The concerns are being voiced in the wake of last week's community-council elections in Crown Heights, where potential leaders were anointed in the name of the Rebbe, who died in June. Invoking the Rebbe, members of the Crown Heights' bet din, or rabbinical court, became players in the election, issuing formal recommendations as to which slate of candidates to support.
Distorting Judaism
The community's turmoil has to do not only with who shall preside over Lubavitch in the messianic era, but also with who shall preside over them in the Republican era -- specifically, who shall reign over the multimillion dollar real estate properties, schools and institutions that make up the wealth of Lubavitch. In any event, the situation has reached the point where some rabbinical authorities, including a Chicago-based sage, Aaron Soloveichik, as well as other rabbis and scholars, fear that the Lubavitchers have crossed a line and are distorting fundamental tenets of Judaism.
Unraveling the threads of the latest news from Lubavitch starts with the victory of the incumbent community-council president, Rabbi Joseph Spielman, who has been prominent among the group advancing the notion of the Rebbe as Messiah. The man who wields much of the power, Rabbi Yehudah Krinsky, the Rebbe's former driver and chief of staff, has been considerably more low-key about the supposed "second coming" of Schneerson. In the elections, Rabbi Krinsky was known to be close to some of the individuals who lost.
Rabbi Shmuel Menachem Butman, his arch-nemesis, chortled that the community's vote for individuals such as Rabbi Spielman reflects the popular will that only people supporting the notion of the Rebbe as the next Messiah would remain in control. Rabbi Butman, who has chaired the International Campaign to Bring Moshiach, insists that "it is not some of the people in the community, but all of the people in the community as well as Lubavitch throughout the world, who believe...that the Rebbe will take us out of exile, and that the Rebbe will lead us to the great final redemption." Rabbi Krinsky could not be reached for comment.
Yet, as the Jews of Crown Heights continue to mourn the loss of Schneerson, memories of the Rebbe's long and poignant illness, his evident suffering and the months he spent in a hospital intensive-care unit make him ripe for martyrdom and are giving him, critics warn, a strangely Christ-like cast. Some scholars are urging that the Jewish world issue a clear condemnation of the latest development as being absolutely contrary to halacha. There is also the fear that the movement will make it easier for evangelists to function.
"Repugnant"
"I don't believe it. I don't believe it. It is incredible," Rabbi Soloveichik exclaimed when informed of the words of Rabbi Butman and others in Crown Heights about the imminent return of the Rebbe as Moshiach. The world-renowned rabbi said flatly that "there is no possibility whatsoever" that Menachem Mendel Schneerson would emerge from the dead to be the Messiah. "That could be possible in the Christian faith, but not Judaism."
Jewish texts, prominent rabbis and scholars say, suggest the Messiah will come from the ranks of the living. Rabbi Soloveichik added that the mere suggestion that a dead individual would return as Moshiach is "repugnant to everything Judaism represents."
Rabbi Butman, one of the leading messianists during the Rebbe's lifetime, was adamant, however. In an interview with the Forward shortly before he went to Manhattan to light the Chanukah menorah, he said defiantly: "We believe that the Rebbe is Moshiach and we say it."
Dangerous Ground
Rabbi Soloveichik, however, was contemptuous, denouncing Rabbi Butman as "a little fanatical," someone who "means well but, out of desperation, conjures non-rational ideas." The late Rebbe, said Rabbi Soloveichik, "can't be the Messiah -- he is not living -- a Messiah has to be living -- a living Messiah, not a dead Messiah."
Still, the idea of Schneerson's return has caught on. Interviews of Lubavitch women conducted by the Forward yielded virtually the same response: the Rebbe is coming back. Basha Oka, a Crown Heights resident, said "the reporters who are most receptive are not Jewish," while another, Rosalynn Malamud, whose husband was among those elected, said it was easier to explain the ideas to Christian friends. For Ms. Oka, very simply, "The Rebbe is still here."
Several critics believe that the Lubavitch community is treading on dangerous ground, and that the Jewish community at large must act immediately to put a stop to practices and beliefs that are at odds with fundamental Jewish tenets.
David Berger, a professor at Brooklyn College and City University of New York and a noted Orthodox scholar of messianic movements, said he was deeply disturbed by what he was witnessing among the Lubavitch. "I will withhold the word heresy because it is he strongest word that can be used in the context of Judaism," Mr. Berger said of the belief in Schneerson's resurrection as Messiah, "but I am perfectly willing to say this is a thoroughly illegitimate position within Judaism."
Mr. Berger said that while he was disturbed by the sect's messianism when the Rebbe was alive, he was willing to accept it because of the good works Lubavitch was doing the world over rescuing lost Jewish communities. "Once he died, to continue to maintain this position seems to be so unacceptable...that it is the obligation of every Jewish leader to say in no uncertain terms that this is not a position that will be tolerated within Judaism.
"The persistence of such a claim is beyond the pale -- the movement will destroy its legitimacy," Mr. Berger predicted.
`Closer to Christianity'
Mr. Berger, a student of Jewish-Christian relations, raised another disturbing prospect, namely, that the new teachings of Lubavitch would make it easier for Christian missionaries to get Jewish converts. "Does this make the job of missionaries easier? The answer is, absolutely, because one of the fundamental Jewish arguments in response to Christian missionary efforts was that Jesus could not be the Messiah because he died before redeeming the world." By saying the late Rebbe is Messiah "aborts" the standard Jewish response, Mr. Berger said.

One longtime critic of Lubavitch, Rabbi Allen Nadler of YIVO, sees the recent developments as yet further evidence that the sect is deviant from traditional Judaism and ought to be shunned as dangerous. "I am a lot more detached ever since the Rebbe died. Before, I felt that Lubavitch had a place in the table of Jewish discourse. But now, they are closer to Christianity in their way of thinking," Rabbi Nadler told the Forward.
"All of my animus aside," Rabbi Nadler, an ordained Orthodox rabbi, added, "it is very clear from all the Jewish sources since Christianity that talk about messianism that the idea of death and the rebirth of a Messiah is contrary to Judaism." Indeed, he argues, "There is...a strong history of opposition to the belief in a resurrected Messiah."
Rabbi Soloveichik offered Lubavitch a consoling piece of advice, urging them to appoint for themselves a new Rebbe who could lead the community -- "They should appoint someone, if they don't it will be very damaging," he said with emotion.

