Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri, known as the "Senior Kabbalist Elder," passed away last night in Jerusalem. Over 300,000 people participated in his funeral. |
Rabbi Kaduri, who commemorated his 105th birthday several months ago, had
been in serious condition for the last two weeks in Bikur Cholim Hospital,
where he was cared for by his personal physician.
Police closed off Jerusalem streets for the Sunday afternoon funeral, which
became one of the largest ever in a city known for large funerals. The funeral
began at noon at Yeshivat Nachalat Yitzchak, in the Bucharim neighborhood,
between Geulah and Shmuel HaNavi. Rabbis Ovadiah Yosef
and Mordechai Eliyahu eulogized him, as did President Moshe Katzav.
Rabbi Kaduri was buried in the Mt. Menuchot cemetery.
Students of the righteous rabbi say that the blessing of the Ben Ish Chai
(considered the leading rabbi of Sephardic Jewry, d. 1904) and that
of the Lubavitcher Rebbe - both of whom blessed him that he might live to see
the Final Redeemer - came true.

Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef, spiritual leader of much of Sephardic Jewry in Israel
today, announced, "We are in mourning over the Elder of the Kabbalists, a
remnant of the Great Assembly, Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri."
Chief Rabbi Yona Metzger expressed his great sorrow "over the taking
of the great righteous Rabbi Yitzchak Kaduri, of blessed memory. He was a great
and humble tzaddik [righteous person]. In his greatness, he dedicated his days
and nights to blessing Jews, to pray for Israel, and he felt the pain of those
who turned to him for all their troubles. Rabbis from around the country and
the world admired him and asked for his blessing."
A statement released by President Moshe Katzav's office said the president
"is pained by the death of the important and accomplished rabbi whose
reputation is world-renowned. Rabbi Kaduri, one of the great rabbis of the
Jewish People, was noted for his love of Israel and in his second-to-none expertise
in Kabbalah, (The dragon's head sorcerer)
contributed to Jewish unity, and was a source of inspiration for the Jewish
People in Israel and around the world."
Rabbi Kaduri came to the Holy Land in 1923, where he learned in Yeshivat Porat
Yosef in Jerusalem. He studied Kabbalah under the tutelage of Rabbi Ephraim
Cohen and Rabbi Salman Eliyahu (father of former Sephardic Chief Rabbi
Mordechai Eliyahu).
Rabbi Kaduri's son said there were only 60 Kabbalists in the Holy Land at the
time, and that only one who prayed for 15 years with "Rashash
intentions" was accorded that status.
When the Old City of Jerusalem was captured by the Jordanians in 1948, the
Yeshiva was evacuated to the Bucharim Quarter. Rabbi Kaduri studied Kabbalah
there until 1970, when such study was stopped in Yeshivat Porat Yosef. He also
studied for many years in Yeshivat Beit El on Rashi St. in Jerusalem, and then
moved with his students to found a new institution called Yeshivat Nachalat
Yitzchak.
Rabbi Kaduri engaged in bookbinding. He perused all the books he bound,
including many old manuscripts which he "photographed" in his memory.
Graced with a phenomenal memory, he
was said to have known the entire Babylonian Talmud by heart.
"In one instance," a source close to him relates, "in
disagreement with a leading Halakhic authority of today, Rabbi Kaduri smiled in
his inimitable manner, lifted his hand to the bookshelf and immediately opened
to the right page, proving his point. The [other] rabbi was astonished at his
familiarity with the [non-Kabbalistic] sources."

He passed away at a Jerusalem hospital where he had been hospitalized after contracting pneumonia. Magen David Adom paramedics treated several people who fainted during the funeral, which drew many Gaza Strip evacuees.
President Moshe Katsav eulogized Kaduri saying Israel lost “one of its biggest figures ever.”
“Rabbi Kaduri was distinguished for his Zionism, his modesty, his way of life, and he gave an example to all of us to denounce materiality. He was an example of Jewish spirituality and morality that accompanied the Jewish people for generations,” said Katsav.
The funeral procession left the rabbi’s yeshiva on David Street. Police blocked some Jerusalem roads to allow a smooth march to the cemetery.
Shas leader Eli Yishai ordered party activists to observe a moratorium on political activity for seven days, an initial period of mourning according to Jewish custom.
"I call on the whole of the house of Israel, as I've called on all Shas activists, to prepare and arrive at the funeral of Rabbi Kaduri," said Yishai.

