Former Israeli experts are training airport police to spot terrorists by the way they act.

Federal officers and local police at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport are testing a new passenger-screening program designed to spot potential terrorists by how they act instead of by what they carry -- a step some fear will lead to racial or ethnic profiling.

Airport police said Saturday that in January they will start a unit trained by former Israeli airport security experts in "behavioral pattern recognition" techniques. The unit will work with the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which began testing a similar system at the airport last month, federal officials said.

On Friday, in a related step, the TSA announced travelers could begin carrying items such as scissors and screwdrivers on planes.

The shift will allow airport security officials to focus on the new passenger screening plan, which eventually may be adopted nationwide.

Jim Welna, deputy federal security director for the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Rochester and St. Cloud airports, said it makes sense to focus on people instead of what's in their pockets.

"We're looking for a needle in a haystack every day," he said. "And most days, the needle is not there."

Welna said the new units will scrutinize travelers for anxious, frightened or deceptive behaviors. Travelers who arouse TSA's suspicions will be questioned, and their answers scored against a secret index. A high score will prompt a call to airport police, who must then decide whether to ask travelers more questions, call counter-terrorism agents, or send them on their way.

Minneapolis is the second large airport in the country where TSA screeners have begun testing the new surveillance system, called Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques, or SPOT, Welna said.

The terrorists who hijacked planes on Sept. 11, 2001, were armed with box cutters. But they could have accomplished the same thing "with a necktie, with a pen," Welna said. "With some folks, bare hands could have done everything that they did on the planes that day."

SPOT is based on a profiling system at Boston's Logan International Airport. Rafi Ron, a former Israeli airport security expert, helped design the program in 2002 and his consulting company in McLean, Virginia, began training Minneapolis-St. Paul airport police in October 2004.

Police here have assigned teams to use the techniques on a "random basis" since then, airport police Lt. Shawn Chamberlain said. He said he's unaware of any potential terrorists who have been snared, but said the system improves police work.

Ron could not be reached for comment. But in 2002, he told a congressional subcommittee that screening technology at security checkpoints is flawed. It can't catch every potential weapon, he said, and manual searches are too intrusive and take too long.

Screeners should focus on those people most likely to cause problems, he said. Passenger profiling methods have been used successfully for three decades in Israel, he noted.

The Air Line Pilots Association has endorsed the program.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) contends such profiling systems may violate the privacy rights of airline passengers and provide dubious security benefits.

The ACLU filed a lawsuit three years ago over the use of similar "drug courier profiles," said Charles Samuelson, executive director of the ACLU in Minnesota. The profiles are used to spot "mules" who carry drugs between cities.

"Our problem with these observation techniques is that we suspect ... the criteria are incredibly flexible," he said. "Their profile is basically to stop black people, stop people of color."

Despite such charges, the U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the constitutionality of such "pretextual stops," giving great deference to the expertise of law enforcement.

Samuelson said the problem with pretextual stops is that there's no way to prove whether the government's criteria are effective because law enforcement suppresses information related to the programs on national security grounds.

But some commentators say racial and ethnic profiling makes sense.

Daniel Pipes, director of the think tank called the Middle East Forum, wrote in an article last year that it's reasonable for screeners to watch for traits like Arabic names and nervousness.

But those are crude measures and terrorists will adapt to avoid detection, he said. Screeners must focus instead on what he calls the heart of the problem, Islamist ideology.

Welna says some countries might find ethnicity or religious beliefs to be useful components of their profiling programs -- but not the United States.

"The selection criteria do not use race, ethnicity, as determining factors. In addition, the selection criteria do not use religion, gender, or national origin," he said.

Welna said reports must be filled out on each passenger who is referred for secondary screening interviews. "At an appropriate time, TSA will commission a study to determine if SPOT has an unjustified adverse impact on the basis of nationality, color, ethnicity, age or gender," he said.

"So there's an awareness to make sure that we don't lose the ability to use this tool, which I think is very helpful," Welna said. "We could lose it either if it's done incorrectly, or if there's a perception that it's done incorrectly."

In a dramatic and unprecedented videotaped interview, Dr. Franciszek Piper, senior curator and director of archives of the Auschwitz State Museum admitted on camera that 'Krema 1,' the alleged 'homicidal gas chamber' shown off to hundreds of thousands of tourists every year at the Auschwitz main camp, was, in fact, fabricated after the war by the Soviet Union -apparently on the direct orders of Josef Stalin.
 
What Piper said - in effect and on camera - was that the explosive 1988 Leuchter Report was correct: no homicidal gassings took place in the buildings designated as 'homicidal gas chambers' at Auschwitz.
 
With this admission by none other than the respected head of the Auschwitz State Museum, one of the most sacred 'facts' of history has been destroyed. This 'gas chamber' is the major historical 'fact' on which much of the foreign and domestic policies of all Western nations since WWII are based.
 
It is the basis for the $100+ billion in foreign aid the United States has poured into the state of Israel since its inception in 1948 - amounting to $16,500 for every man, woman and child in the Jewish state and billions more paid by Germany in 'reparations' - not to mention the constructing of Israel's national telephone, electrical and rail systems...all gifts of the German people. It is the basis for the $10 billion 'loan' (read 'gift') made to Israel for housing its immigrants in the occupied territories...while Americans sleep on the streets and businesses are bankrupted by the thousands. (Note - As of 2004, not a single 'loan' of US tax money made to the state of Israel by Washington has ever been paid back. -ed)
 
Germany is paying 'reparations' - the the United States is making major contributions - to atone for the 'gassings at Auschwitz' and elsewhere. If the 'homicidal gas chambers' were postwar creations of the Soviets, in which no one was gassed regardless of race, creed, color or country of national origin, then these 'reparations' were unnecessary, and were based on fraud.
 
The videotape on which Dr. Piper makes his revelations was made in mid-1992 by a young Jewish investigator, David Cole and follows 12 years of intensive investigation by dozens of historians, journalists and scientists who have tried to get to the bottom of what really happened at Auschwitz.
 