Lubavitch Hasidism, most commonly presented through its organizational arm, Chabad, is an international movement with headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York.
The Chabad-Lubavitch movement formed from the writings of Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, who published the Tanya, in 1796. The Tanya contains the key to Jewish mystical and spiritual awareness, according to Chabadnicks. Following Schneur Zalman, there have been seven other Lubavitcher Rebbes, each designated by his predecessor.
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson was chosen as the seventh Lubavitcher rebbe in 1950. Schneerson, known as the Rebbe, served as the heart and soul of Chabad for 44 years, he was the spiritual leader, as well as, intellectual and organizational leader of the movement. In 1994, Schneerson, at the age of 91, died childless and with no designated successor. Chabad leadership decided that he would be the final rebbe, this decision sparked much speculation and expectation that Schneerson was the Messiah. Many felt that the Chabad movement would dwindle and collapse after his death, but just the opposite occurred.
The Lubavitch movement's infrastructure has expanded almost 30 percent since the Rebbe's death. It has become a world-wide Jewish outreach movement. More than 3,700 emissary couples work in more than 100 countries worldwide. Since 1995, more than 400 shlichim (emissaries) were assigned to new posts and more than 500 new Chabad institution have been established, bringing the total to nearly 2,600 institutions (seminaries, day camps, schools, etc) worldwide. According to headquarters, almost one million children participates in Chabad activities worldwide in 1999.
The movement's major thrust focuses on observing for one's self and transmitting to others the beauty, depth, awareness and joy inherent in the Torahtrue way of life. By doing so, it strives to revitalize Jewish life by intensifying the individual's relationship to Gd, and deep sense of devotion and love towards one's fellow man.
The name Chabad (Chochmah, Binah, Daat) refers to the three intellectual sephiros (Divine Emanations). The philosophy of the founder, the Alter Rebbe, stressed the use of the intellect to guide the emotions. Thus, each individual hasid had to work on himself/herself, rather than simply rely on the Rebbe/Tzaddik's saintliness. Another name used in Lubavitch Hasidism is ChaGat (Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferes), which refers to the first three of the seven emotional sephiros/character attributes that derive from Chabad. The emphasis in Chagat Chassidus is on emotional fervor and devotion. Consequently, a hasid must attach himself/herself to the Rebbe and let his righteousness carry the hasid along.

ChabadLubavitch operates an extensive outreach effort to encourage Jews to return to traditional practices. As part of this effort, Chabad operates the Mitzvah Campaigns to encourage Jews to perform 10 specific mitzvot, the intention being that through their fulfillment, the individual and the family will come to experience a deeper and more fulfilling relationship with their Jewish heritage. These mitzvot are:
1. Ahavas Yisroel: The love of one's fellow Jew.
2. Chinuch: Torah Education.
3. Torah Study.
4. Tefillin: The donning of Tefillin, every weekday, by men and boys over 13.
5. Mezuzah: The Jewish sign on a doorpost.
6. Tzedakah: Giving charity every weekday.
7. Possession of Jewish Holy Books.
8. Lighting Shabbat and Festival Candles.
9. Kashrut: The Jewish dietary laws.
10. Taharas Hamishpocho: The Torah perspective on married life.
Chabad also urges that efforts be made to inform the public at large about the nature and meaning of the Seven Laws of Noah.

(CHARISMA) -- Mailbox missionary efforts are coming under increasing fire from religious leaders who object to blanket distribution of an evangelistic video. They say that sending an unsolicited film of the life of Christ to every home in their communities is intrusive and insensitive.
About 10 million copies of "Jesus," based on Luke's gospel and ending with an invitation for the viewer to pray to become a Christian, have been distributed to homes across the country since 1992. Originally hand delivering them, local church networks that have taken part in the program have more recently paid to have them sent out by the U.S. Postal Service.
The mailing idea first hit trouble in May, when 400,000 copies were distributed in Palm Beach County, Fla., which has a sizeable Jewish community. Some recipients were so angry about the unrequested video that they bundled bricks with tape to increase the return shipping charges after they refused delivery. One postal worker said she had never known so many complaints in more than 20 years service.
Now the outreach has run into opposition in California and Kansas. About 1.1 million homes in San Juan Capistrano and Canyon Lake, Calif., are due to receive a copy of the video before Christmas. Rabbi David Eliezrie of Congregation Beth Meir HaCohen-Chabad Center in Westminster told "The Los Angeles Times": "While I respect the right of freedom of religion, I resent the effort of certain Christian groups to evangelize the Jewish community. And I'd prefer that they focus on their own religious brethren."
He was supported by Hussam Ayloush, executive director of the Southern California Council on American-Islamic Relations, who said: "As a person who believes in God, I don't approve of such tactics because it might offend people who don't appreciate God's message."
John Erickson, president of Interfaith of Topeka, Kan., and pastor of a local Roman Catholic church, said that he opposed the just-announced plan to send out videos to 74,000 homes in Shawnee County next year, reported "The Topeka Capital-Journal."
"I don't for a moment doubt the sincerity and good intentions of those who do such things," he said. "But I question the effectiveness of bringing people to Christ. The best way to do that is the personal living of the gospel, treating people with justice and dignity and respect."
The mailing was defended by Rich O'Brian, chairman of the organizing group. "This is an invitation to know Jesus Christ," he said. "If a person feels they've been intruded on, it's their video, and they can dispose of it any way they wish. But we feel we have a mandate to make the gospel known. They're not turning us down, they're turning Jesus down."
In California, Ron Butler, assistant pastor at Canyon Lake Community Church, said that people appreciated not having unsolicited callers at their door. "[They] can view it in the quietness of their own home. They can choose to watch it or trash it."
The video is an edited, 83-minute version of the 'Jesus" film produced 20 years ago by Campus Crusade for Christ. The movie has since been dubbed into 500 languages and viewed by more than 3.5 billion people worldwide.

The idea of Messiah is not foreign to B'nei Noach.
Considering that the overwhelming majority of B'nei Noach have emerged from Christianity, it is quite certain that the idea of a messiah, or savior, was central in our belief system. Is it possible for those of us who have emerged from Christianity to reconcile our formerly-believed Christian concept of messiah with the Jewish concept, which predates Christianity by several centuries?
Even within ka'al B'nei Noach we find individuals who still struggle to keep their belief in Jesus intact. Instead of believing in the Gentiles' Jesus, they now believe in a Jewish Jesus - and they now call him Yeshua Ha Moshiach (Yeshua the Messiah). They strip away the Christian's Anglo-Saxon garments of Jesus and redress him in a more ethnic Jewish costume. Now Yeshua is introduced as an Orthodox rabbi, complete with tzitzits, tallit, and tefillin. And by doing this to Jesus, they erroneously believe they have rectified the Church's whitewashing of a Jewish Yeshua into a figure called Jesus, and that they have restored the truth to the world.
But have they bothered to ask, "Who is the messiah that the Jews have been looking for?" No. In their struggle to keep their Jesus/Yeshua belief system intact, they have neglected to study Moshiach from the purely Jewish viewpoint. They, in fact, have long forgotten that the idea of Moshiach is an original Jewish concept. Therefore, only the remnant of Torah-observant Jews can make clear to us who Moshiach is, what his responsibilities are, where and when he will ascend the throne of kingship, why he will be crowned King Moshiach, and how all of this will come to pass.

