No Blasphemy, No Idolatry, No Lechery, and No Bloodshed, and No Robbery, and No Limb from Living Creature. Rabbi Hanina ben Gamliel says - about No Blood from Living Creature as well. Rabbi Hidka says - about No Castration as well. Rabbi Shimon says - about No Sorcery as well. Rabbi Yose says - Noah descendants are prohibited with everything what is said about sorcery in the corresponding part of Tora (Dvarim 18:10-12): There shall not be found among you anyone who passes his son or daughter through fire, a soothsayer, a diviner of times, and one who interpretes omens, and a sorcerer, and a charmer, and a pithom sorcerer, and a yido's sorcerer, and a necromancer. For whoever does those things is an abomination to the L-rd, and it's coz of those abominations that the L-rd, Your G-d is driving them out from before you. - And He would never punish them unless it was prohibited to them. Rabbi Elazar says - about Banned Mixtures as well. It's allowed to Noah descendants to wear the clothes sewn from mixed woollen and linen fabrics, and to sow fields with heterogeneous seeds. But they are prohibited to pair animals of different species and to interbreed fruitful trees of different kind. Where it all comes from? Rabbi Yohanan said that it's written in Scripture (Bereshit 2:16): And commanded the L-rd G-d to man, saying, of every tree of the garden eat to eat."

Here it is necessary to do some digression. The matter is no single word in Bible is said for no reason, but there's a definite sense hiding behind each letter in it. Sages knew about that and they were able to dig for hidden between the lines. For that they used thirteen principles of Tora's interpretation. All of them are the part of Oral Tradition (Massora), given from one generation to another since prophet Moses times.

Korach

 Those principles are often used in the whole Talmud when it's necessary to trace the sources of various laws in Tora. One of them is called Gzera Shava (correspondence by similarity - Biblical language translation) that is conclusion out of similarity of words or phrases at two different places of Scripture. That means if there are similar words or expressions in two excerpts of Tora, then written in one excerpt has connection with written in the second one. However, this rule (as well as all other ones) can not be used arbitrary, but only where there's an evident Tradition for it.

Based on the given premise, the Sages concluded each single Law out of each single word and combination of words in the given case. That is on the ground of in which context those similar words and combinations of words are met further in the text of Tora. Here is how they did it (Sanhedrin Treatise, Sheet 56B):

"And commanded - those are Courts, since it's written (Bereshit 18:19): For I have known him coz he commands his sons and his household after him, that they should keep the way of the L-rd to perform righteousness and justice. The L-rd - that is No Blasphemy, since it's written (Vayikra 24:16): And one who blasphemously pronounces the Name of the L-rd, shall be put to death. G-d - that is No Idolatry, since it's written (Shemot 20:3): You shall not have other gods in My presence.

NO REDEEMER, Jesus is Christ the LORD

 To man - that is No Bloodshed, since it's written (Bereshit 9:6): One who sheds the blood of man, in man shall his blood be shed. Saying - that is No Lechery, since it's written (Yirmiyahu 3:1): It's said, here, if a man sends away his wife, and she goes away from him, and marries another man, may he return to her again? Of every tree of the garden (it means it was necessary for Adam that G-d permitted and let him use trees of the garden; but what was not let to him is forbidden to him - RASHI's comment) - that is No Robbery. Eat to eat (what is fitted for food, but don't eat limb from a living creature coz living animal is not fitted for food, but must... - RASHI's comment) - that is No Limb from Living Creature. But rabbi Itzhak came and taught it differently: And commanded - that is No Idolatry; G-d - those are Courts. It corresponds, G-d - that is Courts, since it's written (Shemot 22:7): If the thief is not found, the home owner shall approach G-d (it's said like this about courts - Author's note) to swear that he has not laid his hand upon his neighbor's property. And commanded - that is No Idolatry. Where we can get it from? Rabbi Hisda and rabbi Itzhak bar Avdimay - one says (Shemot 32:8): They have quickly turned away from the path I have commanded them, they have made themselves a molten calf, and they have prostrated themselves in front of it. And the other says (Hoshea 5:11): Ephraim is plundered, broken by judgement, for he desired and followed a command (as far as he desired to follow a command of false prophets of Baal (idol name - Author's note) - RASHI's comment)."

