RIVAL PHILOSOPHIES OF NOAHIDISM
TWO APPROACHES
Whilst the obligation upon the Jewish people to influence the nations to keep the Noahide laws, as mentioned above, applies at all times, it has until recently not been vigorously practised. A reason for this, sanctioned by Torah itself, is the fact of danger. This was due to the vulnerability of the Jewish people in the context of a general society antagonistic to them.
Yet at this critical juncture in history, when it appears that Jews can proceed without fear to teach and influence the non-Jewish world quite explicitly with regard to the Noahide laws, and as Noahide movements emerge, there opens up an issue of fundamental philosophical difference of approach to Noahidism.
Two fundamental approaches emerge. One of these is the classical orthodox Jewish tradition, which can be documented in Maimonides, the Maharal of Prague and the writings of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. This is at the foundation of first section of this essay. The other stems from relatively recent writings associated with the names Benamozegh and Palliere.
In 1955 there was published for the first time an English translation of a work written in French by a Moroccan-born Jew, Elijah Benamozegh, who for 50 years held a Rabbinical post in Livorno in Italy. His life spanned the years 1823-1900 and was marked by prolific writing and a thoroughgoing acquaintance with the secular learning of his time. His name and quotations from his work appear in a number of recent orthodox works in English on the Noahide Laws, but these come through and are quoted in the book, "The Unknown Sanctuary", of a French gentile, Aime Palliere, whom Banamozegh inspired to a life of Noahidism.
A reprint of Palliere's book, with a new introduction by David Novak, appeared in 1985. Palliere is presented by some as the gentile "high priest" of Noahidism. His work shows a fundamental consonance with that of Benamozegh, whose thought he faithfully propagated.
It would appear that until the recent appearance of a new English translation, "Israel and Humanity",

Benamozegh's work itself has been little known (notwithstanding the Hebrew edition and translation which appeared in 1967). In emerging contemporary writings on Noahidism positions are being taken up which correspond with each of these positions. Some, residing within the orthodox tradition, quote the writings of Benamozegh and Palliere sympathetically, but it would appear that they have not made a systematic analysis of these works, which in fact are at variance with their positions.
The purpose of the following is bring out the essential difference between these two philosophies of Noahidism.
THE DISTINCT TASKS OF JEW AND NON-JEW
The crux of the issue is the notion - which has always agitated Jewish apologists - of the difference and chosenness of the Jewish people, in relation to the other nations of the world. For traditional Jewish thought, the chosenness of the Jewish people relates to the idea, noted above, that they acquired a level of spiritual perception and connectedness, during the exodus from Egypt and the revelation at Sinai, associated transcendent G-dliness.
Chosen for Salvation, Rejected the Chooser the Lamb of God the Creator, chose instead the "Robber" and cried out "Let his blood be on our hands and our children". Now seek to choose one who will come in his own name, who they say is about to be "REVEALED" who the Word of God said would be "REVEALED that Son of Perdition Just after this global apostasy to their satanic Noahide Laws of Evil, 2 Thes. 2
This relates to G-dliness which infinitely surpasses the creation and in fact engenders it ex nihilo into being. It is to be contrasted with the perception and level of immanent G-dliness, a "contracted G-dliness" which resides and manifests itself within the creation. In the words of the Maharal of Prague, the Jewish people acquired an attachment to transcendent G-dliness, making their existence nivdal ("separate") from the ordinary realm of nature, and characterized by a miraculous Providence .

The intellectual soul of the gentile, on the other hand, is concentrated in the capacity to relate to the way in which Divine contracts and enclothes itself within creation, to immanent G-dliness. This spiritual difference between Jew and non-Jew is reflected, according to the Maharal, in the differences between the commandments applying to the Jewish people on the one hand, and to the gentile nations, on the other.
Making them twice the children of hell
The Jewish people have the multiplicity of six hundred and thirteen commandments reflecting their intense connectedness to a level of G-dliness transcending the creation. The gentile nations on the other hand, whose relationship to the Creator is more via the creation itself, have the less complex bond of seven general commandments, even though these are widely ramified.

The "chosenness" of the Jewish people is therefore not connected with "domination" or "exclusiveness". It signifies the bonding with a level of transcendent G-dliness expressed through the performance of six hundred and thirteen commandments. Jew and non-Jew have a partnership to fulfil in which each has a crucially complementary service to perform.

The Sages of the Talmud themselves spoke of the greatness of a non-Jew occupied in the study of the Torah in relation to the Noahide laws in terms comparable to that of the service of the High Priest of the Jewish people. The complementary roles of Jew and non-Jew are both integral to the notion of redemption.

Two of Maimondies thirteen principles of the faith - the Messiah and Resurrection - relate to a notion of redemption in traditional Jewish thought. As this is formulated in Chassidic thought, it means the transcendent - boundless, supernatural - Divinity will be drawn into, and manifested within, the "ordinary" frameworks of life: that the miraculous will be inserted in the "Mundane", and that this will itself constitute the greatest revelation of the Creator and reward for humankind.

In this scheme, as explained in Chassidic thought, the function of the seven Noahide laws is to fashion an orderly and civilized world - in which immanent G-dliness is manifested - as the fundament upon which the drawing of the higher transcendent revelation into this world by the service of the Jewish people, can take place.

Benamozegh's thought seems to repress the distinction between the transcendent and immanent spiritual orientations of Jew and non-Jew. It is true that he distinguishes between what he calls the more mystical and suprarational character of the "Mosaic" law and the more "rational" and worldly religions, but in the end he sees these as two sides of the one revelation and the one teaching.
The Jewish preoccupation is with the pure monotheistic idea, the unity of the Divine; the nations have focussed on aspects of the Divine, which they have transfigured into divinities in their own right.

Judaism becomes therefore the sum of the individual deities, which are the "partial" truths of nations. This he seeks to support with what he regards as an "emanationist" doctrine of the Kabbalah, whereby the transcendent Creator actually resides in the creation, which then become so many facets of His unity.

