Oil hits record $72 on Iran fears

LONDON (Reuters) - Oil hit a record $72.20 a barrel on Tuesday as Iran defied world pressure to halt its nuclear program, raising new fears of a cut in supplies from the world's fourth biggest crude exporter.

In London, North Sea Brent crude oil jumped 74 cents to set the new all-time high as Iran and the West exchanged increasingly sharp words over the Islamic Republic's determination to push ahead with uranium enrichment.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed to $70.88, smashing through its previous record of $70.85. At 1232 GMT Brent was up 42 cents at $71.88. WTI was up 35 cents at $70.74.

"The Iranian situation is making us all very nervous... We don't seem to be getting anywhere on the diplomatic solutions," said Deborah White, an analyst at SGCIB in Paris.

Iran is not the market's only concern.

With almost a quarter of Nigerian oil production still shut after rebel attacks two months ago, oil consumers feel almost as vulnerable as they did during the Arab oil embargo in the 1970s.

Oil prices have soared from $20 at the start of 2002 and are now nearing the inflation-adjusted peaks of over $80 hit in 1980, the year after the Iranian revolution.

Hot Temperatures Force Blackouts in Texas

HOUSTON (AP) -- Faced with the prospect of another day of record heat, the state's power suppliers urged Texans to cut down on their electricity use in the hopes of avoiding more rolling blackouts.

Power companies throughout the state imposed the blackouts Monday because of an electricity shortage during unseasonably hot weather. Thousands of people were caught without electricity for short periods of time as highs reached into the low 100s, and police rushed to direct traffic during the afternoon rush hour.

Highs were expected to reach into the upper 90s on Tuesday before returning to a more normal range in the 70s and 80s on Wednesday.

"We are asking everybody to pitch in and do the best they can by minimizing electric consumption between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., the peak hours," said Paul Wattles, spokesman for Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which runs the state's electricity grid.

Israel Warns of New 'Axis of Terror'

Israel warned Monday that a new "axis of terror" _ Iran, Syria and the Hamas-run Palestinian government _ is sowing the seeds of the first world war of the 21st century. The Palestinians accused Israel of an escalating military campaign using indiscriminate force to kill civilians and entrench its occupation.

The Israeli and Palestinian envoys traded charges at an open Security Council meeting held in response to the recent upsurge in Israeli attacks in Gaza. It took place on a day that a Palestinian suicide bomber struck a packed fast-food restaurant in Tel Aviv, killing nine people in the deadliest bombing in more than a year.

Recent statements by the Palestinian government, Iran and Syria, including one by Hamas on Monday defending the suicide bombing, "are clear declarations of war, and I urge each and every one of you to listen carefully and take them at face value," said Israel's U.N. Ambassador Dan Gillerman.

Olmert weighs response

Israel debated a possible assault on the Hamas-led Palestinian Authority. Prime Minister-elect Ehud Olmert convened his interim cabinet and security chiefs Tuesday to discuss a response to the first suicide bombing in Israel since Hamas took power three weeks ago. Monday´s attack, which killed nine people, was carried out by Islamic Jihad and described by Hamas as "self-defense". That prompted the Israeli military to recommend that the Palestinian Authority be treated as an enemy state, a de facto green light for an armed offensive. But political sources said Olmert, who is busy trying to build a coalition government, may hold off on serious retaliation for fear of undermining U.S.-led efforts to isolate the Hamas government.

New JTS head favors gay rabbis,
but calls halachah ‘non-negotiable’

NEW YORK, April 11 (JTA) — In his first interview with the U.S. Jewish media after being named the next chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, Arnold Eisen told JTA he favors allowing gays and lesbians to become Conservative rabbis.

“My personal opinion is that I would like to see these processes end up with the ordination of gays and lesbians,” he said. “But I might be outvoted.”

The Conservative movement in recent years has been roiled by this hot-button issue. The movement’s central halachic authority, the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards, has debated the issue at length and has scheduled a vote for December.

Still, Eisen said, despite pressures to resolve the issue, a change cannot simply be imposed from above.

“There’s got to be halachic process,” he said. “You have to preserve the integrity, the authenticity of halachah.”

“The halachic process is non-negotiable,” he added.

Eisen, 54, advocated a robust discussion among seminary faculty on homosexuality’s place in the Conservative movement. He pointed out that such a discussion preceded the seminary’s decision to ordain women in 1983.

“The faculty is going to have to decide how it wants to think about this issue,” he said. “I just want to have a discussion. I just want to know how my colleagues feel about this.”

A sociologist who has focused largely on American Jewry, Eisen officially was tapped as chancellor Monday following a lengthy search. He will succeed Rabbi Ismar Schorsch, who will step down in June after two decades in the position.

Eisen will serve a year as chancellor-designate before taking the reins full time in July 2007. He comes to JTS at a time of some uncertainty for the movement: Conservative Judaism faces dwindling numbers, a debate on the homosexuality issue and a struggle to articulate a unified vision.

As a Jewish studies professor and chairman of Stanford University’s Religious Studies Department, and as a frequent traveler to congregations around the United States, Eisen is well-acquainted with the American Jewish community. He is not a rabbi, however, and will be just the second seminary head without rabbinical ordination in JTS’ 120-year history.

Some Conservative rabbis have expressed concern about the fact that a position sometimes likened to the movement’s de facto chief rabbi will be filled by a non-rabbi. Eisen says he understands the concerns.

