Nations to meet on Iran nukes
The major players in the effort to get Iran to limit its nuclear program plan to meet next week.
Britain, China, Russia, Germany and France will discuss the recent acceleration of Iran’s nuclear program in London on Monday, a spokesman for Britain’s Foreign Office said. Iran says the program is peaceful, but Britain, the European Union and Israel believe Iran is close to manufacturing a nuclear weapon.
Those parties want to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council for sanctions, but fear a veto from Russia or China. Russia may be more willing to act now that Iran has resisted Russia’s offer to enrich Iranian uranium, a measure intended to prevent Iran from making a weapon.
Ehud Olmert, Israel’s acting prime minister, has lobbied Russia in recent days not to use its veto if the matter comes to the Security Council.

“The problems facing the Jewish people today are more and more global,” said Brown, citing the Iranian nuclear threat as an example. “It’s time to act together.”
He compared the group to the Black or Hispanic caucuses in the U.S. Congress — bodies of individuals from similar backgrounds who work together for common causes.

“I will be particularly vigilant on all of these,” said Ellman, who is vice chairman of the British Parliament’s commission against anti-Semitism. Ellman, one of four British legislators attending the conference, said there were 20 Jewish members of Parliament in the United Kingdom with a range of attitudes toward Israel.
She said the conference also shed light on different ways anti-Semitism is manifesting itself around the world, including through the Internet and satellite television.
“I will go back with new information to do even more,” she said.
Canadian Senator Jerry Grafstein, who has played a leading role in pushing international resolutions against anti-Semitism, said the conference was a good place to trade information about “issues that effect all of us as Jews and parliamentarians.”
For Aida Fishman, a daughter of Holocaust survivors from Poland who became a member of Costa Rica’s Parliament, seeing Jewish lawmakers from around the globe was a revelation.
“One feels less alone,” she said. “There is a feeling of how close we are and how much we can do together.”

Tensions between Iran and Western powers over
the Muslim state's controversial nuclear program touched a new peak on Thursday
as the foreign ministers of Germany, Britain and France said that negotiations
with Iran had reached a "dead end" and that Tehran should be referred
to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice joined the European powers on Thursday
and said Iran must be referred to the UN Security Council. Rice also called for
an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Report: Iran long way away from nuclear production
Iran has finished removing all seals placed by the UN's International Atomic
Energy Agency (IAEA) on its nuclear fuel research sites but is a long way away
from being able to enrich uranium, a Western diplomat said on Thursday.
"They've finished removing the seals," said the diplomat, who is
close to the Vienna-based IAEA, on condition of anonymity.
Iran has installed some 164 centrifuges - machines that enrich uranium by
spinning at supersonic speeds - at Natanz but the diplomat said they were
mostly not functional.
"But [Tehran is] probably going to have to rebuild the entire [cascade of
enrichment centrifuges]. There's a lot of humidity, corrosion. It's going to
take a long time, "the diplomat said.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair told Parliament Wednesday that Iran's latest
move, coupled with a string of anti-Israel remarks by the country's new

MosNews Russia’s chief rabbi, Berl Lazar, told the Itar-Tass news agency that
the main conclusion to be drawn from the incident was that it’s too late to
talk about fascism. “It’s here. It is fascism”, Berl Lazar said in an
official statement. The head rabbi described Wednesday’s incident as a
consequence of militant and unpunished
anti-Semitism and open propaganda of extremism and fascism for which no
one has ever been brought to justice.
“The murderer has come to a synagogue —the House of God; if blood was
spilled at a place of worship, what else we can expect,” the rabbi went on to
say. He has called on law enforcers to use the power of the law to fight

Among the eight men wounded were an American (

man from the Central Asian nation of Tajikistan, chief Moscow prosecutor
Anatoly Zuyev told reporters outside the synagogue. He said the attacker
”shouted words that showed he was motivated by ethnic
and religious hatred.“
Zuyev said the suspect, a Muscovite identified as Alexander Koptsev, born in
1985, was in custody and faced charges including hate-based
attempted murder. It was not immediately clear whether he was a member of any
anti-Semitic or neo-Nazi groups, Zuyev said.
Gorin said the attacker had a shaved head and wore a leather jacket. Another
spokesman for the Jewish federation said the assailant shouted ”I
will kill people, I will kill Jews!“ after bursting into the synagogue
complex at about 5:30 p.m., when there were several dozen people in the
building.