Like most Americans, since his youth, Cole had been instructed in the 'irrefutable fact' that mass homicidal gassings had taken place at Auschwitz. The number of those executed - also declared irrefutable - was 4.1 million.
 
Then came the Leuchter Report in 1988 which was followed with an official 're-evaluation' of the total deaths at Auschwitz (down to 1.1 million). As a budding historian - and a Jew - Cole was intrigued.
 
Previous to 1992, anyone who publicly doubted or questioned the official 4.1 million 'gassing' deaths at Auschwitz was labeled an anti-semite, neo-nazi skinhead at the very least. Quietly, because of revisionist findings, the official figure was lowered to 1.1 million. No mention was made of the missing 3 million.
 
The Cole videotape interview proves that the people who run the Auschwitz State Museum had made a practice of fabricating 'proofs' of homicidal gassings. Keep in mind that over the years millions of tourists have been told that 'Krema 1' is in its original state, while officials knew that 'original state' is a lie.
 
The political, religious, financial and historical ramifications of this proof of no homicidal gas chambers at Auschwitz cannot be measured. Coupled with the Leuchter Report, the Cole interview with Dr. Piper on videotape proves that what Western governments have taught about the Auschwitz gas chamber since WWII is a lie. It proves that what televangelists such as Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson have been telling their flocks is simply not true.
 
No one, regardless of race, creed, color or country of national origin was gassed to death in any building so designated at Auschwitz. And without 'homicidal gas chambers' at Auschwitz, where is the reasoning for the special treatment of the state of Israel?

US gathers allies for Iran sanctions

 

The US is preparing for the possibility that it will have to deal with Iran's nuclear program without the assistance of the UN Security Council. In the past weeks the administration has been working with European and Japanese allies on a "menu" of sanctions that could be imposed on Iran even if the issue is not referred to the UN Security Council. According to well-placed sources in Washington, the sanctions being discussed are focused on trade issues, since almost half of Iran's trade is with Europe and Japan.

The talks on multilateral non-UN sanctions are intended to ensure that the pressure on Iran will not expire even if the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) decides in its March 2006 meeting not to refer Iran to the Security Council. The US itself already has Iran under a regime of sanctions deriving from the Iran-Libya Sanction Act, and congress is expected to take on in the next few months proposals of a new sanction bill that will limit even more the possibility of foreign companies to conduct business with Iran.

American ties with Iran are also restricted because Iran is on the US list of countries sponsoring terror.

The US administration is focusing on the next three months, before the IAEA meeting, in establishing a stable majority that will be in favor of referring Iran to the Security Council. The focus is on Russia, that is still trying to broker a deal with the Iranians, but diplomatic effort is also directed at China, India and South Africa.

American officials told their Israeli counterparts recently that the US would take the Iran issue to the UN only if it is sure that the case is "veto proof," meaning that it has assurances from the permanent members in the Security Council not to use their veto power to bloc a resolution against Iran.

The American officials also assured the Israelis that the US will not give Iran any security guarantees in return for cooperation on the nuclear issue and that the US believes it is essential to keep the pressure on Iran until it proves full compliance with the demands of the international community.

Only days after Russia's $1 billion arms and missile sale to Iran was announced, Ha'aretz and the Jerusalem Post are reporting that the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed that Iran is no more than a "few months" away from having a nuclear bomb.

Understand this well. Russia's missiles will be used to try shoot down Israeli, US, and Allied bombers sent to bomb Iran's (Russian-supplied) nukes out of existence.

The best way to have stopped Iran from gaining nuclear status would have been to stop Russia from supplying Iran with the technology in the first place, and the way to do that was by promoting real democracy in Russia. As regular readers of this blog know, one group has consistently sided with Putin against democracy, has served as a cover for Putin's crackdown on pro-democracy forces,  and has acted as his overseas shill – Chabad and its "chief rabbi" of Russia, Berel Lazar. Chabad scratches Putin's back and in return gets control over Jewish life – and control of Jewish communal assets – throughout the FSU. UN will not end Iran nuke probe: ElBaradei

VIENNA: The head of the UN nuclear watchdog, Muhammad ElBaradei, said on Monday he was not ready to end his two-year probe of Iran’s atomic programme, which Washington says is a cover for a nuclear weapons programme. “The Iran file will be closed when we close all the issues that are still open,” ElBaradei told reporters after the governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) unanimously approved a third term for him as IAEA chief. “We are inching forward but I’d like to have more speedy cooperation on the part of Iran,” he added.

Iran insists that its nuclear programme is entirely peaceful. While ElBaradei has found no hard proof that Washington is right about Tehran’s nuclear plans, he says it is too early to say whether the programme is exclusively peaceful.

ElBaradei praised Iran for granting access to nuclear materials inside the country and for suspending its uranium enrichment programme, which could be used to make purified uranium fuel for atomic power plants or weapons.

However, he said that Iran needed to provide more information about its enrichment centrifuge programme.

He said Iran had honoured its promised suspension of nuclear fuel cycle activities. Iran has “honoured its suspension of nuclear fuel cycle activities. This is important,” he told reporters

“On the extent and nature of (Iran’s) centrifuge programme, we still need more information,” ElBaradei said.

Earlier, the IAEA unanimously re-appointed ElBaradei as its chief, a spokeswoman said, after Washington dropped its opposition to a man who had questioned US weapons intelligence on Iraq.

ElBaradei told reporters he was “humbled and awed” at his appointment by consensus to a third term as IAEA director general and said he expected to be able to work well with the US, which has also criticised him for being too soft on Iran.

He said that when he had met in Washington last week with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, “We did not discuss the past. We did not discuss my election. We looked together forward. We agreed we have a lot of common objectives.”

“We need to stem the proliferation of nuclear weapons. We need to insure the authority of the agency in terms of verification. We need to have better control over the sensitive (nuclear) fuel cycle (in countries worldwide) and we need to have a more efficient compliance mechanism (with safeguards of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty),” ElBaradei said. reuters/afp

El Baradei: Iran only months away from a bomb

IAEA chairman Muhammad ElBaradei on Monday confirmed Israel's assessment that Iran is only a few months away from creating an atomic bomb.

