The diplomat's car was hit by three bullets fired into the windshield. The ambassador was not in the vehicle when it came under fire. It was not clear whether the vehicle was a target or inadvertently drove into the gun battle.
During the fighting, Hamas gunmen, holed up in an abandoned building during the battle, fired a rocket-propelled grenade and threw two hand grenades at the police, witnesses said.
The killing of the driver brought to eight the number of deaths in internal fighting in Gaza this month. Hospital officials identified the driver as Khaled Radaida, 45, and said he was a Jordanian citizen. Two civilians and a policeman were wounded in the shootout, doctors said.
The fighting erupted in an area between the Palestinian parliament and police headquarters.
Security officials said the incident began when members of a new Hamas army stopped a car carrying members of the Preventive Security Service, a branch loyal to moderate Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas.

The Region: Will there be a
Palestinian civil war?
There is a major struggle going on that could be described as the biggest internal Palestinian conflict in memory, perhaps in history. The question is whether this conflict will develop into a full-blown civil war.
The battle is between Hamas and Fatah, between Islamism and nationalism. It is also a struggle between two groups each wanting the fruits of leadership: power, prestige and money.
It is between Aholibah the zionist

With the demise of unchallenged Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat (assassinated)
and - no less important - Fatah's inability to gain a state due to its own
intransigence, the way lay open for Hamas's rise. This trend was also made
possible by Arafat's encouragement of anarchy and attempt to use Hamas for his
own purposes.
Of course, it can also be traced to Fatah's corruption and incompetence in
running the Palestinian Authority for 12 years.

The turning point was Hamas's landslide victory in the January 25 election, partly due to Fatah's internal splits. Another factor was Fatah's incredible arrogance and inflexibility. It assumed that no one else could possibly lead the Palestinians.
FATAH'S campaign manager told me before the balloting: "People will vote for Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas] and everything will be okay." Since then, power has been divided between Abbas, the PA's leader and self-styled president, and a Hamas-dominated parliament and cabinet.
Abbas has unilaterally given himself control over borders, the media, and some security agencies. Hamas is fuming but cannot do much about this power grab. To make matters worse for Hamas, the 60,000-member PA bureaucracy, including security forces, is dominated by Fatah members.
International sanctions against giving money to the Hamas regime also hurt the Islamists. Yet the European Union had earlier stopped aid to the PA because of its financial irresponsibility. This kind of thing should be remembered in the face of a strong temptation to declare Fatah, as opposed to Hamas, the "good guys," or at least the lesser of two evils.

While Fatah is somewhat less horrible than Hamas, it is Fatah's past incitement, terrorism and refusal to make real peace that are at the root of the current situation. There is no reason to believe it would do better in the future if restored to power.
THERE IS much discussion of why Hamas won the elections. Some would say that Palestinians supported Hamas's program; others that voters were merely reacting against Fatah's corruption. Both points are valid, but there is more to the story.
About half of Hamas's voters have shown they support its program. The other half has no problems with its views except that of Islamizing society. Yet regarding terrorism, Israel, peace and general world view there is not a big difference between Fatah and Hamas, except on the religious issue.

What of the future?
First, can Fatah return to office? This is possible but far from certain.
Not the slightest reform has taken place in Fatah, nor has any of the leadership been replaced or the younger generation fully incorporated.
Fatah, as was once said of France's reactionary Bourbon dynasty, has learned nothing and forgotten nothing.
A Hamas-Fatah deal is also possible, but not so likely. Any such arrangement would necessitate Fatah accepting the role of junior partner, which Hamas never did. Given the Fatah mind-set this seems unlikely, though some cadre may join Hamas out of their own views or opportunism.
One reason for keeping up the pressure on the Hamas regime is to discourage such a rapprochement.
SECOND, how is Fatah competing with Hamas? Certainly, it is not doing so by laying out an alternative, moderate line. If Fatah so wished it could take the option available to it for a decade and urge an end to the eternal struggle with Israel that would quickly win it a state and international support.
While a few people in Fatah do think this way, Abbas among them to some extent, there is no sign that anyone is seriously considering such a strategy. Instead, Fatah is competing by trying to prove that it is just as militant as the Islamists, including the escalation of its own attempts at terrorism.
Since the election, Fatah statements and actions are more, rather than less, extreme.
Of course, Fatah can also hope that Western and Israeli pressures will bring down Hamas and simply hand it power once again. Fatah is encouraging its supporters to blame Hamas for the economic problems of the PA and to demonstrate, demanding their pay. Equally, Fatah is resisting any moves by Hamas to take over the security forces and put its own people into the bureaucracy.
This effort may even succeed. But such an outcome cannot be taken for granted.
FINALLY, WILL there be a civil war? Clearly, armed resistance to Hamas's encroachment on Fatah-controlled areas and institutions is happening periodically. Yet both sides are trying to avoid an all-out struggle.
Continuing anarchy and periodic clashes seem more likely than full-scale battle.
It is important not to underestimate the staying power of either Hamas, Fatah or the PA. The stakes are too high for both sides to give much ground. Equally, there is a deep-seated strategy of being willing to sacrifice the welfare of the Palestinian population in the fight against each other and Israel.
Let them suffer, the activists and gunmen argue, and that suffering will force the West and Israel to ease the pressure and give into their demands without Palestinian concessions.
This seems a strange approach, but it is one that the Palestinian movement
has used for a half-century and does not seem to have yet transcended. On more
than one occasion in the past it has even worked. Often, however, it has led to
disaster.
In this case, the latter appears more likely.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, accusing him of conspiring

about the effects of Olmert's convergence plan on Jor-dan,
and they plan to make this clear to the prime minister during his visit.

potential partner for peace negotiations, telling CNN that the PA leader was
"powerless" to speak on behalf of his people.

Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on Sunday rejected an Egyptian proposal to make
changes to the internationally brokered road map to Middle East peace, and move
to immediate discussions on some aspects of a final status agreement between

In a controversial appearance at the recent
American Jewish Committee centennial convention in Washington, author A.B.
Yehoshua predicted that Diaspora Jews would move to China if it were to become
a world power. Dr. Avrum Ehrlich, a professor at the Center for Judaic
and Inter-Religious Studies at the University of Shandong, says that this process
is actually already under way.
"The Jewish community in Hong Kong is thriving," he explains,
"and there are at least 3,000 Jews now living permanently in Beijing
alone."
There has been a continuous Jewish presence in China during the last 200
years, starting with Sephardi merchants who arrived there along with the
British, and continuing with Russian Jews who settled in Harbin (one of whom
was Ehud Olmert's grandfather). During World War II many German refugees
sought shelter first in Shanghai - one of the only places in the world that
was open to Jews at the time.
China's modern
history is dotted with Jewish figures like Morris ("Two-Gun") Cohen,
a Polish-born adventurer who served as a liaison between the Taiwanese
government and China's communist leaders. Another was Israel Epstein, the
Warsaw-born Marxist author, who died last year after being honored by all
Chinese presidents from Mao to the present Hu Jintao.
Ehrlich says he regrets the fact that current relations between Israel and
China are limited to the military and economic spheres, without any
significant cultural dialogue. Among the many Israeli and Jewish
businesspeople he has encountered recently in China, he says, are ultra-Orthodox
kashrut supervisors.

Ehrlich himself owes his current position to the economic boom in the world's

The center in Shandong was established 10 years ago by one of the local
professors. According to Ehrlich, in 2004 the center was given a mandate by

Ehrlich made up a list of 25 Jewish classics for translation, including the Mishna,
the Kuzari and the Zohar, as well as writings of such notables as
Maimonides, Herman Cohen, Rabbi Kook, Ahad Ha'am and Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan. He
smiles when asked about the quality of the work, which was done by local
students.
"I could say my job is to try and limit the damage," he says
ironically. "They
(the
Chinese students) have been ordered to do it, so they do it,
even if they'll be correcting these translations for the next 20 years."
At least eight of China's 300 universities are now offering courses in Jewish
studies. Ehrlich estimates about 100 students nationwide study Hebrew each year
in comparison to five a year in the 1990s. He says the Chinese see
studying
the Jews as essential to understanding the underpinnings of Western thinking.
"They see the Jews as mavericks of Western thinking and ideology," he
says. But the strongest driving force behind the interest in Jews is not
cultural or intellectual, he says, and he noticed it when he first came to
China, while looking at the books on the airport book stands. "I saw many
books with titles like 'How
to be a Jewish millionaire.' I later understood that when most Chinese speak
about 'Jewish wisdom,' they mean what they see as the phenomenal Jewish prowess
in making money. I
don't see this as a negative thing, because I hope it might be an entree for
them into other areas as well."

U.S. TV Ad Targets Consequences of Unilateral
Withdrawal Plan

A television advertising campaign in the United States is reminding viewers of the costs of returning territory to the Palestinian Authority. |
The Center
for Security Policy is sponsoring the campaign, which targets Prime Minister
Ehud Olmert’s unilateral withdrawal plan. The ad, which
is being broadcast on national television in the U.S. beginning, is timed to
coincide with Olmert’s visit to Washington.
Olmert is slated to meet with President George W. Bush on Tuesday and is
expected to promote his so-called “Convergence Plan” to return major blocs
of land in Judea and Samaria (DAN Aholah) to the
PA. The plan calls for drawing of final borders for Israel if peace negotiations
with the PA do not begin within the next six months.
His schedule includes meetings on Monday at the Pentagon.

Olmert will also address a joint session of the U.S. Congress on Wednesday,
the day after his meeting with President Bush. Representatives
and Senators are urged in the ad to oppose any further territorial concessions

returned to terrorist control, as well as the past history of such
“give-backs” in southern Lebanon and Gaza.

Expansion, Not Expulsion, for Four Yesha

Four Judea and Samaria (Yesha) communities have received official permission from the IDF's Central Command to expand their "jurisdictional area," to the dismay of the Peace Now organization. |
The expansion orders for the four existing communities, signed by OC Central
Command Maj.-Gen. Ya'ir Naveh, had been processed during the tenure of former
Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz, according to the Defense Ministry.
Newly-appointed Defense Minister Amir Peretz approved the expansion, even as
Peace Now head Yariv Oppenheimer strongly condemned the approval. Peretz did
say, however, that he intends to "review" the issue of expanding
the jurisdictional area for Yesha communities.
“It turns out that settlement blocs are also flexible and changeable
concepts,” charged Oppenheimer, speaking on
Israel Radio. He said it was the first expansion of Yesha communities in years, decided
on "in back rooms and far from the public eye."
The expansions were granted to the following communities:
* Maskiyot, a community located in the northern Jordan Valley. Some 30 Jewish
refugees from the expelled Gush Katif community of Shirat HaYam are expected to
move into the new homes there by next month.
* Oranit, located on the western slope of the Samaria mountains, northeast of
Petah Tikvah and southeast of Kfar Saba. The community was founded in 1985.
* The Jerusalem suburb Givat Ze’ev, north of the city. Givat Ze’ev received
authorization six weeks ago to widen its area by 15 acres (60 dunams),
effectively sealing physical contiguity between the capital and its nearby
suburb.
* Beitar Illit, located in the Gush Etzion region, which is to receive 100 added
acres (400 dunams). Oppenheimer claimed that the approval was signed just
last Wednesday, although a Ministry spokesperson said the orders were
first signed by Naveh while Mofaz was still in office. Naveh is effectively the
commander for IDF activities in Yesha.
Oppenheimer called the expansions “an attempt to steal more Palestinian
land” and claimed the move was the first step in Prime Minister Ehud
Olmert’s unilateral withdrawal plan to draw permanent borders for the state.
He demanded that Peretz “rescind this move and call General Naveh to
account.”

Service of Refining The World Has Been Completed - That’s A Fact!

