LONDON (Reuters) - Around 20,000 civilians were wounded in the Iraq war and the U.S.-British occupiers are ignoring their suffering, a research group says in what it terms the first study of the conflict's casualty toll.

"The maimed civilians of Iraq have been brushed under the carpet," the Iraq Body Count (IBC) said on Thursday.

The Anglo-American group of academics and peace activists chided U.S. and British postwar administrators for failing to set up programmes for the wounded or pay them compensation.

"A sizeable if as yet unknown proportion of Iraqi families will contain a relative whose life was ended or put on hold by the U.S. or British forces," it said in a report seen by Reuters prior to publication on its website, www.iraqbodycount.net.

"Even if only in self-interest, the U.S. and UK administrations should be putting the needs of the injured at the very heart of its strategy to 'win hearts and minds'."

The report, titled "Adding Indifference to Injury", said the IBC had calculated civilian casualties known so far as between a minimum of 16,439 and maximum 19,733.

Incomplete information about casualties meant that the maximum figure was likely to be a closer approximation to the real total and might itself be an under-estimate, it said.

The IBC's figures were based on media reports and counting projects from independent investigators up to July 6.

The group has also for months been publishing a running total of estimated civilian deaths from the Iraq war, with its latest calculation a minimum of 6,086 and a maximum of 7,797.

The IBC said the U.S. and British military's reluctance to calculate the number of civilian wounded was inexcusable.

"There is indeed a possibility that not every death can be accounted for," it said. "Injuries are another matter. The injured are alive, perhaps receiving treatment, and the cause, nature and extent of their injuries will appear in medical, official, and informal records."

The need for investigation and assessment "is particularly urgent, for many of the injured may still be suffering and their condition may be improved if we act promptly," it added.

The United States and Britain have repeatedly said their forces tried to keep civilian casualties to a minimum, but have declined to give any estimates.

A spokesman for Britain's Ministry of Defence said it was impossible to say whether the IBC estimate was accurate.

"The conflict was aimed at minimising civilian casualties," he said. "But it's very difficult to assess figures."

The spokesman said U.S. and British efforts to bring about an Iraqi administration and resurrect infrastructure, including medical facilities, would benefit the wounded. Compensation claims should be taken up with the interim authority, he added.

The occupiers' only attention to wounded civilians has been in high-profile cases like Ali Ismaeel Abbas, the 12-year-old boy airlifted out for medical treatment after losing both arms, or limited care from some units after battles, the IBC said.

That has left the wounded relying on vandalised and depleted Iraqi hospitals and "a few charities and aid agencies, which have struggled against U.S. obstruction to gain a foothold for their work with the sick and injured," the report said.

Twenty thousand injury compensation claims at $10,000 (6,200 pounds) each would cost the occupiers $200 million -- less than the United States spends every two days on the occupation, the group said.

"What excuse can the U.S. possibly have for declining this opportunity to do some good for those who desperately need it (and for whose hurt it is responsible), and in the process, win back some of that "goodwill" it has lost in Iraq and much of the world?"

NEW YORK -- A number of readers and Jewish organizations are complaining to The Philadelphia Inquirer that a Tony Auth cartoon may be anti-Semitic.

 

 

 

Auth said this isn't true. "If you look at the body of my work, you can't cling to the belief that I'm an anti-Semite," he told E&P Online, noting, for instance, that he has frequently done cartoons critical of Israel's opponents.

 

His July 31 cartoon showed a Jewish-star-shaped fence penning in Palestinian men, women, and children. It was referring, of course, to the real-life fence Israel is building for what the country says is security reasons. "When I created the cartoon," said Auth, "I asked myself, 'How can I do a drawing showing that building a fence separates Palestinians and is an obstacle to peace?' I did not do it gleefully but with sadness."

