World Condemns North Korean Missile Tests

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) - North Korea test-fired a seventh missile Wednesday, intensifying the furor that began when the reclusive regime defied international protests by launching a long-range missile and at least five shorter-range rockets earlier in the day.

An official at the South Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that North Korea had tested a seventh missile that was either short- or medium-range. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity citing agency rules, had no additional details.

Japan's Kyodo News agency reported that the missile landed six minutes after launch, but did not say where. The chief of Russia's general staff said that Russian tracking systems showed that Pyongyang may have launched up to 10 missiles during the day, the Interfax news agency reported.

The missiles, all of which apparently fell harmlessly into the Sea of Japan, provoked international condemnation, the convening of an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council and calls in Tokyo for economic sanctions against the impoverished communist regime.

Mexico's leftist party demanded Tuesday that electoral officials recount every vote cast in the country's closest presidential race ever, claiming the balloting was manipulated and renewing fears that its fiery candidate will launch massive street protests if he doesn't get his way.

The campaign manager for Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador made the announcement in a statement read to reporters.

BEIT HANOUN, July 5, 2006 (WAFA)- Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) wounded Wednesday morning a child in the north of Gaza Strip (GS), medical sources said.

They told WAFA that an eleven -year-old child was hit with a shrapnel when Israeli tanks opened fire at citizens in Bet Hanoun town, north GS, wounding him seriously in the mouth.

Raped Iraqi woman feared US troops: report

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A woman apparently at the center of a rape-murder probe by the U.S. military in Iraq was only 15 and voiced fears about soldiers' advances before she and her family were killed in March, the Washington Post said on Monday.

Quoting the mayor of Mahmudiya, near Baghdad, an unnamed hospital official and neighbors of the alleged victims, the newspaper named the woman, her parents and 7-year-old sister as having been killed in their home in the town on March 11.

The paper did not affirm the woman, Abeer Qasim Hamza, was killed by Americans, but local people quoted appeared to believe the dead family was the one involved in the U.S. investigation.

A U.S. military official in Baghdad told Reuters details of the incident they described were at odds with U.S. documents in the 10-day-old investigation of at least three soldiers. U.S. officials had the rape victim's age as 20, he said. However, he added, he was not aware of any other such cases in the area.

The U.S. military has given few details publicly. Officials say at least three soldiers are under investigation over the alleged rape of a woman and the killing of three relatives, including a child, in their home at Mahmudiya on March 12.

Two are suspected of rape and one of these, since discharged from the army, is also suspected of murder, officials said.

The Washington Post quoted Omar Janabi, who said he was a neighbor, saying Abeer Qasim's mother had told him on March 10 that the young woman had complained repeatedly about advances made toward her by U.S. soldiers at a nearby checkpoint.

Janabi told the newspaper he was one of the first people to arrive at the family house after the attack. He said he found Abeer sprawled dead in a corner, her hair and a pillow next to her consumed by fire, and her dress pushed up to her neck.

IAF Intensifies Attacks After Rocket Hits Ashkelon

Israel destroyed the PA's interior ministry building in Gaza early this morning, and bombed a Hamas training camp and Jihad-training school. Top Hamas government figures are in hiding.

Last night's Kassam rocket attack on the heart of Ashkelon - Israel's fifth-largest city, with a population of nearly 110,000 - marks the latest "major escalation" in the Hamas war against Israel. In response, Israel has threatened a major retaliation against the terrorist authority.

Hamas has marked a number of achievements over the past year, beginning last summer with Israel's retreat from Gaza, and continuing a few months later with the Israeli and U.S. consent to allow the terrorist group to participate in the Palestinian Authority election. Haaretz commentator Amir Oren said this week that Israel's consent was based on political considerations. The current situation, he said, was "brought upon us by Sharon, Olmert and Mofaz when they gave into American pressure to allow Hamas to take part in the election, fearing that if Hamas were to be kept out, the terrorist attacks would be renewed, thus harming the Kadima party on the eve of the Israeli election."

Following its overwhelming victory in the PA election, Hamas continued its success by forming a government, and then evading the Western countries' financial boycott by raising hundreds of millions of dollars from Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran. In the meanwhile, Hamas terrorists launched a massive rocket campaign against Sderot and other Negev areas, implemented an impressive attack in which they tunneled into Israel, killed two soldiers and kidnapped a third, and have now successfully rocketed Ashkelon.

Throughout this process, Israeli officials have termed various junctures "a dramatic escalation" and have threatened - and sometimes attacked - Hamas in various ways.

The Kassam attack on Ashkelon was no exception. Prime Minister Olmert said last night, "This grave act and this criminal attempt to harm Israeli citizens will have far-reaching ramifications, and Hamas will be the first to feel them."

