Bodies Found in Wave of Iraqi Violence
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - A major Sunni Arab bloc Thursday suspended talks with Shiite and Kurdish parties on a new government after scores of Sunni mosques were attacked and dozens of bodies found in a wave of reprisal violence following the bombing of a revered Shiite shrine.

Violence continued Thursday with an attack on a Sunni mosque in Baqouba, where eight Iraqi soldiers were killed in a bombing and nearly a dozen people were wounded.
Faced with the grim prospect of sectarian war, the government extended the curfew in Baghdad and Salaheddin province for two days in the wake of Wednesday's attack on the Askariya shrine in Samarra. All leaves for Iraqi soldiers and police were canceled and personnel were ordered to report to their units.
Radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr slammed the Iraqi government and U.S. forces for not protecting the Samarra shrine, also known as the Golden Mosque, and ordered his militia to defend Shiite holy sites across Iraq.
"If the government had real sovereignty, then nothing like this would have happened," al-Sadr said a statement. "Brothers in the Mahdi Army must protect all Shiite shrines and mosques, especially in Samarra."
At least 46 bodies were found scattered across Iraq late Wednesday and early Thursday, many of them shot execution-style and dumped in Shiite-dominated parts of the capital, Baghdad.
They included a prominent Al-Arabiya TV female correspondent and two other Iraqi journalists, who had been covering Wednesday's explosion in Samarra. Their bullet-riddled bodies were found on the outskirts of the mostly Sunni Arab city 60 miles north of Baghdad.
In mostly Shiite Basra, police said militiamen broke into a prison, hauled out 12 inmates, including two Egyptians, two Tunisians, a Libyan, a Saudi and a Turk, and shot them dead in reprisal for the shrine attack. They had been held in Basra after trying to leave the country following the 2004 U.S. attack on the insurgent stronghold of Fallujah.
The destruction of Samarra's gleaming dome of the 1,200-year-old Askariya shrine sent crowds of angry Shiites into the streets. Many included members of al-Sadr's Mahdi Army and other Shiite militias which the U.S. wants abolished.
The hardline Sunni clerical Association of Muslim Scholars said 168 Sunni mosques were attacked, 10 imams killed and 15 abducted. The figures could not be independently confirmed.
In Thursday's violence, unidentified assailants fired machine guns and threw hand grenades at the Abu Ayoub al-Ansari mosque in Baqouba, about 35 miles northeast of Baghdad. At least one mosque employee was killed and two others injured, police said.
The eight Iraqi soldiers died when a bomb exploded near their patrol in the center of the city, the army said.
Also Thursday, thousands of protesters carrying Shiite flags and banners marched through parts of Baghdad and the Shiite holy city of Najaf. Shiite leaders called upon the people of Najaf to go to Samarra to defend the shrine.
Many religious and political leaders called for calm. "We are facing a major conspiracy that is targeting Iraq's unity," President Jalal Talabani said Wednesday. "We should all stand hand in hand to prevent the danger of a civil war."

Talabani, a Kurd, summoned political leaders to a meeting Thursday to ensure the violence does not derail talks aimed at forming a national unity government after December parliamentary elections. The negotiations - which U.S. and Iraqi leaders hope will help dent the deadly Sunni-driven insurgency - have bogged down over sharp differences between Iraq's Shiite, Kurdish and Sunni Arab parties.

Spokesmen for the Iraqi Accordance Front, the main Sunni Arab faction, said they would not attend Talabani's meeting and would freeze talks with Kurdish and Shiite parties pending an apology for reprisal attacks against more Sunni mosques.
"We want a clear condemnation from the government which didn't do enough yesterday to curb those angry mobs," said Dr. Salman al-Jumaili, a member of the Accordance Front. "There was even a kind of cooperation with the government security forces in some places in attacking the Sunni mosques."
U.S. military units in the Baghdad area were told Thursday morning to halt all but essential travel. Commanders feared that convoys might be caught up in demonstrations or road blocks.
President Bush pledged American help to restore the mosque after the bombing, which dealt a severe blow to U.S. efforts to keep Iraq from falling deeper into sectarian violence.