 

About 150 people wrote the Inquirer as of Aug. 7, with most mail critical of the cartoon. Some said Israel is using the fence to protect itself from terrorists, not to imprison Palestinians. Others complained that Auth's use of a Jewish star was problematic because that symbol represents not only Israel but Jews in general. Israeli Consul General Giora Becher told the Jewish Exponent publication: "It was insensitive for the cartoonist to use the Jewish symbol of a Magen David, and to use it with barbed wire and some connotation of the concentration camp." And Harold Goldman, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, told the Exponent: "To me, the Tony Auth cartoon crossed a line between what is acceptable political commentary and satire to what is clearly anti-Semitic and anti-Israel commentary."

 

But, Auth said, criticizing Israeli policies doesn't automatically make a commentator anti-Semitic. He did note that he's giving some thought to whether using a Jewish star was the right thing to do. The cartoonist acknowledged that the star may represent Jews in general, but added that "it is the symbol of the state of Israel. It's on Israeli jets and tanks and the flag."

 

Lee Salem, executive vice president and editor of Universal Press Syndicate, said in an e-mail to a critic of the cartoon: "From what I've read in the Israeli press, not even the Israeli populace is unanimous [about] the present policy. But that seems to have little avail here in the States. Questioning or criticism of Israeli policy by Americans is just labeled anti-Semitism."

 

None of Auth's 50-plus newspaper clients complained about the cartoon to Universal as of Aug. 7, according to Kathie Kerr, the syndicate's director of communications. She added: "When Tony did a cartoon critical of radical Islam, there was an outpouring claiming he was anti-Muslim. It's the lot of the editorial-cartooning profession." The Islam-related cartoon brought in about 3,000 critical responses.

 

Auth said the Inquirer has been "very supportive" of him with the July 31 cartoon and over the years. He joined the newspaper in 1971, and won a Pulitzer Prize five years later.

(New Zealand Press Association) -- An award-winning cartoonist dumped by New Zealand's biggest newspaper because of his drawings on the Middle East conflict said he stood by his work and rejected an editor's right to direct what he could or could not draw.

 

Malcolm Evans, twice named as the country's cartoonist of the year, says he was sacked by The New Zealand Herald after the newspaper received complaints from Jews about his cartoons on the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

 

Evans, who denied that his cartoons were anti-Semitic, said while he accepted an editor's right to reject a cartoon, he did not accept an editor's right to direct what he should draw.

 

He said the paper's editor-in-chief, Gavin Ellis, had told him to stop submitting cartoons on Israel.

 

However, Ellis said Evans had been sacked on legal advice, but would not comment further.

 

Evans, who had worked for the Herald for seven years, told National Radio the argument had started when the paper received letters from readers about his cartoons critical of Israel.

 

"I have got to acknowledge in the first instance that the paper had the balls to publish those cartoons, but once they were published and reaction came in, the paper seemed to shrink from association with them and ultimately I received this edict."

 

The Waikato Times newspaper quoted Auckland rabbi Jeremy Lawrence saying he believed the cartoons lacked balance in their portrayal of Israeli-Palestinian relations and had double standards.

'Bin Laden' Tape Claims Plot Vs. Muslims

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- An audiotape purportedly from Osama bin Laden calls President Bush "stupid" and claims American war plans against Iraq are part of a plot to attack Muslim nations in the Middle East and North Africa.

The tape appeared to be the same 53-minute recording of which a few excerpts were released Thursday by the British-based Islamic Al-Ansaar news agency. It began appearing in full Sunday on Islamic-oriented Web sites. Al-Ansaar had said it acquired the tape from a seller who advertised it over the Internet.

The United States' goal in waging war against Iraq is to change the regional map to benefit Israel, according to the raspy voice said to belong to bin Laden.

"It is clear that the preparations to attack Iraq are part of a series of attacks prepared for nations of the region including Syria, Iran, Egypt and Sudan," the voice said.

"The aim of the Crusaders' campaign is to prepare the atmosphere for the establishment of the so-called greater Israel state, which includes great parts of Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Jordan and large portions of (Saudi Arabia)," it said.

Bin Laden exhorts Muslims to fight "enemy" U.S.

DUBAI, Feb 16 (Reuters) - An Islamist website broadcast an audio tape purported to be the voice of Osama bin Laden telling Muslims to fight against the "enemy" United States and saying holy war was the only way to win Muslim rights.