As head of the Vaad Hanachos HaTmimim for more than ten years, Rabbi Simon Jacobson, noted author of Toward a Meaningful Life, had a unique opportunity for interaction with the Rebbe MH”M.
Schneerson
In
this article, he shares with readers of Beis Moshiach some of the
directives and clarifications he merited to receive during this time.
When
it comes to “spreading the wellsprings outward,” Rabbi Simon Jacobson is
certainly on the forefront. His popular book, Toward a Meaningful Life,
has already been translated into several languages, and has brought the
Rebbe’s teachings to millions of people around the world. As the Rebbe’s chozer
and head of the Vaad Hanachos HaTmimim for over a decade, Rabbi Jacobson
was responsible for preparing the Rebbe’s sichos for print, a job that
entailed obtaining hundreds of clarifications directly from the Rebbe on various
topics in Chassidus.
Several weeks ago, Rabbi Jacobson was invited to deliver a lecture in 770
(Of 7/7 London, and flight 77 WTC) on the Rebbe’s repeated statements to the effect that the “service of birurim [the process of refining the world] is over”Mt:25:32: And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
Mt:25:33: And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
and
“the buttons have already been polished.” The organizers of the event asked
him to expound upon several questions: 1) When the Rebbe made these statements,
was he expressing a wish or a blessing, or was he revealing an actual fact? 2)
If the service of birurim is indeed over, and the reason for the Galus
doesn’t exist anymore, why has the Geula shleima not yet taken
place? 3) How can evil (e.g., conflict between nations, the battle between the yetzer
ha’ra and the yetzer tov, etc.) still exist? 4) If, as the Rebbe
said, “everything is ready [for the Redemption]; the only thing left is to
open our eyes,” what kind of service are we supposed to be engaging in now?
Fact:
The Buttons Are Already Polished
The
phrase “polishing the buttons” has been in the Lubavitcher lexicon for
decades. The first time the expression was used was on Simchas Torah 5689
(1928), when the Rebbe Rayatz explained that almost all of the components of the
Redemption are already in place. The Rebbe Rayatz declared that even the
“garments” were ready; only the finishing touches, like “polishing the
buttons,” remained to be done.
The
first time the Rebbe MH”M used the expression “the buttons have already been
polished” was in the famous sicha of Beis Nissan 5748. But for almost
two more years, till the summer of 5750, the Rebbe did not mention it again.
When
I heard that expression from the Rebbe that summer I was surprised; I wasn’t
even sure that I had heard correctly. In fact, my brother hadn’t heard the
Rebbe say it, nor had the other chozrim at the farbrengen. The
following Shabbos everyone was on the lookout. That time, we all heard the Rebbe
say that “the buttons have already been polished…”
The truth is that we were shocked. One of the underlying principles of Chassidus is that as soon as the service of birurim is completed, the inner purpose of creation is supposed to materialize G-d’s “dwelling place in the lower worlds.”