“He smoked throughout his life and he was healthy. When I asked him why he smokes he replied, ‘smoke is good for angels’.”
Chief Ashkenaz Rabbi Yona Metzger said Kaduri sacrificed his life to pray for the Jewish people, adding that he sends his condolences to the rabbi’s family.

Exxon profit tops $10 billion, capping record year
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Exxon Mobil Corp. , the world's largest publicly traded oil company, on Monday reported a quarterly profit of $10.7 billion, capping a year of record earnings dominated by surging oil and gas prices.
The results pushed up Exxon's profit for the year to a staggering $36.13 billion -- bigger than the economies of 125 of the 184 countries ranked by the World Bank. Profit rose 42 percent from 2004.
The company and its peers have come under fire for posting billions in profit while consumers struggle with high gasoline prices. Exxon was quick to emphasize that such results would help it make long-term investments to meet energy demand.

DAVOS, Switzerland (FORTUNE) - Be afraid. Be very afraid.
That's the message from two of the world's most successful investors on the topic of high oil prices. One of them, Hermitage Capital's Bill Browder, has outlined six scenarios that could take oil up to a downright terrifying $262 a barrel.
The other, billionaire investor George Soros, wouldn't make any specific predictions about prices. But as a legendary commodities player, it's worth paying heed to the words of the man who once took on the Bank of England -- and won. "I'm very worried about the supply-demand balance, which is very tight," Soros says.
"U.S. power and influence has declined precipitously because of Iraq and the war on terror and that creates an incentive for anyone who wants to make trouble to go ahead and make it." As an example, Soros pointed to the regime in Iran, which is heading towards a confrontation with the West over its nuclear power program and doesn't show any signs of compromising. "Iran is on a collision course and I have a difficulty seeing how such a collision can be avoided," he says.

Other outcomes include an embargo by Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez ($111 a barrel), civil war in Nigeria ($98 a barrel), unrest and violence in Algeria ($79 a barrel) and major attacks on infrastructure by the insurgency in Iraq ($88 a barrel).
Regressions analysis may be mathematical but it's an art, not a science. And some of these scenarios are quite dubious, like Venezuela shutting the spigot. (For more on Chavez and Venezuela, click here.)
Energy chiefs at the World Economic Forum in Davos downplayed the likelihood of a serious oil shortage. In a statement Friday, Shell's CEO Jeroen Van der Veer declared, "There is no reason for pessimism." OPEC Acting Secretary General Mohammed Barkindo said "OPEC will step in at any time there is a shortage in the market." But then no one in the industry, including Van der Veer, foresaw an extended run of $65 oil -- or even $55 oil -- like we've been having.
It's clear that there is very, very little wiggle room, and that most consumers, including those in the United States, have acceded so far to the new reality of $60 or even $70 oil. And as Soros points out, the White House has its hands full in Iraq and elsewhere.
Although there are long-term answers like ethanol, what's needed is a crash conservation effort in the United States.
Don't worry, the shems of shame will force it.
This doesn't have to be command-and-control style. Moral suasion counts for a lot, and if the president suggested staying home with family every other Sunday or otherwise cutting back on unnecessary drives, he could please the family values crowd while also changing the psychology of the oil market by showing that the U.S. government is serious about easing any potential bottlenecks.
Similarly, he could finally get the government to tighten fuel-efficiency standards and encourage both Detroit and drivers to end decades of steadily increasing gas consumption. These kinds of steps would create a little headroom until new supplies do become available or threats like Iran's current leadership or the Iraqi insurgency fade.
It's been done it before. For all the cracks about Jimmy Carter in a cardigan and his malaise speech, America did reduce its use of oil following the price shocks of the 1970s, and laid the groundwork for low energy prices in the 1980s and 1990s. But it would require spending political capital, and offending traditional White House allies, and that's something this president doesn't seem to want to do

The meeting was initiated by the Yesha Council in a bid to resolve what settler leaders characterized as a legal issue, but Olmert told them he will be acting in accordance with a High Court of Justice ruling and will not postpone the demolitions.
However, the two sides agreed to continue their dialogue.
Settler leader Pinchas Wallerstein told Ynet Olmert rejected Yesha's request out of hand.
"Olmert told us 'forget about it, I have no intention to postpone the demolition. I intend to abide by the court ruling.'"
Meanwhile, IDF troops at a West Bank roadblock stopped two buses carrying youths heading to Amona.
Earlier, a military order was signed allowing troops at roadblocks to prevent settlers from passing through if they are suspected of planning to reach Amona and disrupt the evacuation.
Meanwhile, IDF Central Command Head Yair Naveh and Police Chief Moshe Karadi visited the base where troops train ahead of the evacuation of the illegal West Bank outpost of Amona.