Parshas Shoftim begins with the command to appoint judges and enforcement
officers. This reflects the emphasis on Torah activity within the world
mentioned above. The judges are, to quote the Rambam, “the essence of the Oral
Law, the pillars of instruction, from whom statutes and judgment emerge for all
of Israel.”
The
Torah relates that the judges must be positioned “in all your gates.” A gate
represents the transition between the city and the field beyond it. The
judges’ presence at the gate ensures that the activity carried out in the
field will be in accord with the Torah’s dictates.
Although
the essential obligation to appoint judges applies to Eretz Yisroel and not in
the Diaspora, nevertheless, even in the Diaspora, the mitzva to establish
a court system applies. Even in exile, where the appointment of judges is
dependent on the permission of the secular authorities, when we stand firm for
our Torah principles, the power of the Torah affects the conduct of the country
(and the entire world at large). Thus, we find the Rebbe Rayatz describing how
the Tzemach Tzedek “arranged affairs” in
Petersburg, the former capitol of Russia.
May this lead to the return of the entire Jewish people to Eretz Yisroel when, led by Moshiach, we will appoint judges and enforcement officers, including the judges of the Sanhedrin who will meet in the Chamber of Hewn Stone in the Beis HaMikdash. May in the immediate future we merit the fulfillment of the prophecy when, as related in the Yalkut Shimoni, “Moshiach will stand on the roof of the Beis HaMikdash and proclaim, ‘Humble ones. It is argued in the name of Rabbi Akiva that all relationships that warrant the death penalty in a Jewish court of law also will receive the death penalty in a Gentile court of law. This includes a relationship that exists through marriage (i.e. mother-in-law or daughter-in-law). The reason is that since one& one's father& one's wife is forbidden and this is a relationship that came about through marriage, we extrapolate and say that all relatives that are related through marriage are forbidden and such relationships are punishable by the courts. Others say that only the father& son's wife is in this forbidden category and they exclude other relatives through marriage.

10. In times when there was slavery, if a Noahide man designated a specific female slave for his male slave, and then had relations with her, he was killed because of it. She was considered another man's wife. However, the master was not condemned until it had become public knowledge that such and such a slave had been given to each other. And when did she become permissible again? When she separated from his slave and uncovered her head in the marketplace (i.e. demonstrates publicly that she is available to any man).
11. The concept of divorce with regard to Noahides is a matter of dispute. One opinion holds that there is no divorce possible. (The Ran) Another opinion states that there is no writ of divorce necessary, rather that divorce is dependent solely on the volition of either spouse, even if the other is against the divorce. In response to the deadly hoax I expose in my book The Christ Conspiracy, I received from a reader a disturbing outline of what the future may hold for America, as well as for other places.This person confirms impressions I've had for years but had hoped would not come to fruition.The scenario is that the U.S. is being pushed towards a fascistic theocracy, based primarily onJudeo-Christian ideology, emulating the firm and merciless hand of Islam's mullahs and omams.Under such a fascist theocracy, books such as mine would be banned and burned, and freethinkers such as I would be jailed or executed. The Noahide Laws would be followed to the letter, as would many others found in the Bible, including capital punishment for sexual deviation; such as homosexuality.
Naturally, putting people to death for blaspheming the Name of the Omnipotent, who could not possibly be harmed by such measly assaults, would NOT constitute murder. Nor would it be murder to slaughter entire cultures (genocide) in that very same sacrosanct Name, as is the behavior of the "chosen" people depicted throughout the Old Testament. Such murder, as long as it is done by the group who makes up the rules, is perfectly acceptable. Under this law, doctors who perform abortions, along with their nurses and the patients themselves, could also be put to death, in effect murdering real, living breathing humans to protect the nebulous unborn.
Such legislation is indicative of what the future holds, i.e., a fascist theocracy, in which the death penalty would be wielded freely. I ask the readers to examine their belief systems, especially those promulgated by the monolithic religions such as Judeo-Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Each of these ideologies is despotic and designed as a method to control the masses, as well as to pit them against each other. While many people are becoming hip to the numerous political conspiracies, they likewise need to realize that the scoundrels who are manipulating and exploiting them politically are the SAME puppetmasters behind the world's organized religions. The first Noahide Law--Avodah Zorah--commands that people, who are the
weakest of creatures--believe in and worship only One G-d: "The essence of
life, however, is to recognize the Supreme Being who created the Universe--to
believe in Him and accept His laws with awe and love." This law is based on
the theory that man's existence is dependent on G-d, so we owe him our alliance.
G-d enforces this rule by observing everybody's behavior, and rewarding the good
while punishing the bad. Bad behavior "perverts the purpose of life,"
and releases the untold forces of evil we and the world possess. It, therefore,
both benefits humankind and protects us from the vast and dominating forces of
life and death that encompass us by serving G-d.

The second Noahide Law--Birchat HaShem--is not to blaspheme G-d. In
Genesis 4:26 it says, "It was then that men began to invoke the Lord by

fear G-d, pray to G-d, sanctify G-d's name, study torah, honor scholars and not
desecrate G-d's name.
Yet the Sofiet Talmudic Bolshevik Red SAYERS seek to murder all Christians
As the story of Cain and Abel illustrates, people are capable of committing
inhumane actions against others; thus, reinforcing that humankind really is
his/hers brother's/sister's keepers. The third Noahide Law--Shefichas Domim--instructs
people to resist the inert bestial tendencies we all have by not committing acts
of murder. In more traditional Jewish practices, this includes prohibiting
abortion as well. One who breaks this law violates the sanctity of human life,
and, as a result, attacks G-d "who created us in His image."
The third Noahide Law is simple, for it only contains one of the sixty-six
total laws:
In Genesis 2:24 we see a prohibition against adultery: "Hence a man
leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, so that they become one
flesh." This is not meant to be taken in the physical sense but in a
spiritual matter. Adultery is the murder of the spirit. This Noahide law
prohibits illicit intercourse such as incest, adultery, bestiality or homosexual
relationships. In more detail, this Noahide law prohibits a man having union
with his mother, having union with his sister, having union with the wife of his
father and having union with another man's wife. It also prohibits (a man or
woman) copulating with a beast, a man lying carnally with his father's brother
and engaging in erotic conduct that may lead to a prohibited union. Homosexual
relationships are not necessarily shunned by progressive Judaism today.
People earn their sustenance from God. The fifth Noahide Law-- Gezel--asserts
that we need to earn our sustenance honestly and with dignity: "To violate
the property of others, by robbing or cheating, is a fundamental attack on their
humanity." Genesis 2:16 describes how Adam and Eve sinned by stealing the
fruit from the tree of knowledge of good and bad: "And the L-rd G-d
commanded the man, saying, of every tree of the garden you are free to eat; but
as far as the tree of knowledge of good and bad, you must not eat it; for as
soon as you eat of it, you shall die." Such violations encourage anarchy
which lowers humankind into the bowls of selfishness and cruelty. The flood that
Noah successfully braved validates the predicted outcomes if this law is
violated.
Sixteen of the sixty-six total laws are dedicated to Gezel:
The sixth Noahide Law--Dinim--instructs against both eating the limb
severed from a living animal and eating the flesh of any animal which was torn
by a wild beast. Of all the Noahide laws, it is the one most explicitly
mentioned in Scripture as a prohibition of Noah and his descendants:
"Surely (flesh) with it life-blood you shall net eat" (Genesis 9:4).
This law measures how well the other six laws are being observed. When humankind
fulfills his/her potential, the world will be transformed into a place where G-d
can dwell.