No one was reported injured in the bombing of the shrine in Samarra. But dozens of people, including three Sunni clerics, were killed in the reprisal attacks that followed, mainly in Baghdad and predominantly Shiite provinces to the south.
The country's top Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, sent instructions to his followers forbidding attacks on Sunni mosques and called for seven days of mourning.
But he hinted, as did Vice President Adil Abdul-Mahdi, that religious militias could be given a bigger security role if the government cannot protect holy shrines - an ominous sign of the Shiite reaction ahead

WASHINGTON
The Bush administration secretly required a
company in the United Arab Emirates to cooperate with future U.S.
investigations before approving its takeover of operations at six American
ports, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press. It chose not
to impose other, routine restrictions.
As part of the $6.8 billion purchase, state-owned Dubai Ports World agreed
to reveal records on demand about "foreign operational direction" of
its business at U.S. ports, the documents said. Those records broadly include
details about the design, maintenance or operation of ports and equipment.
The administration did not require Dubai Ports to keep copies of business
records on U.S. soil, where they would be subject to court orders. It also did
not require the company to designate an American citizen to accommodate U.S.
government requests. Outside legal experts said such obligations are routinely
attached to U.S. approvals of foreign sales in other industries.
"They're not lax but they're not draconian," said James Lewis, a
former U.S. official who worked on such agreements. If officials had predicted
the firestorm of criticism over the deal, Lewis said, "they might have
made them sound harder."
The conditions involving the sale of London-based Peninsular and Oriental
Steam Navigation Co. were detailed in U.S. documents marked
"confidential." Such records are regularly guarded as trade secrets,
and it is highly unusual for them to be made public.
The concessions _ described previously by the Homeland
Security Department as unprecedented among maritime companies _ reflect
the close relationship between the United States and the United Arab Emirates.
The revelations about the negotiated conditions came as the White House
acknowledged
President Bush was unaware of the pending sale until the deal had already been
approved by his administration.

Under the deal, the government asked Dubai Ports to operate American
seaports with existing U.S. managers "to the extent possible." It
promised to take "all reasonable steps" to assist the Homeland
Security Department, and it pledged to continue participating in security
programs to stop smuggling and detect illegal shipments of nuclear materials.
The administration required Dubai Ports to designate an executive to handle
requests from the U.S. government, but it did not specify this person's
citizenship.

business" but did not specify a time period or require corporate records
to be housed in the United States. Outside experts familiar with such
agreements said such provisions are routine in other cases.
Bush faces a potential rebellion from leaders of his own party, as well as
a fight from Democrats, over the sale. It puts Dubai Ports in charge of major
terminal operations in New
York, New Jersey, Baltimore, New Orleans, Miami and Philadelphia.
Senate and House leaders urged the president to delay the takeover, which
is set to be finalized in early March. Senate
Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee said the deal raised "serious
questions regarding the safety and security of our homeland." House
Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., asked the president for a moratorium on the
sale until it could be studied further.

Bush personally defended the agreement on Tuesday, but the White House said
he did not know about it until recently. The AP first reported the U.S.
approval of the sale to Dubai Ports on Feb. 11, and many members of Congress
have said they learned about it from the AP.
"I think somebody dropped the ball," said Rep. Vito Fossella, R-N.Y.
"Information should have flowed more freely and more quickly up into the
White House. I think it has been mishandled in terms of coming forward with
adequate information."
At the White House, spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush learned about the
deal "over the last several days," as congressional criticism
escalated. McClellan said it did not rise to the presidential level, but went
through a government review and was determined not to pose a threat.

involved in approving the sale whether there were security concerns.
"Each and every one expressed that they were comfortable with this
transaction going forward," he said.
Commerce Secretary Carlos Guiterrez told the AP the administration was
being thoughtful and deliberate approving the sale.
"We are not reacting emotionally," Guiterrez said in an interview
Wednesday. "That's what I believe our partners from around the world
would like to see from us is that we be thoughtful. That we be deliberate.
That we understand issues before we make a decision."

Bush's Mysterious 'New Programs'

Lindsey Graham suggested to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales a new target for the administration’s domestic operations -- Fifth Columnists, supposedly disloyal Americans who sympathize and collaborate with the enemy.any who are against them, who are WITH the LORD Almighty, Jesus the REDEEMER
“The administration has not only the right, but the duty, in my opinion,
to pursue Fifth Column movements,” Graham, R-S.C., told Gonzales during Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on Feb. 6.“I stand by this President’s ability, inherent to being Commander in Chief, to find out about Fifth Column movements, and
I don’t think you need a warrant to do that,” Graham added, volunteering to work with the administration to draft guidelines for how best to neutralize this alleged threat.
“Senator,” a smiling Gonzales responded, “the President already said we’d be happy to listen to your ideas.”
In less paranoid times, Graham’s comments might be viewed by many Americans as a Republican trying to have it both ways – ingratiating himself to an administration of his own party while seeking some credit from Washington centrists for suggesting Congress should have at least a tiny say in how Bush runs the War on Terror.