Benamozegh is arguably much closer here to the neo-Platonist philosopher Plotinus and to non-Jewish mystical philosophers such as Bruno and Ficino than to Jewish Kabbalah. For one of the basic notions of Kabbalah is that the "world', the creation as it is, is a "damaged" world in which Divinity has been driven into concealment rather than being revealed within it. Benamozegh's approving quotations from Spinoza only strengthen the impression that the Creator of the Jewish people is not truly transcendent, but only an immanent extrapolation from the creation itself.
Both Demonic Doctrine which make the Word of God of None Effect
Benamozegh presents Judaism as relating essentially to the same plane as Noahidism. He sees the particular laws ("Mosaism") of the Jewish people as intended simply to suit them for the role of trustee in the implementation of a universal religion of mankind ("Noahidism"). That is, instead of introducing transcendent G-dliness into creation, their task is simply to assist the Noahide manifestation of G-dliness immanent within creation, propagated through the seven Noahide laws.

Benamozegh's removal of the transcendent/immanent distinction between the spiritual service of Jew and non-Jew or of Judaism and Noahidism produces a different vision of the redemptive goal of creation, set out in Torah. In Benamozegh's view, humankind - Jew and non-Jew as a collective agency - is seen simply to work gradually on its own perfection, but without any fundamental, qualitative transformation of creation of the kind suggested in traditional Jewish sources.

If, as Benamozegh wishes to argue, Israel and humanity are basically two perspectives of the one entity, then the gods of the nations are a very disturbing aggregate reflection of the one Creator of the Jewish people. Indeed Benamozegh seems to express equivocations about this at the end of his book, where he laments the persecutions of the Jewish people by the adherents of the world religions, seeing only "now" an emerging tolerance and acknowledgment of Jewish monotheism on the part of the nations.

Palliere, rather than presenting the nations as setting the stage for the introduction of transcendent G-dliness into the creation by the Jewish people, similarly inverts this relationship. He makes the Jewish people ministers of a universal Noahidism. He quotes Benamozegh, that "not only has the Noachide law never ceased to be in force, but even Israel, with its special code, Mosaism, was created for it, to safeguard it, to teach it, to spread it".

The entire significance of the Mosaic law, is not to effect the transformation of creation and humanity, and to provide a conduit for the introduction of transcendent G-dliness into the creation, but simply a regime to make the Jewish people fit to act as a priesthood for Noahidism.

THE PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCES
The basic difference in the philosophical understanding of the relationship between the Jewish people and the gentile nations has practical consequences for another issue in Noahidism, the authority of the Oral Law, Torah sheb'al peh. Maimonidies in the Introduction to his great Code lays down the principle that the giving of the Torah was not only as a written text but also with a body of interpretation. It is impossible, according to this principle, for the meaning of the scriptural verses (in this case, the verses in Genesis from which the Noahide laws are learnt) to be comprehended without the tradition of commentary passed from generation to generation embodied in the Rabbinic tradition.

Its transmission is characterized by an attitude of profound bitul - humility, deference and receptivity - towards the body of detailed commentary of previous generations, going all the way back to the interpretation - the Oral Law - given to Moses at Sinai. The ability to derive new rulings and applications of the law is something for which the Jewish people, and within it the Rabbinic tradition, are uniquely fitted.
Similarly, the source of the authority of the Noahide laws is not an "independent " tradition which goes back to Adam and Noah, but the giving, at Sin------ai, of the Torah, which makes known that the gentile nations had previously been instructed in these laws and gives these laws a new authority. In the words of Maimonides, the righteous gentile is one who has taken upon him or herself to perform the Noahide laws specifically because the Holy One blessed be He commanded concerning them in Torah and made known through our teacher Moses that the sons of Noah have previously been commanded in them.
The giving of the Torah at Sin.......ai to Moses, both in its written and oral forms, is thus the source of authority and interpretation of the Noahide law. Contrary to this is the view that the Noahide law is essentially independent of Sinai. Palliere puts this plainly. Noahidism is "the religion of the patriarchs for the Gentiles", "the religion preserved by Israel to be transmitted to the Gentiles".

This is a view which separates the Noahide laws from the transcendent beacon and guide of the Jewish people and makes them into an autonomous tradition which antedates Sinai. The Oral law, the Rabbinic tradition, which stems from Sinai, for this philosophy of Noahidism becomes irrelevant.
From the traditional point of view, the Oral Law, maintained within the Rabbinic tradition, is of course the living fount of adjudication and application of the Noahide laws is vitally important for the Noahide Laws. Without it one cannot know the meaning and details of the Noahide laws cryptically set fourth in Scripture. Moreover, just as the Oral Law sets for the teaching of Torah in matters of halachah, so too does it provide us with the philosophical outlook of Torah and with the instruments of biblical exegesis and historical interpretation, which no independent "bible study" can supplant.

Benamozegh seeks to adduce arguments from his own interpretations of biblical verses, interpretations which are sometimes at variance with (or indifference to) those of great figures of the oral Tradition. When, similarly, he makes historical judgments which are similarly at variance with the Oral Law, this is fraught with more obvious consequences. Thus, he makes a parenthetical statement in his Conclusion, that Jesus "was a good Jew who did not dream of founding a rival church".

Making a "pristine, restored" Christianity into the carrier of Noahidism rather than the Noahide laws, together with their detail, set out in the Oral law, is profoundly hazardous.

Palliere similarly validated Christianity in its supposedly "pristine" form, which he sees as excluding the doctrine of incarnation, as the legitimate extension of Judaism to the nations. In his words, "one cannot find any lack of continuity between the Hebrew Bible and the Gospel". Jesus becomes for him the prototype of a Noahide: "I said to myself that I was no longer a Christian in the proper sense of the word, but a Jew, probably as Jesus had been a Jew".