Some within the movement have suggested that the chancellor’s role as a halachic voice could be transferred elsewhere: perhaps to the head of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the movement’s synagogue arm; the head of the Rabbinical Assembly, the rabbinical arm; or a newly created position like a mara d’atra, a local halachic authority.

Eisen declined to speculate on whom this position might fall to. But he stressed that movement rabbis will find him to be a strong ally.

“I’m not one of these scholars who doesn’t care about the rabbinate,” he said. “You’re going to find me a super-supportive chancellor for rabbinical students.”

“I think this is going to be good for the rabbis,” he said.

Eisen said he imagined a rabbinical school graduation ceremony in which he will ordain the movement’s newest spiritual leaders “as a representative of the Jewish people and the Conservative movement in America,” rather than as a rabbi ordaining another rabbi.

“I am a member of the communities they’re going to be serving,” he said. “And I like the symbolism of me representing these communities in ordaining these rabbis.”

Eisen said the major challenge facing the movement is getting unconnected Conservative Jews involved.

“How do you get them to be part of Jewish communities? How do you connect them?” he asks. “There’s a membership crisis” in the Conservative movement, which in recent years has been overtaken numerically by the Reform movement. “But to me, with Jews in general, everybody worries about the declining numbers — but half the Jews we have are not connected.”

“With camps, with schools, with synagogues, the challenge is to make the meaning so real, so palpable that people want to come back for more.”

Historically, Conservative Judaism arose as a middle-ground between traditional Orthodox Judaism and American modernity — a function that is no longer needed.

“No Jews anymore have trouble being fully a part of American life, and many Jews don’t know about tradition,” he said. “So you have to attract them from Square One. You have to persuade them that this way of being is a good, substantial way of leading a Jewish life.”

Eisen said his first responsibility as chancellor will be to the seminary rather than the movement as a whole: There will be a focus on scholarship, on applying that scholarship to Jewish life, on training students in each of JTS’ schools and in raising funds necessary to accomplish these goals, he said.

Still, he said, he hopes to play a role in the Conservative movement at large.

“One of my goals for the Conservative movement is that I want there to be a stronger leadership,” he said, adding that leaders of movement branches need better resources. “I’m hoping to get many of my colleagues more involved in the Conservative movement than they have been.”

He also said he believes the movement’s rank-and-file could play a broader role.

“We have people who are leaders in every area of life sitting in our congregations,” he said. “They could make a contribution to the movement by bringing their expertises into dialogue with Judaism.”

Eisen also lamented what he said was a growing chasm between U.S. and Israeli Jewry, and said that as one of the leading American Jewish institutions, the seminary could play an important role in bridging the gap.

Movement insiders also have complained that Conservative Jewry has not articulated a coherent message to take into the world. Eisen agreed that this has been a concern, and suggested that the movement ought to articulate “a message of substance and ethics and Torah.” and Sodomy

The problem, he said, is that many Jews believe that by observing mitzvot, or Jewish laws, they give up their autonomy.

“This is, frankly, nonsense,” he said. “The message that mitzvah is far more wonderful than that, this message has not reached most Conservative Jews, unfortunately.”

That’s because many of them lack the background to understand this, he said. As such, education will play an important role in rectifying this misconception — and not just traditional education, but experience.

“You have to give them positive experiences time after time,” he said.

After years blasting Israel, Europe
changes its tune after Hamas victory

BRUSSELS, April 11 (JTA) — Hamas’ takeover of the Palestinian Authority is changing European attitudes toward the Middle East.

After years of praising the Palestinians and blasting Israel, the Europeans this week froze much of the half-billion or more dollars they give to the Palestinian Authority, a consequence of Hamas’ victory in P.A. legislative elections in January.

European leaders say they’ll seek alternatives to allow “humanitarian” aid — for electricity, food, education and other projects — to continue flowing. Seeking to distinguish between the Palestinian people and the government they elected, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the E.U.’s external relations commissioner, said the European Union would come up with other funding ideas, but was not yet ready to outline them.

Still, something profound has shifted. When the Palestinians began their intifada in September 2000, most Europeans blamed Israel. Even when Palestinian suicide bombers terrorized Israeli cities, the Europeans seemed to spend most of their time criticizing Israel for its reprisals and for building a security barrier in the West Bank.

This time, Europeans have begun blaming Palestinian radicals. The European Union labels Hamas a terrorist organization, a designation that bars E.U. officials from dealing with the group.

Europeans insist that Hamas must renounce violence, recognize Israel’s right to exist and uphold previous Palestinian agreements with Israel.

In a draft of a statement, European foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg said they “noted with grave concern that the program of the new Palestinian government does not contain a clear commitment to (these) three principles.” E.U. foreign policy chief Javier Solana added that the Palestinian Authority must take a clear decision against violence.

The harder line illustrates more than just disgust with Hamas; it underlines how the European worldview has changed in the past few years.

Until recently, the widespread feeling here was that the United States and Israel overreacted to Islamic terrorism. But now terrorism has struck hard in Europe, in Madrid in March 2004 — with bombs on a series of commuter trains — and then with synchronized bombings on London public transport last July.

More recently, the violent reaction in the Middle East to a series of Danish cartoons on the Prophet Mohammed caused many Europeans to believe that the Arab world does not share their values, beginning with a commitment to freedom of expression.

To be sure, many in Europe continue to criticize Israel’s security barrier and Olmert’s talk of unilaterally drawing Israel’s eastern border without negotiating with the Palestinians. In a statement Monday, European foreign ministers urged Israel “to desist from any action that is contrary to international law.”