crowded outside. He said several other people struggled to disarm the man as he
tried to stab them.
Russian news reports said the country’s top prosecutor, Vladimir Ustinov, was
taking control of the investigation.
The stabbing is the latest in a growing series of incidents apparently
involving skinheads or racist groups in Russia. Rights groups have warned that
hate groups have grown substantially in recent years, with their anger targeted
mainly at foreigners and dark-skinned immigrants from the poorer former Soviet
republics of the Caucasus and Central Asia.
Many rights groups also say prosecutors routinely downplay hate crimes,
choosing to bring less serious charges. The dominant
Russian Orthodox Church, which has made efforts to reach out to Jewish
officials in a country with a history of pogroms and anti-Semitism, condemned
the attack and called for action by the state and society to stem hate crimes.

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's brain scan
Thursday evening showed positive results, indicating that
the remnants of the blood in his brain from a massive stroke last week have
been absorbed, hospital officials said in a statement.
In response, doctors had removed a tube they had inserted into Sharon's skull
to relieve pressure on his brain, the statement from Hadassah Hospital said.
"The Prime Minister's heart rate is regular and body
temperature is normal," said a statement from Hadassah hospital,
where Sharon is in what doctors described as critical but stable condition
after suffering a massive stroke last week.
The hospital added that doctors placed
a permanent intravenous drip in his arm. It described the surgical procedure as
a success.
It said Sharon was being taken back to the neurological intensive care unit
after the completion of the procedure.
A member of Sharon's medical team said that the information about the brain
disease diagnosed after his first stroke on December 18 had been concealed out
of "political reasons," Channel 10 television reported Wednesday.
The controversy surrounding Sharon's medical treatment has continued unabated,
with his doctors coming under further criticism for concealing the diagnosis of
cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA).

Senior executives at Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem, where Sharon was
first treated in December and again since last Wednesday when he had the
second, far more severe stroke, admitted this week that the hospital's doctors had
decided to give the pime minister blood thinners despite the diagnosis of CAA.
The physicians had promised "full disclosure of [Sharon's] condition in
the wake of his hospitalization" in December.
The doctor said there was the fear that if made public, the information would
be used against Sharon and his Kadima party, particularly in light of the fact
that CAA has often been associated in medical literature with Alzheimer's
Disease.
Sharon was in critical but stable condition Thursday morning, a statement from
Hadassah said.
"The prime minister's condition remains critical but stable," said
the statement. "His heart rhythm is regular. In the evening he will
undergo a routine CT scan."
Surgeons tending to Sharon were expected to decide on when to stop the
intravenous drip completely at a daily consultation scheduled for 7 A.M.,
medical sources said Thursday.
"The prime minister's treatment is constantly being reviewed, but the
decision to end sedation outright requires a major deliberation," said a
source.
As published in Haaretz previously, senior physicians say anticoagulants such
as the Clexane given to Sharon significantly increase the risk of stroke in
people with CAA.
Sharon's physicians, Prof. Boleslav Goldman and Dr. Shlomo Segev, as well as
Hadassah officials, did not comment Wednesday.
The condition
of Sharon, who has been hospitalized since last Wednesday night
with his second stroke in less than a month, did not change significantly
Wednesday. Sharon is still in serious but stable condition and his life is
still in danger.
Doctors at Hadassah University Hospital were lowering Prime Minister Ariel
Sharon's sedation to a "minimal" level Wednesday night, in a further
effort to awaken him gradually from the coma in which he has lain since his
massive stroke and brain hemorrhage seven days ago.
The hospital has been gradually reducing Sharon's sedation since Monday.
According to officials from Hadassah University Hospital, Ein Karem, "An
additional slight improvement" in his condition was recorded. A hospital
official told Haaretz on Wednesday that once again, Sharon's movements in
response to pain stimuli were "greater." Also, Sharon's blood
pressure was found to rise when his son spoke to him, one of his attending
physicians, Dr. Felix Umanski, said late on Wednesday.
Dr. Yair Birenbaum, a senior Hadassah official, told Razi Barkai of Army Radio
Wednesday that the decision by Hadassah physicians to give Sharon anticlotting
drugs despite the vascular disease was not, "in my humble opinion, an
error in judgment. The consultation about the prime minister was attended by a
range of doctors with various specialties," and that Sharon's vascular
disease was "one more variable that had to be calculated within a range of
variables."
Dr. Birenbaum also noted that the physicians at Hadassah considered the variety
of blood-thinning drugs available and "considered various options and
decided what was decided by a general consensus of the caregivers."
In response to the call, which appeared in Haaretz Wednesday, by a doctor who
is a department head at a major Israeli hospital, for a state commission of
inquiry into Sharon's treatment, Birenbaum said there is no need for that.
However, he added that "there is plenty of time for examination committees
and snoopers" and promised that if an investigative body is established
"everything will be laid out" before it.
A senior neurologist at a government hospital in the center of the country told
Haaretz Wednesday that "it is known the treatments in modern medicine are
always involved in an attempt to find a balance between risks and rewards, but
in this case it is really impossible to understand the doctors' decision
regarding the use of blood thinners.
"According to the medical literature, after the first stroke it seems as
if the need to use anticoagulants was not very great, after the small hole in
the heart was discovered. Therefore, the question becomes even more pressing
and the world wonders?

