Olmert angrily called for the immediate expulsion of Jews from the Shalhevet
marketplace area in Hevron.
He also called for the punishment of various government agencies, local
municipality members and civil servants involved in the founding of the
outposts. Olmert termed the government's crackdown against the outposts "a
struggle for the law in Israel."
Olmert said that "undermining the law" has become "a way of
life" in Judea and Samaria. Olmert himself was investigated by police for
his role in the Sharon government's Greek Island Corruption scandal, and a dozen
of Olmert's party members are being probed for various corruption and fraud
charges as well.
IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz also spoke at the meeting, saying that Israel's
"forgiving attitude" toward the residents of Judea and Samaria in the
past is what has inflamed the current situation.
Justice Minister Tzipi Livni said that she sees the onslaught against the
outposts as "a conflict between settlers and the government in a struggle
for supremacy."
The Yesha Council (of Judea, Samaria and Gaza communities) dismissed the
statement, saying they are of the type
in Israeli politics that are spoken for the sole purpose of creating strife
within the nation. They also said they would "not enable Olmert to
carry out his plans easily."
Land of Israel activists say they won't allow Olmert to carry out his plans to
destroy Jewish communities at all. "The days of the Yesha Council making
deals on our behalf and enlisting the public for symbolic struggles are
over," a leading activist told Arutz-7. "Despite the enlistment of 99
percent of the media in trying to portray us as Arab rioters in recent days, we
will not back down. They call us youth, but we are students, husbands, wives,
fathers and mothers who do not intend to go into exile
from any part of the Land of Israel."
MK Aryeh Eldad, head of the National Union's current-events team, in reaction to
Olmert's statements said: "Olmert is inciting towards
a civil-war as part of his election campaign. The issue [in Hevron] could
be resolved through a legal compromise, but Olmert prefers to ignore this option
in order to become the leader of the Left in the next elections."