But that gentle nudge is much less noticeable than the pocketbook pressure on the Palestinians. The European Union is the Palestinians’ largest donor, with annual European aid totaling around $615 million, or about a third of the P.A.’s total budget.

About half of that aid comes from the European Union itself, and half from the governments of the 25 E.U. member nations. Some of those governments, led by the United Kingdom, Denmark and the Netherlands, have frozen their individual aid packages as well.

The aid cutoff could help restore European power in the Middle East. Traditionally, the Europeans have had little leverage with Israel, which has dismissed them as biased, and they have been hesitant to exert pressure on the Palestinians.

Maybe now, Israel and the United States will consider giving Europe a little more say.

Who is behind "Al Qaeda in Iraq"? Pentagon acknowledges fabricating a "Zarqawi Legend"

Abu Musab Al Zarqawi has been presented both by the Bush administration and the Western media as the mastermind behind the "insurgency" in Iraq, allegedly responsible for the massacres of Iraqi civilians.

Zarqawi is the outside enemy of America. The Bush administration in official statements, including presidential speeches, national security documents, etc. has repeatedly pointed to the need to "go after"  Abu Musab Al Zarqawi and Osama bin Laden.

 

"You know, I hate to predict violence, but I just understand the nature of the killers. This guy, Zarqawi, an al Qaeda associate -- who was in Baghdad, by the way, prior to the removal of Saddam Hussein -- is still at large in Iraq. And as you might remember, part of his operational plan was to sow violence and discord amongst the various groups in Iraq by cold- blooded killing. And we need to help find Zarqawi so that the people of Iraq can have a more bright -- bright future." (George W. Bush, Press Conference, 1 June 2004)

The official mandate of US and British occupation forces is to fight and win the "war on terrorism" on behalf of the Iraqi people. Zarqawi constitutes Washington's justification for the continued military occupation of Iraq, not to mention the brutal siege of densely populated urban areas  directed against "Al Qaeda in Iraq"  which is said to be led by Zarqawi. 

Coalition forces are upheld as playing a "peace keeping role" in consultation with the United Nations.  The Western media in chorus has consistently upheld the legitimacy of the "war on terrorism". It has not only presented Zarqawi as a brutal terrorist, it has also failed to report on the Pentagon's disinformation campaign, which has been known and documented since 2002.   

Pentagon PSYOP Zarqawi Program

In an unusual twist, the Washington Post in a recent article, has acknowledged that the role of  Zarqawi had been deliberately "magnified" by the Pentagon with a view to galvanizing  public support for the US-UK led "war on terrorism":  

"The Zarqawi campaign is discussed in several of the internal military documents. "Villainize Zarqawi/leverage xenophobia response," one U.S. military briefing from 2004 stated. It listed three methods: "Media operations," "Special Ops (626)" (a reference to Task Force 626, an elite U.S. military unit assigned primarily to hunt in Iraq for senior officials in Hussein's government) and "PSYOP," the U.S. military term for propaganda work..." (WP. 10 April 2006)

The military's propaganda program, according to the Washington Post, has "largely been aimed at Iraqis, but seems to have spilled over into the U.S. media. One briefing slide about U.S. "strategic communications" in Iraq, prepared for Army Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the top U.S. commander in Iraq, describes the "home audience" as one of six major targets of the American side of the war." (WP, op cit.)

An internal document produced by U.S. military headquarters in Iraq, states that "the Zarqawi PSYOP program is the most successful information campaign to date." (WP, op cit).

The senior commander entrusted with Pentagon's PSYOP operation is General Kimmitt who now occupies the position of senior planner at US Central Command (USCENTCOM), responsible for directing operations in Iraq and the Middle East.

"In 2003 and 2004, he coordinated public affairs, information operations and psychological operations in Iraq -- though he said in an interview the internal briefing must be mistaken because he did not actually run the psychological operations and could not speak for them. Kimmitt said, "There was clearly an information campaign to raise the public awareness of who Zarqawi was, primarily for the Iraqi audience but also with the international audience."

A goal of the campaign was to drive a wedge into the insurgency by emphasizing Zarqawi's terrorist acts and foreign origin, said officers familiar with the program. "Through aggressive Strategic Communications, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi now represents: Terrorism in Iraq/Foreign Fighters in Iraq/Suffering of Iraqi People (Infrastructure Attacks)/Denial of Iraqi Aspirations," the same briefing asserts...

It is difficult to determine how much has been spent on the Zarqawi campaign, which began two years ago and is believed to be ongoing. U.S. propaganda efforts in Iraq in 2004 cost $24 million, but that included extensive building of offices and residences for troops involved, as well as radio broadcasts and distribution of thousands of leaflets with Zarqawi's face on them, said the officer speaking on background...

The Zarqawi program at the Pentagon was run concurrently with a related operation "led by the Lincoln Group, a U.S. consulting firm, to place pro-U.S. articles in Iraq newspapers, according to the officer familiar with the program who spoke on background." According to The Washington Post, however, there was no relationship between the Pentagon's PSYOP program and that run by the Lincoln Group  on behalf of the Pentagon. (WP, 10 April 2006)

Disinformation and war propaganda are an integral part of military planning. What the Washington Post fails to mention, however, is its own role in sustaining the Zarqawi legend , along with network TV, most of the printed press, and of course CNN and Fox News, not to mention a significant portion of the alternative media. Disinformation regarding the War on terrorism has been fed into the news chain by a limited number of "top feeders": 

A relatively few well-connected correspondents provide the "scoops" that get the coverage in the relatively few mainstream news sources - the four TV networks, TIME, Newsweek, CNN - where the parameters of debate are set and the "official reality" is consecrated for the bottom feeders in the news chain. Zarqawi  has been identified by the US media as being behind the "insurgency" in Fallujah, Tal Afar and Samara. He was held responsible for the Amman hotel bombings as well as terrorist attacks in several Western capitals.. He is indelibly behind the suicide bomb attacks in Iraq as confirmed by the Washington Post: " The ruling Shiite leadership has Zarqawi squarely in its sights. He has led the suicide bombers whose Shiite victims are now climbing into the thousands." ( 11 December 2005). 

