Judge Nixes Schiavo's Feeding Tube

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - A federal judge on Friday refused to order the reinsertion of Terri Schiavo's feeding tube, yet another setback for the parents of the brain-damaged woman in their battle against her husband to keep her alive.
For a second time, U.S. District Judge James Whittemore ruled against the parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who had asked him to grant their emergency request to restore her feeding tube while he considers a lawsuit they filed.
The tube was removed a week ago on a state judge's order that agreed with her husband, who has said she has no hope for recovery and wouldn't want to be kept alive artificially. The Schindlers believe their daughter could improve and wouldn't want to die.
As of Friday morning, Terri Schiavo, 41, had been without food or water for almost seven days and was showing signs of dehydration - flaky skin, dry tongue and lips, and sunken eyes, according to attorneys and friends of the Schindlers. Doctors have said she would probably die within a week or two of the tube being pulled

JERUSALEM - The Jerusalem District Court sentenced a 37-year-old Talmud (Oral Law) teacher of mentally challenged students to a 12 year prison term Wednesday for acts of sodomy and sexual misconduct involving teens and children.
The teacher, who is currently divorced without children, mainly molested family members, including his nephew, who was 10-years-old at the time.Investigators found dozens of naked photos of children on his personal computer.
The teacher, who grew up in New York, arrived in Israel to study in a Yeshiva; he later returned to the U.S. to complete his degree in Computer Science, but came back to Israel to teach children with learning disabilities and serve as a boarding school counselor.
The teacher told welfare services that a summer camp instructor had sexually assaulted him when he was 11 years-old.
The judges criticized the teacher’s relatives for not taking action even though they were aware of some of his problems after he had discussed them with his parents.
The judges also criticized the authorities.
“Today, the state is not sufficiently prepared to deal with sex offenders, and this harms both the public and the accused,” they said in the ruling.
“An extended sentence is not enough to deal with and rehabilitate sex offenders, and especially sick pedophiles, who in some cases are not even aware that what they are doing is wrong.”

Fact 1: The inventory of crude oil in the U.S. right now is 8 percent larger than it was this same week last year. And that's the biggest amount of crude on hand since the middle of 2002.
Fact 2: That the 8 percent increase doesn't include all the oil purchased by Washington and put into the emergency Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which now has 685 million barrels. That's up from 650 million barrels last year and 599 million in '03.
Fact 3: There is 7.5 percent more gasoline in stock right now in this country than during the same week last year. And you'd have to go back to this same week in 1999 to find more gasoline inventory — when the average price at the pump was only $1.01 a gallon.
Fact 4: Including everything made of oil, there is 4.9 percent more supply this year than when Spring began in 2004. And there's about 10 percent more of all petroleum products in stock today than when the Iraqi war began.
And, finally, Fact 5: American consumers are being conned by speculators — and a media that doesn't ask enough tough questions — into thinking there is some sort of supply problem.

Haaretz reported Friday.
The government will fall and new elections will be held
unless the Knesset approves the 2005 budget by midnight, next Thursday.
Haaretz said at the moment, the support for the bill may not be enough.
The 58 legislators expected to vote for the budget include five members of
dovish Yahad Party and two independent Knesset members, all of whom
belong to the opposition.

(IsraelNN.com) Israel is preparing an appeal to the
United States for more than $500 million to cover ballooning costs for
disengagement. The money would not be used for compensating residents
forced to leave their homes, officials said.
Failure to secure American aid would force a large cut in the 2006 budget,
according to the Finance Ministry. Government officials revealed yesterday that
the total cost of dismantling 25 Jewish communities and withdrawing soldiers has
risen 40 per cent over the original estimate. The new figure is seven billion
shekels ($1.6 billion).