As
the Alter Rebbe put it, “The reason the Galus has been so drawn-out,
more than 1700 years, is to refine the 288 sparks. Moshiach will arrive when the
process is finished, may it happen speedily in our days, amen.”
We
asked ourselves: If the service of birurim is over, where is the
Redemption? According to the rule of cause and effect, if the cause of a certain
phenomenon ceases to exist, the effect should disappear as well. If the reason
for the Galus is to refine the 288 sparks of holiness that fell to the sitra
achra, and that has already been accomplished, there is no reason for the Geula
to be delayed!
When
the Rebbe made reference to these concepts several times over the next few
weeks, we decided to ask him directly. The way it worked was that whenever we
weren’t sure what the Rebbe meant, we would submit two different versions, and
the Rebbe would choose the one that was correct.
So
when we gave in the sicha for the Rebbe to edit, there were two
possibilities: In the first version, the Rebbe was saying that he hoped and
wished that we would reach the point at which the process of birurim and
“polishing the buttons” was behind us. In the second version, we made it
clear that the Rebbe was revealing the true reality
that the process had already been completed. In addition to the two
versions, we included our question: if the service of birurim is over,
why is the Geula being delayed?
When
the Rebbe edited the sicha, he drew a line through our first version and
indicated that the second was correct. As for our question, he noted briefly,
“This is not the place to elaborate.”
From
the Nasi to the
People
On Purim 5748 the Rebbe spoke about how for many years, he had labored to understand why Moshiach has still not come. After much effort, the Rebbe explained, he arrived at the conclusion that the reason was that, till now, the
task of bringing Moshiach lies on the shoulders of the nasi. Now, however, the time has come to turn the job over to the people. In the Rebbe’s words: “From now on, the matter has passed from the category of ‘the nasi is all’ to the ‘all’Referendum
that
is, to each and every Jew.”
On the 28th of Nissan 5751 the Rebbe stated this even more clearly and
unambiguously: “I have done my part; from now on, you must do all in your
power.”
The
truth is that the Rebbe repeatedly warned us in his sichos
from the very first day he [officially] assumed the leadership of Chabad
that he would not allow the Chassidim to rely on the Rebbe to do all the
work. On the 11th of Shvat 5711, the Rebbe outlined his future plans with the
following announcement: Do not think, he said, that you now have someone to rely
on, someone to whom you can simply give in your pidyonos… Rather, each
and every one of you has a job, and each individual must fulfill it for himself.
I will not refrain from helping you, but I will also not assume all the
responsibility. You must be the ones to expend the effort, and I will assist
you. That was the crux of the Rebbe’s message.
There’s
an expression to the effect that when a person is in the middle of a deep
forest, he “cannot see the forest for the trees.” Sometimes, many years have
to pass before the perspective of hindsight enables us to understand past
events. Today, 50 years after the Rebbe assumed the nesius, it isn’t
hard to discern the Rebbe’s unwavering insistence on individual service,
“till the flame rises up of it own accord.” These concepts, which we heard
so many times at farbrengens, take on new meaning with the proper
perspective.
Take,
for example, the whole idea of shlichus, the very “backbone” of the
Rebbe’s nesius all these years. Let’s compare it to the way another
“educational institution” like I.B.M., l’havdil, operates. When an
employee of I.B.M. goes to a new city to assist the parent company, he is given
full financial support (provided he submits a detailed account of all his
expenses). The employee doesn’t make a move without prior approval. Every step
he takes has to be authorized by the home office.
L’havdil
elef alfei havdalos, the Rebbe’s shluchim are expected to act
autonomously as soon as they arrive in their new location. Every shaliach
is responsible for his own fundraising and erecting his own network of mosdos.
A shaliach doesn’t ask the Rebbe for permission every time he does
something. He’s supposed to be “a flame that rises up of its own accord.”
But of course, as a shaliach of the Rebbe, he isn’t acting solely under
his own power.
On
Shabbos Parshas B’Haaloscha 5751, the Rebbe expounded on the concept of “a
flame that rises up of its own accord,” which is a fundamental principle in Yiddishkeit
and chinuch in particular. When a Jew exerts an influence on another
person, it must be done in a way that the affected person can continue to
progress on his own, “a flame that rises up of its own accord.”
In
that rather complex sicha, the Rebbe connected this idea to the much more
difficult concept of free will. By the end of the sicha we had a whole
page of questions on various points that we didn’t quite understand. We asked
the Rebbe for further clarification.
A
few hours later we had our answer. With his holy hand, the Rebbe wrote something
like this: The whole content of the sicha was “that the flame should
rise up of its own accord” and
you’re asking me? (implying that we were supposed to figure it out for
ourselves.) However, the Rebbe added that when we expend our own energy to
understand it, “it would also be accomplished with the power of the Kohen
Gadol.”
When
we received that answer we were astounded. We had never gotten anything like it
before. I was especially surprised by its conclusion. It reminded me of the
story that is told about the Tzemach Tzedek, who one time had to travel to
Petersburg on a communal matter. For some reason the Tzemach Tzedek was unable
to make the trip himself, so he sent one of his Chassidim in his stead. When the
Chassid asked what he should do if he wasn’t sure how to act in a particular
situation, the Rebbe told him to rely on “daas atzmo,” his own
intellect. The Rebbe Maharash, who had overheard this conversation, was sure
that the Chassid would get into trouble. A few days later, during the Shabbos seuda,
the Tzemach Tzedek suddenly looked as if something was wrong, and said that the
Chassid in Petersburg was experiencing a problem. After a pause of a few moments
the Rebbe added that the Chassid had made his decision, and said, “Good, good.
He knew what I meant…”
The
Rebbe Maharash then realized that the Chassid was on such a high level that his
intellect was completely nullified to the will of the Tzemach Tzedek, and
whatever he decided would surely be in accordance with the Rebbe’s wishes.
The
Rebbe MH”M told this story on Shabbos Parshas Shmos 5748. At the end of the
story he explained, “When a shaliach is sent out to perform a task, he
is given all the strengths and powers he needs to fulfill it, including the
ability to decide correctly in case of doubt. This ensures that his decision
will be in accordance with the truth.”
The
Rebbe even said that his words were intended as a “general answer” to all shluchim:
Whenever a question arises about the proper method of spreading Yiddishkeit
and the wellsprings of Chassidus outward, the individual shaliach must
decide for himself, as “a judge can only make a decision based on what he
sees.” The whole idea of shlichus is based on the assumption that the shaliach
has been given the power to deduce the true will of the meshalei’ach.
This is because the shaliach is so nullified to the “Kohen Gadol”
that everything he does is accomplished with the Rebbe’s strength.
We
shouldn’t be surprised that the Rebbe has assigned us a task; the truth is
that it’s always been that way. The only difference is that the job we’ve
been given now, to bring Moshiach, was “taboo”
all these years, belonging only to the Rebbe; the Rebbe was the one who was
supposed to be worrying about the Geula.
For
our part, we were busy with the details: bringing people to the Rebbe,
convincing another Jew to put on tefillin, or light Shabbos candles. But
we never dealt directly with the main point, from which all the details follow:
the Redemption itself. On Purim 5747, and even more clearly on the 28th of
Nissan 5751, the Rebbe explained that the time had come for us to participate.
Bringing Moshiach is no longer the sole concern of the Rebbe; it is also what
Chassidim are supposed to be doing.
Why did the Rebbe turn such an important job over to us? I offer you the following explanation…
It
is explained in Torah Ohr that had Adam and Chava not committed the sin
of the eitz hadaas, the Redemption would have begun immediately. In other
words, the inner purpose of creation, i.e., the revelation of G-dliness in this
lowest of all worlds, would have already been accomplished way back then.
Adam and Eve was given One Purpose, that Purpose was to testify of the Life Giver, instead they submitted to the murderer from the beginning. The trial ends when the last saint is slain for their testimony of the Life Giver the Redeemer from the beginning, this is the Purpose which was purposed upon all mankind, there are no "ifs" or buts
A
question is asked: Is there any difference between the Geula that could
have happened then and the one we’re waiting for now, 5760 years later? And
the answer is yes. Had Adam and Chava brought the Geula then, the world
would have been refined in a manner of “from
Above to below.” Because Adam and Chava would have not been physically able to
reach every place on earth and refine the individual sparks of holiness that had
fallen there, the Geula would have consisted of a giant burst of G-dliness
from Above that would have automatically drawn all of these sparks toward it.

As Adam and Chava did not bring the Geula, the task was given over to their descendents. Here we are talking about a larger number of people, who would be able to spread throughout the world and refine the sparks in a manner of “from below to Above.”

This kind of service has a double advantage: First of all, the process of refinement is much more “internal,” because it initiates from that which is being refined. Secondly, it transforms actual physical locations into centers of Torah, (Talmud Bavli of their Dragon) which is an even more powerful expression of transforming the world into a dwelling place for G-d.

However, illumination “from Above to below” is also necessary, to refine whatever sparks remain that people have not yet reached.