tractate Sanhedrin over whether a Noachide is liable for execution for stealing
less than a pruta. Some rabbis are of the opinion that they are liable, others
that they are not. Page 57a of Sanhedrin, according to the interpretation of
Chaim Clorfene and Yakov Rogalsky, declares that an object worth even less than
a pruta must be returned to a Noachide. However, they admit that there is some
debate as to whether a Noachide who stole such an object must return it to a
fellow Noachide.12 Rambam states that even for that small amount a
Noachide is executed.13 Rabbi Bindman agrees with Rambam in this,
stating that "non-Jews are liable for theft no matter what the articles
they steal..."14

The seventh and final Noachide Law requires that Noachide societies set up courts to ensure obedience to the other six laws--this usually being based upon the incident with Shechem where the city provided no justice after the rape of Dinah. Additionally, some are of the opinion that this law allows Noachide communities to make other laws that their society needs, provided they do not conflict with the first 6 laws above. Rabbi Katz (of a Noachide e-mail list) states that while they may be allowed to make such laws, it is questionable "whether a penalty can be assessed against those who fail to obey these laws." R. Bindman says, "In criminal cases the basic code of law for non-Jewish states consists of the Seven Laws themselves, but in civil matters non-Jews are not required to follow the law of the Torah as laid down in the book of Exodus, chapters 21-23. They make their own laws as they see fit, in accordance with equitable principles, and appoint their own judges to settle cases according to the particular need of each nation. The only requirement in civil matters is that they allow Jews to live according to the full extent of Torah law without being judge in any other way."16 Rabbi Katz states that Rabbi Bindman is agreeing with one opinion on the matter, and Rabbi Katz himself is not willing to side with one opinion in this matter over the other. He would prefer to see that a rabbi with the stature and authority of Rambam, R. Caro, R.. Feinstein, or R. Auerbach resolve this dispute of the Rishonim one way or the other. Until then, he is of the opinion that Noachides cannot legislate even in civil matters. It is possible, however, for Noachides to compromise on civil matters, going through mediation or arbitration, according to Clorfene and Rogalsky.17

The Talmud Nullifies the Bible
The Jewish Scribes claim the Talmud is partly a collection of traditions Moses gave them in oral form. These had not yet been written down in Jesus' time. Christ condemned the traditions of the Mishnah (early Talmud) and those who taught it (Scribes and Pharisees), because the Talmud nullifies the teachings of the Holy Bible.
Shmuel Safrai in The Literature of the Sages Part One (p.164), points out that in chapters 4 and 5 of the Talmud's Gittin Tractate, the Talmud nullifies the Biblical teaching concerning money-lending: "Hillel decreed the prozbul for the betterment of the world. The prozbul is a legal fiction which allows debts to be collected after the Sabbatical year and it was Hillel's intention thereby to overcome the fear that money-lenders had of losing their money."
The famous warning of Jesus Christ about the tradition of men that voids Scripture (Mark 7:1-13), is in fact, a direct reference to the Talmud, or more specifically, the forerunner of the first part of it, the Mishnah, which existed in oral form during Christ's lifetime, before being committed to writing. Mark chapter 7, from verse one through thirteen, represents Our Lord's pointed condemnation of the Mishnah.
Unfortunately, due to the abysmal ignorance of our day, the widespread "Judeo-Christian" notion is that the Old Testament is the supreme book of Judaism. But this is not so. The Pharisees teach for doctrine the commandments of rabbis, not God.
The Talmudic commentary on the Bible is their supreme law, and not the Bible itself. That commentary does indeed, as Jesus said, void the laws of God, not uphold them. As students of the Talmud, we know this to be true.
Jewish scholar Hyam Maccoby, in Judaism on Trial, quotes Rabbi Yehiel ben Joseph: "Further, without the Talmud, we would not be able to understand passages in the Bible...God has handed this authority to the sages and tradition is a necessity as well as scripture. The Sages also made enactments of their own...anyone who does not study the Talmud cannot understand Scripture."
There is a tiny Jewish sect which makes considerable effort to eschew Talmud and adhere to the Old Testament alone. These are the Karaites, a group which, historically, has been most hated and severely persecuted by orthodox Jewish rabbinate.
To the Mishnah the rabbis later added the Gemara (rabbinical commentaries). Together these comprise the Talmud. There are two versions, the Jerusalem Talmud and the Babylonian Talmud.
The Babylonian Talmud is regarded as the authoritative version: "The authority of the Babylonian Talmud is also greater than that of the Jerusalem Talmud. In cases of doubt the former is decisive." Gloats over Christ Dying Young
A passage from Sanhedrin 106 gloats over the early age at which Jesus died: "Hast thou heard how old Balaam (Jesus) was?--He replied: It is not actually stated but since it is written, Bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days it follows that he was thirty-three or thirty-four years old."

Horrible Blasphemies Against Jesus Christ
While it is the standard disinformation practice of apologists for the Talmud to deny that it contains any scurrilous references to Jesus Christ, certain Orthodox Jewish organizations are more forthcoming and admit that the Talmud not only mentions Jesus but disparages him (as a sorcerer and a demented sex freak). These orthodox Jewish organizations make this admission perhaps out of the belief that Jewish supremacy is so well-established in the modern world that they need not concern themselves with adverse reactions.
For example, on the website of the Orthodox Jewish Hasidic Lubavitch group--one of the largest in the world--we find the following statement, complete with Talmudic citations:
"The Talmud (Babylonian edition) records other sins of 'Jesus the Nazarene':
1) He and his disciples practiced sorcery and black magic, led Jews astray into idolatry, and were sponsored by foreign, gentile powers for the purpose of subverting Jewish worship (Sanhedrin 43a).
2) He was sexually immoral, worshipped statues of stone (a brick is mentioned), was cut off from the Jewish people for his wickedness, and refused to repent (Sanhedrin 107b; Sotah 47a).
3) He learned witchcraft in Egypt and, to perform miracles, used procedures that involved cutting his flesh, which is also explicitly banned in the Bible (Shabbos 104b).