US will accept Israel settlements
Dan Kurtzer (Talmudic Jew) told Israel Radio that it was unrealistic to expect a full Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank in any final status agreement.
He denied reports that he had said there was no such understanding between the US and the Israelis.
He said he was reiterating pledges by President Bush on the issue.
During a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to the White House last April, President George W Bush said a permanent peace deal would have to reflect "demographic realities" in the West Bank regarding Israel's settlements.
Palestinian officials criticised Mr Kurtzer's comments.
"The United States can't decide on behalf of the Palestinians and can't decide final status negotiation issues by itself.
"We urge the United States to have Israel stop settlement activity," senior Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said.
Expansion planned
Earlier this week, the Israeli government said it was planning to build 3,500 extra homes at the West Bank settlement of Maale Adumin, to the east of Jerusalem.
Palestinian officials called on the US to help block the expansion, saying if it went ahead it could prevent East Jerusalem becoming the capital of a future Palestinian state.
The international community considers all settlements in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as illegal under international law, though Israel disputes this.
About 400,000 Jewish settlers live in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem - alongside more than four million Palestinians.

Jesus Christ had, as Haman and Hitler, a struggle with the leading Jews. Most people are unaware of this, but Jesus
celebrated the feast of Purim!
In John 5, the Lord Jesus
is up in Jerusalem for an unnamed feast. Scholars have debated whether the feast
was Passover, Purim,
Succoth or even Pentecost (Bowman 1971). Some have objected to Purim
because it is a "minor" feast and not one of the three
"major" pilgrimage festivals (Deut. 16:16). That argument is
irrelevant because Jesus
also celebrated another "minor" holiday, Hanukkah (John 10:22; Franz
1998:25,26). Chronologically, the only feast that makes sense is Purim
in AD 28. The feast of John 5 fell on a Sabbath (5:9). The only feast day to
fall on a Sabbath between AD 25 and AD 35 was Purim
of AD 28 (Faulstich 1986). The Spirit of God intentionally left out the name of
the feast because the Lord's name was deliberately left out of the Book of
Esther. In John 5, Jesus
healed a man who had an infirmity for 38 years near the Pools of Bethesda (John
5:1-9). It is also the first time in His public ministry that He declared that
"God was His Father, making Himself equal with God" (5:18). He also
said that He was the "Son of God" (5:25) and the "Son of
Man" (5:27).
Did Jesus get dressed up
in a Purim costume? Did
He dress like Mordecai or Ahasuerus? Or perhaps a "modern day" Haman
like Herod the Great, Archelaus, Pontius Pilate or some other contemporary
anti-Semite? I do not know if He did. Did Jesus
get drunk? No, even though He was accused of being a "winebibber"
(Matt. 11:19; Luke 7:34). Did He eat the "Haman's ears"? I do not
know. But He did observe the commandment to give gifts to the poor. I'm sure He
also attended the reading of the Scroll of Esther in one of the 480 synagogues
of Jerusalem (PT Megillah 3:1; BT Megillah 3b; Fine 1996:9). Did
He stomp His feet and say, "Blessed be Mordecai" or "Cursed be
Haman" when their respective names were read? I do not know. Yet I'm sure
He contemplated the message of the book of Esther. The theme of the book is
this: "God's preservation of His unbelieving people, and the celebration of
that event in the feast of Purim"
(Shepperson 1975:26).

Purim coincidence
Calendar quirk should make for a very Good Friday
This year, for the first time since 1910, Purim will coincide with Good Friday. While it is tempting to toss aside this as a calendrical quirk, this collision of holy days yields fascinating shadings to the meaning of each.
The Christian Holy Week normally coincides with Passover, with Easter occurring on the Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. But during Jewish leap years Passover is occasionally pushed more than a month beyond that, leaving Easter and Good Friday to contend with Passover’s little sister, that mischievous demi-festival, that masked “Mordy-Gras,” Purim.