This view of Jesus is wholly rejected by Maimonides, based on the traditions of the Talmud, in a section of his Code, which has only recently been restored from the censor.

week, John Kerry addressed (via conference call) over three hundred Jewish
community leaders at the B'nai
B'rith International Conference in Hollywood,
Florida. As John Kerry has done throughout this campaign, he reaffirmed
his unqualified support for Israel. He spoke also about rebuilding
alliances, making America and Israel safer and ending the "sweetheart
relationship between this administration and Saudi Arabia."
Following are excerpts from his speech.
On a Longstanding and Personal Commitment to Israel:
"My deep commitment is to continue to do as I've done for the 35 years
since I've been in public life and 20 years in the Senate -- to continue to
fight for Israel, for a safe, secure, Democratic Jewish state of Israel. And
that commitment is absolutely unwavering. And it comes from personal
experience as well as from policy judgments that I've made. My first trip
to Israel was in 1986 when I got to go over there with
ADL for a week's journey. We took a week and traveled all through
the country. I visited Yad Vashem and saw the great testament to the
Holocaust, which I've now learned, I didn't know until
this last year that I have family and lost family members in the Holocaust and I
have Jewish roots that I was not aware of that I've become aware of.
So that has greater and deeper meaning."
On Israel and the War on Terror:
"I believe that I can run a far more effective war on terror and do better
by Israel. And I'll tell you why.
Because Georgie is not a good Danaaite, and I am a jew
Because I think the sweetheart relationship between this
administration and Saudi Arabia and the lack of willingness of this
administration to hold Arab countries accountable for their newspaper articles,
for their anti-Semitism, for

made the world safer and has not protected Israel. And today, in fact,
Hamas has more currency in the streets of the West Bank than the Palestinian
Authority, for a lot of different reasons, but the focus of the last year should
have been in developing that Authority, on staying engaged, on being involved in
a way that provided, hopefully, a partner for Israel and didn't
require Israel to take the unilateral steps it's taking. I support
those unilateral steps. I support the withdrawal from Gaza. I
support the statement with respect to the right of return, which is, in effect,
a recognition of what was negotiated in Taba anyway."

WHY JEWS SHOULD SUPPORT JOHN KERRY
The presidential campaign has barely begun, but absurd charges and snide
insinuations about why John Kerry should be considered "bad for
Israel" and "bad for the Jews" have already been circulated
through Jewish newspapers and e-mail campaigns.
Don't get taken in! Know what's going on. Be able to respond to well-meaning but
misinformed articles and sermons, to the pontifications of self-designated
"Jewish leaders" who speak for no one but themselves, and to the
deceptive e-mails you'll receive and be asked to forward to your friends.
As an instructor of International Relations at a major public university and of
courses on a wide variety of topics for Jewish adult education programs, I come
into constant contact with information that Americans

W. Bush, American Jews -- prominent in swing states in what could be a close
election -- can expect plenty of attention.
"Anything that moves a few hundred or a few thousand voters one way or another in any state can cause a seismic shift," said John Zogby, a pollster who says the closeness of this election is leading opinion-gatherers to focus more than ever on small groups like Jews.

"There's probably going to be about 10 real battleground states and in a number of those places there's a large Jewish community," said Matt Brooks, the executive director of the Republican Jewish Coalition, making note of Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, and Missouri.
The Republic Jewish Coalition has held a number of events in Florida recently to bolster support.
Marc Racicot, the former Montana governor who chairs the Bush-Cheney re-election campaign, attended some Republican Jewish events in the state over the weekend. Racicot said he was optimistic that Bush would do better than the 19 percent he earned from Jews in 2000, because of the president's strong pro-Israel record.

"Things have not looked as good for Democrats in the Jewish community for a number of years," said Ira Forman, the executive director of the National Jewish Democratic Council.
Kerry's strength among Jews was reflected in exit polls on Tuesday, where he polled better among Jews than among non-Jews in four out of five states with reliable Jewish exit poll data.
Forman said his party would emphasize what all pro-Israel activists agree is Kerry's exemplary voting record in 19 years in the Senate.

Forman suggested that the Democrats' strategy would be first to say that Bush and Kerry were equals on Israel, "and then we pivot to all the major domestic issues."

"On issues specific to Israel, we're talking about a win-win situation," said Rosenthal, one of 40 Jewish organizational leaders who met with Kerry over the weekend in New York. "Jews will be looking at protection of privacy, at civil liberties protections, at health care, women's rights."

Those were all issues Kerry stressed in his victory speech Tuesday night, when he left foreign policy and the Iraq war for brief mentions at the end.
Forman said the party also would emphasize Bush's backing for the amendment banning gay marriage.
"Every time they play to their conservative base -- and they'll have to play a lot this year -- they totally alienate the Jewish community," Forman said.
Republicans agreed that Kerry was strong on Israel but suggested that Bush was stronger and that Kerry could be vulnerable on national security, where Bush has aggressively advocated tougher measures in the USA Patriot Act.

Brooks, the Republican Jewish leader, suggested that Bush's commitment to Israel's safety and security would trump domestic considerations for many Jews.
Frank Luntz, a Republican pollster who will publish his own survey of American Jews next week, said this election season promises to be an interesting one.
"For the first time in my lifetime, a significant segment of the Jewish vote is up for grabs," he said in an interview. "The Jewish community is the most interested in national security of any voter sub-group, and that plays to Bush's advantage."
"The Jewish community is still liberal on social issues and that plays to Kerry's advantage," he said.

In a survey of American Jews published in January by the American Jewish Committee, 51 percent identified themselves as Democrats, 31 percent as Independent and 16 percent as Republican.

The Maharal was one of the
most seminal thinkers in the post-medieval period. he developed an entirely new
approach to the aggada of the Talmud and it is likely that no previous author
devoted so much space to the interpretation of the non-halachic thought of the
rabbis of the Talmud.
He was held in great esteem by his contemporaries and has had a profound impact
on all streams of Judaism. Rabbi Kook stated that the "Maharal was the
father of the approach of the Gaon of Vilna on the one hand, and of the father
of Chasidut, on the other hand." He has been described as a Kabbalist who
wrote in philosophic garb.
The Maharal castigated the educational methods of his day where boys were taught
at a very young age and insisted that children must be taught in accordance with
their intellectual maturity. Thus, Talmud and certainly not tosafot should be
introduced only when the child is developmentally capable of fully comprehending
what is being taught. He recommended that the system proposed in Pirkei
Avot be followed.
One of his leading disciples was R. Yom Tov Heller, author of the classic
mishnaic commentary, Tosafot Yom Tov, who, in his introduction informs us that
the Maharal greatly encouraged group study of the Mishna. Maharal may have been
the founder of Chevra Mishnayot.
The Maharal was one of the staunch defenders of the tradition and of the
undisputed wisdom of Chazal
and wrote a critique of Azriah de'Rossi's Me'or Einayim. At the same time, he
was fully conversant with the scientific knowledge of his time as well as
friendly with some of the contemporary eminent scientists. His disciple, David
Ganz, worked in the observatory of Tycho Brahe, the distinguished astronomer.
His works include a major commentary on Rashi's
commentary on the Pentateuch, volumes on Passover in all its facets, on exile
and redemption, on Torah, on Pirkei Avot, on Drashot Chazal and on development
of character.
The Maharal was esteemed by Jew and non-Jew alike and was summoned for an
interview with Emperor Rudolph II, though the subject of the interview is still
the subject of speculation.
At one time it seemed that the Maharal was best known for a fictitious creation,
that of a Golem. However, with the passage of time it seems that his true
enduring creations have become an integral part of the intellectual and
spiritual heritage of the Jewish people.