If authenticated, the recording broadcast by the Jihad Forum site would be the latest proof that bin Laden had escaped the 2001 U.S.-led military campaign to flush him and his al Qaeda operatives from Afghanistan.

The voice on the tape was very clear and sounded like previous audio and video recordings allegedly made by bin Laden.

"Regarding this Zionist Crusader war on the nation of Islam, it is the duty of Muslims to fight for the sake of God and to incite the faithful to fight the infidels," the speaker said.

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said there had been some speculation about a second tape swirling around within the intelligence community for the past couple of days.

"Obviously we haven't authenticated it. But again, the message is consistent. The values of the West are anathema to these people," he told the ABC "This Week" program.

"If you don't believe, you're an infidel, and they're going to do everything they can to undermine the United States as the primary target...," he said.

Jihad Forum said the new message was made on the occasion of the three-day Muslim Eid al-Adha feast, which this year coincided with the threat of a looming U.S. war on Iraq and heightened anti-American sentiment in many Arab countries.

"It is the utmost duty to fight the enemy that sabotages the world. The only way to deal a decisive blow in the conflict with the enemy is through killing and fighting," the recording said.

The Saudi-owned Al Hayat newspaper first published excerpts of the recording, which they said could be found on the Islamist "Jihad Forum" site hosted by the www.arabforum.net website.

It follows another tape broadcast last week by Qatar's al Jazeera television in which the Saudi-born militant called on Muslims to stage suicide attacks to prevent a U.S. war on Iraq.

Jazeera, which normally obtains bin Laden's tapes, aired the latest 53-minute tape retrieved from the Internet over a picture of bin Laden in camouflage with a rifle by his side.

Both recordings coincide with a state of high alert in the United States and its ally Britain. They said they had concrete information that al Qaeda was planning a slew of attacks.

Attacks have in the past followed messages by bin Laden, and recent tapes by him have heightened fears of an imminent strike.

WAR TO CREATE "GREATER ISRAEL"

Bin Laden said an attack on Iraq would be followed by U.S. "aggressions" against more Arab countries such as Egypt, Sudan, Iran and Syria for the benefit of its ally Israel.

"This attack on Iraq is part of a new crusade to prepare the region, after dividing it, for the creation of a Greater Israel. This means the whole region will be ruled by Jews," he said.

The recording began with bin Laden identifying the United States and its "foolish" President George W. Bush as the enemy.

It said Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair wanted to carve up the Middle East like a 1916 British-French pact that divided up the territory of the Ottoman Empire.

"The United States' goal to divide the Middle East is not just a passing fancy," the al Qaeda leader said. "The only way to defeat the infidels is through Holy War.

"Oh Muslims, do not fear America because we have defeated them repeatedly and they are the most cowardly of people when you meet them face to face," he declared.

He lauded wars Muslims had fought and won against "Western Crusaders" throughout history and recounted the times militants -- some from his al Qaeda group -- had bombed U.S. and Western targets in Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Somalia, Kenya and Tanzania.

He also praised the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, which the United States accuses him of planning, saying they "exposed the ugly face of America and revealed the reality of the conflict between Crusaders and Muslims."

"At a time of great depression for Muslims, when the Zionist American alliance was killing our sons...a group of youth hijacked enemy planes in a beautiful, courageous attack.

"They destroyed the idols of America...They rubbed America's nose in the dirt and wiped its pride in the mud. They destroyed the Twin Towers of New York and with that the legend of America, the superpower."

Bin Laden lambasted America's Arab allies, singling out Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah for his peace initiative last year in which Arabs offered Israel full ties in return for withdrawal from Arab land occupied in the 1967 Middle East War.

WASHINGTON - The blackout that turned out the lights for millions of Americans and Canadians on Thursday once again showed how the interconnected engines of modern life are vulnerable to massive disruptions.

Nuclear plants stopped running. People were trapped in subways and elevators. Planes were grounded. Traffic lights went out.

And, until they learned otherwise, those caught in the steam of summer asked whether America had been attacked again.