If Teheran indeed resumed its uranium enrichment in other plants, as threatened, it will take it only "a few months" to produce a nuclear bomb, El-Baradei told The Independent.

On the other hand, he warned, any attempt to resolve the crisis by non-diplomatic means would "open a Pandora's box. There would be efforts to isolate Iran; Iran would retaliate; and at the end of the day you have to go back to the negotiating table to find the solution."

U.S. Army report: Israel can't stop Iran nukes

WASHINGTON — Geopolitical limitations render Israel's air force militarily incapable of halting Iran's nuclear weapons program according to a new report published the by U.S. Army War College.

The report asserts Israel lacks the military capability to locate and destroy Iranian nuclear assets. The report said the Israel Air Force cannot operate at such long distances from its bases.

"The Israeli Air Force has formidable capabilities and enjoys unchallenged supremacy vis-à-vis the other Middle East air powers, but Israel has no aircraft carriers and it cannot use airbases in other Middle East states," the report entitled "Getting Ready for a Nuclear-Ready Iran," said. "Therefore its operational capabilities are reduced when the targets are located far from its territory."

[On Sunday, Israeli Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Dan Halutz warned that diplomatic pressure would not stop Iran's nuclear weapons program, Middle East Newsline reported. Halutz was one of three senior Israeli officials who warned that Iran would soon be able to turn into a nuclear power.]

In an article authored by Shlomo Brom, former head of air force strategic planning, the report said Israel's deep-strike air capability was based on the F-15I and F-16C/D aircraft. At a range of more than 600 kilometers, Brom said, Israel could not sustain an air campaign. Iran is about 1,000 kilometers from Israel.

"It is possible to determine that at long ranges — more then 600 kilometers — the IAF is capable of a few surgical strikes, but it is not capable of a sustained air campaign against a full array of targets," the report said.

An Israeli air attack on Iran must also include such support aircraft as air refueling, electronic countermeasures, support, communication, and rescue, the report said. The mission would also require precision intelligence.

Brom said Israel's intelligence and military community was divided over the Iranian threat. He said military intelligence regards Iran as determined to destroy Israel. The Mossad and National Security Council see Teheran as preoccupied with national defense and regime survival.

"While the first school assumes no political pressure can force Iran to stop its military nuclear program, the other school believes that political pressure can be effective in at least delaying the nuclear program significantly," the report said. "The second school believes that a nuclear Iran with a different regime will not pose a high risk to Israel and can be easily deterred."

The report said the Bush-ehr nuclear power plant was vulnerable to attacks but does not constitute a key element of the military nuclear program. As a result, the destruction of Bush-ehr would not have a significant effect on Iran's military program.

Brom said Iranian nuclear assets are located between 1,500 and 1,700 kilometers from Israel. The report expressed doubts whether such Israeli allies as India and Turkey would allow Israel to launch a military strike from their territory.

"This means that the Israeli attack aircraft would have to take off from air bases in Israel, fly 1,500-1,700 kilometers to the targets, destroy them, and then fly back 1,500-1,700 kilometers," the report said.

The Israel Air Force has 25 F-15I and 137 F-16C/D fighter-bombers. The air force has already received more than 20 F-16Is, with longer range on the F-15I, but the report said the F-15I aircraft contains greater capabilities at long ranges.

The report said the F-15I has an operational radius of 1,270 kilometers. The F-16I has an operational radius of 2,100 kilometers while that of the F-16C/D is 925 kilometers.

But the report said the real operational radius was shorter because the planes would have to fly at low altitude to avoid radar detection. Brom said the Israeli aircraft could avoid Iranian air defense but would be detected.

"In any case, any Israeli attack on an Iranian nuclear target would be a very complex operation in which a relatively large number of attack aircraft and support aircraft — interceptors, ECM [electronic counter-measures] aircraft, refuelers, and rescue aircraft — would participate," the report said. "The conclusion is that Israel could attack only a few Iranian targets and not as part of a sustainable operation over time, but as a one time surprise operation."

Former Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Talmudic Hassidic Aholah of Dan the Red Sofiet of the North) hinted that he could consider a pre-emptive air strike against Iran's nuclear installations if he were to be re-elected. Netanyahu, who is widely expected to regain the leadership of the right-wing Likud party later this month, said Israel needed to "act in the spirit" of the late premier Menachem Begin who ordered an air strike on Iraq's Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981.

"I view the development of the Iranian nuclear (programme) as a paramount threat and as a real danger to the future of the state of Israel," Netanyahu told the Yediot Aharonot newspaper.

"Israel needs to do everything to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear threat against it."

"We need to act in the spirit of Menachem Begin, who defied the entire world and with a bold step prevented Iraq from arming itself with nuclear weapons."

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Netanyahu's arch rival said last week that Israel would never allow its arch-enemy Iran to come into possession of nuclear weapons.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad caused an international backlash in October when he called for the Jewish state to be "wiped off the map".

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in September found Iran in non-compliance with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, paving the way for the matter to be referred to the UN Security Council if Iran does not halt nuclear fuel work and cooperate fully with an IAEA investigation.

Iran has insisted that its nuclear programme is merely designed to meet domestic energy needs.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - Saddam Hussein's defense team walked out of court Monday, the former leader yelled at the judge, and Saddam's half brother shouted "Why don't you just execute us!" in an often unruly court session that also saw former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark speak on behalf of the deposed president.

After the lawyers walked out, Saddam, shaking his right hand, told the judge: "You are imposing lawyers on us. They are imposed lawyers. The court is imposed by itself. We reject that."

Clark said he needed only two minutes to present his argument. But Chief Judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin at first said only Saddam's chief lawyer could speak. Amin said the defense should submit its motion in writing and warned that if the defense walked out then the court would appoint replacement lawyers.

Saddam and his half brother Barazan Ibrahim then chanted "Long live Iraq, long live the Arab state."

Ibrahim stood up and shouted: "Why don't you just execute us and get rid of all of this!"