Gittin 57a. Says Jesus is in hell, being boiled in "hot excrement."
Sanhedrin 43a. Says Jesus ("Yeshu" and in Soncino footnote #6, Yeshu "the Nazarene") was executed because he practiced sorcery: "It is taught that on the eve of Passover Jesus was hung, and forty days before this the proclamation was made: Jesus is to be stoned to death because he has practiced sorcery and has lured the people to idolatry...He was an enticer and of such thou shalt not pity or condone."
Kallah 51a."The elders were once sitting in the gate when two young lads passed by; one covered his head and the other uncovered his head. Of him who uncovered his head Rabbi Eliezer remarked that he is a bastard. Rabbi Joshua remarked that he is the son of a niddah (a child conceived during a woman's menstrual period). Rabbi Akiba said that he is both a bastard and a son of a niddah.
"They said, 'What induced you to contradict the opinion of your colleagues?' He replied, "I will prove it concerning him." He went to the lad's mother and found her sitting in the market selling beans.
"He said to her, 'My daughter, if you will answer the question I will put to you, I will bring you to the world to come.' (eternal life). She said to him, 'Swear it to me.'
"Rabbi Akiba, taking the oath with his lips but annulling it in his heart, said to her, 'What is the status of your son?' She replied, 'When I entered the bridal chamber I was niddah (menstruating) and my husband kept away from me; but my best man had intercourse with me and this son was born to me.' Consequently the child was both a bastard and the son of a niddah.
"It was declared, '..Blessed be the God of Israel Who Revealed His Secret to Rabbi Akiba..."
In addition to the theme that God rewards clever liars, the preceding Talmud
discussion is actually about Jesus

Christ, Blessed Mary (called Miriam and sometimes, Miriam the hairdresser, in

This week's Torah portion names the leaders of the family of Esauv. The two leaders of the house of Edom were Magdiel, and Eerum. The exile in which we now find ourselves is called the exile of Edom. Rabbi Sholom Yehuda Gross, the head of the Rabbinical court of Holmin, showed the Rebbe quotes form many Holy books that Moshiach was being held up because of lack of observance in the laws of ritual slaughter and other things.

In addition, the Jews' exile in Egypt differed from future ones in that all Jews were involved. Later exiles found Jews scattered all over the world, assuring that whenever Jews were discriminated against in one country there were other lands in which they enjoyed relative freedom, and could come to the aid of their brethren. Furthermore, Egypt itself was a land that posed particular difficulties. Not only was it spiritually corrupt, but our Sages describe it as a fortified country from which not even one slave could escape. This first and most difficult exile served one positive purpose--to act as preparation for the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. Egypt was the crucible in which the Jewish nation was purified and made worthy of the Torah. We learn this from the Hebrew name for Egypt, "Mitzrayim," which comes from the word meaning "limitation" and "constriction." When water's flow is artificially blocked by placing an obstruction in its path, the water flows even more forcefully because of the temporary impasse. When one's thumb is held over the tap to partially obstruct the flow, the water shoots out that much more forcefully from the faucet. Such is the Divine purpose of our exile, to uncover within every Jew the hidden strengths and stores of faith that are in the Jewish soul. The difficulties and pressures of the exile cause these inner qualities and self- sacrifice to be revealed. The experience of exile can be used for our maximum benefit--to strengthen our commitment to Torah and mitzvot. Just as the Jews eventually left Egypt victorious and with "great wealth," and were worthy of receiving the Torah, may we be worthy to usher in the Messianic era, now. The seven Noahide laws were voted into American law as a joint resolution
(resolution # 104) of United States Congress on March 20, 1991 and became
public law 102-14 (102 P. L. Res. 104;105 Stat. 44; establishing March 26,
1991 as Education Day, U. S. A.) It was sneaked into law under the disguise
of wishing happy 89th birthday to the late false messiah, Rabbi Menachem
Mendel Schneerson, leader of the Jewish Lubavich (Talmudic-Cabalist)
movement. The law was signed by Robert Foley, Speaker of the House, Robert
Byrd, President protem of the Senate, and President George Bush.
In the July-August 1991 issue of the Gap, a newsletter published by the
Noahide movement, Ernest Easterly, Professor of International Law at
Southern University Law Center, made the following statement:
"With further recognition by other nations and international courts, the
Seven Noahide Laws should become the cornerstone of a truly civilized
international legal order." Below is Public Law 102-14 [HJ Res. 104] March

The Noahide Laws are an invention by Talmudic Rabbis as a means of
conversion of Gentiles to Phariseeism. Remember, Talmudism is just a new
name for Phariseeism. Remember also that all of today's Judaism among Jews
is still PHARISEEISM. They claim this in all of their books on theology. The
Seven Noahide Laws are a Pharisee invention. Scriptures for the proof these
seven Noahide Laws were used to convert Gentiles through this evangelism
device, cannot be found in all of the Bible. An effort by Rabbis claiming
these began with Noah and all Gentile converts to Judaism since that time
followed these laws after conversion, is not found anywhere in the
Scriptures. The entire purpose of the Noahide laws is against Christianity
and Jesus Messiah. Therefore, there is no salvation in them. Salvation is
not in Jewish or Gentile creeds and the Seven Noahide Laws are a Pharisee
Creed or some Talmudic Law, and Christians are not bound by either.
Salvation is not by works of man or faith in Jewish Creeds even if based
upon the Old Testament since the entire Old Testament as a Covenant has been
replaced by the New Covenant. Salvation is by grace through faith in the
person of Jesus Messiah and his finished work of redemption on Calvary.
Observing or keeping the Noahide Laws for salvation under Pharisee Talmudic
Judaism is therefore antichrist conduct.
1.) Thou shalt not engage in idol worship.
2.) Thou shalt not blaspheme God.
3.) Thou shalt not shed innocent blood of any human nor fetus nor ailing
person who has a limited time to live.
4.) Thou shalt not engage in bestial, incestuous, adulterous, or homosexual
relations nor commit the act of rape.
5.) Thou shalt not steal
6.) Thou shalt establish laws and courts of law to administer these laws,
including the death penalty for those who kill, administered only if there
is one testifying eyewitness.
7.) Thou shalt not be cruel to animals. (See the Institute of