This is Sages opinion. And Halacha (practical law) follows it. But there's also some different opinion. It is Menashe School's teaching, which somehow differs from rabbi Yohanan and suggests its own way of Seven Laws concluding from Tora's direct text. Unlike the previous version, here each Law is concluded from separate Tora's phrases according to their direct sense. The direct interpretation is used for those places in Scripture where G-d on His own speakes to Adam and, afterwards, to Noah about corresponding prohibitions (Sanhedrin Treatise, Sheet 56B):

"Menashe School's teaching. It excludes Courts and No Blasphemy Law, while including No Castration and Banned Mixtures Law. Menashe School's teaching says: Seven Laws are commanded to Noah descendants - No Idolatry, and No Lechery, and No Bloodshed, No Robbery, and No Limb from Living Creature, No Castration and Banned Mixtures. Rabbi Yehuda says - first man Adam was commanded about nothing but No Idolatry, since it's written (Bereshit 2:16): And commanded the L-rd G-d to man (His Divine entity commanded He to Adam, so that he wouldn't be unfaithful to It with others - Rashi's comment). Rabbi Yehuda ben Bteira says - about Blessing of G-d as well (what is concluded out of word G-d; His Divine entity commanded He to him, so that he wouldn't curse Him, since it's written (Shemot 22:27): You shall not curse G-d - RASHI's comment). And according to the opinion of some - about Courts as well (Out of word G-d is also concluded; may My Divine entity be upon you, so that fear of Me would be upon you, and so that fear of Me would be in your heart, but no fear of man from flesh and blood, not to distort judgement, for judgement is upon G-d (Dvarim 1:17), as Rav adduces later on - RASHI's comment). To whose opinion rabbi Yehuda's words are corresponding? Rav said: G-d I am (it's said like this to first man Adam - RASHI's comment), you shall not curse Me (as it's written: You shall not curse G-d - RASHI's comment); G-d I am, you shall not be unfaithful to Me(as it's written: 

Jn:8:58: Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

You shall not have other gods in My presence except Me - RASHI's comment); G-d I am, there shall be fear of Me upon you (it's said G-d in the meaning of reigning and judging, as it's written (Shmot 7:1): I have made you the G-d over Pharaoh; may fear of Me be upon you but no fear of man from flesh and blood, as it's written (Dvarim 1:17): And you shall not fear any man, for the judgement is upon G-d; that is Courts - RASHI's comment). According to whose opinion is it? According to the opinion of some."

That means there exists a dispute among the Sages about the opinion spoken out before. Then Menashe School adduces its own interpretation stating that despite interprete we each word of phrase (Bereshit 2:16) "And commanded the L-rd G-d to man, saying, of every tree of the garden eat to eat" as each single Law or not interprete, we can get all Seven Laws a different way. And Menashe School concludes those Seven Laws out of Scripture's corresponding lines according to their direct sense. Here is how (Sanhedrin Treatise, Sheet 56B-57A):