When the judge explained that he was ruling in accordance with the law, Saddam replied: "This is a law made by America and does not reflect Iraqi sovereignty."

It was the third court session in the trial of Saddam and seven co-defendants - accused in the 1982 killing of more than 140 Shiites after an assassination attempt against the president in Dujail - where Saddam at times appeared to be in control of the court as much as the judge presiding over the trial.

After the walk-out and a 90-minute recess to resolve the issue, the court reconvened and Amin allowed Clark and ex-Qatari Justice Minister Najib al-Nueimi to speak on the questions of the legitimacy of the tribunal and safety of the lawyers.

"Reconciliation is essential," Clark told the court. "This trial can divide or heal. Unless it is seen as absolutely fair, and fair in fact, it will divide rather than reconcile Iraq."

At that point the judge reminded Clark that he was to speak only about the security guarantees for the defense lawyers - two of whom have been assassinated since the trial began Oct. 19.

Clark then said all parties were entitled to protection and the measures offered to protect the defense and their families were "absurd." Clark said that without such protection, the judicial system would collapse.

Al-Nueimi then spoke about the legitimacy issue, arguing that court is not independent and was in fact set up under the U.S.-led occupation rather than by a legal Iraqi government. He said the language of the statute was unchanged from that promulgated by the former top U.S. administrator in Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, and was therefore "illegitimate."

After the lawyers spoke, the first witness to take the stand, Ahmed Hassan Mohammed, began his testimony. He said that after an assassination attempt on Saddam, security agencies took people of all ages from age 14 to over age 70.

"There were mass arrests. Women and men. Even if a child was 1-day-old they used to tell his parents, 'Bring him with you,"' Mohammed said. He said he was taken to a security center where "I saw bodies of people from Dujail."

"They were martyrs I knew," Mohammed said, giving the name of the nine whose bodies were there.

The first witness earlier exchanged insults with Saddam's half brother, telling him "you killed a 14-year-old boy."

"To hell," the half brother, Ibrahim, replied.

"You and your children go to hell," the witness replied.

The judge then asked them to avoid such exchanges.

"There was random arrests in the streets, all the forces of the (Baath) party, and Thursday became 'Judgment Day' and Dujail has become a battle front," the witness said, sometime fighting back tears. "Shootings started and nobody could leave or enter Dujail. At night, intelligence agents arrived headed by Barazan" Ibrahim.

At this point Ibrahim interrupted him, saying that "I am a patriot and I was the head of the intelligence service of Iraq."

In a letter to his wife, ethnic novelist Ingrid Rimland, Ernst Zundel ponders the mood of the opening of Germany's Holocaust Heresy Trial:
 
My dear Ingrid -
 
Never before have I been confronted with such a situation - it is in every respect surreal.   Only you with your artistic nature would fully comprehend it. Here is the clip:  I am the captain of my ship, captain of my soul, and like [the hero] in the Odyssey, I have just passed through some hair-raising storms and travails and have been more or less shipwrecked on some foreign shore.  I don't have any maps of these, for me, uncharted waters.  So I hire someone who, like Mark Twain, knows the mighty Mississippi River, and tells me, the captain:  Turn here. Cross there.  Avoid this rock, that shoal.  Watch the sand bank over there.  My lawyers, who have had a lifetime of experience in navigating in these dangerous and tricky German waters, tell me to take a course of action totally at odds with what my instincts tell me I should do.
 
The lousiest decisions in my life were always those when my mind overruled my intuition.  The worst results stemmed precisely from this dichotomy. To all other people this would sound odd, but not to you, for you know me by now pretty well. You sensed that I was working on an intuitive plan.  I formulated it, outlined it - and saw it torn to shreds by the reality of the legal system as it exists - not as it is written in the criminal code of present-day, post-WWII Germany. Now I sail my ship of fate in unfamiliar waters on the guidance of people who are my trusted advisors, but whose instincts I distrust.  Apparently there is a vast difference in Germany between the letter of the law and the spirit of the law as applied - far more pronounced, it seems to me after yesterday's encounter with the lawyers, than even in America or Canada.
 
Thus, my lady, what will unfold is not my intuitively arrived-at solution, which I not only felt but intellectually believed would have allowed the German justice system to extricate itself from an impossible cul de sac into which the politicians have driven the people, into which opportunistic legislators, financed by and beholden to powerful lobbies, the bane of modern societies, have forced them.  It will ultimately lead to this civilization's collapse.  I firmly believe this.  This is how Greece, Rome, Czardom and Weimar perished!  In the context of German reality, at this time, as I find it in the courtroom in Mannheim, I have little choice but to take my pilots' advice - or risk an even greater shipwreck. 
 
One day, Ingrid, when all this is over, I will explain my plan to you and to the world at large.  This is not the time, not the place, not the right medium in the form of a letter to be read in a few days by the very man who will sit in judgment over me.  I have spent many weeks and months plowing through 30 four-to-five inch thick ring binders of "evidence" gathered by the German states' various police forces, intelligence agencies, snitches and informants.  Ingrid, the German authorities do not lack information about what the issues are that confront them and concern them and their history.  The problem is how they use, or misuse, that information.
 
I give you an example of the spirit afoot here.  A 78-year-old academic of high rank tried bravely to defend himself by explaining, very cautiously and carefully phrased, why he had certain views and doubts - and was promptly recharged again!  He defended himself again - and was recharged for the third time!  It took my breath away when, last night and this morning, I read the details of this case, and others - all 2004-2005 cases! - that convinced me to let my head overrule my intuition. 
 
The German people must find their way out of this dilemma collectively.  I alone cannot achieve it for them.  My fellow independent thinkers cannot achieve it for them.  The playing field is not level.  The goal posts are being changed daily.

I am afraid the veneer came off yesterday. It was good that it came off so early in these proceedings!  My lawyers were proven right.  Had I insisted on my plan, I would have looked like Hans-guck-in-die-Luft.  [Ernst is referring to a German parable of a boy with his head in the clouds, not watching where he is going]  Since I saw friends from all over in the audience, I am sure that you will have had reports about what went on inside. Since I saw the judicial system and its representatives of this current German entity in action, I think it is better I censor myself severely!
 