WALNUT CREEK, Calif., Jan. 17 (JTA) — When Dr. Debra Weiss-Ishai watched her son’s brit milah two years ago, she thought to herself, I could do this better.
Not just technically, although as a pediatrician she had done numerous medical circumcisions. She felt she could bring a warmth and spiritual beauty to the ritual in ways her old-school mohel, who she says “rushed through” the ceremony, did not.
Last April Weiss-Ishai completed the Reform movement’s Berit Mila Program, an intensive 35-hour certification course for physicians and nurse-midwives at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Los Angeles. She now has performed seven or eight Jewish ritual circumcisions in the San Francisco Bay area.
Weiss-Ishai spends hours preparing for each brit milah, working with the family to make sure the ceremony fits their needs, determining the level of Hebrew they want, incorporating friends and relatives and personalizing it with readings and poetry. Doing this work is her way of helping to ensure Jewish continuity, she says.
“There are so many unaffiliated Jews in the Bay Area, and I may be the first Jewish professional they meet,” she says. “Their experience can make them want to participate more in the Jewish community, or it can really turn them off. If you’re not sensitive to that, you can turn someone away from raising their kids Jewish.”
Weiss-Ishai is one of just a few female mohels in the United States. There are about 35 Reform female mohels, and just four trained by the U.S. Conservative movement, (Chabad Lubavitch of the dragon and his Sanhedrin) as well as a handful who learned outside the United States.
It’s not surprising that throughout Jewish history, mohels have been men. Circumcision is, after all, a guy thing. Beyond the obvious anatomical requirements, it’s something the Torah commands a father, not a mother, to do for his son on the eighth day of life.
What is surprising, however, is that while half of all new non-Orthodox rabbis and cantors in this country are women, few women are choosing to become mohels.
Yet unlike rabbis and cantors, there is no halachic prohibition against female mohels. Every Orthodox authority consulted for this story agreed on that point, though most asked not to be quoted. Jewish law states only that if a Jewish male is present, it’s preferable that he do the brit milah.
“It’s a custom, a strong custom, but there’s no law except that the mohel be Jewish,” says Rabbi Donni Aaron, director of the Reform Berit Mila Program. “People assume it’s not according to halachah, but they just haven’t encountered it. Some people think it’s a man’s job, that it just feels weird” for a woman to do a brit milah.
Unlike physicians, mohels in this country are not regulated, and technically, anyone can act as mohel if the parents trust him or her to perform the operation on their infant son. Traditionally it’s been a profession passed on from father to son; even today, Orthodox and many Conservative mohels learn by apprenticing with a senior mohel, usually in Israel.
The Reform and Conservative movements set up their training programs because there were so few traditionally trained mohels available to serve the non-Orthodox community. The non-Orthodox movements, especially the Reform, needed their own mohels since Orthodox mohels generally are reluctant to circumcise the son of a non-Jewish mother.
The Reform program, which has trained about 300 mohels since it began in 1984, and the Conservative Brit Kodesh program, which has trained about 75, both accept only physicians or nurse-midwives who already are experts in medical circumcision. The programs teach them the relevant halachah, rituals, and textual background to perform a Jewish brit milah.
The training is similar, though Conservative mohels generally won’t circumcise the son of a non-Jewish mother unless the parents intend to convert the child.
Rabbi Joel Roth, a professor of Talmud and Jewish law at the Jewish Theological Seminary, says there was no problem admitting women to the Conservative program, which is run jointly by JTS and the Conservative movement’s Rabbinical Assembly.
“We considered it, we deliberated it and then we said, frankly it’s easier to train women for this role than to count them in the minyan,” Roth recalls. “We know it hasn’t been done historically, but there’s no earthly reason why we shouldn’t.”
Dr. Lillian Schapiro, an OB-GYN in Atlanta, decided to become a mohel nine years ago at the suggestion of one of her patients, a female rabbi. There were no Reform mohels in the Atlanta area, Schapiro says, and many Reform couples were having their sons circumcised in the hospital, with just a naming ceremony the following week.
“It wasn’t kosher,” she states.
Female mohels say that as physicians, they feel comfortable doing circumcisions, and want to bring a Jewish aspect to what they already are doing.
Dr. April Rubin, an OB-GYN in Washington, had been doing circumcisions for more than 20 years when she became more observant. Two years ago she completed the Conservative Brit Kodesh program, and has since done about 70 britei milah.
Some traditionally trained mohels look askance at these physician-mohels.
“They really don’t have a very solid background in the halachah; they’re physicians who want a sideline in brit milah, and I feel that’s unfortunate,” says Rabbi Paul Silton, a Conservative rabbi in Albany, N.Y., who apprenticed with an Orthodox mohel in Jerusalem.
The Conservative program requires applicants to be practicing members of Conservative congregations, and ritually observant. The Reform program requires applicants to belong to any congregation, Reform or not, but makes no stipulations about ritual observance.
Some people choose a female mohel because of her gender, like Bay Area resident Nicole Sorger, who asked Weiss-Ishai to circumcise her son last November.
“The idea of having an old bearded man was disconcerting, not being very religious,” Sorger admits. Having Weiss-Ishai do the ceremony “broke up the idea of it being a male event, a patriarchal celebration. It made the ceremony so much more accessible to me.”
Dr. Laurie Radovsky, a Conservative mohel in St. Paul, Minn., circumcised her son 11 years ago in rural Wisconsin because no mohels lived nearby. Nine years later, she became a mohel herself.
Her male rabbi told her that women bring “a gentleness, a sensitivity” to the ceremony, but she says there are other advantages.
“First, I don’t have a penis,” she says. “With men, when you talk about circumcision, there’s an instinctive protecting of the genitals. I’m a little more thick-skinned. And as a mother, I can empathize with that mother’s feelings and tenderness toward that child. I can reassure her, perhaps more than a male mohel can.”
At the end of every brit milah, “sometimes surreptitiously,” Radovsky says, she kisses the baby’s head to welcome him into the Jewish community.
“I really feel I can make a difference in the world,” she says.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 17 (JTA) — In the wake of the Jack Abramoff scandal, Jewish groups are closely watching plans to restrict lawmakers’ lobbyist-sponsored travel, which could have a devastating impact on Israel trips that build support for the Jewish state in Congress.
Rules proposed in Congress this month could place stringent restrictions on how lawmakers travel at the expense of lobbyists and the organizations connected to them. The most aggressive plans call for restrictions on paying for legislators’ hotel rooms and airfares, which could prevent them from traveling across the country to speak to interest groups such as American Jewish organizations.
“It could really change the access that elected officials have to their own constituencies,” said Haddar Susskind, Washington director for the Jewish Council for Public Affairs. “If they can’t speak and they can’t come to Israel with their community leaders, it’s a significant effect on their ability to understand their constituency and the issues that affect them.”