"No Idolatry and No Lechery Law follows from written (Bereshit 6:11): And the earth perverted before G-d. And rabbi Ishmael School teaches - every place where Scripture talks about perversion, lechery and idolatry is meant. Lechery, since it's written (Bereshit 6:12): For all flesh had perverted its way on the earth. Idolatry, since it's written (Dvarim 4:16): Lest you become perverted and make a sculptured image for yourselves. And according to different opinion (the other side's opinion, who participates in the dispute, that is the Sages and rabbi Yohanan opinion - Author's note), it speaks about their behavior (it speaks regarding Flood Generation to inform you about their behavior, which they were punished for - RASHI's comment). No Bloodshed Law follows from written (Bereshit 9:6): One who sheds the blood of man, in man shall his blood be shed. And according to different opinion, it speaks about their Death Penalty (which way of the Death Penalty is used regarding peoples of the world - RASHI's comment). No Robbery Law follows from written (Bereshit 9:3): Like the green vegetation, I have given you everything. And rabbi Levi said - like the green vegetation but not like the green of Eden Garden (where you took without permission - Author's note). And according to different opinion, it speaks about permission to eat meat (for meat was not permitted as a food to first man Adam, but herbs and tree fruits, since it's written (Bereshit 1:29-30): Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing herb, which is upon the surface of the entire earth, and every tree that has seed-bearing fruit, it will be food to you. And to all the beasts of the earth... - herbs and tree fruits may you and the beasts of the earth eat, but not the beasts of the earth themselves are to you; but when Noah Descendants came out of Ark, G-d permitted them to kill and eat animals, He said "like the green vegetation" as far as vegetation was permitted to first man Adam - RASHI's comment). No Limb from Living Creature Law follows from written (Bereshit 9:4): Only flesh with its soul its blood you shall not eat (during all time while in flesh remains its soul aka its blood, don't eat the flesh itself - RASHI's comment). And according to different opinion, it speaks about permission to eat flesh from living Shratzim (swarming - Biblical language translation; as far as the flesh is something which blood can be called soul, and flesh is called flesh if its blood is different from its flesh; but as for Shratzim, their blood can not be called a soul, since it is similar to their flesh - RASHI's comment). No Castration Law follows from written (Bereshit 9:7): Swarm upon the earth and multiply thereon. And according to different opinion, it speaks simply about blessing. Banned Mixtures Law follows from written (Bereshit 6:20): Of the fowl after its kind and of the animals after their kind, of every creeping thing upon the ground after its kind (since Noah was commanded to bring "of every creature two of each", male and female gender of every species, but so that one species would not copulate another; from here it follows No Mixtures Law - RASHI's comment). And according to different opinion, it speaks simply about command."

And although practical law follows the Sages and rabbi Yohanan opinion, as it was said above, Menashe School opinion is taken into account as for Banned Mixtures Law. One can read about it here.

Ministry of Health report on toxic Israeli weapons confirmed by Gaza City medical sources

Director of Public Relations at Gaza City’s Al Shifa Hospital, Dr. Juma Al Sakka, confirmed the Palestinian Ministry of Health’s report from earlier this week which stated that Israeli forces are using toxic weapons in the Gaza Strip.

The doctor spoke on Thursday, giving the death count at 85 Palestinians in the Strip since the latest Israeli attack began. Among the dead are 34 children under the age of 13. And as of Thursday afternoon, 300 Palestinians are injured.

Dr. Al Sakka told Voice of Palestine Radio that the Israeli army is using new types of non-conventional weapons against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip during the recent attacks. He said, “They are targeting the Palestinian body with unconventional weapons and with that comes a phenomena we have not seen before in any Israeli bombardment we have lived through for many years.”

He continued, “The hospital is central and sees almost all cases of injuries and deaths as a result of Israeli against the Palestinians of the Gaza Strip. These Israeli bombings are entering the body and fragmenting, causing internal combustion leading to up to fourth degree internal burns, exposing the bone, and affecting the tissue and skin.”

The doctor added, “These tissues die, they do not survive, which obliges us to perform arm or leg amputations, and there are fragments which penetrate the body and do not show up on X-rays. When entering the body they spark like a combustion firearm, but not chemically. They seem radioactive.”

He confirmed that there were dozens of wounded legs and arms. Many of them had been burned from the inside, and distorted to the point that they cannot return to life again.

Yesterday, Wednesday, was one of the most bloody of all in the recent attacks. Israeli forces killed 25 Palestinians. Dr. Al Sakka said, “It is escalating day after day. Yesterday alone Israeli forces killed 25 and injured dozens. Among them so many were children.”