While Israel's offensive in Gaza continued and intensified last night, Olmert convened his security-political cabinet this morning to decide a course of action. Defense Minister Amir Peretz is expected to recommend strong action against Hamas. Hamas has already threatened counter-actions.

One likely option that Israel might implement is to send the IDF into northern Gaza more massively and permanently, in order to prevent Kassam launching-cells from nearing the border fence. With the now-proven 10-12 kilometer range of the new Kassams, and given the fact that the Gaza Strip is less than 8 kilometers wide in most places, this is likely to prove to be very difficult.

Last night's bombing of the Hamas interior ministry was the second in a week, and this time the four-story building totally collapsed and began burning. Four Arabs were reportedly moderately injured. In the previous attack, only Hamas minister Said Siam's 4th-floor office was targeted.

It would be JUSTIFIED if the Palestinians struck the knesset and destroyed it, then move to Sanhedrin and the supreme Aholibah court.....But what is happening is irreversible

Israel Air Force Apache helicopters also bombed a Hamas training camp in southern Gaza. Six consecutive missiles totally destroyed one of the buildings.

A third target was a school on Jaffa Rd. in Gaza City which is known to teach a particularly radical brand of Islam and hatred of Israel, Jews and the West. The NFC Hebrew news website reports that a study by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, based on a document written by the late arch-terrorist Sheikh Ahmed Yassin himself, presents the goals of the school: it was designed to form a new generation of young Palestinians imbued with the spirit of radical Islam and permeated with deep political awareness of the fight against Israel and against the "world Zionist plots" and the "hate of the Crusades."

Another front in the offensive last night was Khan Yunis, adjacent to much of what used to be Gush Katif. Tanks and infantry, covered by helicopters, penetrated deep into the area, but the objective was not publicized.

IDF forces in Ramallah attempted, yet again, to arrest the chairman of the PA's parliament, Abdel Aziz Dvik, and two other parliament members. The forces surrounded their homes, but the wanted men were not found and are in hiding. They have been forced to be on the run since last week, when the IDF arrested 26 PA legislators and 8 Hamas government ministers.

Two Qassam rockets slam into southern Ashkelon

Eight people were lightly wounded when Palestinians in Gaza fired two more Qassam rockets at the southern coastal city of Ashkelon on Wednesday evening. One of the rockets slammed into a southern neighborhood and the second landed in the Zikim area.

Eight people suffered from shock, including two seven-year-old children, and were treated by Magen David Adom paramedics.

Hours after Palestinians hit Ashkelon with a Qassam rocket first time on Tuesday and Defense Minister Amir Peretz instructed the military to intensify its operation in the Gaza Strip, Israel Air Force missiles hit the Palestinian Interior Ministry building in Gaza City in a pre-dawn strike Wednesday.

UN expert says U.S., EU, others ignoring rights abuses by Israel

GENEVA - A UN human rights expert on Wednesday criticized the United States, European Union, Russia and the United Nations for ignoring countless Israeli violations of human rights, international law and other standards.

John Dugard, a South African lawyer responsible for investigating alleged
human rights abuses by Israel in Palestinian areas, said the United States and other international powers who make up the so-called Quartet of Mideast mediators have done nothing to rein in Israel.

Detained Hamas lawmakers reject authority of IDF court

The attorney representing five Hamas lawmakers arrested by Israel said Wednesday that his clients refuse to recognize the authority of the Israel Defense Forces court at the Ofer military base to rule on their case.

The five, who were detained last week as part of a mass arrest of Hamas officials, had their remand extended by five days Wednesday.

Four of the five who appeared in court Wednesday are parliament members; the fifth is the Palestinian Minister for Waqf Affairs, Naif Rajoub.

Their attorney, Jawad Bulus, said his clients viewed their remand as an abduction.

"The process is a slap in the face to the many factors that gave legitimacy to fair, public and democratic elections held in the Palestinian Authority, in which they were elected by the Palestinian people," Bulus said.

Enron Corp. founder Kenneth Lay, who was convicted of helping perpetuate one of the most sprawling business frauds in U.S. history, died Wednesday of a heart attack in Colorado. He was 64.

The Pitkin, Colo., Sheriff's Department said officers were called to Lay's house in Old Snowmass, Colo., shortly after 1 a.m. Mountain time. He was taken to Aspen Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:11 a.m. Lay, who lived in Houston, frequently vacationed in Colorado.

Crude oil closes at record high in NY

Crude oil futures soared to all-time record highs in New York as markets were roiled by news of missile launches by North Korea and tensions over Iran, dealers said.

New York's main contract, light sweet crude for delivery in August, leapt 1.26 dollars to a record closing high of 75.19 dollars a barrel. Prices soared as high as 75.40 dollars a barrel, an all-time intraday record.

That topped the prior record close of 75.17 dollars and intraday record of 75.35 dollars a barrel, both set on April 21.