The 8th November '05 hearing was in content and in conduct something that school children will one day read about.  It will one day be part of the German law school curriculum - trust me, Ingrid!  I saw all kinds of people in the court room - from Chile, Paraguay, the US, England, Canada, France, Belgium, Austria - I was actually surprised that so many people came from so far away to show their moral support!  The room was large, bright, the sound system was far superior to what it was in Canadian courtrooms.  97% of the time one could hear clearly what Dr. Meinerzhagen said or read from documents.  He looked again, unnervingly, like my mentor, Mr. Arcand.  The prosecutor is an elegant, good-looking, well-groomed man of maybe 42-45 years, with bright eyes, good skin, clear diction - but his job is his job. 
 
Ingrid, they will prevail in the courtroom.  But Truth in History has been the winner since my February 1981 postal hearings.
 
It was proven to me one more time that German people are ill-equipped as hypocrites. Very quickly the German penchant for directness and honesty comes to the surface - and that's what happened in court yesterday.  Germans will be Germans!  [Had you been here], you would have seen some live fire exercises in the authoritarian personality syndrome in action! Ingrid, these people chafe under this Allied-devised and conquerors'-imposed situation and its institutions as if they were wearing the proverbial hair shirt. 
 
What I saw yesterday makes me realize how lucky I was, and how fortunate for the German Cause and history it was, that I fought all my historic trials in a country under an organically evolved British Common Law based legal system.  What we were able to achieve there, THEN, would simply have been impossible under the system in place here, at this time.  There is a God in Heaven who destined Ernst Zundel to do his work and live his most vital and important years in an Anglo-Saxon environment.  I am happy about that. All the sophistry, the mental barf they spread via the media over the German people comes into direct confrontation with eternal truths and concepts to the point that it gives me goose pimples.  The tragedy for Germany is that the laws were legislated by the very people the mass-circulation Bild-Zeitung called "the grand coalition of thieves." I agree with you about "excising the evil" - especially after I saw how the German system works. 
 
There is at this time no charismatic leader, male or female, to exploit the rampant disintegration.  The German Titanic is severely listing, taking on water - and these professional liars are busy rearranging the chairs on the deck?  There is a "let them eat cake", Marie-Antoinette surreal feeling that has settled like a Smoky Mountain ground fog over our fatherland. All those living here and under the system know that we are seeing the end of the postwar era.  I believe that Helmut Schröder's inexplicable stepping back after his loud claim to the chancellorship on election night, and also Joschka Fisher's slinking quietly into the political wilderness, is so totally atypical of those two men that, in my opinion, someone, some force from somewhere, must have confronted them with arguments to go quietly - but to go! You can be sure that the East Coast did not forgive those two men for not joining in the rape of Iraq!  For them it was, Game Over!  It was Iraq Payback Time! I am surprised they lasted as long as they did!
 
It is clear that the old order of things is expiring.  I read here that the Republican majority - some 28 US senators in President Bush's own party - refused to vote for an important piece of legislation, about oil of all things!  Oil is Cheney's and Bush's power base - and his own party denied him a majority.  That is a clear sign that Bush is truly a lame duck president from now on, and things also concerning 9/11.  There will be movement. 
 
How far?  From within prison walls, it's hard to be specific, but there is a new fluidity similar to what I felt, sensed and saw before the East German and Soviet Union regimes of almost 70 years collapsed, imploded silently, became history - gone in spite of atomic rockets and submarines.
 
Tonight they are supposed to have a TV Special Report on the Zundel Case - shades of Canada 1985-2000!  It is amazing to me how all this developed.  It sometimes is a bit as if life had placed me in the eye of a hurricane where there reigns an eerie calm, while all around me in a safe distance howling storms whip up gigantic waves in mountains of greenish froth which scare untold millions out of their wits.  Twenty years ago a London Times writer asked:  "What manner of truth is this man Zundel in touch with to create such a furor?"  That's the one question I keep asking myself:  What on earth is it, exactly, that so unnerves these people?  The incredible over-reaction!  You can be sure, Ingrid, that there is an equal mountain of evidence implicating U.S. bureaucrats, US spy services and lobbyists [conspiring] to throw me out of a country of almost 300 million people.  For doing what, exactly?  Asking a five-word question - DID SIX MILLION REALLY DIE?  One question?  30,000 words in that little essay written 31 years ago by a university student?  Think about the disturbance this caused! 
 
It is this more than strange energy vortex that fascinates me, that convinces me that there is some force we do not yet understand, that we are approaching or tapping into without even knowing or comprehending.  History can be very instructive.  As you know, I have taken the long view in all this, and I am not inclined to change my attitude.  My belief in an inscrutable but basic order in the cosmos has not changed.  I did not survive all these trials, tribulations, persecutions, the bombs and the arson, for NO reason.  You could say that with all the misfortune which has befallen me - and, by extension, now you - I have been very fortunate.  And so will you be also!
 
So, my hard-working wife, I am thinking of you, and looking at your gentle, intelligent face - your bookmark does you justice. Ingrid, I will keep the dream alive.  It is not geography-bound.

Officials in at least two nations now suspect the avian flu bug has mutated into a virus that is being transmitted from human to human – a development world health authorities have estimated could result in the deaths of tens of millions.

Thai health officials have expressed concern that the country's two latest confirmed victims may be the beginning of the much feared human-to-human transmission.

Dr. Charoen Chuchottaworn, an avian-flu expert at the Public Health Ministry, said doctors reviewing the cases were alerted by the very mild symptoms present in both patients, neither of whom had had any recent contact with birds or poultry.

The doctors are unsure as to how either of the infected contracted the disease and have raised the possibility that the virus has traded its pathogenicity for ease of transmission

Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the disease is spreading so rapidly, particularly in the capital of Jakarta, some health officials strongly suspect the long-dreaded mutation has already occurred.

"There are just too many people who have it," said one doctor. "In many cases, it is difficult to establish any contact with birds."

Another official said the flu has "spread all over the city."