The Pentagon's PSYOP is a cover-up for US sponsored atrocities by the US media, which has upheld the "villainize Zarqawi" focus in its news and editorials coverage of the Iraqi resistance movement. 

The top U.S. military intelligence officer in Iraq said Abu Musab Zarqawi and his foreign and Iraqi associates have essentially commandeered the insurgency, becoming the dominant opposition force and the greatest immediate threat to U.S. objectives in the country.

"I think what you really have here is an insurgency that's been hijacked by a terrorist campaign," Army Maj. Gen. Richard Zahner said in an interview. "In part, by Zarqawi becoming the face of this thing, he has certainly gotten the funding, the media and, frankly, has allowed other folks to work along in his draft." (WP, 25 September 2005)

Amid the continuing bloodshed in Iraq, there is evidence of fresh thinking. The change is, ironically, brought about by Abu Musab Zarqawi himself, whose indiscriminate terrorism appears to have succeeded in uniting people there against his global jihad ideology. Since the hotel bombings in Zarqawi's native Jordan, more and more Sunni Iraqis and Arabs have condemned the terrorist leader's nightmarish vision for their societies -- one that promises further "catastrophic" suicide attacks. Immediate withdrawal from Iraq is not an option the U.S. administration can or should entertain. It would give Abu Musab Zarqawi and his small band of foreign fighters the opportunity to claim victory and to announce that they have successfully defeated a superpower. This would strengthen al Qaeda's hand across the Middle East and elsewhere, and lead to greater instability throughout the region. (WP, 11 December 2006)

The US media has identified the nature of the insurgency, centering on the key role of Zarqawi and his ties to the former Baathist regime:

"The backbone of the insurgency appears to be an alliance between the die-hard Baathists and the network of terrorists mostly under the command of Abu Musab Zarqawi. It is a partnership of convenience; both groups are fighting the same battle, but for different reasons and with different goals. (WP,  8 May 2005)

[S]enior officials at the Pentagon and in Iraq say they believe that Mr. Zarqawi and the insurgency's ''center of gravity'' is now in the bends and towns of the Euphrates River valley near the Syrian border.(New York Times, 17 September 2005)

In Fallujah, the siege of the city, which resulted in thousands of civilian deaths was described as a battle against the "Zarqawi network":. 

U.S. forces have conducted four airstrikes on what have been described as targets associated with Zarqawi's network in and around the city. Among them was a housing compound in an agricultural area about 15 miles south of Fallujah where the U.S. military said as many as 90 foreign fighters were meeting. The military said the strike, which occurred on Thursday evening, killed about 60 foreign fighters.

Witnesses and hospital officials disputed the account, saying that about 30 men were killed, many of them Iraqi. They said 15 children and 11 women also died in the attack.

Neither version of the strike could be independently verified.

The following night, the U.S. military said in a statement that it conducted "another successful precision strike" on a meeting of "approximately 10 Zarqawi terrorists" in central Fallujah. "There was no indication that any innocent civilians were in the immediate vicinity of the meeting location," the military said in the statement. (WP, 21 Sept 2004)

Concluding Remarks

If indeed Zarqawi's role was fabricated as part of the Pentagon's PSYOP, what is the accuracy of these media reports?

The internal military documents leaked to Washington Post confirm that the Pentagon is involved in an ongoing propaganda campaign which seeks to  provide a face to the enemy. The purpose is to portray the enemy as a terrorist,  to mislead public opinion. 

Counterterrorism and war propaganda are intertwined. The propaganda apparatus feeds disinformation into the news chain. The objective is to present the terror groups as "enemies of America." responsible for countless atrocities in Iraq and around the World.  The underlying objective is to galvanize public opinion in support of America's Middle East war agenda.

US military-intelligence has created it own terrorist organizations. In turn, it has developed a cohesive multibillion dollar counterterrorism program "to go after" these terrorist organizations. To reach its foreign policy objectives, the images of terrorism in the Iraqi war theater must remain vivid in the minds of the citizens, who are constantly reminded of the terrorist threat. The Iraqi resistance movement is described as terrorists led by Zarqawi. 

The propaganda campaign using the Western media,  presents the portraits of the leaders behind the terror network. In other words, at the level of what constitutes an "advertising" campaign, "it gives a face to terror."  

The "war on terrorism" rests on the creation of one or more evil bogeymen, the terror leaders, Osama bin Laden, Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi, et al, whose names and photos are presented ad nauseam in daily news reports. Without Zarqawi and bin Laden, the "war on terrorism" would loose its raison d'ętre. The main casus belli is to wage a " war on terrorism". 

The Pentagon documents leaked to the Washington Post regarding Zarqawi have revealed that Al Qaeda in Iraq is fabricated.