"It shows us we have tied together so many systems to build a high quality life, and that creates its own vulnerabilities," said James Gilmore, the former governor of Virginia and chairman of a terrorism panel formed by Congress.

The electric grid is perhaps the most vulnerable of the country's critical systems. Grids are interconnected and, unlike natural gas that can be stored, electricity must be produced in real time, when it is needed.

"With electricity, if there's a loss of a major transmission line or generator, the system can come under an unstable situation where there's too much demand and too little supply," said Tony Anthony, spokesman for the Edison Electric Institute, an organization of shareholder owned electric utilities.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, energy secretary during the Clinton administration, said the blackout underscored the need for Congress to require national standards for the reliability of the electric power system.

"In my view we're the world's greatest superpower but we have a Third World electricity grid," Richardson said. "We have antiquated transmission lines. We have an overloaded system that has not had any new investments and we don't have mandatory reliability standards on utilities, which caused this problem."

National standards, Richardson said, "are needed to prevent utilities from having more power than they can absorb. It's as simple as that."

In a post-Sept. 11 environment, there clearly was a psychological effect.

"When something like this happens and you have to come down from the 37th floor it makes you wonder, was this terrorism or what?" said John Meehan, 56, who walked down that many stories in a Cleveland office building.

Larry Brown, one of the institute officials who advises the government on electric grid vulnerabilities, said there are three reasons that better facilities have not been built: the cost, environmental opposition and the unwillingness of communities to locate such facilities near homes.

Brown said the energy bill now before Congress would provide needed financial incentives. But that will not stop lawsuits by environmentalists or local opposition.

"Things like this can wake people up to the reality that society relies on electricity, and expects electricity to be reliable. But reliability depends on facilities," he said.

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for military operations inside the United States, said Friday it will begin an exercise next week to test its ability to respond to multiple domestic emergencies simultaneously, including a bio-terror attack in Nevada.

The exercise, dubbed Determined Promise '03, includes a simulated hurricane, real and simulated wildfires, an airborne terrorist threat in Alaska and an outbreak of pneumonic plague in Nevada.

It begins Monday with the plague outbreak in Clark County, which includes 70 percent of Nevada's population, including Las Vegas. Local authorities will respond first by activating an emergency operations center, followed by action at the state level and activation of the Nevada National Guard on Wednesday. Northern Command will direct the use of active-duty forces.

At the same time, Northern Command's headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, Colo., will deal with a variety of simulated natural disasters and terrorist threats elsewhere in the country.

Lt. Col. Dan Stoneking, a Pentagon spokesman, said the exercise has been planned for months and has no direct connection to this week's power blackouts in the Northeast.

Fifteen federal offices and agencies will participate, including the assistant secretary of defense for homeland security, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, as well as intelligence agencies such as the National Reconnaissance Office and the CIA.

Also participating will be the American Red Cross and the American Association of Railroads, as well as seven state and local organizations, including National Guard units in Nevada, Alabama and Rhode Island. Twenty-eight active-duty military units will be involved, including the headquarters of Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Va., and Air Combat Command in Langley, Va.

As part of the exercise, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, at Colorado Springs, Colo., will conduct a one-day air exercise in Alaska to test the command's ability to deal with potential airborne terrorist threats and to coordinate with Northern Command.

The exercise will have 2,000 participants and cost $2 million, according to Northern Command. It ends Aug. 28.

NEW YORK (AFP) - US and Canadian authorities battled renewed chaos in New York and other major cities as they struggled to end the worst power cuts to hit North America.

As the two countries blamed each other for the outages, hundreds of flights were cancelled, public transport remained crippled and there were widespread appeals for people to stay home in the US northeast and midwest, and Ontario.

Thousands of people unable to get back to their homes slept on the streets of New York City where the first death blamed on the blackouts -- a man who suffered a heart attack in a fire -- was reported.

And millions awoke Friday, a half day after the trouble started, to find there was still no power, with temperatures expected to shoot past a sweltering 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 Celsius).

With the outages estimated to be costing billions of dollars a day, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg said electricity had returned to about a quarter of the city but substantial power supplies would only return at the end of the day.