Chabad Chassidim in each of the seven generations have always considered their Rebbe to be the "Moshiach of the generation," the greatest Tzaddik (saintly individual) of the era, who, if the generation will be worthy, will become the actual Moshiach.
However, Chassidim would not proclaim this openly without a firm basis in the words of the Rebbe himself. In fact, the Rebbe often stated that the Moshiach is a human being of flesh and blood, as implied in RaMBaM's ruling that "A king will arise from the House of David, studying the Torah and practising the Mitzvos . . . "
The Rebbe quoted several times from the Bartenura commentary on Ruth that "In every generation is born someone descended from Yehuda who is worthy to be Moshiach for the Jewish people if the generation will be deserving."

Kerry and Edwards Will Use Campaign to Push Domestic Spy Agency
The selection of Sen. John Edwards as John Kerry’s running mate has raised concerns inside the FBI and among civil-liberties groups that the North Carolina senator will use the campaign to promote his controversial proposal to create a new domestic spy agency.
For the past 18 months, Edwards has been perhaps the Senate’s foremost champion of a much-debated proposal to strip the bureau of its intelligence-gathering functions and turn them over to a new domestic spy agency patterned after Britain’s M.I.5.
Edwards’s promotion of the idea has created friction between him and FBI Director Robert Mueller who, along with other bureau officials, has warned that such a move would spark renewed turmoil within the U.S. intelligence community that would hinder the war on terrorism. It also has stirred the fears of civil-liberties groups, who believe such an agency would inevitably end up spying on political dissidents and religious groups.
But Edwards has refused to back down—and there are signs that Kerry himself may be warm to the idea. “He thinks it’s still the way to go,” said Mike Briggs, Edwards’s Senate press secretary on Wednesday when asked about the M.I.5 proposal.
Indeed, in an op-ed article for a North Carolina newspaper as recently as two months ago, Edwards wrote “that the FBI has failed as an intelligence agency.” He also dismissed Mueller’s own efforts to reform the FBI to make it more attentive to intelligence gathering, as opposed to strict law enforcement.
Despite receiving numerous briefings from the FBI director on the subject, which Edwards would have received as a member of both the Senate Judiciary Committee and Senate Intelligence Committee, “I have heard nothing that gives me confidence that the proposed changes will enable the FBI to more effectively collect intelligence on the plans and intentions of terrorists,” Edwards wrote in a May 2, 2004, op-ed in the Raleigh News and Observer.
Although Kerry himself has talked more vaguely about reforming intelligence in his major campaign speeches, a little noticed “Defending the American Homeland” plan on his campaign Web site seems to reach a similar conclusion as Edwards on the subject.
“Many of the examinations of 9/11 have raised serious questions about whether the FBI is the right agency to conduct domestic intelligence collection and analysis,” the Kerry plan states in a section entitled “Reforming Domestic Intelligence.” “America needs an independent intelligence capability that focuses explicitly on domestic intelligence.” A senior Kerry campaign official said that language—taken from a fact sheet handed out after a Kerry speech to a firefighters' group in March 2003—was not intended to specifically endorse an M.I.5 over a beefed up intelligence function within the FBI. "We've been back and forth on this issue—and it's still not determined," the campaign official said.
The idea of creating a new domestic spy agency first received wide currency in the wake of the September 11 attacks and has been debated intensely by the 9/11 commission. The panel is due to make its recommendations for intelligence reform later this month. But sources inside the commission say the prospect of such a major overhaul—along with its profound implications for civil liberties—has caused many panel members to shrink from such a step and favor less sweeping recommendations to improve intelligence gathering inside the country.
Indeed, top FBI officials had until this week concluded that Mueller’s own reform efforts—including a recent proposal to create a new “intelligence directorate” within the FBI—had pretty much put the matter to rest. “We’re not too worried about that,” said one senior bureau official about the M.I.5 proposal.
Now, however, the prospect that the Kerry-Edwards ticket might push the M.I.5 idea could swiftly change the political dynamic. Since late 2002, in speeches and on the Senate floor, Edwards has argued that the failures of the FBI to pick up the trail of the 9/11 hijackers graphically shows the bureau’s fundamental deficiencies in intelligence gathering. As a law-enforcement agency, the FBI is by culture and practice focused on arresting, prosecuting and convicting criminals—not collecting fragmentary bits of intelligence about potential terrorists and then analyzing the information to make sense of it, he has said.
“Asking a law-enforcement agency to manage intelligence is like trying to jam a square peg into a round hole,” Edwards said in a December 2002 speech to the Brookings Institution. “The FBI … builds cases rather than connecting dots, and it keeps information secret rather than getting it to those who can use it stop the terrorists.”
Edwards’s repeated pounding away on the subject early last year annoyed top FBI officials. Some privately expressed irritation, suggesting that the politically ambitious first-term senator had seized on the idea as a vehicle for his presidential campaign. At one point, Mueller appealed to Edwards to hold off introducing legislation on the subject until the FBI director could brief him about what he was doing to correct the problem. Edwards went ahead and introduced his bill anyway in February 2003—and then took Mueller up on his offer, a sequence that did not go down well among some of Mueller’s deputies.
Mueller’s own reform efforts have revolved around making terrorism the FBI’s top priority, beefing up the bureau’s own intelligence and analytic functions and bringing in fresh managers with backgrounds in the intelligence community. But bureau officials argue that creating an entirely new agency dedicated solely to spying inside the United States would only create new bureaucratic rivalries—especially because the bureau law-enforcement agents would still be needed to develop evidence for criminal prosecutions. “You can’t separate criminal prosecutions, terrorism and foreign intelligence,” said one top FBI manager.
Civil-liberties groups have other concerns about the Edwards plan. For decades, FBI agents who seek to develop evidence about potential domestic threats have operated under tight Justice Department guidelines; those guidelines require there be grounds to believe targets are engaged in criminal acts. A new domestic spy agency would not be so encumbered, the critics say. In an effort to insulate himself from such criticism, Edwards had proposed steps to curb potential excesses by a domestic spying agency, such as requiring approval from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for infiltrating domestic political or religious groups. But some civil-liberties advocates say such steps would be insufficient—the FISA court has historically acted as a rubber stamp, critics say—and that a domestic-intelligence agency such as Edwards has advocated would inevitably be tempted to spy on legitimate dissenters.
“Senator Edwards’s proposal ignored the serious civil-liberties problems it would have caused,” said Kate Martin of the Center for National Security Studies. She said she hopes the Democratic candidates will await the full report of the 9/11 commission before pushing the idea any further and “not make this a political issue.”
Ironically, others say Edwards’s selection could be the political kiss of death for the M.I.5 plan—at least within the Bush administration. Until recently, there had been strong indications that some White House officials, especially national-security adviser Condoleezza Rice, were leaning toward adopting the idea once the 9/11 commission comes out with their report. But now, with Edwards so strongly identified with it, it would be highly unlikely the Bush administration would be tempted to pursue such a course—if only because administration officials would then be accused of stealing from one of their rivals, said Jim Dempsey, the executive director of the Center for Democracy and Technology. “They’ll never support it now,” said Dempsey.