Organizational structure of the Nascent Sanhedrin

The historical government of the Jewish people involves a bicameral parliamentary system.  This includes the Sanhedrin, a deliberative body similar to the upper house or chamber of a legislature, and an ordinary parallel lower house which represents the needs of the population. 

a) The Sanhedrin is a "House of Scholars". Unlike some parliamentary systems, members of this upper house are not elected, nor is their position permanent.  Any scholar, at any time, may gain a place on the legislature by proving a greater level of scholarship in Jewish Law than a current member of the legislature.

b) At times during Jewish history, a parallel "Congressional Assembly" also existed.  Originally it consisted of the royal court of a constitutional monarchy, but in a democratic society it may consist of an assembly of regionally elected representatives.  Needs of the population were represented demographically; originally according to feudal strength, but in modern times they would be represented by voting power.  The head of the lower house would be the Monarch, Reish Galuta or Prime Minister.  He would have the power to collect taxes and would be the head of the executive branch of government.  He would be subordinate only to the Sanhedrin. 

This ancient bicameral system has had great influence on the organizational structure of many Western European legislatures.

He explains that when Sanhedrin sat, ten (of the most important members) sat in the middle of the group, and they were surrounded by the other sixty. These are the "sixty mighty men *around* the bed of Shlomo. (The ten in the middle correspond to the seven "Ro'ei Pnei ha'Melech" and three "Shomrei ha'Saf," who are closest to the king, in a king's court -- and in the king of king's court -- see Megilah 23a. Crude propaganda posters mirror images from Orwell's 1984

A new poster has been plastered around London over the past few months to remind us that Big Brother is watching in order to keep us all safe.

The poster headline reads simply "Watching over you 24/7" and features giant eyes set into the landscape of the Houses of Parliament in London.

Of course we are being surveilled constantly for our "safety and security" as the sub headline reads. The telephone number below promises unique benefits if you become a member of the London Neighbourhood Watch Association.

Since when was the entirety of London a "neighbourhood"? This is a city with a population of nine million people - do we all need to spy on each other and be constantly watched by cctv cameras in order to be safe and secure?

This new poster is similar in appearance to a previous example that was paraded around bus shelters in London a few years ago.

The "Secure beneath the watchful eyes" poster featured multiple all seeing Horus eyes. In Egyptian mythology Horus presented his eye to Osiris, the god of death, who experienced rebirth in the underworld.

The symbol of the all seeing eye was adopted by the Bavarian Illuminati and has pervaded modern culture.

How ironic or coincidental that the iconic London red bus would shortly down the line once more appear, this time blown to smithereens, despite the helpful and loving watchful eyes.

Even more farcical was the fact that the "investigation" into the July 7 bombings was hindered when it was discovered the CCTV cameras on the bus that blew up were not working.

Britain is acknowledged as the world leader of Orwellian surveillance. An estimated 4.2 million closed-circuit TV cameras observe people going about their everyday business, from getting on a bus to lining up at the bank to driving around London. It's widely estimated that the average Briton is scrutinized by 300 cameras a day.

Authorities maintain the cameras deter crime, despite the fact that police have admitted that they are 'too busy' to watch CCTV, even AFTER a crime has taken place. The outrage of civil libertarians has fallen on deaf ears as the public seems willing to accept the constant monitoring for the greater good.

The Posters are both eerily similar to shots taken from the film re-productions of George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty Four in which a totalitarian government regime rules over the people with an Iron fist and relies on a total surveillance society to scare the population into submission and docility.

The posters are nothing more than crude and simplistic propaganda informing us that we are all under suspicion in this surveillance society. The fact that the in this latest one they feel the need to add the words "security and safety" is an attempt to play down the immediate aggressive and threatening feeling that is instilled upon its viewing.

Other posters that have gone up all over the UK recently inform the population that should they spit in public, on a bus or train for example, then their DNA will be collected and stored on the national database FOREVER.

Under current UK laws, if you are arrested for any recordable offence, police are allowed to take your fingerprints and a sample your DNA. Even if you are subsequently released and found innocent, police can still keep your DNA, which is added to a PERMANENT database.

Worse still, hundreds of thousands of children aged between 10 and 18 have had their DNA added to the database despite never being cautioned or charged for any offence.

How can all this be to protect freedom and ensure our liberty? Some are awakening, but still no one dares to suggest that on our doorstep is a Police State surveillance society that is worse than Nazi Germany or Soviet Russia. We have to speak out now before it's too late, because it can happen and it is happening here.

C. The Talmud

The Talmud is apparently the final authority for deciding the law for all Israel. However:
1) There are many unclear points in the text of the Gemara, mainly because of the interference from the non-Jews who censored the text, and because of difficulties in the understanding of the text which have led to much disagreement and criticism.

Mk:7:9: And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Mk:7:13: Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.


2) This authority is given to the gemara only in the legal realm. However, this is not so with respect to opinions, and views on the existence of the world, science, legends, etc. A person can explain these items in any way, and he will not be considered as having unfit ideas. In the gemara itself there is a notice about errors of Jewish sages versus non-Jewish sages. The Jewish wise men believed that there were cases where the non-Jewish wise were more correct and even agreed that there is wisdom among the nations (Pes. 94:, Moreh Nevuchim, part 3, chapter 14).

Mt:11:19: The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.


D. The Position of the Prophet

When the prophet acts as a wise man, his words are considered as explained in part A of the preface.

Mt:7:15: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.