The latest victim confirmed officially by the Ministry of Health is a 25-year-old woman. She was treated at Tangerang Hospital before being transferred to Sulianti Saroso. The woman had difficulty breathing and a breathing tube had to be inserted.

The World Health Organization-sanctioned laboratory in Hong Kong has so far confirmed 13 bird flu cases in humans in Indonesia, with eight people dying from the virus.

Separately, Minister of Health Siti Fadila Supari said Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche had given Indonesia approval to produce its antiviral drug Tamiflu to fight bird flu in humans.

So far the government has relied on donors such as Singapore, Japan and Australia for its supply of Tamiflu.

The government also said it would launch a yearlong operation against bird flu, involving the military, house-to-house checks and mass culls of birds across the country.

"The president has said that until 2006, for one year, we will intensively eradicate bird flu virus," said Minister of Agriculture Anton Apriyantono.

He said the yearlong program would include weekly checks of backyard farms and larger farms in Greater Jakarta for infected birds.

The Jakarta Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Agency today destroyed some 500 chickens and pet birds in Utan Kayu, where a number of infected birds have been found.

Famine?

From about 2,000 tests conducted by the agency in 30 of the capital's 267 subdistricts, dozens of infected birds were found in the subdistricts of Ceger, Utan Kayu, Pondok Kelapa, Duren Sawit and Cipinang Melayu, all in East Jakarta, as well as in Sunter Jaya and Cilincing in North Jakarta, Kapuk in West Jakarta, and Petojo in Central Jakarta.

With one small genetic adjustment in Influenza A, or H5N1, millions of people could die, warns World Health Organization Regional Director for the Western Pacific Shigeru Omi. Omi has called for health ministers and representatives to launch an all-out war on the deadly strain.

If the virus acquires sufficient human genes, allowing transmission from one person to another, an estimated 2 million to 7.4 million people around the world could die, the WHO estimates.

Some health officials make even more dire predictions. They point to the great flu pandemic of 1918-1919, which killed far more people worldwide than died in World War I – an estimated 40 to 50 million people.

There are more signs the virus is spreading – outward from Asia and through Europe. Romania appears to be the hardest hit.

Three more villages in eastern Romania have been quarantined following the discovery of an H5 strain of avian influenza in poultry in one of the villages. The Romanian Ministry of Agriculture suspects the presence of bird flu in the other villages but is awaiting confirmation of test results from the United Kingdom.

 

Culling has begun in the area, and authorities estimate that 9,500 birds will be killed.

Romanian Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur said today that 10,000 birds have been slaughtered following the discovery this week of three cases of avian flu in the Danube Delta.

"The villages of Periprava as well as Dudescu and Bumbacari have been placed under quarantine and the soil has been disinfected," he told journalists. "We have also alerted the Ukrainian authorities, since the village of Periprava is only three kilometers (two miles) from the frontier."

Although the latest cases have been identified as the H5 variety, more tests are being carried out to find out if the virus belongs to the deadly H5NI strain that has killed more than 60 people in Asia and is feared as a possible source of a human flu pandemic.

A member of the national animal health authority, Florica Durlea, warned that the risk of avian flu remained, because new waves of migratory birds are expected as a result of mild temperatures.

The Danube Delta is a stopping off point for birds flying from central Asia and Russia.

So far, 12 outbreaks of bird flu have been detected in Romania.

In China, a team from the World Health Organization investigating the deaths from avian influenza said the extent of the problem in the country -- and elsewhere -- may be worse than initially thought.

Dick Thompson, a WHO spokesman in Geneva, told the New York Times, "In some cases the surveillance system may not be there. We're not nosing around, but we may be able to provide (China with) some technical expertise."

The H5N1 bird flu virus has killed at least 68 people in Asia since 2003.

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt announced the purchase of additional vaccine that could be used in the event of a potential influenza pandemic.

The department has awarded a $62.5 million contract to Chiron Corp. to manufacture an avian influenza vaccine designed to protect against the H5N1 influenza virus strain. The number of individuals who could be protected by the newly contracted vaccine is still to be determined by ongoing clinical studies.

"An influenza vaccine effective against the H5N1 virus is our best hope of protecting the American people from a virus for which they have no immunity," said Leavitt. "This contract will increase our stockpile of the vaccine and is a continuation of our aggressive multi-pronged approach to a potentially critical public health challenge."

This purchase builds on the department's current plans to buy enough H5N1 influenza vaccine for 20 million people and enough influenza antivirals for another 20 million people. These supplies of vaccine and antiviral treatment will be placed in the nation's Strategic National Stockpile where they will be available for use should an influenza pandemic occur. Recently, HHS awarded a $100 million contract to sanofi pasteur, the vaccines business of the sanofi-aventis Group, for avian flu vaccine

This is astonishing. How can it be explained?
 
Eisenhower's Crusade in Europe is a book of 559 pages; the six volumes of Churchill's Second World War total 4,448 pages; and de Gaulle's three-volume Mémoires de guerre is 2,054 pages. In this mass of writing, which altogether totals 7,061 pages (not including the introductory parts), published from 1948 to 1959, one will find no mention either of Nazi "gas chambers," a "genocide" of the Jews, or of "six million" Jewish victims of the war.

LONDON (UPI) -- A Vietnamese doctor with experience in treating avian flu says Tamiflu, the drug being stockpiled for treatment of avian flue is useless against the virus.

Dr. Nguyen Tuong Van of the Centre for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi has treated 41 victims of H5N1, following World Health Organization guidelines and administering Tamiflu to her patients. She told the Sunday Times of London the medicine had no effect.
 
"We place no importance on using this drug on our patients," she said. "Tamiflu is really only meant for treating ordinary type A flu. It was not designed to combat H5N1."
 
The newspaper said the finding casts doubt on the British government's pandemic flu policy. The nation's top medical official, Sir Liam Donaldson, has ordered 15 million doses of Tamiflu be stockpiled.

Van said the only way to keep avian flu patients alive is to "support" all their vital organs -- including the liver and kidneys -- with modern technology like ventilators and dialysis machines, the Sunday Times reported.