He appealed for people in non-essential jobs to stay home.

The city subway, where thousands were trapped in the hours after the power cut started on Thursday, remained closed and few buses and ferries were operating. But the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites) opened on time.

Major airports in New York and other cities reopened but there was widespread disruption. American Airlines alone cancelled 182 flights early Friday and the figure was expected to grow.

Power was restored to airports, but many critical staff could not get to work, freezing security screening machines and preventing aircraft refuelling.

"It is a mess, to put it mildly," said American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner.

Water shortages hit the midwest cities of Cleveland, where the authorities told people to boil the supplies they had, and Detroit.

In the Canadian province of Ontario, where about 10 million people suffered blackouts, premier Ernie Eves also asked people not to go to work.

Lights in western parts of Toronto, Canada's biggest city, came back on early Friday, but Eves warned more rolling blackouts were likely.

For the thousands who spent the night sleeping on newspapers and cardboard on New York streets, sunrise brought some relief.

People who spent the night in Times Square said hundreds had partied through the blackout, entertained by an impromptu jazz quartet and other musicians.

Elsewhere, New York firefighters, heroes of the September 11 terrorist attacks, worked through the night freeing terrified people trapped in elevator cars. Mayor Bloomberg said there were 800 lift rescues.

Bloomberg said 10,000 police patrolled the streets directing traffic and deterring looters. The 80,000 emergency calls was twice the average and the 5,000 calls to emergency medical services was a new record for a 24 hour period.

There were 60 serious fires, up from an average of 10 a night, but almost all appeared accidental caused by candles, the mayor said.

On top of the first fatality blamed on the power cuts, one fireman was seriously injured, Bloomberg said.

The blackout provided the first test of the US emergency response network set up after the September 11 attacks in 2001.

In the blackout zone, at least 21 power plants shut down, seven of them nuclear power stations.

Two Air Force F-16 jets were sent out to patrol the skies between Washington and New York minutes after the outage started and other military aircraft were put on alert, The Washington Post said quoting Pentagon (news - web sites) officials.

Authorities in Canada and the United States appeared reluctant to take the blame for the cuts.

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien's office said Thursday that lightning sparked a fire in a power plant in upstate New York near the Canadian border, triggering the blackout.

But a New York Power Authority spokesman denied there had been a lightning strike at Niagara Mohawk.

And Bloomberg and New York State governor George Pataki both pointed the finger at Canadian power authorities.

"It appears an event took place up in Canada, and that the load shedding that perhaps they should have done was not done in a way that prevented the New York power grid from having to try to supply power," Bloomberg said.

Asked what specifically caused the blackout that stranded tens of millions: Pataki said "the New York independent systems operator says they are virtually certain it had nothing to do in New York state. And they believe it occurred west of Ontario, cascaded from there into Ontario, Canada, and through the northeast."

But Hydro-One, the public power distributor in Ontario, maintained there was no proof the trouble originated in its network. The Ontario premier said his information was that the power cuts originated in the US Midwest.

The outages have highlighted the antiquated state of the North American power system, according to many experts and politicians.

"This should not happen. We are in 2003. We are the most sophisticated society in the world, and we have to have an energy system that is reliable and where this type of systemic failure does not occur," Pataki said.

President George W. Bush (news - web sites) has also promised a thorough inquiry into the cause.

U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton said in meetings with Israeli officials on Monday that he has no doubt America will attack Iraq, and that it will be necessary to deal with threats from Syria, Iran and North Korea afterwards. (maybe not that last part... about North Korea... any time soon)

Bolton, who is undersecretary for arms control and international security, is in Israel for meetings about preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction.

In a meeting with Bolton on Monday, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that Israel is concerned about the security threat posed by Iran. It's important to deal with Iran even while American attention is turned toward Iraq, Sharon said.

Bolton also met with Foreign Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Housing and Construction Minister Natan Sharansky.

NOTE:  Netanyahu and Sharansky along with Sharon are all well known for their avowal of the right of settlement and eventual claim to the West Bank and Gaza as part of Greater Israel -- although Sharon is currently lying that he is willing to enter into a peace process again after Iraq and other Arab nations are vanquished by the U.S. military.  Is Bush such a fool, or does he know he is cooperating with these criminals?