This is going to be the most vicious Presidential election campaign on record and potentially the most dangerous. Bush’s actions have politically polarized the American electorate and Moore’s Fahrenheit 9/11 documentary has made a bad situation for Bush far worse. The danger lies in what probable actions Bush might take to swing the election that now is moving strongly against him. He is appealing to far right Christian groups, something that is sure to outrage more centrists and moderate religious groups. When these groups get the bit in their teeth, they become very vocal and often very vicious. More important, however, is the distinct possibility that Bush will start another military adventure, just before the election. Rumor at high levels has it that he will declare a state of emergency, based on faked reports, that North Korea and/or Iran are about to launch nuclear strikes against the American homeland and that he has ordered counterstrikes to defend this country.
There are a significant number of Americans who would go for this. Hell, there are many Americans that believe Hussein controlled Al Quaeda, that the WTC was blown up by CIA missiles or plasmoid clouds or that Bush has helped the American economy instead of absolutely destroying its future growth.
Unfortunately, both of these countries do have the Bomb and both are capable of retaliation or, worse, preemptive strikes against our troops in South Korea, Iraq or even Japan. Between Israel beating the drums for a US attack on Iran and Syria and Bush’s toppling pole numbers, most of us are now seriously afraid of some Godawful adventure on the part of the ‘Mission Accomplished’ lad.

Warns of 'Large-Scale Attack' Plan
WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Thursday that
there is "credible" information indicating that al-Qaida is moving
ahead with plans for a "large-scale attack" in the U.S. aimed at
disrupting the November elections.
Ridge said it's clear that al-Qaida has the capability to carry out such an
attack. He said U.S. authorities don't have information on the time, place or
method, but that they're "actively working" to gain that knoweldge.
He also said al-Qaida is working under the "mistaken belief" that
such an attack would affect the nation's resolve.
Ridge said there was no specific information indicating that al-Qaida is
targeting either the Democratic National Convention later this month in Boston
or the Republican National Convention a month later in New York.
The United States is tightening security in the face of a steady stream of
intelligence indicating al-Qaida may seek to mount an attack aimed at disrupting
elections, the White House said earlier.
The Department of Homeland Security is addressing the threat and has efforts
under way to "ramp up security," White House press secretary Scott
McClellan said Thursday.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist told reporters that Americans should not
expect a major announcement on homeland security any time soon, indicating that
the nation's threat level could remain at its "elevated" level.
"There's, obviously, no reason for panic, or paralysis," Frist said
after a briefing for senators on intelligence matters. "The country is at
some increased risk between now and the time of the presidential election. It's
important for people to be aware of that."
"What is clear is that law enforcement has generally been notified. ...
There are enhanced activities on behalf of law enforcement around the country to
engage in deterrence and prevention," he said.
In April, a working group made up of representatives from agencies that touch
on law enforcement, homeland security and intelligence was established to deal
with a series of events through the election that may be attractive targets for
terrorists, including the presidential nominating conventions.
Senior administration officials and counterterrorism experts view the coming
months as a time to increase vigilance out of concern that Islamic militants may
try to replicate the political success they had in Spain with coordinated
pre-election train bombings.
Nearly 200 died in the March attack, and the prime minister's ruling Popular
Party lost to a rival who promised a pullout of Spanish troops from Iraq.
Elaborate plans are already in the works to protect the Republican and
Democratic party conventions in New York and Boston, which have been classified
as National Security Special Events. With the designation - a concept that
evolved from the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta - comes federal funds,
increased preparations and heightened security.

When asked if the Johns are acting out a cynical focus group series of poses --
perhaps to show warmth to the chilly Bush/Cheney -- a Kerry spokesperson