E. The Sanhedrin

The Torah culture is presently functioning as a cripple. The lack of a Sanhedrin prevents the making of essential decisions in many fields and prevents the updating of numerous legal decisions, since in all legal systems there cannot be explanations or corrections without a supreme authority that is authorized to do so (except for ad hoc local regulations for which there is limited authority). When a Sanhedrin will be formed it will be a deciding factor in the redemption process. The present situation resembles the condition of a society that does not have a high court and does not have enforcement agencies.

The idea of equality is fundamentally a religious concept. This idea is based on the assumption that every person has a soul, which is a Godly spark that cannot be measured. Nevertheless, because of the love of God by Israel, and the desire by Israel to satisfy the Creator, the importance of the idea of equality has decreased and has been nullified relative to the concept of efficiency. The division of tasks in Israel is done not on the basis of equality but on the basis of usefulness to increase the influence of the Torah and even  of the world wide culture. This is the reason that in a war the army operates by definition as a non-egalitarian body. In the army there is no equality of authority.

Rabbi Ariel: Paschal Sacrifice is Still Obligatory

  "It's not a question of 'maybe' or 'if'," says Ramat Gan's Chief Rabbi Yaakov Ariel. "Bringing the Paschal sacrifice is a Torah (Talmudic) obligation incumbent upon the People of Israel these very days."


Speaking with Yoel Yaakobi of the weekly B'Sheva newspaper, Rabbi Ariel said that though there are some grave Halakhic [Jewish legal] problems associated with bringing the Paschal sacrifice, "we have found the solutions, and the obligation is as strong as ever. This is [one of the only two positive Biblical commandments] that those who forsake it are liable to receive the ultimate karet [cutting off] punishment. From the moment that a Jew stands on the Temple Mount and the site of the Holy Temple is under our control, the Jewish People are immediately obligated to bring this sacrifice."

Sixteen of the 613 Biblical commandments relate to the Paschal sacrifice, which must be brought on the 14th day of the month of Nissan - Passover eve

 - and eaten on the night of the 15th. Today, this sacrifice is remembered only in the form of the Afikoman, the piece of matzah snatched and hidden by children during the Pesach seder meal, by the small roasted shank-bone on the Seder plate, and by prayers and study.

Rituals

Rabbi Ariel said, "After the destruction of the First Temple, when the Jews began returning from Babylonia to the Holy Land, they brought the Paschal sacrifice during the course of 22 years even though there was no Holy Temple. They also were considered ritually impure - because there was no Red Heifer by which to become pure - yet they still brought it... There is currently no genuine impediment to bringing the Paschal sacrifice."

There have been other attempts to renew this sacrifice over the years, or at least to solve the Halakhic problems involved. Speaking about the rabbis who came to the Holy Land 700 years ago and sought to pave the way to offer the Pesach lamb, Rabbi Ariel said,
"It is simply disgraceful when we compare our actions with theirs. They were here after the Crusaders, when there were perhaps 1,000 Jews in the whole land, which was totally desolate, and tried to renew this commandment. And yet we have 5-6 million Jews, and we have an army with tanks and planes, and what are we doing? ... Over 2,000 years ago, the Jews were afraid to live in Jerusalem, yet they made it obligatory for one out of every ten men to work towards building the Holy Temple, and they started the sacrifice services amidst the ruins of the First Temple. And where are we? Should we not be ashamed?"

Among the problems that Rabbi Ariel says have been solved by the Temple Institute he heads in Jerusalem are the following: Ritual impurity (which applies only to individuals, not to the entire nation), the precise location of the altar, and the sacred priestly garments, which the Institute has recently completed fashioning according to Biblical requirements. He emphasizes, of course, that the exact details of these and other issues are complex and must be reviewed with rabbinical experts. "I don't say that there aren't problems, but as the Maharatz Chayut has written, there is no Halakhic problem in the Temple that cannot be solved."

"Why then do you not go and sacrifice the Pesach sacrifice yourself?" Rabbi Ariel was asked.

"Have you just now returned from the moon?" he answered with pain. "The government has established a special police unit just for the Temple Mount. A Jew is forbidden even to move his lips there - and you want me to go there with my sheep and building tools to build an altar?!...

"The problem, which has received the silent backing of the rabbinical world, is that we have allowed the Arabs to be in charge of the Mount, and so they play soccer there. That's what happened when Moshe Dayan gave the Temple Mount keys to the Arabs [after the Six Day War]. First they give them the keys, then they say, 'It's impossible [to regain control],' and then they say, 'We don't know [all the details of the Temple Mount and the altar, etc.].' The 200 commandments that are connected with the Temple cry out every day, 'Jews, where are you?!'"

Democratic Congressmen ask Bush about reports of US military operations in Iran

Two Democratic Congressmen have written letters to President Bush on the heels of a growing number of news reports that American forces may have already begun military operations in Iran, RAW STORY has found.

Both House members express concern that if the stories are true, then the president may have acted unilaterally without first obtaining proper authorization from Congress.

"Recently, it has been reported that U.S. troops are conducting military operations in Iran," wrote Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) last Friday. Kucinich is the Ranking Democrat on the House Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations.

"If true, it appears that you have already made the decision to commit U.S. military forces to a unilateral conflict with Iran, even before direct or indirect negotiations with the government of Iran had been attempted, without UN support and without authorization from the U.S. Congress," Kucinich continued.

Congressman Peter DeFazio (D-OR) intends to introduce a resolution "expressing the sense of the Congress that the President cannot initiate military action against Iran without congressional authorization" soon, and is forwarding his letter to other House members to collect additional signatures.

"We are writing to remind you that you are constitutionally bound to seek congressional authorization before launching any preventive military strikes against Iran," DeFazio writes.