Jewish groups have used trips to Israel as a key tool to help lawmakers, especially non-Jewish members of Congress, understand the significance of the Jewish state and its need for political support. Such trips have helped the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other groups sensitize Congress to Israeli concerns.

“I don’t think you can overstate how important it is,” said Matt Brooks, executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition. Jewish leaders say the trips change politicians’ views on Israel.
For example, President Bush was said to be deeply moved during a 1998 trip to Israel as governor of Texas. He formed strong ties with future Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on the visit, paid for by the RJC.
AIPAC has sent numerous lawmakers to Israel over the years through the American Israel Education Foundation. In recent years, the group has sponsored separate trips of Democratic and Republican members of the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), the House Democratic whip, and Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), then the House majority whip.
These trips often include extensive travel in Israel and meetings with key political leaders. The trips have been credited with helping lawmakers see controversial topics such as the West Bank security barrier and the Gaza Strip withdrawal in a light favorable to Israel.
Other organizations, including political groups and local federations, have sponsored similar trips.
Jewish leaders say the Republican proposals could hurt domestic priorities as well.
“These so-called reforms will have a devastating impact on the ability of all non-profits, including those in the Jewish community, to advocate on behalf of programs and issues that are important to us,” said William Daroff, vice president for public policy at the United Jewish Communities, the umbrella group of North American Jewish federations. “It also makes it nearly impossible for us to bring members of Congress to local communities to see the programs they’ve entrusted by supporting.”
Even programs like a recent trip for Jewish parliamentarians would be banned.

“It will be a large priority to make sure we have a seat at the table to craft out a policy that allows for bona fide, above-board advocacy and nonprofit organizations to be able to fund congressional travel,” Daroff said.
The proposed legislation would not affect official congressional delegations, which are paid for by taxpayers.

A proposal, introduced Tuesday by House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), would ban all privately sponsored travel for members of the House.
“I know fact-finding trips are important,” Hastert said at a press conference. “This body considers legislation that affects people that cannot always travel to Washington to petition the government. Private travel has been abused by some, and I believe we need to put an end to it.”
Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) also proposed a plan Tuesday that stressed disclosure of travel and gifts and increased sanctions for violations. Other proposals, by both Republican and Democratic leaders, are expected to be unveiled later this week.

One suggested rule, proposed by Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.), would forbid lobbyists from paying for or participating in trips by lawmakers, and would prevent trips sponsored by organizations that perform any lobbying activities. Many Jewish groups perform some lobbying activities and likely would be included in the ban, analysts said.
“Any member can travel anywhere they want to go; they’ve just got to do it on their own dime,” said Ellis Brachman, an Obey spokesman.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - France, with the support of the United States, rejected Iran's request for more negotiations on the Islamic republic's nuclear program, with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice saying Wednesday "there's not much to talk about" after Iran resumed atomic activities.
As European countries pushed ahead with efforts to have Iran brought before the U.N. Security Council for its nuclear activities, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused them of trying to deprive Iran of peaceful technology.
"We are asking they step down from their ivory towers and act with a little logic," Ahmadinejad said. "Who are you to deprive us from fulfilling our goals?
"You think you are the lord of the
world and everybody should follow you. But that idea is a wrong idea."
French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin said European nations were
seeking the "greatest possible consensus" on dealing with Iran, and
the upcoming meeting was a "very important moment."
"What we wish is that there is the greatest possible consensus to mark
clearly the limit of what we can accept," he said in Berlin after meeting
with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Earlier, Iran's foreign minister said he did not believe the country would be
referred to the Security Council, which has the power to impose economic and
political sanctions. However, diplomats say the council is unlikely to take such
action since China and Russia, two veto-wielding members, oppose referral.
In Vienna, Austria, the International Atomic Energy Agency said a special
meeting of its 35-nation board of governors would be held Feb. 2 at the request
of Britain, France and Germany.