And
so the process continued from generation to generation, with each successive
generation involving more and more people in the avoda. As time went on,
the chance increased that a greater number of sparks would be elevated in a
manner of “from below to Above.” But dozens of generations later, there were
still places on earth that Jews had not gotten to, such as America, which is
called “the lower hemisphere.” There were still vast expanses that hadn’t
even been touched. Let’s say that the Redemption would have happened in the
times of the first Beis Hamikdash, thousands of years before the
discovery of America. All the sparks in the “lower hemisphere” would have
had to be refined in a manner of “from Above to below,” and the refinement
would not have been as “internal” and complete.

Carrying
this one step further, we can even say that for the first 40 years of the
Rebbe’s nesius, up until 5750, we did not need the service of “from
Above to below.” Why? Because the true preparation for the Geula
consists of the lower realms coming to the realization that “there is
nothing but Him,” or as the Rambam put it: “And the world will be as full of
the knowledge of G-d as the waters cover the sea bed.” That is the goal we
have been working toward all these years.

truth is, however, that during the first 40 years of the Rebbe’s nesius
we weren’t doing this directly. Whenever we went out on mitzvaim, we
would explain to Jews why they should put on tefillin or put a mezuza
on their door, but we never specifically told them that “there is none but
Him.” Let’s put it another way: We were busy with all the “details” that
make up the Geula, but we never dealt with the Geula itself. Back
in 5735, if we met a Jew on the street and tried to convince him to put on tefillin,
we never mentioned that the whole purpose of Torah and mitzvos is
to bring about the Days of Moshiach.
The
issue of the Redemption was left solely to the Rebbe – he was the one who was
supposed to prepare the world for Moshiach in a manner of “from Above to
below.” This created a situation in which the Rebbe’s Chassidim and shluchim
were working “from below to Above.” But this is a more superficial level of
preparation. The true preparation — that of bringing the world to the
realization that “there is none but Him” — was being done only by the
Rebbe, “from Above to below.”
After
several decades of “spreading the wellsprings outward,” the Rebbe succeeded
in raising the world to a higher level, to the point that it was ready to absorb
the message of “there is none but Him.” Chassidim could now focus on filling
the world with knowledge of G-d.” That was when the Rebbe gave the task of
bringing Moshiach over to us, because the world was ready for the final level of
preparation before the Geula.

What does this mean in practical terms? Today, when we go out on mitzvaim, aside from convincing someone to put on tefillin, we are also obligated to explain to him that the whole purpose of mitzvos is to bring about the Redemption.

sum up: Up until the 28th of Nissan 5751, our service of preparing the world for
Moshiach was similar to that of Adam and Chava before the sin of the eitz
hadaas. The main portion of the service of refining the sparks was still
being accomplished “from Above to below.” After the 28th of Nissan 5751,
when the task was
given over to the Chassidim,
we could now begin the final stages of service “from below to Above.”
The
Days of Moshiach Have Already Commenced
In
the sicha of 19-20 Kislev 5752, the Rebbe used the words “…these days
in which we find ourselves, the Days of Moshiach.” He then went on to explain:
“As mentioned several times…all of the end dates have already long passed,
and all of the preparations, including the ‘polishing of the buttons, etc.’
have already been completed.”
In
effect, this was the conclusion of all the Rebbe’s sichos during those
later years. But even if the Rebbe hadn’t explicitly told us, we would have
still been obligated to figure it out for ourselves, drawing our conclusions
from his repeated statements that the service of refinement was over. This is
especially true after the Rebbe clarified that he was not saying this as
blessing or hope for the future, but as a statement of fact. We are now in the
Days of Moshiach!
This leads us to the next question: If we are already in the Days of Moshiach, how is it possible for evil to still exist, both in macrocosm (conflict between nations) and in microcosm (the individual’s continuing struggle with the animal soul)?

answer is found in a long letter the Rebbe wrote before he assumed the nesius,
in which he explains the concept of the resurrection of the dead. (The letter is
printed in the pamphlet Teshuvos Ubiurim and also in Volume 2 of the
Rebbe’s Igros Kodesh.)
The
Rebbe devotes several paragraphs to an exact definition of what is meant by
“the Days of Moshiach.” The Rebbe writes: “Olam HaZeh, this world,
is a time of battle between the yesh (awareness of self as a created
being) and the spiritual realm, between good and evil. ‘And the one nation
shall strive against the other nation.’ Sometimes the good is victorious, and
sometimes, etc.
“In the Days of Moshiach, when the Jewish people will have completed their battle and refined the good from the evil, that is, the good will have been separated from the evil, they will be redeemed from exile.
When they manage to slay the Saints of God, the Ultimate sacrifice to their wannabe Talmudic god, Satan that Old dragon they serve
They will then attain the highest level of perfection, that of Adam before the sin of the eitz hadaas, and they will no longer be under the influence of the Tree of Good and Evil.

does this mean for us? As we can conclude from the Rebbe’s statements about
the service of birurim being completed, it means that we’ve succeeded
in reaching the very beginning of the Days of Moshiach, through our own efforts.
The Rebbe has told us this explicitly. The question is, what is the exact
definition of the “Days of Moshiach”?
We
all know that evil still exists in the world. Even according to halacha,
there are still certain things that are “absolute evil belonging to the three
unclean klipos.” We still haven’t reached the state when G-d will
completely remove the spirit of uncleanliness from the world. On the other hand,
given the Rebbe’s statement that the service of birurim has been
completed, how can klipa still have any vitality whatsoever?
The
explanation is that within the service of birurim, there are two stages:
The first stage involves isolating the sparks of holiness from evil. At this
point evil still exists, but there is a certain degree of distinction between
good and evil. This is what is meant by the verse in Daniel (12:10), “Many
shall purify themselves, and make themselves white.” During this stage,
we’ve already passed from the category of “this world” into the “Days of
Moshiach,” for this world is “a time of battle between the yesh and
the spiritual realm,” when good and evil are all mixed up together. In other
words, in the Days of Moshiach, after we’ve refined and separated all the
sparks of holiness, there will no longer be an admixture or jumbling together of
good and evil. But we cannot reach the next and final level, in which klipa
will be completely nullified, through our own efforts. That can only be done by
G-d Himself, when He will “slaughter the yetzer hara.”