But recent developments suggest that the Bush administration may already be contemplating what to do with Americans who are deemed insufficiently loyal or who disseminate information that may be considered helpful to the enemy.

Detention Centers
Plus, there was that curious development in January when the Army Corps of Engineers awarded Halliburton subsidiary Kellogg Brown & Root a $385 million contract to construct detention centers somewhere in the United States, to deal with “an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs,” KBR said. [Market Watch, Jan. 26, 2006]
Later, the New York Times reported that “KBR would build the centers for the Homeland Security Department for an unexpected influx of immigrants, to house people in the event of a natural disaster or for new programs that require additional detention space.” [Feb. 4, 2006]
Like most news stories on the KBR contract, the Times focused on concerns about Halliburton’s reputation for bilking U.S. taxpayers by overcharging for sub-par services.
“It’s hard to believe that the administration has decided to entrust Halliburton with even more taxpayer dollars,” remarked Rep. Henry Waxman, D-California.
Less attention centered on the phrase “rapid development of new programs” and what kind of programs would require a major expansion of detention centers, each capable of holding 5,000 people. Jamie Zuieback, a spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, declined to elaborate on what these “new programs” might be.
Saints of the Living God
Only a few independent journalists, such as Peter Dale Scott and Maureen Farrell, have pursued what the Bush administration might actually be thinking.
Scott speculated that the “detention centers could be used to detain American citizens if the Bush administration were to declare martial law.” He recalled that during the Reagan administration, National Security Council aide Oliver North organized Rex-84 “readiness exercise,” which contemplated the Federal Emergency Management Agency rounding up and detaining 400,000 “refugees,” in the event of “uncontrolled population movements” over the Mexican border into the United States.
Farrell pointed out that because “another terror attack is all but certain, it seems far more likely that the centers would be used for post-911-type detentions of immigrants rather than a sudden deluge” of immigrants flooding across the border.
Vietnam-era whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg said, “Almost certainly this is preparation for a roundup after the next 9/11 for Mid-Easterners, Muslims and possibly dissenters. They’ve already done this on a smaller scale, with the ‘special registration’ detentions of immigrant men from Muslim countries, and with Guantanamo.”
Labor Camps
There also was another little-noticed item posted at the U.S. Army Web site, about the Pentagon’s Civilian Inmate Labor Program. This program “provides Army policy and guidance for establishing civilian inmate labor programs and civilian prison camps on Army installations.”

The Army document, first drafted in 1997, underwent a “rapid action revision” on Jan. 14, 2005. The revision provides a “template for developing agreements” between the Army and corrections facilities for the use of civilian inmate labor on Army installations.
On its face, the Army’s labor program refers to inmates housed in federal, state and local jails. The Army also cites various federal laws that govern the use of civilian labor and provide for the establishment of prison camps in the United States, including a federal statute that authorizes the Attorney General to “establish, equip, and maintain camps upon sites selected by him” and “make available … the services of United States prisoners” to various government departments, including the Department of Defense.
Though the timing of the document’s posting – within the past few weeks –may just be a coincidence, the reference to a “rapid action revision” and the KBR contract’s contemplation of “rapid development of new programs” have raised eyebrows about why this sudden need for urgency.
These developments also are drawing more attention now because of earlier Bush administration policies to involve the Pentagon in “counter-terrorism” operations inside the United States.
Pentagon Surveillance
Despite the Posse Comitatus Act’s prohibitions against U.S. military personnel engaging in domestic law enforcement, the Pentagon has expanded its operations beyond previous boundaries, such as its role in domestic surveillance activities.
The Washington Post has reported that since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, the Defense Department has been creating new agencies that gather and analyze intelligence within the United States. [Washington Post, Nov. 27, 2005]
The White House also is moving to expand the power of the Pentagon’s Counterintelligence Field Activity (CIFA), created three years ago to consolidate counterintelligence operations. The White House proposal would transform CIFA into an office that has authority to investigate crimes such as treason, terrorist sabotage or economic espionage.