On the face these appear to be innocent enough. However, according to the
Jewish interpretation of #1, idol worship includes having any emblem that
might identify Christ. Jesus Christ is considered an idol by both Jews and
Moslems. He is accepted as a man by Jews and Moslems, but if anyone prays to
Jesus, worships Jesus, praises Jesus, both Jews and Moslems believe that
person has committed the worship of an idol, a death penalty offense.
Technically, every Christian on earth would be guilty of idolatry, and
deserving the death penalty. You will also notice in #6, that all it takes
is one eyewitness. This violates the Biblical necessity of having two
witness.
They could not find two witnesses in the trial against Jesus, and they don=t
want that mistake to ever happen again. So they are going to establish one
witness to obtain a death penalty, who could also be a lying witness, as
they manufactured in the trial against Jesus. In Talmudic Law, two witnesses
are not necessary for a death penalty conviction, if a prisoner is provoked
or coerced into making what might be construed as a statement of confession.
Sometimes they would bring a victim in and hide witnesses behind a wall.
They would befriend the victim to get him to blab his mouth. As soon as they
obtained the words from the victim they thought would produce a death
penalty offense, the witnesses would spring from behind the wall and reveal
themselves. If a person refused to talk, answer questions, or engage in
response to being pushed around or mistreated, a death penalty conviction
would require two eyewitnesses separate from that they could not extract
from the victim. Jesus told us when this time came to not think what we
would say, but wait for the Spirit to give us the words to say in that hour.
Jesus knew that he could preserve his servants in this manner, because in
that hour the Spirit would give them nothing to say. Thus, they would never
be trapped into self incrimination. You will recall that Jesus answered them
not, and they became insolent and irritated. When Jesus did speak, you will
notice how quickly that the High Priest tore his clothes off and screamed,
they had no need of further witnesses:
MAR 14:61 But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest
asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
MAR 14:62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on
the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
MAR 14:63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any
further witnesses?
When Jesus confessed he was the Christ (Messiah), which they considered a
death penalty offense, then the Jews stopped the trial and called for
immediate execution.
One may see in the Noahide Laws, that if a victim refused to testify or say
a word that might be considered self incriminating, that if one witness can
be manufactured to lie, then the victim is executed anyway.
How could any Apostolic ever support the diabolical plotting behind the
precepts of the Noahide laws, to the destruction of the New Testament, the
Church, and the killing of the saints of God?
Least you feel I am making a big to-do about nothing, the seven Noahide laws
were voted into American law as a joint resolution (resolution # 104) of
United States Congress on March 20, 1991 and became public law
102-14 (102 P. L. Res. 104;105 Stat. 44; establishing March 26, 1991 as
AEducation Day, U. S. A.) It was sneaked into law under the disguise of
wishing happy 89th birthday to the late false messiah, Rabbi Menachem Mendel
Schneerson, leader of the Jewish Lubavich (Talmudic-Cabalist) movement. The
law was signed by Robert Foley, Speaker of the House, Robert Byrd, President
protem of the Senate, and President George Bush.
In the July-August 1991 issue of the Gap, a newsletter published by the
Noahide movement, Ernest Easterly, Professor of International Law at
Southern University Law Center, made the following statement:
"With further recognition by other nations and international courts, the
Seven Noahide Laws should become the cornerstone of a truly civilized=
international legal order."
In the same paper, Rabbi Michael Katz said that there were an additional 30
laws that the B=nai Noah (sons of Noah) would be obligated to keep, the
transgression of which is punished by execution.
The entire New Testament is to be replaced by the seven Noahide laws.
Salvation in Christ is totally abolished and it would be a death penalty to
witness to another about Calvary or even to believe in Jesus for salvation.
In establishing the Noahide Laws, any reference to the name of Jesus Christ
and Christianity are to be blotted out of public view in all cities, towns,
streets, highways, buildings, schools, and universities. If any of these
bear what may be considered a Christian name, or that of Jesus Christ, that
name must be changed.
The focus now is Crosses, Christmas displays on public property, prayer in
school, the Bible cast out of school, violation of civil rights to witness
to a non-Christian on the job, prayer or mention of Jesus at high school
graduations, etc. etc. but more cleansing of Christ from the public in

The statement has been made: AIf it is an empty gesture, why are the Jews

Noahide laws@? In his book AThe Miracle On Main Street,@ by F. Tupper
Saussy, page 139, he enjoins the world to adopt the Noahide laws:
"These instructions, found first in the Babylonian Talmud
(Sanhedrin 56-60) Are addressed first to Adam, then to Noah; they have
become known as The Noahide Laws. . . .You may wonder, as I have, why the
Noahide Laws are nowhere found in the Bible. I have no explanation."
They are not identified in the Bible as such Mr. Saussy, because God did not
give them to Adam or Noah as such, nor to be interpreted privately, as a
secret goal to replace the New Testament. That they are first found in the
Talmud, speaks enough to any man of intelligence, that they were fabricated
as a scheme to destroy Christianity. The Noahide laws exclude the Gentiles
from an equality with Jews. In Christ, the Jew and Gentile are equal, and
neither has an advantage or superiority over the other. The mere existence
of the Noahide Laws places the Jew in a superior position and gives them an
advantage over Gentiles, by forcing Gentiles to join the Talmudic Jewish
religion or be killed.
Men of God, I urge you to rise up again and preach the Gospel as never
before. Preach boldly that NOTHING can disannul it, correct it, add to it,
replace it, or be equal to it. There is no other Gospel by which we or the
world must be saved. We may admit that certain provisions of the Noahide
Laws do exist in the Bible. However, it is not the mere existence of them
that is here the issue. The issues are the loss of religious freedom and
forced compliance to 37 laws of the old Covenant on penalty of death if one
refuses; If the old Covenant is the forced religion of antichrist, even many
Oneness Brethren would deny Christ and go back under the Law for salvation.

Answer: The scriptures clearly tell us that Jesus is the seed (Galatians 3:16), and all who have faith in Him are "of Abraham's seed." What a Shock the Truth Is to Many!
Now, some of you, at this moment, considering these scriptures, may be in a state of shock. This isn't at all what you have been taught by the false teachers and by the biggest names in the Christian establishment, is it? This probably isn't what your pastor teaches from the pulpit, either. Beware of Jewish Fables
Still just can't believe that God does not favor one physical race over another? Remember, the Apostle Paul duly warned us to not give "heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn the truth." (Titus 1:14)
So, regarding the subject of "Who are God's Chosen?," let us once again leave the realm of Jewish fables and move straight to the reality of God's inerrant Word. Peter, in his first epistle, wrote to the Christians "scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadaocia, Asia, and Bithynia" (I Peter 1:1). He reminded Christians that we are "born again" of incorruptible seed (yes—through faith we are Abraham's seed, as the apostle Paul also explained in Galatians 3:26-29).
Peter declared that because of our trust in Christ Jesus, Christian believers are God's chosen and are a holy nation.

Christians A Holy Nation
Wow! Christians, said Peter, born again in Christ Jesus, are His "chosen." We are God's chosen! Peter says, too, that as Christians, we are a "holy nation."
Elsewhere in scripture, Christians are identified as the "Israel of God." By authority of the Word of God, Peter says we are "a peculiar people...the people of God."
Now, the Judaizers and their Zionist cohorts claim that it is the physical nation of Israel, a Jewish theocracy inhabited by a Christ-rejecting people, that is a holy nation. They also insist that Abraham is the father only of the physical nation-state of Israel and has no relationship to any other nation.
How deceptively wrong they are! Again, God's Word puts the lie to their racist imaginings. In Genesis 17:1-4, God tells Abraham:

So Abraham is father of many nations, not just one! But that's not all. To those racist teachers who continue to stubbornly resist God by claiming that only a physical nation of Israel and the Jews have a corner on God, I suggest they listen to what Jesus said in Matthew 21 about the prophetic fate of the Jews and the of the physical nation of Israel. After first warning that "He will miserably destroy those wicked men" who reject Him as Lord (Matthew 21:33-43), Jesus flatly stated:

Read that again: Jesus declared to the Jews, who arrogantly teach even today that the people of Israel will rule over an earthly kingdom forever, that, in fact, "The kingdom of God shall be taken from you..."

Wall of Partition Broken Down
What is wonderful is that God, in His incomparable love, has given men and women of every race on earth an opportunity to be His children. Regrettably, the Judaizers within the Christian fold, prodded along in their misdeeds by Jewish supremacists, seek to erect a wall of partition between the races. They put the Jews on one side of this wall of partition and the Gentiles on the other. They teach segregation of the two races and claim racial and spiritual superiority for the Jews. But this is an affront to God, for He has broken down the wall of partition.
God is no respecter of persons. A Gentile who becomes a Christian is no longer a Gentile, a Jew no longer a Jew. Whosoever believeth in Him is added to God's heavenly family and is made a citizen of the commonwealth of Israel:

What a lover of all mankind is our Saviour, Jesus! Once, before they were born again, Christians were of two separate types in the flesh, "Gentiles and Jews," But no longer. The blood of Jesus has changed us through faith in Him, so that all who believe in Christ Jesus, all who are born again, are now one. We are all of the commonwealth of Israel. We are together the Israel of God, the People of God. The wall between Jews and Gentiles is broken down.