Purim is in many ways the anti-Passover.
One is noted for its levity while the other is totally unleavened. On Purim, Jews let loose, freeing themselves from restrictions and imbibing until all boundaries are dissolved, even those distinguishing good from evil. On Passover, the key to liberation is through tightening those restrictions, exchanging Purim’s anarchy for a severity of structure so complete that its main meal is even called the “Order.”
It’s part of the natural order for American Jews and Christians that Passover and Holy Week coincide.
That way, the networks can show “The Ten Commandments” and we can have lots of interfaith discussions on the seasonal symbolism of the egg and whether Manischewitz was served at the Last Supper. As far as we know, none of the apostles was asked to pass the hamantaschen.
But this year, although the markets have been stocked with matzah since Presidents’ Day, that prankster Purim is showing up instead. So while our Christian neighbors will be commemorating the crucifixion, we’ll be contemplating the passion of the prune.

And rather than dwelling on those eternal questions of collective guilt, this year Jews will proudly proclaim, on Good Friday, “We did it! Yep. We hanged him” — speaking of Haman, of course, and not about Jesus.

Although Purim and Good Friday so rarely coincide (strangely, it will happen again in three years, then not until 2113), I am not the first to make the connection between the deaths of Haman and Jesus.
The ancient Aramaic translations of the book of Esther in fact use the word tzalab, meaning “crucify,” in describing Haman’s fate, a view echoed by the first-century historian Josephus, and there is doubt as to whether hanging using a noose was even known in ancient times.
During the fifth century, Byzantine emperors forbade the Jewish practice of burning an effigy of Haman on Purim, suspecting that they were doing it as a parody of Jesus’ death.
In the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo also depicts Haman’s death in Christological terms.
And there are strong parallels between how both the Passion Play and on a much smaller scale the Purim story have incited mob violence and hatred toward the Other.
A year ago many Jews feared that Mel Gibson’s “The
Passion of the Christ” would unleash a torrent of anti-Semitism. What ensued was a flood of free publicity, but very little else. As I left the theater after seeing the film, bristling at the stereotypes perpetuated by Gibson, I looked around at the tear-filled eyes of those sitting around me and realized that they had been watching a completely different movie.
I can imagine that the inverse would be true if Steven Spielberg were to tackle the Purim story. Non-Jews would sneer at the Jews’ gleeful butchering of their Persian hosts, while I would be cheering the last-second salvation of a buzzer-beating God, reassured by the “happily-ever-after” ending too often denied Jews in the real world.
Hitler reportedly banned the celebration of Purim in Poland in 1941 because he understood the power of this story. He sensed that the hanging of Haman could galvanize the faith of Jews in the same way that the crucifixion ignites the passion of Christians.
It is telling that when Christians hear their story, they cry in silence. When Jews hear the Megillah, we laugh and make lots of noise.
We might surmise that if, as Carol Burnett said, “Comedy is tragedy plus time,” then “Purim is the passion plus a good punch line.” Come to think of it, a risen Messiah is a pretty good punch line too.
In any faith, God always gets the last laugh.
According to the Book of Esther, “These days of Purim will never cease among the Jews.” From this, the midrash deduces that when the Messiah comes, only Purim will continue to be celebrated.
Moshiach ben satan
Perhaps this year on Purim we’ll become more conscious of the tears being shed around us, while at the same time understanding that the laughter ultimately will prevail, for all peoples, on that sunny spring day when hatred dissolves into love and Haman and Mordechai become one.
That will be a very Good Friday indeed.

(CNSNews.com) -- Prior to a new hearing by the U.S. District Court in Tampa, Fla., on Thursday, the attorney for Michael Schiavo invoked the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ while calling on Terri Schiavo's parents to end their efforts to save their daughter's life.
"We believe it's time for that to stop as we approach this Easter weekend," noted "right-to-die" attorney, author and activist George Felos told a throng of gathered television cameras, "and that Mrs. Schiavo be able to die in peace."
Terri Schiavo's brother, Bobby Schindler, disputed Felos' claim that what Terri has experienced since her feeding tube was removed one week ago is peaceful.