The Pentagon also has pushed legislation in Congress that would create an intelligence exception to the Privacy Act, allowing the FBI and others to share information about U.S. citizens with the Pentagon, CIA and other intelligence agencies. But some in the Pentagon don’t seem to think that new laws are even necessary.
In a 2001 Defense Department memo that surfaced in January 2006, the U.S. Army’s top intelligence officer wrote, “Contrary to popular belief, there is no absolute ban on [military] intelligence components collecting U.S. person information.”
Drawing a distinction between “collecting” information and “receiving” information on U.S. citizens, the memo argued that “MI [military intelligence] may receive information from anyone, anytime.” [See CQ.com, Jan. 31, 2005]
This receipt of information presumably would include data from the National Security Agency, which has been engaging in surveillance of U.S. citizens without court-approved warrants in apparent violation of the Foreign Intelligence Security Act. Bush approved the program of warrantless wiretaps shortly after 9/11.

There also may be an even more extensive surveillance program. Former NSA employee Russell D. Tice told a congressional committee on Feb. 14 that such a top-secret surveillance program existed, but he said he couldn’t discuss the details without breaking classification laws.
Tice added that the “special access” surveillance program may be violating the constitutional rights of millions of Americans. [UPI, Feb. 14, 2006]
With this expanded surveillance, the government’s list of terrorist suspects is rapidly swelling.

The Washington Post reported on Feb. 15 that the National Counterterrorism Center’s central repository now holds the names of 325,000 terrorist suspects, a four-fold increase since the fall of 2003.
Asked whether the names in the repository were collected through the NSA’s domestic surveillance program, an NCTC official told the Post, “Our database includes names of known and suspected international terrorists provided by all intelligence community organizations, including NSA.”

As the administration scoops up more and more names, members of Congress also have questioned the elasticity of Bush’s definitions for words like terrorist “affiliates,” used to justify wiretapping Americans allegedly in contact with such people or entities.
During the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on the wiretap program, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California, complained that the House and Senate Intelligence Committees “have not been briefed on the scope and nature of the program.”
Feinstein added that, therefore, the committees “have not been able to explore what is a link or an affiliate to al-Qaeda or what minimization procedures (for purging the names of innocent people) are in place.”
The combination of the Bush administration’s expansive reading of its own power and its insistence on extraordinary secrecy has raised the alarm of civil libertarians when contemplating how far the Pentagon might go in involving itself in domestic matters.
A Defense Department document, entitled the “Strategy for Homeland Defense and Civil Support,” has set out a military strategy against terrorism that envisions an “active, layered defense” both inside and outside U.S. territory. In the document, the Pentagon pledges to “transform U.S. military forces to execute homeland defense missions in the … U.S. homeland.”
The Pentagon strategy paper calls for increased military reconnaissance and surveillance to “defeat potential challengers before they threaten the United States.” The plan “maximizes threat awareness and seizes the initiative from those who would harm us.”
But there are concerns over how the Pentagon judges “threats” and who falls under the category “those who would harm us.” A Pentagon official said the Counterintelligence Field Activity’s TALON program has amassed files on antiwar protesters.
In December 2005, NBC News revealed the existence of a secret 400-page Pentagon document listing 1,500 “suspicious incidents” over a 10-month period, including dozens of small antiwar demonstrations that were classified as a “threat.”
The Defense Department also might be moving toward legitimizing the use of propaganda domestically, as part of its overall war strategy.

A secret Pentagon “Information Operations Roadmap,” approved by Rumsfeld in October 2003, calls for “full spectrum” information operations and notes that “information intended for foreign audiences, including public diplomacy and PSYOP, increasingly is consumed by our domestic audience and vice-versa.”

“PSYOPS messages will often be replayed by the news media for much larger audiences, including the American public,” the document states. The Pentagon argues, however, that “the distinction between foreign and domestic audiences becomes more a question of USG [U.S. government] intent rather than information dissemination practices.”
It calls for “boundaries” between information operations abroad and the news media at home, but does not outline any corresponding limits on PSYOP campaigns.
Similar to the distinction the Pentagon draws between “collecting” and “receiving” intelligence on U.S. citizens, the Information Operations Roadmap argues that as long as the American public is not intentionally “targeted,” any PSYOP propaganda consumed by the American public is acceptable.

The Pentagon plan also includes a strategy for taking over the Internet and controlling the flow of information, viewing the Web as a potential military adversary. The “roadmap” speaks of “fighting the net,” and implies that the Internet is the equivalent of “an enemy weapons system.”
In a speech on Feb. 17 to the Council on Foreign Relations, Rumsfeld elaborated on the administration’s perception that the battle over information would be a crucial front in the War on Terror, or as Rumsfeld calls it, the Long War.