"The evacuation of Amona will take place on Wednesday. If there's a need to go back and clear the Hebron marketplace, it will happen on Thursday or Friday," he said. "We're not dealing with disengagement. This is a law enforcement mission we've been tasked with."
Naveh also told security forces: "You'll be equipped with bats and helmets, and (tear) gas will be used with the approval of a brigade commander or a higher ranking officer."
"We must make plenty of arrests and be determined," he said. "A masked person should be detained at once. If we face even the smallest problem in evacuating women – male troops will also take part."
Police Chief Karadi said: "Our mission is to finish the evacuation successfully and without casualties, and to that end we have 1,600 police officers from the best units in the Israel Police."

) German Chancellor Angela Merkel concluded her visit to Israel with a visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum on Monday.
“We are full of shame for what happened. I am sorry that only few righteous people were in Germany at that time," she said.
Forty years of diplomatic relations are very important for the German government and people,” Merkel said.
A congregation of Holocaust survivors and their families welcomed Merkel and senior German officials who were accompanied by Avner Shalev, Yad Vashem’s director and Israel Singer, the chairman of the World Jewish Congress.
Dozens of photographers and camera crews were blocked from entering the Museum to cover the visit.
Merkel said she did not want the media presence to distract her during the visit.
Yad Vashem officials were sufficiently appreciative of the visit to describe it as “exceptional” and incomparable to any other visit by a head of state.
Merkel, who landed in Ben Gurion-Airport at around 6 p.m. on Sunday, said she's excited to be visiting Israel.
"This visit is very important for me," she said upon her arrival.
“Relations with Israel will always be special because of the Holocaust,” Merkel said in joint press conference with Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.The acting PM welcomed Merkel to Israel and said he was particularly pleased she chose to visit Israel before other countries. He noted the two countries are marking 40 years for the establishment of diplomatic ties and stressed the deep commitment to continue nurturing the relationship.

Hadassah calls in U.S. expert to consult on PM Sharon's case
Hadassah University Hospital announced Sunday
that as part of its routine care, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon underwent an MRI
scan Saturday evening.
Hospital spokeswoman Yael Bossem-Levy explained that the scan indicated
"the continued reabsorption of the bleeding in Sharon's brain and a
reduction in the swelling. There is no sign of intercranial pressure and the
size of the cerebral lobes is unchanged."
A Friday EEG indicated that "both sides of the brain
were functioning."
Sharon had been evaluated by
world-renowned coma expert Dr. Jerome Posner, Bossem-Levy said.
Posner, who wrote the definitive book on treatment of coma patients, was invited
to Israel by Hadassah to give his expert opinion on Sharon's treatment.
Hadassah, located in Ein Karem in Jerusalem, said Sunday that the prime
minister's condition remains unchanged. He is in critical but stable condition,
on a respirator, has not regained consciousness and is still in the intensive
care unit.
Sharon has been in this condition for three weeks.
Massive bleeding
The massive cerebral bleeding he suffered on January 4 caused severe brain
damage. Senior doctors not involved with his treatment have said that few
patients of Sharon's age and medical condition regain consciousness in such a
situation.
Posner examined Sharon and spoke to the prime minister's family, Bossem-Levy
said in a statement. No details of the results of the examination were given.
Dr. Avraham Lazary, the director of the head injury wing at Reuth Medical Center
in Tel Aviv, told Haaretz the reports from the hospital indicate that Sharon is
in a vegetative state.
However, Lazary and other experts in rehabilitation do not reject the
possibility that he could regain consciousness. Some even
say it is possible he could regain some physical and cognitive function.
Patients in vegetative state often retain brain stem activity, which supports
independent breathing, display spontaneous movements that do not indicate actual
functioning, and have a regular sleep-wake cycle. They do not speak or follow
instructions, however, and may show response to pain stimuli.