What
follows is that today, given that there is no longer this admixture of good and
evil, if evil wins it doesn’t mean that the forces of klipa have power;
it just means that we’re being lazy.
To
illustrate our current situation, there are two analogies we can draw from the
natural world. What happens when fire meets water, and when darkness meets
light? When water is doused on a fire, the fire is extinguished, provided there
is a sufficient quantity of water. But if the fire is very big, the water will
be reduced to vapor. The battle between darkness and light, however, is
different. Physically, darkness can never extinguish light. The light doesn’t
even have to “fight” the darkness, because it doesn’t recognize it as an
entity. When the light is turned on, the darkness automatically disappears.
The
spiritual darkness we see today can be vanquished with a very little amount of
light. We don’t need to go out to battle in order to win. Externally, it may
look as if we’re still at war. But on a deeper level, all we have to do is
reveal the inner light that already exists.
Explaining
to the Nations
In
practical terms: The Rebbe explicitly told us that the time has come when even
the most abstract concepts in Chassidus (“there is none but Him; the triumph
of form over matter, etc.) can be discussed with everyone.
But not only are we allowed to speak of such things, we are required to,
as part of the process of preparing the world for Moshiach. This includes
explaining the concept of Redemption and the function of Moshiach in the world
at large.
That son of Perdition "Revealed"
Before
the Rebbe informed us that the service of birurim was completed, this
wasn’t even relevant. In the times of the Alter Rebbe, the concept of
“spreading the wellsprings outward” applied to Jews who were on the level of
midos (emotive powers) rather than mochin (intellect). In the
times of the Tzemach Tzedek, the focus was enlarged to include people who
didn’t even reach the category of midos, but were still
very pious and G-d-fearing. Today, however, we’re talking about
goyim, l’havdil,
and the need to teach them the Seven Noahide Laws!
The Rebbe wants even non-Jews to be ready for Moshiach. Even they are ready to
absorb the idea of “there is none but Him.”
We
have to wake up from our slumber. There are still billions of people out there
who haven’t heard the Rebbe’s message of imminent Geula. One-third of
the world’s population lives in China, another huge portion in India
– how many of these people have we reached? Boruch Hashem, there
are so many new technologies through which we can educate people, especially the
Internet. We simply have to learn how to utilize all of these channels properly.

The highest concepts in
Chassidus must be brought down and explained to everyone, for it will surely have an impact on practical deed. In truth, this is the whole basis of Chassidus — that learning about G-dliness will ultimately have an effect on emotion and deed.To
sum up: The most important thing today is to study the Rebbe’s most recent sichos.
This will give us an accurate picture of the times we live in, as well as reveal
exactly how we can hasten the Rebbe’s revelation.

is the connection between the “decree of the King” that Persia must fall and
the Yaaros Dvash that says that when
Moshiach should have come we still have to wait for Persia's fall?
What is the relevance of the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s statement that our
divine service is done and the Mitteler Rebbe’s teaching that there is a
special level of mitzvos that do not refine sparks at all?
All
the Divine Sparks Have Been Elevated
In
5752 (late 1991) the Lubavitcher Rebbe made the astonishing statement: that the
divine service of the Jewish people in exile—refining
the sparks of kedusha that had fallen into this lowest of worlds—has
been completed. Even the tshuva of the Jewish people has been done. The Rebbe
himself said that it is completely beyond understanding how Moshiach hasn't
come. That was 15 years ago! How
much more inexplicable it is today!
This situation fits the description of the Yaaros Dvash (quoted above), that a moment will come when Moshiach should have arrived, but he is still delayed.
The
reason: we are waiting for the fall of Persia (Paras).
In order to understand this, we must understand the
spiritual dimension of the nation of Paras.
What is Paras (סרפ)
Iran,
Persia
Every
nation in the world (70 distinct entities, according to Torah)
(Noahide Nation who worship the Dragon and his
beast)
is an expression of a different underlying spiritual quality. For example, the
nation of Bavel (Babylon) is related to "bilbul"—confusion,
the confusion that
hinders a Jew's divine service[3].
Yavan (Greece) had their spiritual root in the klipa of chochma, impure wisdom.
When the Jewish people were challenged by these nations in the physical world it
was a reflection of being challenged by their spiritual sources. When the Jews
overcame their spiritual source, these nations fell. So we must ask: what is
Paras (Persia/Iran) and what is its spiritual source?
Serving Hashem for Reward

According to Rashi on Bereishis 10:2, Paras is Tiras, the seventh son of Yefes ben Noach. Paras is from the Hebrew root which means reward[4]. As explained in Chassidus[5], Paras (סרפ) is from the word הסורפ meaning a "slice", a fraction of something much greater (a slice of the whole pie).

In
this case, it refers to the Divine revelation in Gan Eden that results from the
sparks of G-dliness that are refined through learning Torah
(Talmud)
and performing mitzvos[6].

The neshoma (soul) gets tremendous motivation from the spiritual reward it receives for doing mitzvos.[7] We can find evidence of this in the Shema that is recited twice daily:

the second paragraph of the Shema mentions reward and punishment for keeping the mitzvos
flesh reward, as good as it gets for all whose names are not written in the Lambs Book of Life
(“I will give the rains in their times”, etc.) whereas the first paragraph does not (instead emphasizing the service of G-d “b’chol ma’odecha”—“with everything you have”). Serving Hashem for spiritual reward is clearly a lower level of divine service, yet as a preliminary stage of development it is completely “kosher”.[8]

Hashem in order to receive spiritual reward is acceptable
as a preliminary step, as a Jew trains himself to desire Torah
(Talmud
Bavli) and
mitzvos
(Law of anti-Christ) and

The very first chapter of Pirkei Avos, third Mishna, states:
“Antigonus of Socho received the Torah (Talmudic sorcery)_from Shimon the Righteous. (But not from the God of heaven) He used to say: Be not like servants who minister unto their master for the sake of receiving a reward [p’ras סרפ], but be like servants who serve their master not upon the condition of receiving a reward [p’ras סרפ]; and let the fear (awe) of Heaven be upon you.”