Death By Torture: US Media Ignores Hard Evidence

Military autopsy reports provide indisputable proof that detainees are being tortured to death while in US military custody. Yet the US corporate media are covering it with the seriousness of a garage sale for the local Baptist Church.

A recent American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) posting of one of forty-four US military autopsy reports reads as follows:

"Final Autopsy Report: DOD 003164, (Detainee) Died as a result of asphyxia (lack of oxygen to the brain) due to strangulation as evidenced by the recently fractured hyoid bone in the neck and soft tissue hemorrhage extending downward to the level of the right thyroid cartilage. Autopsy revealed bone fracture, rib fractures, contusions in mid abdomen, back and buttocks extending to the left flank, abrasions, lateral buttocks. Contusions, back of legs and knees; abrasions on knees, left fingers and encircling to left wrist. Lacerations and superficial cuts, right 4th and 5th fingers. Also, blunt force injuries, predominately recent contusions (bruises) on the torso and lower extremities. Abrasions on left wrist are consistent with use of restraints. No evidence of defense injuries or natural disease. Manner of death is homicide. Whitehorse Detainment Facility, Nasiriyah, Iraq."

The ACLU website further reveals how: "a 27-year-old Iraqi male died while being interrogated by Navy Seals on April 5, 2004, in Mosul, Iraq. During his confinement he was hooded, flex-cuffed, sleep deprived and subjected to hot and cold environmental conditions, including the use of cold water on his body and hood. The exact cause of death was "undetermined" although the autopsy stated that hypothermia may have contributed to his death.

Another Iraqi detainee died on January 9, 2004, in Al Asad, Iraq, while being interrogated. He was standing, shackled to the top of a doorframe with a gag in his mouth, at the time he died. The cause of death was asphyxia and blunt force injuries.

So read several of the 44 US military autopsy reports on the ACLU website -evidence of extensive abuse of US detainees in Iraq and Afghanistan 2002 through 2004. Anthony Romero, Executive Director of ACLU stated, "There is no question that US interrogations have resulted in deaths." ACLU attorney Amrit Sing adds, "These documents present irrefutable evidence that US operatives tortured detainees to death during interrogations."

Additionally, ACLU reports that in April 2003, Secretary Rumsfeld authorized the use of "environmental manipulation" as an interrogation technique in Guantánamo Bay. In September 2003, Lt. Gen. Sanchez also authorized this technique for use in Iraq. So responsibility for these human atrocities goes directly to the highest levels of power.

A press release on these deaths by torture was issued by the ACLU on October 25, 2005 and was immediately picked up by Associated Press and United Press International wire services, making the story available to US corporate media nationwide. A thorough check of Nexus-Lexus and Proquest electronic data bases, using the keywords ACLU and autopsy, showed that at least 95percent of the daily papers in the US didn't bother to pick up the story. The Los Angeles Times covered the story on page A-4 with a 635-word report headlined "Autopsies Support Abuse Allegations." Fewer than a dozen other daily newspapers including: Bangor Daily News, Maine, page 8; Telegraph-Herald, Dubuque Iowa, page 6; Charleston Gazette, page 5; Advocate, Baton Rouge, page 11; and a half dozen others actually covered the story. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Seattle Times buried the story inside general Iraq news articles. USA Today posted the story on their website. MSNBC posted the story to their website, but apparently did not consider it newsworthy enough to air on television.

"The Randi Rhodes Show," on Air America Radio, covered the story. AP/UPI news releases and direct quotes from the ACLU website appeared widely on internet sites and on various news-based listservs around the world, including Common Dreams, Truthout, New Standard, Science Daily, and numerous others.

What little attention the news of the US torturing prisoners to death did get has completely disappeared as context for the torture stories now appearing in corporate media. A Nexus-Lexus search November 30, 2005 of the major papers in the US using the word torture turned up over 1,000 stories in the last 30 days. None of these included the ACLU report as supporting documentation on the issue.

How can the American public understand the gravity of the torture that is currently being committed in our name when the issue is being reported with no reference to the extent to which these crimes against humanity have gone? Has the internet become the only source of real news for mainstream Americans while the corporate media only tells us what they want us to know?

Bibi Trying to Form New Government, Prevent Elections

Binyamin (Bibi) Netanyahu is trying to form a new government before Thursday, when the order for new elections comes into effect. He lacks six supporters.

The former finance minister has the support of 55 Knesset members from several parties, which according to current polling data are expected to suffer severe losses in the next elections, according to the Hebrew web site NFC and Israel Radio.

Besides Knesset members in the Likud who oppose Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, MKs in the National Religious Party, Shas, National Union and United Torah Judaism (Talmud Bavli Noahidism) are backing the move. If Netanyahu succeeds in forming and holding together a coalition, he will become Prime Minister and enable the current Knesset to continue in session until its mandate expires next November.

NFC reported that Netanyahu is trying to convince Shinui party leader Yosef (Tomy) Lapid to back his effort. Shinui has been the hardest hit in the polls, which predict that the secular party will receive only five mandates, one-third of its present strength, in the next election.

Aides to Netanyahu explained that if he can establish an alternative government, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's new Kadima party will become an opposition party and will lose the momentum which has swept recent polls at the expense of almost every other party except Labor.

In other election developments, former Prime Minister Ehud Barak said he will not run in the party's primaries, but will stay in the party. Aides said he might try to challenge Amir Peretz's leadership at a later date.

Barak called off a meeting with Peretz that had been scheduled for Saturday, aimed at settling a dispute between the two concerning Barak's role in the party. He has expressed fears that Peretz will turn Labor into a copy of the Am Echad faction, which Peretz led before merging it with Labor. The faction had only three MKs, one of whom defected, and was led on the strength of Peretz's standing as leader of the Histadrut national labor union.

The First Word: Change is not easy. Appreciate it

Most Jews did not notice the recent passing of the 40th anniversary of Nostra Aetate. This is a pity. Even the most cautious and cynical among us should recognize that this Vatican II document might have been the most significant development in our relationship with a long-standing adversary. Whether it fulfills this promise may depend in no small measure on our reaction to it.