Dr. Al Sakka revealed that the Israelis completely destroyed by the lab which would help in diagnosing such cases. “We no longer have the ability to make these examinations on phenomena that we see is not normal.”

He called on the international community to examine the latest weapons however the doctor reported that “no one has lifted a finger.” Dr. Al Sakka complained that he did not see any foreign medical institution interested in the use of new weapons and their affects on the human body. Armed resistance groups in Gaza Strip, West Bank and Lebanon standing together against Israeli aggression and occupation

It is becoming apparent in the continued attacks on the Gaza Strip that Israeli forces have discovered a new war tactic: killing entire families.

In a special interview with PNN, Younis Al Khatib, Director of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, said, “What is happening in Gaza is a new method of war that includes the extermination of entire families. This Israeli assassination campaign, unfortunately titled ‘Summer Rain,’ is resulting in massive economic and social hardship for the Palestinians.”

The latest victims of this new war tactic were the members of the Abu Salami family of Gaza City. An elderly woman commented on the killing of the nine family members by stating, “The mother died. The son died. The father died. Each neighborhood, each home, is dying.”

And this message is also intended to for Teheran: that Israel will not let it turn Lebanon in to a theater of war against Israel, and that Jerusalem intends to remove this weapon from Teheran's arsenal against Israel.

Although it is far fetched to believe that Israel would take direct military action against Iran, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that at some point during this conflict Iranian Revolutionary Guards who are reportedly stationed in Lebanon might get hit.

Israel has been saying for years that members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards are stationed among Hizbullah fighters in Lebanon, manning some of the thousands of missiles, some of them long range missiles that could hit the heart of the country, in southern Lebanon.

If they do fire those missiles the Iranian Revolutionary Guards may be targeted.

Targetting the Revolutionary Guards would be the closest that Israel is likely to come within the framework of this current conflagration to taking action against Iran

'Jews financing acts of violence'

Iraq's parliament speaker Thursday accused "Jews" of financing acts of violence in Iraq in order to discredit Islamists who control the parliament and government so they can install their "agents" in power.

Mahmoud al-Mashhadani hinted that the Americans and Israelis did not want to see officials of Sunni and Shi'ite parties running the country because "this is not their agenda."

"They will say that we brought you in a democratic way to the government but you are a sectarian people. One of you is killing the other and you don't deserve to become leaders because you are war lords," al-Mashhadani told reporters after a parliament meeting.

Al-Mashhadani is a member of the Sunni Muslim Iraqi Accordance Front while Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is a member of the Shi'ite Dawa party.

"Some people say `we saw your beheading, kidnappings and killing. In the end we even started kidnapping women who are our honor,"' al-Mashhadani said. "These acts are not the work of Iraqis. I am sure that he who does this is a Jew and the son of a Jew."

"I can tell you about these Jewish, Israelis and Zionists who are using Iraqi money and oil to frustrate the Islamic movement in Iraq and come with the agent and cheap project."

"No one deserves to rule Iraq other than Islamists," he said.

By "agents," he appeared to be referring to secular politicians who do not identify themselves with religious or ethnic communities.

Haifa Hit by Long-Range Missiles

Hizbullah terrorists fired a long-range missile at the major Israeli port city of Haifa Thursday evening. Tzfat and Nahariya were struck again as well, causing scores of injuries.

A simultaneous wave of missiles struck Tzfat and Nahariya at around 7:30. Twenty people were injured in Tzfat - one seriously and three moderately. As the 8 PM news programs began and Israelis prepared to break the Fast of the 17th of Tamuz, two long-range missiles struck Haifa - though no injuries resulted.

Throughout Thursday, nearly 100 Katyusha missiles were fired at various towns and cities in northern Israel, injuring 90 people and killing two.

Eleven people were wounded lightly by shrapnel in the latest attack on Nahariya. One rocket hit a multi-level apartment house and a second destroyed a house. Residents have been ordered to remain in shelters and a small fire is raging in one of the town's parks.

In the eastern Galilee, rockets hit Rosh Pina and Hatzor, as well as Tzfat – which was struck earlier in the day as well.