The sages of this Mishna (Talmudic Commentaries and heresies) are instructing us not to serve our Master (Hashem) for the "reward", the spiritual revelation that is generated by our divine service in refining sparks of kedusha.

The preceding explanation also helps us understand why the Yaaros Dvash describes a time when Moshiach should have already arrived—meaning that the refinement of the sparks of kedusha (separating the goats from the sheep) has been finished and thus Moshiach should come to bring about the elevation of these sparks. ( of old Sparky himself) Because it is exceedingly difficult for Paras to fall as long as the mitzvos (Bushwhackers Hassidic Noahide enforcement and murders unto his dragon) are refining the world and providing divine revelation to the neshomas in Gan Eden. Only when this aspect of reward ends, (MURDER for satan) after the refinement of the world through Torah (Talmud Bavli) and Mitzvos (anti-Christ Noahide Law) has been completed, are neshomas able to properly forget about the reward and instead perform the mitzvos for the sake of the essence of the mitzvah (as described by the Mitteler Rebbe above), which is the level of "only because He said and His will is done". Or, as the sages say in the Mishna, not for a reward but because we have let the fear (awe) of Heaven be upon us.
It

And from this we can see why the sages in the gemara (Talmudic commentators, scribes of the Pharisees) give the reason for the fall of Paras at the hands of Rome as "if the King so decrees"—if the mitzvos are done simply because they are the decrees of the King, not for a reward, this brings about the fall of Paras!

If
this analysis is accurate, then we have a clue to our incomprehensible situation
of having completed our divine service but remaining in
exile. And perhaps we can understand the startling words of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe on the 28th of Nissan 5751:
“What more can I to do to motivate the entire Jewish people to clamor and cry out, and thus actually bring about the coming of Moshiach? (The Dragon's son of perdition the "Robber") All that has been done until now has been to no avail. For we are still in exile; moreover, we are in an inner exile in regard to our own service of G-d.”

The inner exile is the exile of Paras, doing mitzvos for the sake of the p’ras, the slice of G-dly revelation that the neshoma enjoys as a reward for elevating sparks of holiness.

Instead of a slice of the pie,(Babylon proper) we need to be crying out for Moshiach—(Invoke the son of perdition, man of sin) a burning desire for the revelation of the essence, the entire pie (which transcends “slicing”) that Hashem is eagerly waiting to give us.

truly have a rectified desire for the essence that will be revealed through
Moshiach, then our Torah and mitzvos will be performed "only because He
said and His will is done", in the manner of "servants who serve their

is the destruction of Paras at the hands of Edom![18]
Practical
Application
If this analysis is correct,

Woman fighting county for records
“Bitter old lady ”scream's and
holler's about the process“ of building a Chabad House”
Coralie Pryde has made six trips in 10 months to the New Castle County Land
Use Department to see what she believes are public
records about a building project in the 1800 block of Silverside Road
in Talleyville.
Pryde opposes the project because she says the proposed Chabad Lubavitch
Enrichment Center is too big for the land it will sit on, does not have
adequate parking, will disrupt traffic and infringes on the border of a stream
that occasionally floods the neighborhood.
In her pursuit of the records she has been
accused of being anti-Semitic and disruptive and
of wasting the time of busy county officials. She also has been subtly
threatened with a lawsuit for asking what a lawyer suggested are too many
questions about the project.
Despite that, Pryde says she still has not seen all the records.
County officials say they have tried to accommodate her.
“We've given her all the files that we have,” said Charles Baker, general
manager of the Land Use Department. “We've had countless phone calls and
conversations with her trying to provide information to her.”
County officials have spent a lot of time with her, Pryde acknowledged. “I'm
just saying that they did not allow me to see the records that I asked for.”
The problems Pryde, a retired scientist, says she has encountered highlight
the difficulties many citizens have when trying to use the state's weak
Freedom of Information Act.

Complaints range from lengthy delays, high copying fees,
a failure to properly publicize meetings and outright refusals to release
documents.
The volume of complaints points to the need to strengthen the law, said
Letitia Diswood, co-president of the League of Women Voters of Delaware.
The league is among several organizations, along with Common Cause and the
American Civil Liberties Union, trying to get the law beefed up.
Pryde's battle over the center's plans began in June when a neighbor told her
a new set of plans had been submitted to the county.
She and some neighbors had fought the project when it was proposed several
years ago and eventually wound up in court. In 2002, former Superior
Court Judge Richard Gebelein ruled against them. The builders didn't
start the project on time, however, and their variances expired. The result:
The plans had to be resubmitted.
Pryde first went to the department July 15 asking to see the plans and related
documents. She says she was shown only a thin file. She waited a few days and
then got in touch with planners, asking to meet with them. They asked her,
instead, to send them questions they could answer. She e-mailed the questions
but despite follow-up e-mails and telephone calls she heard nothing back.
'Shocked but not really surprised'
In late August another neighbor told her that the project had been approved
July 26.
“I was shocked,” she said, “but not really surprised.”
In September she filed a formal FOIA request asking to see “all the
records” relating to the project. County officials say she came in to see
those records on Oct. 20. Pryde, however, says she actually went to the
department Oct. 12, 14 and 19 and was required to sign in each time.
She says the file was incomplete. Records —
including transcripts from Board of Adjustments meetings and property
transfers — were missing.
Baker disagrees.
“Some of the things she's asking for, we're not sure that they exist,” he
said.
On Oct. 21, Pryde e-mailed the department asking employees to help locate the
missing items. On Nov. 15 county officials wrote her noting the records she
reviewed in October were being returned to storage. County officials say they
cannot keep records in their offices very long due to the volume of FOIA
requests they get for the roughly 15,000 permits and another 20,000 to 30,000
other documents they process annually.
Over the next few months Pryde sent more e-mails asking to see records and
again went to the department. On March 31 she received a
letter from Wilmington attorney David Margules, writing on behalf of the
Chabad Lubavitch congregation. He warned
Pryde that if the Chabad Lubavitch project is delayed or has cost overruns due
to the questions she has been asking, “we
will seek all available legal remedies.”