Citing Article II, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution ("The President shall be the Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into actual Service of the United States..."), DeFazio attacks the administration's frequent interpretation of the clause to historically justify unilateral military actions by presidents without authorization of Congress.

"Contrary to your Administration's broad reading, nothing in the history of the "Commander-in-Chief" clause suggests that the authors of the provision intended it to grant the Executive Branch the authority to engage U.S. forces in military action whenever and wherever it sees fit without any prior authorization from Congress," writes DeFazio.

"The founders of our country intended this power to allow the President to repel sudden attacks and immediate threats, not to unilaterally launch, without congressional approval, large-scale preventive military actions against foreign threats that are likely years away from materializing," DeFazio adds.

Furthermore, it places U.S. troops occupying neighboring Iraq in greater danger. The achievement of stability and a transition to Iraqi security control will be compromised, reversing any progress that has been cited by the Administration.

It would be hard to believe that such an imprudent decision had been taken, but for the number and variety of sources confirming it. In the last week, the national media have reported that you have in fact commenced a military operation in Iran. Today, retired Air Force Col. Sam Gardiner related on CNN that the Iranian Ambassador to the IAEA, Aliasghar Soltaniyeh, reported to him that the Iranians have captured dissident forces who have confessed to working with U.S. troops in Iran. Earlier in the week, Seymour Hersh reported that a U.S. source had told him that U.S. marines were operating in the Baluchi, Azeri and Kurdish regions of Iran.

Any military deployment to Iran would constitute an urgent matter of national significance. I urge you to report immediately to Congress on all activities involving American forces in Iran. I look forward to a prompt response.

We are concerned by the growing number of stories that your Administration is planning for military action against Iran. We are writing to remind you that you are constitutionally bound to seek congressional authorization before launching any preventive military strikes against Iran.

As you know, Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power "to declare war," to lay and collect taxes to "provide for the common defense" and general welfare of the United States, to "raise and support armies," to "provide and maintain a navy," to "make rules for the regulation for the land and naval forces," to "provide for calling forth the militia to execute the laws of the Union, suppress insurrections and repel invasions," to "provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the militia," and to "make all laws necessary and proper for carrying into execution...all...powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States." Congress is also given exclusive power over the purse. The Constitution says, "No money shall be drawn from the Treasury but in consequence of appropriations made by law."

By contrast, the sole war powers granted to the Executive Branch through the President can be found in Article II, Section 2, which states, "The President shall be the Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into actual Service of the United States..."

Your Administration has argued that this "Commander-in-Chief" clause grants the President wide latitude to engage U.S. military forces abroad without prior authorization from Congress. You further argue that previous unilateral actions by presidents of both political parties add credence to your interpretation of the U.S. Constitution.

Contrary to your Administration's broad reading, nothing in the history of the "Commander-in-Chief" clause suggests that the authors of the provision intended it to grant the Executive Branch the authority to engage U.S. forces in military action whenever and wherever it sees fit without any prior authorization from Congress. The founders of our country intended this power to allow the President to repel sudden attacks and immediate threats, not to unilaterally launch, without congressional approval, large-scale preventive military actions against foreign threats that are likely years away from materializing. With respect to Iran, according to the most definitive U.S. intelligence report, Iran is likely a decade away from developing a nuclear weapon. Even the most pessimistic analysis by outside experts puts the timeline at least three years away, but that's only if everything in Iran's development program proceeds flawlessly, which would defy the history of nuclear programs around the world, including Iran's.

The architects of the U.S. Constitution were well aware of government models, like the monarchy in Great Britain, which vested the power to go to war with the head of state. Instead, the Founding Fathers made a conscious decision to grant the solemn war-making powers to the Legislative Branch. The intent of the authors of the U.S. Constitution is clear.

In the Federalist Paper Number 69, while comparing the lesser war-making power of the U.S. president versus the King of Great Britain, Alexander Hamilton wrote, "...the President is to be commander-in-chief of the Army and Navy of the United States. In this respect his authority would be nominally the same with that of the King of Great Britain, but in substance much inferior to it. It would amount to nothing more than the supreme command and direction of the military and naval forces, as first General and admiral of the Confederacy; while that of the British king extends to the declaring of war and to raising and regulating of fleets and armies, all which, by the Constitution under consideration, would appertain to the legislature."

James Madison declared that it is necessary to adhere to the "fundamental doctrine of the Constitution that the power to declare war is fully and exclusively vested in the legislature."

In 1793, President George Washington, when considering how to protect inhabitants of the American frontier, instructed his Administration that "no offensive expedition of importance can be undertaken until after [Congress] have deliberated upon the subject, and authorized such a measure."

In 1801, Thomas Jefferson sent a small squadron of frigates to the Mediterranean to protect against possible attacks by the Barbary powers. He told Congress that he was "unauthorized by the Constitution, without the sanction of Congress, to go beyond the line of defense." He further noted that it was up to Congress to authorize "measures of offense also."

While presidents in the latter half of the 20th Century have initiated military action without prior authorization by Congress, "everybody does it" is not a legitimate defense to ignore the plain words of the U.S. Constitution, the clear intent of the authors of the U.S. Constitution, and more than 150 years of legal precedent.