Rather than bring criminal charges, Bush designated Padilla an “enemy combatant” and had him imprisoned indefinitely without benefit of due process. Powerful Quake Sends Thousands
Fleeing
MAPUTO, Mozambique
A powerful earthquake sent thousands of panicking people
fleeing from swaying buildings in Mozambique and Zimbabwe soon after midnight
Thursday, and killed at least two people.
Thousands of residents slept in the open, fearful of returning to their beds
as aftershocks rocked the region.
"It felt like the building was going to fall down and it went on for a
long time, the trembling," Johana Neves, manager of the Tivoli Hotel in
Mozambique's main port city of Beira, said by telephone. "It felt like you
were in a boat, it was shaking everything yet, it's strange, nothing is broken,
even the windows."
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 12:19 a.m. with a
magnitude of 7.5 _ one capable of widespread and heavy damage _ and was centered
140 miles southwest of Beira. It shook buildings in Beira and Maputo,
Mozambique's capital, and the Zimbabwean cities of Masvingo and Mutare. The
temblor awoke people hundreds of miles away in Harare, Zimbabwe's capital, and
as far away as Durban on South Africa's Indian Ocean coast.
Mozambican and Zimbabwe authorities reported surprisingly little damage,
apparently because the epicenter was in remote and sparsely populated farmlands
near the border with Zimbabwe.
"That same size earthquake in a populated area would probably cause
quite considerable damage," said William Leith of the U.S. Geographic
Survey's Earthquake Hazards Program.
Esperanca Dias, Mozambique's minister of mineral resources, told state
television some buildings were damaged in Beira and the walls of some buildings
collapsed in Chimoyo, north of the quake's center.
Two people were killed in farm towns near the epicenter, she said.
A little girl tripped and fell as she rushed downstairs from a seventh floor
apartment in Espungabera, and died of injuries on the spot, Dias said. And a man
was buried in rubble when a wall of his home collapsed in Machaze.
She said at least 11 people were injured, one seriously when he panicked and
jumped from the third floor window of a Beira hotel.
Beira was without electricity earlier Thursday and so were some suburbs of
Maputo, the seaside capital, where the quake uprooted several power pylons.
It shook every corner of Mozambique and was felt strongly in Maputo, in the
far south, where tall office and apartment buildings swayed and hundreds of
panicked residents fled into the streets.
During the night, national energy director Elias Daudi went on state radio to
urge people not to return to buildings because of possible aftershocks.
In Beira, people were so frightened they refused to go back into buildings
Thursday morning even as a light rain was falling.
Rosa Silva, governor of Maputo province, said the government was concerned
there might be serious aftershocks and had asked South Africa for help
monitoring seismic activity.
At least five aftershocks were recorded immediately and more were expected in
coming days because of the quake's size, said Rafael Abreu of the Geographic
Survey.
President Armando Guebuza broadcast a message to the nation Thursday
afternoon saying the government still was taking stock.
The quake was felt in oil fields some 120 miles from the epicenter, but there
was no damage, said Johann van Rheede, spokesman for South African company SASOL,
which produces natural gas there.
In Tete province, J.J. Constantino of the World Food Program said many people
had slept in the fields.
Tete also is home to one of the world's largest hydroelectric dams, the
Cabora Bassa which covers 1,095 square miles. A reporter at the dam said the
earthquake was felt and people also abandoned their homes to sleep outside, but
that there were no immediate reports of damage.
The quake was unusual for Mozambique, one of the world's poorest countries
where natural disaster usually takes the form of flooding. Floods killed at
least 13 people this month and more than 800 in 2000 and 2001.
The temblor struck near the southern end of the East Africa rift system, a
seismically active zone which has produced quakes measuring magnitude 7.6.
Thursday's was shallow, which increases the potential for damage, said Dale
Grant, a geophysicist with the Geographic Survey.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad blamed the United
States and Israel on Thursday for the destruction of a Shiite shrine's golden
dome in Iraq, saying it was the work of "defeated Zionists and
(Talmudic) occupiers."
Speaking to a crowd of thousands on a tour of southwestern Iran, the
president referred to the destruction of the Askariya mosque dome in Samarra on
Wednesday, which the Iraqi government has blamed on insurgents.
"They invade the shrine and bomb there because they oppose God and
justice," Ahmadinejad said, referring to the U.S.-led multinational forces
in Iraq.
"These passive activities are the acts of a group of defeated Zionists
and occupiers who intended to hit our emotions," he said in a speech that
was broadcast on state television. Addressing the United States, he added:
"You have to know that such an act will not save you from the anger of
Muslim nations."
The bombing set off a string of sectarian attacks in Iraq. Angry crowds
thronged the streets, militiamen attacked Sunni mosques and at least 19 people
were killed.