In Judea and Samaria, Arabs threw rocks and firebombs at Israeli targets Thursday afternoon and also fired at Israeli soldiers. No one was injured.

Rocks were thrown at Israeli vehicles in Samaria, and a firebomb was thrown at a bus near Bethlehem.

IDF soldiers found ammunition and weapons in an Arab car at a checkpoint west of Hevron. (Slingshots) The driver was arrested and is being interrogated.

U.S. vetoes UN resolution condemning Israel's Gaza incursion

The United States blocked a resolution Thursday that would have demanded Israel halt its military offensive in the Gaza Strip, the first United Nations Security Council veto in nearly two years.

The draft, sponsored by Qatar, accused Israel of a "disproportionate use of force" that endangered Palestinian civilians, and demanded Israel withdraw its troops from Gaza.

The U.S. was alone in voting against the resolution. Ten of the 15 Security Council nations voted in favor, and four abstained

The draft had been reworked repeatedly to address concerns that it was too biased against Israel. Language was added calling for the release of abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Corporal Gilad Shalit and urging the Palestinians to stop firing rockets at Israel.

Nonetheless, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton (Jew)  said it was still unacceptable because it had been overtaken by events in the region - including the abduction of two IDF soldiers by Hezbollah militants on Wednesday - and was "unbalanced."

The U.S. has periodically used its veto to block resolutions critical of Israel. The last council veto, in October 2004, was cast when the U.S. blocked a resolution condemning another Israeli operation in Gaza.

Eight of the last nine vetoes in the council have been cast by the U.S. Of those, seven had to do with the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Iran warns of 'fierce response' should Israel strike at Syria

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday an Israeli strike on Syria would be considered an attack on the whole Islamic world that would bring a "fierce response", state television reported.

"If the Zionist regime commits another stupid move and attacks Syria, this will be considered like attacking the whole Islamic world and this regime will receive a very fierce response," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying in a telephone conversation with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Riyadh faults Hezbollah for current crisis
Saudi Arabia on Thursday blamed "elements" inside Lebanon for the violence with Israel, in unusually frank language directed at guerrilla group Hezbollah and its Iranian backers.

"A distinction must be made between legitimate resistance and uncalculated adventures undertaken by elements inside (Lebanon) and those behind them without recourse to the legal authorities and consulting and coordinating with Arab nations," a statement published on the official news agency SPA said.

"These elements should bear the responsibility for their irresponsible actions and they alone should end the crisis they have created."

Lebanon asks Security Council to impose cease-fire
Lebanon's government asked the United Nations Security Council on Thursday to order a cease-fire in the cross-border fighting between Lebanon and Israel.

The Lebanese government "calls on the UN Security Council to take a comprehensive and immediate decision for a cease-fire and for lifting the siege [on Lebanon]," said Information Minister Ghazi Aridi after an emergency Cabinet meeting.

"Lebanon's main demand is a comprehensive cease-fire now and an end to this open-ended aggression," Aridi told reporters.

The Lebanese government announced that it was rejecting an Israeli demand to deploy its military in southern Lebanon. According to a government statement, Lebanon rejects the Israeli claim that its military actions are defensive measures.

Lebanese Minister for Social Affairs Mila Mawad on Thursday said the government was preparing to announce its cease-fire proposal to Hezbollah and Israel, under which Hezbollah would be required to free the IDF soldiers it captured on Wednesday. The proposal does not mention the release of Lebanese prisoners.

When asked by a reporter why Lebanon does not disarm Hezbollah, Mawad said the organization was brought into the government to grant its members the feeling they Lebanese.

Israel believes Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah did not intend to ignite such a dramatic escalation when his fighters kidnapped two Israel Defense Forces soldiers and killed eight others on Tuesday.

The move was apparently intended return to the spotlight Hezbollah campaign for the release of Lebanese Samir Kuntar, jailed in Israel for the killing of a Nahariya family.