We also want to go on record that the Authorization of Force Resolution (Public Law 107-40) approved by Congress to go after those responsible for the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on our country does not, explicitly or implicitly, extend to authorizing military action against Iran over its nuclear program. The legislation specifically says, "The President is authorized to use all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, or harbored such organizations or persons, in order to prevent any future acts of international terrorism against the United States by such nations, organizations, or persons." There is no evidence that Iran was involved in the September 11, 2001, attacks. Nor is there any evidence that Iran harbored those who were responsible for the attacks.

Further, the Authorization of Force Resolution (Public Law 107-243) approved by Congress to go to war with Iraq does not extend to military action against Iran over its nuclear program. This resolution only authorized you to "(1) defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and (2) enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions regarding Iraq." Like P.L. 107-40, there is no explicit or implicit authorization on the part of Congress in P.L. 107-243 that would allow you to attack Iran without first coming to Congress to seek a new authorization.

When asked about reports of your administration planning for war with Iran, you said on April 10, 2006, "It [prevention] doesn't mean force, necessarily. In this case, it means diplomacy." We agree with the focus on diplomacy. But, we want to be clear, should you decide that force is necessary, seeking congressional authority prior to taking military action against Iran is not discretionary. It is legally and constitutionally necessary.

A poll conducted by the Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg reveals that 48% of Americans would back military action against Iran if the government continues pursuing nuclear technology, RAW STORY has found.

However, a majority (54%) of the poll's respondents indicated that they don't believe President Bush will make the "right decision."

Americans are divided over the prospect of U.S. military action against Iran if the government in Tehran continues to pursue nuclear technology -- and a majority do not trust President Bush to make the "right decision" on that issue, a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll has found.

Asked whether they would support military action if Iran continued to produce material that could be used to develop nuclear weapons, 48 percent of the poll's respondents said yes; 40 percent said no.

If Bush were to order military action, most respondents said they would support airstrikes against Iranian targets, but only about 1 in 4 said they would support the use of U.S. ground troops in Iran.

The findings of the poll, conducted largely before Iran announced Monday that it had enriched uranium for civilian energy generation, reflected public concern about Iran's acquisition of nuclear technology, as well as public division over the best U.S. response.

A solid majority of respondents, 61 percent, said they believed Iran eventually would get nuclear weapons. Only 15 percent said they believed Iran would be prevented from developing nuclear weapons through diplomatic negotiations, and 12 percent said they thought Iran would be stopped through military action.

A comparison of international law and traditional Jewish approaches

The following discussion presents a point of view of international law on the Arab-Israeli conflict, as documented by Mr Jonathan Wenig, with a response to its tenets from the standpoint of Jewish tradition by Rabbi Dr Shimon Cowen. The point at issue is the secular notion that sovereign states make or voluntarily subscribe to laws and processes of adjudication versus the Torah (Talmud Bavli)  view of universal norms of conduct. The second is between legal concepts of the Palestinians’ claim to statehood and the Torah’s (Talmud Babble, fables of the jews)  view of the intrinsic relationship of the Jewish people to the land. The third has to do with the mode of action in international conflict: mutual negotiation as the source of resolution and the halachic ruling as a guide to practical dealing.

Torah as source of the law of nations

The Tradition which Makes the WORD of God of none effect

The sources of modern international law, as documented by Mr Wenig, are customary international law, based on practices which nations chose to observe; an International Court of Justice, to which nations elect to subscribe; the United Nations, the members of which stand in political relationships to one another, where also certain nations possess veto powers; and finally the contractual activity of nations in treaty-making. The common feature of all of these aspects of international law is that they are essentially voluntary; they represent elective commitments of sovereign nations, which are bound to no moral or legal authority above their individual sovereign existences, except to the extent that they chose to subscribe or be bound by one. That authority, at all events, is not absolute.

 

This is the character of modern international law, the law which was formulated and practised in modern times since the Renaissance and the Enlightenment. It corresponds to the political reality of the rise of sovereign national entities. This law was historically preceded by a different political reality and different notions of law. In ancient and medieval times, before the emergence of sovereignty as a universal principle of states, there prevailed a notion of natural law. This was the concept of a concrete morality of universal application which governed states just as municipal or domestic law governs the individuals within a single state.

 

Typically, in its Roman law or medieval canon law expressions, this law was based on universal and immutable principles. The political reality corresponding to this natural law was that of the Roman Empire – the pax Romana (the Roman peace) – and later, the political supremacy of the Catholic Church in medieval Europe. A “natural”, universal morality was to arbitrate the laws of individual states. This was the law of all human beings and all states.

The Law of the saints of Jesus is fulfilled by Salvation, by their Faith. He alone is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. His Law is written in the hearts of HIS Subjects.

 

Judaism also sets forth a substantive law for all humanity. It does not prescribe the exact texture of non-Jewish national practices and regulations but it lays a basic “grid” over human conduct. This is the morality expressed in the seven “Noahide” laws, so called because they were incumbent upon Noah, and are upon all his descendants, general humanity.

If on the other hand, they do not make peace and they do not accept upon themselves the seven Noahide laws, he can resume the serious measures of war.

He enunciated certain criteria in law which might objectively qualify a people for statehood as well as notions of recognition which might constitute a state, and notions of self-determination furnishing them with rights to statehood. The halachic ruling as the guide for practical action

The application of countervailing considerations of danger to life and hostility, or in its positive formulation darchei sholom, paths of peace themselves require halachic supervision. How and when these apply are known to the halachic process and to the insight of the posek. Equally the posek will may tell us, in circumstances, that now is the time to trust in G-d, Who had commanded us in a Divine norm, as the possession and settlement of the land, and that it must be pursued boldly, notwithstanding all sorts of practical misgivings.