Bodies burned in open after Nigeria riots kill 146
ONITSHA, Nigeria (Reuters) - Christian youths burned the corpses of Muslims on Thursday on the streets of Onitsha in southeastern Nigeria, the city worst hit by religious riots that have killed at least 146 people across the country in five days.
Christian mobs, seeking revenge for the killings of Christians in the north, attacked Muslims with machetes, set fire to them, destroyed their houses and torched mosques in two days of violence in Onitsha, where 93 people died.
"We are very happy that this thing is happening so that the north will learn their lesson," said Anthony Umai, a motorcycle taxi rider, standing close to where Christian youths had piled up the corpses of 10 Muslims and were burning them.
Dozens more corpses had been thrown into the back of pick-up trucks by security services overnight, residents said.
Uncertainty over Nigeria's political future is aggravating regional, ethnic and religious rivalries in Africa's most populous nation and top oil exporter.
Elections are due next year and many Nigerians believe President Olusegun Obasanjo and some state governors will try to stay on after eight years in power. The prospect angers those who want their own ethnic or regional blocs to have their turn.
Militants in the oil-producing Niger Delta have waged a three-month campaign of attacks and kidnappings, which has cut exports and driven up world oil prices. One of their demands is greater control over their region and its resources.

There was no fighting in Onitsha on Thursday but Emeka Umeh, of human rights group the Civil Liberties Organization, called it "the peace of the graveyard".

Umeh said most of the bodies his group counted were Hausa, but some Ibo were killed too. The Hausa are the main ethnic group in northern Nigeria and most are Muslim, while the Ibo are dominant in the southeast and almost all are Christian.

In Bauchi, an alleged blasphemy started the trouble, while in Katsina it was a constitutional review that many see as an attempt to keep Obasanjo in power.
The constitution bars Obasanjo, a Christian from the southwest, from seeking a third term in 2007 and he says he will uphold the charter. But he has declined to comment on a powerful movement to amend the constitution to allow him to stay.

IDF forces killed six terrorists in Shechem (Nablus)
this afternoon. Two soldiers were wounded in the battle. |
The battle began around noon when a paratroopers' unit entered the city,
making its way towards a building in which wanted terrorists were suspected of
hiding out. The Israelis were attacked with gunfire and grenades, and two
soldiers were hurt. Storming the building, the forces returned fire and killed
six terrorists.
One of the wounded soldiers was originally in light-to-moderate condition, but
his condition was later reported as moderate-to-serious. He was flown by
helicopter to Tel HaShomer Hospital in Tel Aviv.
At least three of the killed were of Fatah's Al-Aksa Brigades. Fatah is often
considered "moderate" in comparison with Hamas, but an Al-Aksa
spokesman in Shechem responded to today's battle as follows: "Israel has
opened up on itself the gates of Hell. Our response will be painful and quick,
and there is no longer any point in talking about a period of calm. We are not
obligated by the statements of others."

IDF kills three militants
IDF soldiers shot dead five Palestinians in several incidents that occurred
during the ongoing arrest operation in Nablus.
Three Palestinian gunmen belonging to the Fatah-linked Al Aqsa Martyrs'
Brigades militant group were killed in exchange of gunfire with IDF soldiers
at the municipal cemetery Thursday afternoon. The Palestinians fired
rocket-propelled grenades during the gun battle.
Two soldiers were wounded in the battle, one moderately and the other lightly.
One Palestinian was critically wounded in the incident.
The IDF identified the three dead militants as Muhammed Hamdan Abed El Hadi
Shatiwi, Mahmad Hamis Hassin Amar and Fatah Hasan Hajaj.
Shatiwi, 33, was responsible for the deaths of three Israelis, the IDF said.
In another incident, a clash broke out in the Dahia neighborhood when a
military jeep got stuck and Palestinians threw firebombs and rocks at troops.
One of the soldiers opened fire at the group of Palestinians, killing Ibrahim
Said, 19. Said's relatives said that he was shot three times, despite being
unarmed.
According to the IDF, Said had hurled firebombs at the troops.

Five Qassam rockets land in Israel
On Thursday morning, five Qassam rockets were launched into Israel from the

the vicinity of Karmiya and Yad Mordechai. No casualties or damages were