The tall, liberal Democrat, U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, is considered a "publicity hound" by his Senate colleagues. However, having a penchant for getting one's face frequently on television does not a hero make. Although a junior Senator at the time, Kerry was "surprisingly" given the delicate job by his Senate colleagues in 1989 of looking into a slew of allegations that an international bank owned by the Illuminati named "BCCI" was heavily involved in racketeering, money laundering, bribery, terrorism, and a variety of other crimes.
When his Skull & Bones elders and their pals in the Senate, including Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, told him to quietly put the lid on these unsavory allegations and to meekly absolve the bank of wrongdoing, Kerry, always quick to please, complied without a murmur.
Two years later, the lid blew off the BCCI case when the bank went under, filed bankruptcy, and left the taxpayers and unwitting investors holding the bag for some $500 million in losses.
The big boys of the Brotherhood, of course, had already cleared out their accounts, having received a few years advance notice from their front man and good buddy, Senator John Kerry. Then, in 1991, in a weird and surrealistic public relations ploy, the bonesman from New England suddenly announced that his Senate committee would reopen its hearings on the failed bank. Sorry, John, but the horses were already out of the barn. Indeed, shortly afterward, Kerry quietly closed shop on his committee's renewed "investigation."
The Tragic Case of the Missing POW/MIAs
The BCCI scandal is not the only shady deal in which John Kerry's tap dancing and coverup talents have come in handy for the Skull & Bones and other Illuminati hierarchy. When U.S. Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) and a few others in Congress came out with revelations that some POW/MIAs may still be alive somewhere in Vietnam, the Bush, Sr. administration, embarrassed over accusations that its officials had sat on their hands and done little to resolve the POW/MIA issue, quickly called on fellow bonesman John Kerry. To the rescue he came, "boldly" announcing in front of the news cameras that his committee would launch a "full-scale investigation."
Kerry's assigned role, obviously, was to take the heat off the President and the Pentagon and to help the Illuminist Brotherhood in the process. Seems that the Brotherhood had a fond desire and longing to open up the oil and mineral-rich lands of Communist Vietnam and its neighbors, Cambodia and Laos, to commercial exploitation.
Senator Kerry and his committee quickly went into operation, actively debunking confirmed POW sightings in Vietnam and downplaying the POW/MIA issue. Then came the clincher: In late 1991 Senator Kerry personally flew to Vietnam on a "fact-finding" tour.
The upshot: the photogenic Kerry assured us (on television naturally!) that there were no more POWs being held and that there were no reliable accounts as to what had happened to the missing POW/MIAs. This, even though a Soviet KGB General had openly admitted that during the Vietnam war years, the KGB had callously shipped many of the American servicemen in bondage in Vietnam off to Soviet KGB prisons to be interrogated about their high-tech intelligence and military know-how.
At his news conference, once he had shunted aside the issue of missing POW/MIAs, John Kerry went right to the heart of this real purpose in volunteering his committee's time and energy to "resolve" the Vietnam POW/MIA issue. The bonesman Senator recommended that trade links, then prohibited, be immediately opened between the U.S. and Vietnam and that the U.S. diplomatically recognize the communist Saigon government as legitimate. That recognition, and acceptance by the U.S. of Vietnam as a trading partner, had been held up pending resolution of the case of the missing POW/MIAs.
Covering Up the Iran Contra Scandal
It was also Senator John Kerry, the Illuminati's Fireman, whose committee conducted hearings on the Iran Contra scandal. Kerry and company handled the matter with kid gloves and it was left to a special prosecutor, Lawrence Walsh, to try to get to the bottom of things and smoke out Oliver North, Caspar Weinberger, John Poindexter, Ronald Reagan, Richard Secord, and a host of other "buddies" involved in perpetrating and/or covering up the bribe paid to the treacherous and bloody Iranian ayatollahs as well as the treacherous Israeli government shenanigans.
John Kerry, unquestionably, has faithfully served the elite in tragically shafting our POWs/MIAs. He has covered up the Illuminati's financial crimes and helped the Israelis to hide their role in the Iran Contra affair. In doing so, he has repeatedly had to sell his soul to these Mafia bosses.

A Moral Reprobate
The morally reprobate nature of Kerry was recently well-documented. Shortly after winning the Primary elections and being named the Democratic Party's de facto nominee for the White House, Kerry flew to Idaho for a weekend of snow skiing at a fancy resort. While skiing he was overheard berating a secret service agent assigned to protect him, calling him a "son of a bitch" simply because the agent accidentally got too close to him on the slopes.
At one of Kerry's campaign rallies, in Tampa, Florida, on March 16, 2004, Senator Kerry confronted a polite demonstrator, a Christian woman holding up a sign opposing abortion. The young woman, Rebecca Porter, had an abortion before she accepted Jesus as Saviour. Her sign read, "My Abortion Hurt Me."
So angry did this statement make Kerry, that the Senator immediately went over to several burly men, campaign aides (thugs?). They furiously went up to Rebecca and yanked the sign out of her hands. Then, they tore it to pieces as she and others looked on.
So much for free speech amongst the elite. Illuminati minions like Kerry do not give a flip whether abortion hurts a young woman like Rebecca Porter. They don't care a bit if millions of American families are hurt and must go hungry because parents can't find a job-because good U.S. jobs are being transferred to Red China, India, Pakistan, and Mexico.

Regarding the genealogy of the Rebbe, I don't know what the author's source is for regarding the first Lubavitcher Rebbe as descendant from Rashi. I have heard that there is good evidence that his link to David is through Rabbi Judah Loew, the Maharal of Prague, who is not known to descend from Rashi -- although I do not think this information is important. As far as verification for Solomonic descent, it should be noted that in the epistle to Yemen mentioned previously, Maimonides writes that Moshiach's pedigree will be proven by his wondrous acts. While this may or may not reflect practical Jewish law, it certainly reflects the position of Maimonides, who the author is certain would require strict genealogical verification. This is another example of the author's overreaching deductive power. The saga of a U.S. senator and presidential contender in search of his roots--and his reaction to the "revelation."