Is Natan Sharansky working in the White House speechwriting office?

Sharansky, Israel's housing minister and deputy prime minister, is the former Soviet dissident and head of a right-wing Russian-immigrant party.  But by coincidence -- or something more -- the Israeli-Palestinian peace plan Sharansky published in the Jerusalem Post on May 3 sounds a lot like the peace proposal Bush delivered in the Rose Garden on June 24.

"The time has come for new leadership" for the Palestinians, Sharansky wrote. "The Palestinians must be encouraged to form an open and free society (Noahide)  that is not burdened by the fear, hatred, and terror that have been sown in recent years by Arafat and his leadership."

Here's Bush's version: "Peace requires a new and different Palestinian leadership so that a Palestinian state can be born. I call on the Palestinian people to elect new leaders, leaders not compromised by terror."

Sharansky wrote that his seven-point plan "cannot happen overnight" and called for a "three-year transition period."

Bush, in turn, said a final agreement "could be reached within three years from now."

Sharansky envisioned an "international coordinating body" headed by the United States that could, with a Palestinian Administrative Authority, "develop the infrastructure for democratic (Noahide Goyim) life among the Palestinians." There would also be an "international economic fund" for industry and infrastructure.

And Bush? "I've asked Secretary Powell to work intensively with Middle Eastern and international leaders to realize the vision of a Palestinian state, focusing them on a comprehensive plan to support Palestinian reform and institution building." The president said the United States would work with the World Bank and international donors on "a major project of economic reform and development."

Finally, Sharansky argued that only a "free and open" society "can serve as a solid guarantee for normal relations between the two peoples." For this reason, "we owe it to ourselves and to our future to help the Palestinians help themselves."

Bush, seven weeks later, submitted that "a stable, peaceful Palestinian state is necessary to achieve the security that Israel longs for." Israel should "take concrete steps to support the emergence of a viable, credible Palestinian state," he added.

The Sharansky and Bush plans are not entirely the same; notably absent from Sharansky's version was Bush's call for Israel to freeze its settlements in Palestinian territory. Still, Sharansky themes began to tumble from the lips of Bush officials.

Speechwriting director Michael Gerson did not return a phone call asking about the coincidence.

The two Americans had been working with others on a major Middle East policy speech for the president, and though they had both met Sharansky many times before, his address struck a chord. Dump the region’s dictators, and make democracy a precondition for peace. “It was pretty much the talk of the conference,” says Richard Perle, an influential Pentagon adviser who helped bring Sharansky to the forum. Two days later President George W. Bush announced the United States was fed up with the Palestinian leadership and effectively ended the era of American engagement with Arafat.

Score one for Sharansky and his crusade to alter the course of American diplomacy. Bush’s speech, possibly the most significant Middle East policy announcement by the United States in a decade, was hardly his doing alone. Arafat fatigue in the Bush administration had been on the rise at least since January, when U.S. officials believe the Palestinian leader lied to Bush about an arms shipment from Iran. Israeli intelligence kept up a steady stream of information linking Arafat to the financing of suicide attacks. By the time Cheney and other delegates arrived at the June 20 conference, Bush advisers had been working on the address for weeks and written nearly 30 drafts, according to one official. Sharansky may have strengthened the resolve of officials who argued against wording that would keep lines open to Arafat. Palestinians object that Arafat is no dictator. He was elected in a 1996 ballot deemed free and fair by observers. At the conference, he says, he spoke privately with Cheney for more than an hour Saturday, two days before the Bush announcement. “More than half our talk was devoted to what would be said in the speech,” he says. For three decades, Gershon Solomon, a militant Israeli who heads an organization dedicated to the destruction of Jerusalem's most holy Islamic shrine, has led Zionist zealots in armed assaults on the Muslim grounds of Haram al-Sharif, or Noble Sanctuary, that encloses both the Dome of the Rock and Al Aqsa mosque. No Israeli political leader has spoken out against the assaults on the Mosque, holy to a billion Muslims around the world. Moreover, no Israeli rabbi has condemned them. Indeed, beginning in 1967, many of the assaults were led by Jewish rabbis.