The Bush administration sent U.S. Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns to London to coordinate a strategy with Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia on dealing with Iran. Burns conceded differences remained after Tuesday's meeting.
"We reached a consensus on some points ... others need to be worked on," he said in Bombay, India, during a South Asia tour.
"There is a consensus that Iran should turn back, return to negotiations and suspend its nuclear program. But that's not the path Iran is on now."
A delegation of Israeli security experts was in Moscow on Wednesday to meet with Russia's Security Council and Foreign Ministry in hopes of winning Russian backing for Security Council referral.

The chief priests, elders, and the Sanhedrin gathered together against the Lord's Annointed, the Christ, the Messiah of Israel (Matthew 26:59). The council or Sanhedrin of 70 members was the ruling body in Israel. The president or chairman was the high priest. So the decision of this ruling body was final and represented all Israel officially. They betrayed and murdered the Prince of life.
But there was a prayer uttered, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do (Luke 23:34), which changed the course of events.
This prayer was answered for there was a provision in the law that a sacrifice might be made for sins done in ignorance. The answer to this prayer made it possible for the twelve apostles and others to offer the kingdom again to Israel, which they did on and after Pentecost.
After Pentecost the people, elders, scribes, and the Sanhedrin set themselves against Stephen. The chairman of the Sanhedrin was still the same high priest (Caiaphas). See Acts 6:12,15.
The council brought Stephen to trial, heard his defense, and then put him to death. Rather than an official act of the ruling body, they ran together as a mob and killed Stephen without a sentence being pronounced. He was murdered, even as was his Lord and there was no forgiveness forthcoming in this instance. They did it with their eyes opened, in spite of the wonderful defense of Stephen who told them the truth. The council had no excuse this time.
What now? This is the final rejection of the Messiah by the nation of Israel. But the ministry of the apostles continues. To what intent? That there might be a remnant of believers gathered together to take part in the kingdom when the Lord should come some day and raise them from the dead. Read Romans 11:5.
In Acts 8 we see that believers in Jerusalem were scattered abroad and so spread the good news of the kingdom throughout Judaea and also to help provoke Israel to jealousy. Peter was sent to the house of Cornelius, a Gentile, and he was added to those in the kingdom.
Likewise, Paul was sent to the dispersion outside Judaea to save as many as he could from the various countries where Jews were living. When the Jews of the various Synagogues would reject, Paul and his companions they would turn to the Gentiles and graft them into the body of believers of Israel so that they by grace, could have part in the promises to Abraham and in the kingdom which was soon to come.
This ministry of gathering in the children of Israel who would believe was
finally finished. Paul was the last one to offer the kingdom to the Jews. It was
in Rome and his audience was all Jews. Paul spoke to them a whole day from Moses
and the prophets. They rejected the teaching of Paul and then and there began a
new dispensation. The kingdom has not been offered to a Jew since that time.