Seven years ago, U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was confronted with a genealogical discovery: her Czech émigré parents were Jewish. They'd hidden their Jewish roots during and after the Second World War. More than a dozen of her Jewish relatives, including three grandparents, an aunt, an uncle and a first cousin, had all perished in the Nazi concentration camps. Albright has been reluctant to comment on the discovery, telling the Washington Post, "I have to look into this myself...it's a very personal matter."
A similar revelation occurred on February 2, 2003, when the Boston Globe reported that Massachusetts senator and Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, thought by many to be a "Boston Brahmin" of Irish-Catholic ancestry, was the grandson of Czech immigrants who also had concealed their Jewish heritage.
The story begins in the hamlet of Horni Benesov on the tenth of May 1873--the day Benedikt and Mathilde Kohn had a son they named Fritz.
Like his father, Fritz became a simple brewer. Yet it was difficult for him to succeed in an area dominated by German-speaking Catholics. Many Jews hid their religious identity, posing as Gentiles. "It was easier to do business as a Christian," says Prague-based genealogist Julius Miller, who specializes in tracing Jewish lineage. "Many Jews just stopped practicing Judaism during this period and had no belief at all."
On March 17, 1902, shortly before his 30th birthday, Fritz took his wife Ida and infant son Erich to a government office in Vienna and changed their family name. Fritz Kohn would henceforth be known as Frederick Kerry.
The Kerry family settled for three years in Austria before embarking on the steamship Konigen Luise in Genoa, Italy on May 4, 1905, bound for America. The two-masted, twin-screw "Barbarosa"-class ship was configured to carry nearly 2,000 passengers in steerage, about 150 in first class, and 140 in second. According to the ship's manifest, the Kerrys traveled in first class with only twenty-nine other passengers--French, American, and Swiss families with decidedly Anglican names like Hale, Walker, and Bridgeman.
Ellis Island records note that upon boarding the ship, Kerry identified his family as Germans from Austria, their former place of residence as Vienna. By the time the ship arrived in New York City on May 18, 1905, Frederick Kerry had left his Jewish heritage behind.
A New Life
The Kerry's settled in Chicago, where Frederick quickly set out to stake his claim in the American dream. On June 21, 1907, he filed his initial citizenship papers with Illinois' Cook County Circuit Court. By 1908, he was listed in a business directory with an office on Dearborn Street in Chicago's famous Loop. In 1910, the year his daughter Mildred was born, he had made it into the Chicago Blue Book, a catalogue of notable city residents. By February 6, 1-911, he had filed his naturalization petition, which was witnessed by the highly respected State Street merchant Henry Lytton and by Frank Case, a business manager at Sears Roebuck. Kerry had assisted in the reorganization of Sears, and by the following year he was promoting himself as a "business counselor" under the title "Frederick A. Kerry & Staff."
But for reasons that remain unclear, Kerry soon left Chicago and settled in Brookline, Massachusetts. There, in 1915, Ida gave birth to their third child, Richard, the future father of Senator John Kerry. Frederick would continue the merchant life, now working in the shoe business and achieving enough success to hire a live-in German domestic worker, who appears on the 1920 census records of the Kerry household.
The census information also offers a glimpse into the lengths to which Frederick Kerry had gone to obscure his Jewish lineage. Both he and his wife listed their native tongues as German--although the first language of Czech Jews of that era who were born near the Polish border would almost certainly have been Yiddish. By this point, however, both Frederick and Ida had been practicing Catholics for nearly twenty years, and by all accounts were regarded as devout in their faith.
Frederick Kerry's American dream ended mysteriously on November 21, 1921 at the age of 48. According to front-page news reports, the now virtually bankrupt husband and father of three walked into the lobby washroom of Boston's posh Copley Plaza Hotel, put a loaded revolver to his head, and pulled the trigger. He left behind $25 in cash, $200 in stocks, and a Cadillac.
The suicide cast a shroud of silence over the family history for more than fifty years. It would come to light again with the first stirrings of a U.S. senator's bid for a possible presidential run in 2004.
A Rising Star
The Kerrys' youngest child, Richard, would also achieve success, but unlike his father, would sustain it. He served as an Army pilot during World War II; married Rosemary Forbes, a descendant of two wealthy Massachusetts families, the Forbes and the Winthrops; and became a U.S. diplomat, holding posts in Oslo, Berlin, and Paris.
Richard and Rosemary's first son, John Forbes Kerry, was born on December 11, 1943. Though he attended exclusive boarding schools in Europe as well as an elite private school in New Hampshire, John later would tell interviewers that somehow he always felt disconnected from his peers, like an outsider. He attended Yale at about the same time as President George W. Bush--both belonged to the elite secret Skull & Bones society--but while Bush lived the fraternity life, Kerry, an admirer of John F. Kennedy, found his niche in politics and became president of the Yale Political Union, a nonpartisan group providing a forum for a wide range of political debate. Upon graduation in 1966, he joined the Navy to fight in Vietnam. Returning to the U.S. in 1969 with a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts, Kerry soon became a vocal critic of the war. Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in April 1971, he asked a question that would make him famous: "How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?"
Five years later, Kerry graduated from Boston College law school and kicked his political career into high gear. He quickly rose through the ranks of state government, becoming lieutenant governor of Massachusetts in 1982 under then Governor Michael Dukakis, and eventually winning a U.S. Senate seat in 1984.
In the late 1980s Kerry learned from a relative that his grandmother Ida had been born Jewish--a surprising revelation, as he had remembered her as a zealous Catholic. But he knew virtually nothing about his paternal grandfather, Frederick.
John Kerry's constituency assumed that, with his father's name and his mother's lineage, the senator was a full-blooded Irish Catholic. Even his hometown newspaper, the Boston Globe, regularly made the mistake, despite Kerry's repeated attempts to set the record straight. During a 1993 interview with TV host John McLaughlin, Kerry addressed the incorrect presumption that his father was Irish by stating that his grandfather was Austrian and that his grandmother had been born Jewish. He added: "We're still trying to find all the details." And try he did. Once, while on a visit to Europe, he stopped off in Vienna and called every Kerry in the phone book. And in 2002, his office contacted the regional Czech archives, which, he would later discover, actually possessed information on Fritz Kohn's birth, but the senator never received a reply--two years earlier the bureau had stopped conducting searches for foreigners.
It was not until the late 1990s, when John's father Richard was suffering from cancer, that he finally disclosed to John that his grandfather had shot himself to death. "[That] turned on a light bulb for John Kerry on why his father was so understandably reticent to talk about it," Kerry spokesman David Wade told the Boston Globe. "[It] help[ed] him understand his father much more and what his father went through."
Richard Kerry died in 2000. He never revealed that his father had been a Jew. Born in the United States and only 5 years old when Frederick died, it is likely that Richard did not know of his grandfather's hidden past.