Nostra Aetate (In Our Time) changed notions about the Jewish people that had held sway for almost 2,000 years. For almost all that time, two attitudes of the Catholic Church guaranteed contempt and persecution of Jews as a matter of quasi-religious principle.

The first was the charge of deicide - that all Jews were responsible for the Crucifixion. In the popular mind, it meant that Jews were guilty of the most heinous crime imaginable, and might be made to pay for it with their lives. They often did.

Any one who murders are of the murderer from the Beginning. In Christ who is the Life Giver, there is no MURDER. This was carefully designed to bring in the Talmudic Noahide laws for Both the Sanhedrin and the catholicos of Simon Magus

The second notion was replacement, or changes in the special relationship between God and Israel that is so clearly expressed in the Bible. 

Yeah the "replacement theology" of the Hassidic Pharisees who rejected the TRUE Vine from the Beginning the WORD of GOD and Replaced HIM with their tradition god who is no GOD of Talmud Bavli, which Makes the WORD of GOD of None effect to them in their Hatred for mankind. Now they hope to FORCE all of mankind to bow to their Babylonian non God their Tetragrammaton YVWH that angel of darkness transformed into an angel of "Illuminated Sparks"

 

According to this doctrine, the Israel of the Bible was "replaced" by the New Israel - namely practicing Christians.

Jews had no further place in history, other than to survive until the end of time, bearing witness to their mistake in rejecting the true religion, and along the way testifying to their degeneracy by living as the cast-offs of civilized society. The greatest gift one could offer them was the chance to convert. Alternatively, they could choose death. They often did.

Nostra Aetate upended both notions. It taught that Jews do not bear any more collective responsibility for the death of the Christian savior than any other people. It affirmed that God's covenant with the Jewish people is unbroken and eternal.

God Crucified God for the Plan of Salvation only unto them who BELIEVE and are Born again converted to his Plan of the Redeemer from the beginning the Everlasting Holy Covenant. Until a flesh jew says Blessed is he who Comes in the name of the LORD, their house is left desolate. For the Chooser from the Beginning Chose Israel for Salvation, and when the Choose came the majority who say they are flesh jews rejected him and cried give us the "Robber" they chose....the "Robber" they received.

Jews - especially traditional Jews filled with a sense of the permanence of God's Word - wonder how this could be done. How do you change a belief that the faithful assumed century after century? They do not understand that the Church does not see change as impossible.

The Catholic Church overflows with tradition; it allows only for very slow change. But it does allow for it. Later generations can and do rethink old issues as society develops.

Unlike other Christian denominations, when change occurs within the Catholic Church it has both teeth and staying power. The Church is hierarchical and authoritarian. When it speaks, its adherents are expected to listen. This means that the shift in attitude of the Catholic Church is binding, and will likely be around for the foreseeable future.

A third element of Nostra Aetate concerned how people should act towards Jews. Anti-Semitism is now officially noted as a sin. 

 

For me, this alone is significant. To all skeptics: would you rather live in a world in which a hundred million Catholics see you as a collaborator of the Devil, or one in which they are instructed not to hate you?

Occasionally, I used to share a mike on a Los Angeles radio program with a bright and articulate Franciscan whose friendship I came to value. One Sunday, after he was transferred to another parish, a couple stopped after the service to tell him "Father, it doesn't matter what you say. The trouble with this country is still those people."

He argued with them for a while; they held their own, and eventually just walked away. He ran after them, yelling for all to hear: "You had better be back during the week for confession, because you are sinners!"

Should we not thank God for this sea-change in orientation?

NOSTRA AETATE has not wiped out Catholic anti-Semitism. You have to walk through life with blinders on not to encounter Catholics who were brought up on liberal doses of anti-Semitism at home - and had it drummed out of them by priests and nuns who were faithful to the new teachings of Nostra Aetate.

Conversion of Jews, however, is no longer the priority it once was. If the covenant with the Jews has never been broken, then somehow they do not need the embrace of the mother Church quite as much as other people do. Long educated to believe that there was no other portal to Heaven, it is upsetting to many Catholics to learn that there may be a Jewish back door.

Isa:50:1: Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

Jer:3:8: And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also.

The theology of all this, moreover, is a work in progress. Some of the solutions proposed do not sound like much of an improvement, but even they, practically speaking, call for treating Jews very differently. Many Catholics don't mind the contradiction, or the struggle to find a way out of it.

While hopeful that more Jews will understand how positive a development Nostra Aetate was, I cannot completely fault those who have responded with indifference or outright suspicion.
Jews are very much in the position of a battered wife hearing her husband claim that he has turned over a new leaf. Violent husbands sometimes do change, albeit not very often. Their long-suffering spouses need to remain cautious and vigilant for their own protection.

The Jewish community, bruised and bloodied in two millennia of interaction with Rome, cannot be faulted for wanting to see hard evidence of change before it can trust the voices of reconciliation.

Yet we cannot, I think, be deaf to them either. What ought we do?

We ought to take tentative steps toward changing some of our attitudes. The Orthodox community is univocally opposed to the old kind of ecumenical dialogue, aimed at an interpenetration of religious ideas. We too, however, should recognize that some kinds of discussion have nothing to do with impressing religious teachings.

There are areas in which our moral and ethical values coincide, especially in the Kulturkampf against the hedonistic and material alternatives of our shared host culture. It is not only observant Jews who feel like an embattled minority - committed Catholics, too, despite their greater numbers, feel marginalized by the image-makers of popular culture.

Particularly in America, we ought to wage a common battle to persuade our fellow citizens to hold on to our shared treasured notions (even as we disagree about important parts of their meaning) about the specialness of human life, and about the importance of God in human affairs.

Minimally, we ought to remember that those who are trying to find new interpretations of old texts are, well, people. They are priests and laypeople, but they are human beings with the usual complement of feelings and sensitivities. They would like to know that Jews are taking notice of their work, and that it is appreciated. Those of us who encounter such people should find ways to show it.