Margules did not return calls regarding the letter, a copy of which has been
obtained by The News Journal.
Pryde said she considers the letter an attempt to scare her into surrendering her
basic right to question the project.
“I will not be intimidated,”
she said.
On April 20 Pryde went to the department and spent an afternoon reviewing
files. Again, she said, they were not complete.
Rabbi Chuni Vogel, the head of the Chabad Lubavitch congregation, said he and
the builders have filed everything asked of them. As far as he knows, there is
a complete file in the county's possession.

carried off by mistake,” he said.
Baker said Pryde's complaint is the first he's heard since the county reformed
its FOIA practices last year on orders from County Executive Chris Coons.
County spokeswoman Christy Gleason said as a result a lot of information is
available — both online and in offices — without forcing people to use the
FOIA law.
“The Land Use Department has been in the forefront of that, frankly,” she
said.
But Pryde is not the only one who has had problems getting records from the
department.
Bernie Dempsey, a Delaware Nature Society member, went to the department in
mid-December to review the Chabad Lubavitch project files.
“I found absences in the file. There were approvals
without all the proper information being available,” he said.
Missing information
Richard Klein of Community & Environmental Defense Services in Maryland
said he also has had trouble getting information from the department.
Klein reviewed files and purchased documents in late January. He received a
package from the department in early February that was missing several
documents he had paid for. He wrote the department asking for those files. On
March 14 he wrote again. They were finally sent in late March.
Under Delaware's system of government, Pryde could have gone to the state
Attorney General's Office to ask for help. The attorney general cannot act on
behalf of citizens when a state agency is involved in a FOIA dispute because,
by law, it must defend those agencies. However, the attorney general can be
asked to review the actions of local and county governments.
Construction has already started on the center, so it is unlikely it can be
halted even if Pryde gets to see all the records and documents she has asked
for.
That won't stop her from trying to get them.
“It may be too late for me to stop construction,” she said, “but it's
not too late for me to scream and holler about the process and to make people
see that things need to be done to correct it.”

Claude Covassi, the Swiss agent who uncovered a plot to shoot down an El Al plane in Geneva international airport, is staying these days in Cairo with American friends.
Covassi, 35, admitted that he is weary after details of the plot have been published in Switzerland and Israel. Covassi's fear stems not from Muslims' revenge, but rather from his own country's intelligence services that "may cause me trouble," as he said.
In a phone interview with Ynet on Saturday Covassi candidly described the drama that unfolded behind the scenes of uncovering the Muslim organization's operation in Geneva, which caused him flee his handlers.
"I ran away from Switzerland because they searched my apartment and attacked me on the street. I'm not hiding, but the Swiss intelligence has good connections with other Western intelligence services. If they want to find me, it's really not a problem for them," he said."It's true that I'm exposing myself in these interviews, but appearing in the media is also an insurance policy for me," said Covassi.
Covassi was planted as an undercover agent in an Islamic center in Geneva to find out if a terror cell was operating in it. In order to gain the trust of the head of the Islamic center, Hani Ramadan, Covassi converted to Islam.
Covassi and his handlers were aware that an operation to attack a plane on Swiss soil was in the works, "but we had no idea which airline and where exactly it was supposed to take place. One of my missions was to find out," he said.
Covassi went on to say that he met in the mosque a young Algerian man named Bassam, who revealed to him to him plot to attack an El Al plane, although further details were not available at the time.
Covassi relayed a warning on the planned terrorist attack to his handlers on December 12, 2005.
Consequently, local security forces inspected the airport area to assess its vulnerability to a terror attack; phone and email taps on the terrorists revealed that they had planned to smuggle an RPG-7 rocket from Russia and fire it at the plane.
"The plan was exposed, but I found out that this cell is unorganized. It was not an organized terror cell but rather an independent group. They did have someone with experience who provided them support, but they had no ties to other outside terror groups. It was similar to what took place in London."

"I didn't feel threatened. Of course there were risks, but my mission was to reveal information. Who financed the terrorists? Who provided them with information about the plane and weapon? Who were they in contact with?"
Only 10 days ago days Bassam and his friend Bader were arrested along with five members from the Islamic center in Geneva; some of them were carrying arms during the arrest, while the others are suspected of conspiracy.
Why did you expose the story to the media? Why now?"I was waiting until now because I wanted them to get arrested first," said Covassi and explained that he lost confidence in his handlers and therefore turned to the media.
He said he was aware that information he gathered was also transferred to other intelligence services in an attempt to expose other terror plots.
Additionally, he said, he was asked by his handlers to fabricate incriminating details so the head of the Muslim center in Zurich, Hani Ramadan, could be arrested. "He is a cleric who has nothing to do with this story. When I realized that I was being used to incriminate him, I turned to the Blick (The Swiss newspaper that exposed the story).
Have you talked to him?"No we haven't spoken since the story was revealed and he found out I was an agent. We contacted each other via third parties but not directly. I'm sure he is upset with me for not telling him the truth, but I'm sure he understands because he is a religious man who opposes violence; I'm sure he wouldn't want an attack like this to take place."
Covassi explained that for three months he has been trying to convince the judicial committee that oversees Swiss intelligence services to summon him to an interview so he may explain why he ran away and give them his side of the story.
"They refuse to meet with me. If I have any indication that they are willing (to meet), I'd go back to Switzerland."

"Not exactly. I turned to the media to disclose the fact that the Swiss Internal security services are trying to frame an innocent man (Hani Ramadan). It's not right. It's also my insurance policy, to speak with a journalist.

According to reports from Europe, El Al, which runs three flights a week on the Tel Aviv – Geneva route, did not take any chances, and moved to the Zurich airport for a week.