I think it could be argued, though I am not enough of a historian to do so thorroughly, that the "revolutionary development" in Jewish thought and practice brought on by the Pharisees saved Judaism. After all, up until the development of Pharasitic Judaism, Judaism-in-practice was a temple centered cultic religion just like all its neighbors. The Ugarits are gone, the Moabites are gone, no one worships Ba'al, etc. But what must have seemed a bit odd at the time (likely Babylonian exile ish), the development of a basis for religion outside the focus on a temple, allowed Judaism to prosper for the thousands of years since. After all, one might argue that even 70 years in exile in Babylonia nearly did Judaism in given the relatively small numbers that moved back when the opportunity presented as well as the weak state of Judaism that they found in Israel on their return. Yet Judaism survived a subsequent exile for ~1900 years quite handily because of the changes that were made. The fact that we do not see an impact from the Saducees is because we are effectively decendents of Pharisees. Only looking back in history can one really judge the value of different approaches to Judaism. (Thus to pull from another thread, Mordechai feels that the "liberal" branches of Judaism will be gone in 50 years. He may be right, or not. I will wait the 50 years and see, instead of writing them all off now.) One could argue Darwinianly (English is great) that if the point of the entity "Judaism" is to survive, anything that enhances survival has value. Diversity clearly enhances survival in biological systems and in social systems. The fact that Abraham, Moses, or King David might not recognize what we do as the Judaism he practiced (no sacrifices! two sets of dishes? What is this mishegas) does not detract from our connection to them or the idea that we are all Jews. (A bit lehavdil but demonstrating the point, Jesus would not recognize modern Xianity. The fact that he would eat in my kosher house, but not the minister's down the block, does not make Xianity any less valid.) So the lingering effects you asked about, beyond assuming that there was cross-fertilization of ideas: The Pharisees are us, the Saducees (and that mindset) enabled Judaism to survive the period in its history that was temple-focused, the Essenes left us the Dead Sea Scrolls, from which I believe we can learn quite a bit about the development of our religion and the way texts evolve, and the Karaites probably contributed too- I just don't know enough history to say how. 8-) The key: all of them were Jews with approaches to Judaism that fit their time. No less so now. While I struggle to observe Judaism and halacha in the way that I believe is correct, I am not so sure that I know and understand what God wants for me (and from Jews) to be ready to claim that what someone else is doing is clearly wrong. When the Messiah comes, he can tell us how long our coats must be and what kind of hats to wear. 8-)

Frail Pope Falters in Address to Slovaks

BRATISLAVA (Reuters) - A frail Pope John Paul (news - web sites) arrived in Slovakia for a four-day visit on Thursday but needed help even to complete an arrival address which urged Europe to remember its Christian roots.
Hundreds of followers gathered under clear autumn skies waving banners --
many in his native Polish -- with messages of love and peace to greet the
83-year-old Roman Catholic leader as he began his 102nd trip outside Italy.
The pontiff, who suffers from Parkinson's disease (news

sites) and arthritis, has been looking exceptionally weak this summer and
trembled as he sat through a brief ceremony.
Barely audible and his voice cracking, he was unable to complete his one-page
arrival address alone and a Vatican (news
- web
sites) official continued the reading for him.
After several minutes of rest the pope then picked up the reading again and
appeared to recognize some of the Church officials he greeted afterwards.
Though a good linguist, the pope has in the past relied on other priests to
read parts of speeches in difficult languages. This time the switch appeared to
be caused instead by fatigue, as Slovak is similar to his native Polish.
"Although the pope wanted to continue to read, I think it's logical to
ease his burden," said Jaoquin Navarro-Valls, chief Vatican spokesman.
When asked if the pope's hectic trip would continue as planned, he said:
"Absolutely!"
The pope, looking pale and tired, kept to his schedule, meeting later in the
day met with Slovak President Rudolf Schuster and other leading political
figures.
CLEAR MESSAGE
If his voice was not clear, the message of the address was. It urged
Europeans to maintain Christian values, a theme he will repeat in masses across
Slovakia that will attract hundreds of thousands of people, many from
neighboring Poland.
The visit, his fourth and last foreign trip of the year, comes a month before
the 25th anniversary of his historic election and weeks before a key meeting of
EU leaders in Rome.
The European Union (news

sites), which Slovakia and 10 other mainly post-Communist nations will join
next May, is debating a draft constitution which avoids specifically mentioning
Europe's Christian traditions, as proposed by the pope and others. The document
refers instead to the continent's "cultural, religious and humanist
inheritance."
While most governments in the West follow secular norms -- divorce and
abortion are legal almost everywhere, and gay marriages are becoming more
frequent -- the character of central European states is still seen as open to
other influences.
"In the near future, your country will become a full member of the
European community. Dearly beloved, bring to the construction of Europe's new
identity the contribution of your rich Christian tradition," the pope said.
After surviving over 40 years under communism, the Catholic Church has
emerged as a moral authority in the debate on social issues in countries like
Slovakia, Poland and Croatia.
"Do not be satisfied with the sole quest for economic advantages, great
affluence in fact can also generate great poverty," the pope said.
In Slovakia, where 70 percent of the pupulation is Catholic, the church has
teamed up with the small KDH party to push for conservative policies and wields
powerful sway over the politicians, schools and police.
Navarro-Valls said the pope thanked President Schuster for recently vetoing a
law that would have allowed abortions in the second three months of pregnancy in
cases of serious genetic defects, mirroring typical legislation in western
Europe.
At the airport activists complaining that the Church discriminates against
women, gays, and those of other faiths engaged in shouting matches with the
pope's supporters.