A senior member of the Labor Party said Thursday the Bush administration was
intervening in internal Israeli politics and promoting Kadima's Ehud Olmert for
prime minister.
Yitzhak Herzog, a former housing minister and current lawmaker, said the
White House had been firmly behind Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who suffered a
massive stroke last week, and was now shifting it's
support to his presumed successor Olmert in March 28 elections. Herzog
cited reports that Olmert would soon be invited to the White House as evidence.
"Aside from saying 'Go vote Sharon,' they did everything else," he
said. "It is not proper and not appropriate,

Earlier Thursday, US President George W. Bush called Olmert, speaking with the acting Israeli prime minister for the first time since Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a massive stroke last week, according to a statement from Olmert's office.
Bush expressed concern for Sharon, who remained unconscious in critical, but stable condition. Sharon and Bush formed a strong relationship over the past five years.

Bush also said that he would continue to implement the joint vision that he and Sharon had for promoting Middle East peace. He asked Olmert to tell Sharon's sons, Omri and Gilad, that Bush admires their father and wishes him the best, according to the statement.
Bush also said that Hamas, which is running in January 25 parliamentary elections, must change its approach to Israel and recognize the Jewish state's right to exist, the statement said.

When lit up in the dark, the pigs glow green
|
Oh great, three frogs and now pigs aglow saying wheeeeeeeeeeee
They claim that while other researchers have bred partly fluorescent pigs, theirs are the only pigs in the world which are green through and through.
The pigs are transgenic, created by adding genetic material from jellyfish into a normal pig embryo.
The researchers hope the pigs will boost the island's stem cell research, as well as helping with the study of human disease.
The researchers, from National Taiwan University's Department of Animal Science and Technology, say that although the pigs glow, they are otherwise no different from any others.
Taiwan is not claiming a world first. Others have bred partially fluorescent pigs before. But the researchers insist the three pigs they have produced are better.
In daylight, their eyes and skin are green-tinged

They are the only ones that are green from the inside out. Even their heart and internal organs are green, they say.
To create them, DNA from jellyfish was added to about 265 pig embryos which were implanted in eight different pigs.
Four of the pigs became pregnant and three male piglets were born three months ago.
Green generation
In daylight the researchers say the pigs' eyes, teeth and trotters look green. Their skin has a greenish tinge.
In the dark, shine a blue light on them and they glow torch-light bright.
The scientists will use the transgenic pigs to study human disease. Because the pig's genetic material is green, it is easy to spot.
So if, for instance, some of its stem cells are injected into another animal, scientists can track how they develop without the need for a biopsy or invasive test.
But creating them has not been easy. Many of the altered embryos failed to develop.
The researchers say they hope the new, green pigs will mate with ordinary female pigs to create a new generation - much greater numbers of transgenic pigs for use in research.