I first heard about the Israeli militants' intent to destroy the mosque in 1979 when I went to Jerusalem. I talked at length with Bobby Brown, a third-generation American from Brooklyn, flying to the Jewish state and instantly became a new citizen, confiscated land from Palestinians to help build an illegal Jewish settlement. "The mosque," he told me, "has got to go. It is a blot in our land."

Militant Jews such as Brown and Solomon want a Jerusalem that is pure Jewish - without evidence of inhabitants of the other monotheistic faiths and their shrines. Surprisingly, millions of U.S. evangelical Christians endorse and financially support this Jewish plan. Although united in the immediate goal of destroying the mosque, the Israeli militants and Christian zealots have different long-range agendas.

Secular Jews, such as Stanley Goldfoot, one of the perpetrators of the dynamiting in 1946 of the King David Hotel which killed some 100 Christian, Muslim and Jewish civilians, want the mosque destroyed for political reasons. Other Jews believe that the building of the temple on the Muslim grounds will usher in the Jewish Messiah. A growing number of Christians embrace the idea that in all history, Israel is on the center stage. They say God has planned epochs of time ("dispensations") such as the "in-gathering of the Jews in the ancient land of Canaan. One epoch, they say, includes the present time when Jews are obligated to build a Jewish temple and re-institute animal sacrifice, Such epochs or "dispensations" are necessary, they say before Christ can return.

Ironically, while Christian dispensationalists place Israel as the most important nation in all the world, they do not respect or even like Jews- as Jews. Yet, because they believe Christ can only land in a "safe" area near Jerusalem, they make a cult of the land. They thus give total, unquestioned support to Israel.  
 

Goldfoot and Solomon are welcome in countless U.S. pulpits, where Christian Zionists give generous donations of money, as well as their gold wedding rings and gold earrings to finance the mosque's destruction. They know its destruction might well trigger wars culminating in Armageddon, but they welcome this. They push Armageddon along, saying they, as "Born Again Christians," will be spared any suffering, because they will be "Raptured," wafted up into heaven to view the slaughter below.
 

"I am not worried," Lynchburg, Virginia televangelist Jerry Falwell shouts. "You know why? I ain't gonna be here!" This dispensationalist doctrine, less then 200 years old, pervades Assemblies Of God, Pentecostal and other charismatic churches, as well as the 16 million-member Southern Baptist Convention and countless so-called Bible churches and mega-churches.

It's estimated that at least one out of every 10 Americans is a devotee of this cult. In both Israel and the U.S., a conspiracy of silence reigns as militants lay siege to the Jerusalem mosque. No political leader - or religious leader- in Israel or the U.S. has addressed this issue. In the case of Israeli rabbis, if they themselves have not aided and abetted planned assaults on the mosque, they have kept silent. In the case of all major U.S. Christian church leaders - the voices that are heard throughout the land- if they themselves are not raising money to destroy the mosque, they keep silent about the conspiracy...

While they are certain there will be a great Tribulation--of wars ending in a final war--they are brainwashed to believe they won't suffer a moment of agony. As Jerry Falwell puts it, "I'm not worried. You know why? I ain't gonna be here."

These cult members look like your average next-door neighbors. They attend a variety of Protestant churches, including those known as charismatic. They are rife among the 16-million-member Southern Baptist Convention. They also are members of so-called Bible churches and mega-churches, such as those attended by Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr in McLean, Virginia, and Congressman Tom DeLay in Sugarland, a suburb of Houston.

One of every ten Americans is a member of this cult. By praying for their Rapture and the End of Time, might they force the hand of God--to bring it about?

Forcing God's Hand was Grace Halsell's last book. Her death occurred in 2000, less than a year after its publication and shortly before now Israel Prime Minister Sharon intently provokes a crisis and new "Intifada" by going to the "Temple Mount" with soldiers.

This image of the grander "Greater Israel" is the only one presently on a Zionist site in English.