The Mystery Revealed
In late 2002, as rumors began to circulate that Kerry would seek the Democratic nomination for president, editors at the Boston Globe began soliciting reporters for in-depth articles on Kerry's life. Journalist Michael Kranish, a veteran Washington correspondent who had spent four years piecing together his own Jewish family history, volunteered for the assignment.
Knowing that Jews had sometimes altered their names and identities--his own family's name had been changed at Ellis Island--and that unless he hired an overseas collaborator to check European records, it would be months before he'd be able to complete an accurate search, Kranish turned to prominent genealogist Felix Gundacker of the Institute for Historical Family Research in Vienna. Gundacker had developed a specialty in tracing the genealogies of Jews in Austria and in parts of what is now the Czech Republic. Within two weeks, Gundacker discovered the original document in Vienna that recorded Fritz Kohn's name change to Frederick Kerry. Ironically, had Kohn's name been changed at Ellis Island, it might have been impossible to uncover the original name. But because Kohn made the change while still in Austria, probably to conceal his background before coming to America, his origins could now be traced.
Gundacker's next step was to find Kohn's birth records. That search took him to the state archives in the Czech city of Opava, halfway between Krakow, Poland and Prague. There he met archivist Jiri Stibor, a traditionalist who refused to use a computer, preferring to search by hand through the millions of musty files collected in the cavernous rooms of a former palace.
Stibor told Gundacker that on June 20, 2002 he had received an unusual inquiry--a letter in English from a certain "Samuel C" which carried the seal of a high-ranking Washington, D.C. official. The mysterious letter noted that John Kerry was a candidate for president (though the senator had yet to publicly announce his intention to run) and inquired about a man named "Fritz Cohn." Stibor knew he couldn't be of assistance; the archives had stopped processing foreign requests several years earlier. In any case, the war and local antisemitism had left little evidence of a former Jewish presence in the region. "The Germans didn't want any trace of the Jews left," Stibor says, "even after so many of them were taken away. So many of the records were simply destroyed."
Keeping in mind the earlier request, and now proceeding on the assumption that Frederick Kerry had been born Jewish, Gundacker and Stibor began scouring the archives. "The Catholics of the time weren't interested in keeping good records [of the Jews]," Stibor says. "If there were Jews in the town, they would be the last entries, at the end of the book." Adds Gundacker: "If there was no [official] Jewish community, parish priests and other Catholics had to add birth records to the central record books. They mostly added those records to the end of the books, not as part of the regular records." Finally, after hours of pulling volume after volume off the archive shelves, they came upon a handwritten entry in the last pages of a yellowed book. "In the year 1873, on May 10th, was born Fritz Kohn, a legal son of Benedikt Kohn, master brewer in Bennisch (the old German name for Horni Benesov), House 224, and his wife, Mathilde, daughter of Jakob Frankel, royal dealer in Oberlogau in Prussia."
This one sentence had put the last piece of the puzzle into place, solving an 80-year-old mystery. Gundacker phoned Globe reporter Kranish and told him he was "1,000 percent sure" that Senator John Kerry's grandfather had been born a Jew.
A short time later, Kranish personally presented the evidence to Kerry in the senator's Washington office. He let Kerry review the documents: ship manifests, Ellis Island records, newspaper clippings, and additional materials obtained through genealogists, Kranish himself, and the Globe's library staff.
"This is amazing...fascinating to me," Kerry told the reporter. "This is incredible stuff. I think it is more than interesting; it is a revelation....It has a big emotional impact, because it obviously raises questions: I want to know what happened, why did they do this, what were they thinking, what was the thought process, and why, once they got over here, they never talked about it."
At one point, Kranish said, Kerry became emotional, particularly when reviewing the front-page news accounts of his grandfather's suicide. "God, that's awful, Oh, God, that's awful. This is kind of heavy," the senator told him. "That explains a lot. It connects the dots. My dad was sort of painfully remote and shut off, and angry about the loss of his sister [she had died of cancer] and lack of a father."
He also shook his head in wonder at the number of times he had visited the Copley Plaza, never knowing its significance in his family's history. "How many times have I walked into that hotel...." he said, his voice trailing off.
No Trace of a Past
Horni Benesov's current mayor, Josef Klech, says that he has considered extending an invitation to Senator Kerry to visit his grandfather's birthplace. But, admits Klech, the unavoidable truth is that there really isn't much to see. Not a single trace remains of Kerry's ancestors; not a single person in town remembers the Kohn family.
Over time, the entire town--except for the Catholic chapel, parish, and church--has been completely rebuilt. An unremarkable box-shaped apartment building now sits on the lot where Kohn's house once stood. Gone is the small Jewish cemetery where Kohn's parents Benedikt and Mathilde were likely buried. In place of the Kohn brewery there is a public sauna advertising discount rates to local residents.
Reflecting on His Roots
In Kerry's office, half a world away, the senator chose to say little publicly about the discovery. He did discuss the matter with Reform Judaism magazine, however. "This was an incredible illumination," Kerry says. "It really connected the things I'd talked about for years but now understand more personally. I never really knew why my grandfather left Austria or why he underwent such personal transformation, but we do know many of the things that were happening under the old Hapsburg Empire. We know what life was like for too many of them, and the ultimate turn for even greater tragedy it would take not much later."
As for why Fritz Kohn chose the path he did, Prague-based genealogist Julius Miller believes he was a man who, like many other European Jews, looked to start over and build a better life for himself and his family. "Thousands of European Jews abandoned their past," Miller says. "The story of Frederick Kerry, alias Fritz Kohn, mirrors the histories of many Jewish families who came to America in the early 1900s."
Postscript
In a twist of irony, John Kerry's younger brother Cameron converted to Judaism in 1983, shortly before marrying Kathy Weinman, a Jewish woman raised in a Conservative household in Michigan. As a member of a Boston Brahmin family, Cameron thought he was entering uncharted territory. Only later did he realize that he was returning to his genealogical roots.
When Cameron, now a Boston litigation attorney, was courting Kathy, they decided that "we were going to raise any children we had as Jewish," Cameron recalls. After that, he says, it wasn't difficult for him to become a Jew himself. "Converting seemed to me a small step--I wanted to be a full participant in their upbringing. [My decision] was helped along by the warm reception and welcome I received from the clergy at Temple Israel [in Boston]."
Converting, he says, was far less traumatic than he had anticipated. There were no objections from the rest of the Kerry clan, and his new Jewish family at Temple Israel welcomed him with open arms. Today Kathy is a member of the synagogue board. Their two daughters have become b'nai mitzvah at the temple, and were delighted when they found out about their great-grandfather.
"It's been wonderful for the whole family," Cameron Kerry says. "It's ironic--I guess things come full circle."