The crisis begins
Twelve years ago, about a month after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, as the U.S. began building a coalition of nations against Saddam Hussein, one of the foremost religious voices of our generation began quoting an ancient passage of the Midrash, foretelling the events of the day.
It was Sabbath
afternoon, Aug. 18, 1990, when the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M.
Schneerson, addressed thousands of disciples at his headquarters
in Brooklyn (1). The mood in the Jewish world was stern, as Saddam pledged war
against Israel if he were attacked. The Rebbe quoted words of the Sages dating
back some 1,500 years.
"The leader of Persia," states the Midrash, "will attack an Arab nation and the Arab king will go to Aram for advice. The leader of Persia will bring destruction to the entire world, and all of the nations will be struck by panic and fear ... Israel will also be overtaken by panic and fear, and they will cry, 'Where shall we go? Where shall we go'?
"Moshiach will then tell them: 'My children, fear not. Everything I have done, I have done for you. Why are you afraid? Do not fear! The time of your liberation has arrived (2).'"
Who is Persia? Who is Aram?
A few weeks later, during the holiday of Sukkos (3) in October 1990, the Rebbe went on to explain that the Midrashic words "the leader of Persia" may be understood as "the leader of Iraq," since ancient Persia included the territory of present-day Iraq. "Aram," which in Hebrew means "exalted," or "powerful," refers to the world's superpower. Thus, "the Arab king going to Aram for advice" may represent an Arab country, Kuwait, coming to the U.S. for help (4).
"Despite the ominous situation," the Rebbe declared, "there was no reason to become confounded or fearful." On the contrary, this confrontation was heralding the time of our redemption, that moment in history when the authentic spiritual and moral core of humanity will emerge in its full splendor and heaven will become one with earth.
During the next months, the Lubavitcher Rebbe reiterated these Midrashic words numerous times, as he called on the Jewish people and the world to replace fear with courage and confusion with determination. We ought to prepare ourselves and the world at large, the Rebbe said, for the great spiritual revolution that will engulf the globe, by increasing in the study of Torah, the observance of mitzvos, and acts of goodness and kindness. Each and every one of us, the Rebbe suggested, should be teaching himself and the surrounding world about a higher way of living -- a life of ethics, honesty, goodness and peace. A life of Moshiach.
The war begins
The war began on
Wednesday, Jan. 16, 1991. A tremendous part of the fighting was concentrated
in Basra, that ancient port city off the Persian Gulf in
southern Iraq, home to the Republican Guard and, according to many, the
location of the dictator himself.
Three days later, on Sabbath, Jan. 19 (4 Shevat 5750), the Lubavitcher Rebbe devoted a large part of his public address to the war against Saddam Hussein. The Rebbe viewed Saddam - a person who chopped off the ears and noses of dissidents, tortured children in front of their parents, gassed thousands to death and craved the death of Israel - as a truly evil person.
The Rebbe saw him as a scion of the great anti-Semites of old, professing the legendary brutality and Jew-hatred of Nebuchadnezzar (ancient king of Iraq and Babylonia, arch-hero of Saddam), Amalek, Haman and Pharaoh.
The Rebbe knew very well of the ulterior motives accompanying so many American foreign-policy decisions. Yet he felt America and its values of freedom and individual liberty were a blessing for mankind, and that its war against a monstrous tyrant was a moral act, one that would save and liberate countless innocent lives.
I recall vividly how during his address on that Sabbath, the Rebbe encouraged the American armed forces to finish the job they had successfully begun. "Seventy or 80 percent of the work has been accomplished already," the Rebbe stated. "The job should be concluded 100 percent."
Moses' fear
In a fascinating discussion about fear and courage, the Rebbe discussed the opening verse of that week's Torah portion (the portion of Bo), where "G-d said to Moses: 'Come to Pharaoh (5).'"
The Zohar, one of the foundational texts of Kabbalah, writes on this passage (6):
"Now it is time to reveal secrets that are bound above and below. Why does it say, 'Come to Pharaoh'? It should have said, 'Go to Pharaoh!' But G-d brought Moses into a chamber within a chamber, to the supernal and mighty serpent from which many levels of evil evolve... Moses feared the great serpent. Moses was ready to confront the manifestations of this serpent, but not to its core. Moses was afraid to come close to its essence, because he saw that it was grounded in supernal roots."
In other words, Moses was ready to confront Pharaoh in his many forms and manifestations, but when the moment came and Moses was called to face that ruler's core-evil in his innermost chamber, even the great Moses was overtaken by fear. Thus, G-d needed to reassure Moses and say to him, "Come to Pharaoh." You are not going alone, I am coming with you.
G-d in Basra
As the address continued, the Rebbe went on to discuss the tremendous significance of the fact that the center of the fighting took place in southern Iraq, in the city of Basra. He quoted a verse form the Prophet Isaiah, foretelling the events of the ultimate redemption (7):
"Who is this coming
from Edom, with sullied garments from Basra?" is the question an
anonymous onlooker asks G-d when he sees G-d returning as a warrior from the
battlefield of Basra.
"I soiled my garments [in My war against evil in Basra]," G-d responds, "for a day of vengeance is in My heart and the year of my redemption has come."
According to many Talmudic sources, the city discussed by Isaiah in this prophecy is located in Babylonia, or present-day Iraq (8). This means G-d was saying that He Himself will be confronting the evil in Basra, just as G-d promised Moses that He Himself would join Him in confronting the evil of Pharaoh (9).
The Rebbe, apparently comparing Saddam to Pharaoh, was speaking of the courage required to confront the tyrant of Iraq face-to-face and subdue him.
The Rebbe concluded by
assuring the Jews living in Israel that they would be
safe and secure. "There will be no war in Israel," the Rebbe stated.
"Israel is the safest place in the world."
Indeed, despite Iraq launching 39 Scud missiles at Israel, not one death could be contributed directly to those attacks.
A strange instruction
During that time, I had the privilege of working as one of the oral scribes of the Rebbe, reviewing and transcribing his public talks for publication. That night, I received a telephone call from one of the Rebbe's secretaries, Rabbi Laibel Groner, who instructed me, in the name of the Rebbe, not to publish the segment of the talk that dealt with the U.S. war against Iraq.
The Rebbe had told his secretary at the time, that "these words will be applicable at a future time (10)."
As we all remember, the first Persian Gulf war ended only a few weeks after it began. On Thursday, Feb. 28, 1991, Saddam withdrew completely from Kuwait and a cease-fire was declared. The end of the war coincided with Purim, the day in which we celebrate the victory of the Jewish people against another tyrant and mass killer by the name of Haman who lived in that region some 2,400 years ago.
Two days later, on Sabbath, the 16th day of Adar 5751 (March 2, 1991) the Rebbe blessed the American government and its armed forces. He spoke of the U.S. as "a nation of generosity," allowing and encouraging Jews to live Jewishly in full freedom and prosperity. The Rebbe expressed a heartfelt prayer "that the American troops succeed in their mission in Basra (11)."
This last statement at the time was extremely perplexing. Did the Rebbe not know that the war had ended? Was the Rebbe unaware of the fact that the troops had withdrawn from Basra and from the rest of Iraq? After all, the Rebbe himself had predicted that the war would be over by Purim! Why, two days later, was the Rebbe praying for the success of an American campaign in Basra?
12 years later...
The answer to this question I received this week.
Twelve years later to the day the Rebbe delivered that prayer on the 16th of Adar 5763, the U.S. and its allies declared war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq. By the end of the day, our troops were at the outskirts of Basra.
Forty-eight hours
earlier, on the eve of Purim, the same night in which the
first Persian Gulf war ended, President Bush declared:
"Many Iraqis can
hear me tonight in a translated radio broadcast, and I have
a message for them: If we must begin a military campaign, it will be directed
against the lawless men who rule your country and not against you. As our
coalition takes away their power, we will deliver the food and medicine you
need. We will tear down the apparatus of terror and we will help you to build
a new Iraq that is prosperous and free. In free Iraq there will be no more
wars of aggression against your neighbors, no more poison factories, no more
executions of dissidents, no more torture chambers and
rape rooms.
"The tyrant will soon be gone. The day of your liberation is near."
The day of our liberation, too, is near.