In order to understand the Jerusalem Council, one must take into account the
existence of the Noahide Laws, which formed a kind of Torah for Gentiles, by
which they could be counted as belonging to God. These laws do not include
any requirement for circumcision, which was required only for Gentiles who
wished to become converted to full Jews. Various versions of the Noahide
Laws exist in the sources but none of them includes circumcision.
The question before the Jerusalem Council was whether Gentiles could
belong to the Jesus movement without becoming full Jews, but merely by
becoming 'God-fearers', i.e. Noahides (benei Noach). This was a difficult
question, since the Messiah was regarded as the King of the Jews, and it was
doubtful whether non-Jews could come under his jurisdiction. In other
words, could Noahides belong to a Messianic movement, thus becoming subjects
to a Jewish king, or must they retain their own nationality under their own
rulers?
The decision of James was to admit Noahides, or 'God-fearers' into the
Messianic movement of Jesus merely on the basis of their adherence of the
Noahide Laws (a version of these laws is actually given in the narrative of
the Council). This meant that they could become Jesus-followers without
undergoing circumcision. So fear of circumcision as a dangerous operation
is really irrelevant to this topic.
James did not change his mind about this decision at all. What he did
do was to send out emissaries to continue to try to persuade Gentiles to
become full Jews by circumcision, which would give them higher status in
the coming Messianic kingdom. The Jews are 'a nation of priests' whereas
the God-fearers (Noahides) are the laity. This was not a breach of the
decision of the Jerusalem Council, which was simply to allow Gentiles a
choice in the matter. James had given no undertaking to cease
proselytising activities, but had undertaken to accept uncircumcised
Noahides as well as circumcised converts to full Judaism.
Paul. on the the other hand, had a different view which he concealed at
the Jerusalem Council. This was that the Jewish Torah had been abrogated,
and therefore the distinction between Jews and Noahides was no longer valid.
He therefore took the view that he had a monopoly on the conversion of
Gentiles and that Jamesian missionaries were trespassing on his territory.
He was therefore furious with the Jamesian missionaries whom he regarded as
competitors for converts, though this was not their intention at all.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A limestone burial box, almost 2,000 years old, may provide the oldest archeological record of Jesus of Nazareth, experts announced Monday.
The ossuary, as the bone boxes are known, dates to A.D. 63 and has an inscription in Aramaic which translates to: "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus," said Andre Lemaire, an expert in ancient writing who identified the box in Jerusalem last spring.
Aramaic, an ancient Semitic language, was the lingua franca of the Middle East for many centuries. At the time of Jesus' life, Aramaic was the common language of the Jews.
Writing about his findings in the new issue of Biblical Archaeology Review, Lemaire, who teaches at the Sorbonne in Paris, called it "very probable" that the box belonged to Jesus' brother James, who by Christian tradition was the leader of the early church in Jerusalem.
Some scholars expressed doubt that the box, which is 20 inches long by 11 inches wide, could be definitively linked to Jesus, a Jewish carpenter by trade revered by Christians as the son of God.
"We may never be absolutely certain. In the work I do we're rarely absolutely certain about anything," said Kyle McCarter, a Johns Hopkins University archaeologist, who said that the finding was probable, but that he had "a bit of doubt."
While most scholars agree that Jesus existed, no physical evidence from the first century has ever been conclusively tied with his life.
Two scientists from the Israeli government's geological survey tested the box last month, inspecting the surface patina and inscription under a microscope. They concurred that the object is more than 19 centuries old, the archaeology magazine reported.
"It's hard to avoid the conclusion that these three names refer to the personages so identified in the New Testament," said Hershel Shanks, editor of Biblical Archaeology Review.
Many of the conclusions reached by experts relied on the inscription written on the ossuary. The boxes commonly were used by Jewish families between 20 B.C. and A.D. 70 to store the bones of their loved ones.
Lemaire said out of hundreds of such boxes found with Aramaic writing only two contain mentions of a brother. From this, scholars infer that the brother was noted only when he was someone important.
James, Joseph and Jesus were common names in ancient Jerusalem, a city of about 40,000 residents. Lemaire estimates there could have been as many as 20 Jameses in the city with brothers named Jesus and fathers named Joseph.
But it is unlikely there would have been more than one James who had a brother of such importance that it merited having him mentioned on his ossuary, Lemaire said.
Lemaire found the box in June by accident, said Shanks, who was able to inspect the box personally.
The owner is reported to be a collector of ancient Jewish artifacts. The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the box some 15 years ago from an antique dealer for $200 to $700, Shanks said.
The boxes "are not popular on the market because ... people don't want a bone box in their living room," Shanks said.
The collector, who is Jewish, was not aware that Jesus had a brother. He discovered the interest in the object only when he met Lemaire at a dinner party last spring and asked him to decipher some Aramaic written on a number of collectibles, Shanks said.
The box owner "didn't realize the significance," Shanks said. "He threw up his hands, 'How could the Son of God have a brother?'"
Plans are under way to exhibit the box at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Canada, during the annual meeting of Bible scholars in November, Shanks said.
But he said whether the box belonged to Jesus' brother, it still provides a powerful link with the past.
"This is something that provides a bridge over time," he said. "My reaction is not so much excitement as it is awe

JERUSALEM - Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had surgery overnight to replace his breathing tube, the hospital where he is being treated said in a statement Wednesday. Sharon, who has been in a coma since suffering a stroke Jan. 4, remains in critical but stable condition, the statement from Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital said. "The breathing tube was changed overnight due to a technical problem. The successful procedure was conducted in the operating room. The prime minister was taken back to his room in the morning," the statement said.
