Exclusive: PM asked Ovadia to back Oslo referendum in '93

The day after the Oslo accords were signed on September 13th, 1993, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, then a Likud lawmaker, visited Shas mentor Rabbi Ovadia Yosef and asked him to support a referendum on Oslo, The Jerusalem Post has learned. Rabbi Yosef declined the request.

Asked by the Post on Wednesday about the 1993 meeting with Yosef, Sharon said, "It doesn't matter what happened over ten years ago. Things have changed since then."

Despite his decade-old advocacy of the method, when it comes to his disengagement plan the prime minister unwaveringly opposes a national referendum. Sharon resolutely told reporters in the Knesset Wednesday, "There will be no referendum. The public supports the disengagement plan. People who want a referendum argue it would ease tensions in the nation, but the opposite is true. It would cause horrible incitement and bring about increased tensions."

Earlier Wednesday, Knesset Speaker Reuven Riviln announced his support for a referendum on disengagement, reversing his earlier stance against such a move on the grounds that it would harm the sovereignty of the Knesset.

Rivlin explained his change of mind, saying that he had come to the conclusion that the Knesset would not head for new elections over the issue and that a referendum was "the lesser of two evils." Further, he said, he would rather harm the status of the Knesset than cause civil war.

In reaction, Yahad MK Zehava Galon called for Rivlin's resignation, saying, "He has hurt the Knesset's dominion and de-legitimized its decisions and the nation's parliamentary system."

Rivlin responded by saying that if there were a "serious request" for him to step down, he would have to consider whether the time had indeed come for him to do so.

Prime Minster Ariel Sharon's pullout plan was approved in November 2004 by a 67-45 vote in the plenum.

Rivlin indicated that he would only support a pullout that would be decided by a regular 50% majority and not a special majority, which the Right wants in order to neutralize the Arab vote.

Rivlin's announcement came just hours after Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom said he would lead the campaign to hold a national referendum.

Putting himself on a collision course with his own prime minister, the foreign minister said Tuesday evening, "A national referendum is the only democratic vehicle that can prevent violence [between Jews] and a situation in which soldiers are refusing orders," Shalom said.

He added that he believed it could be done without disrupting the time frame that calls for 21 Jewish communities in the Gaza Strip and four in northern Samaria to be evacuated this summer.

According to his spokesman, Shalom has long believed in referendums as a democratic vehicle and tried five years ago to initiate a law to that effect.

In the last two weeks, Shalom has spoken in support of a referendum, but his announcement on Tuesday was his strongest to date. He claimed that the timing of his announcement – hours after the Sharm summit – was purely coincidental.

Officials in the Prime Minister's Office on Wednesday indirectly lashed out at Shalom, saying, "Ministers' attempts to promote the idea of a referendum stem from their fear to reach decisions."

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Ophir Paz-Pines said, "All those who call for a referendum, want, in other words, to torpedo the Gaza withdrawal. We have yet to try this mechanism – it might create an even larger tear in the nation. We could lose the momentum if a referendum is held," Paz-Pines told Army Radio

The Lubavitch movement is now officially a political opponent of the Sharon government. Many Chabad rabbis have signed a declaration stating that the adoption of the Road Map means that the Sharon government no longer has "the political right to exist." The declaration was read aloud at Chabad gatherings last night all over the world. Yesha representatives led by Elyakim Ha'etzni and Moshe Leshem took part last night in one of these in Bat Yam, near Tel Aviv. All speakers there called on the NRP and National Union to quit the government.

Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel

In recent years there has been a dramatic growth of Jewish fundamentalism in Israel which has manifested itself in vigorous opposition to the peace process and has played a key role, as well, in the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the murder of 29 Muslims at prayer by the American-born fundamentalist, Baruch Goldstein.

In an important new book, Jewish Fundamentalism In Israel , Israel Shahak and Norton Mezvinksy provide a thorough assessment of this phenomenon in modern Israel. The authors trace the history and development of Jewish fundamentalism, examining the various strains, and identify the messianic tendency which they believe to be the most dangerous.

Israel Shahak, an Israeli and a Holocaust survivor, is a retired professor at the Hebrew University and a leading human rights activist. Norton Mezvinsky is a professor of history at Central Connecticut State University who has written and lectured extensively on the modern Middle East.

The authors point out that “…the adherents of Jewish fundamentalism in Israel oppose equality for all citizens, especially non-Jews.” The respected Israeli sociologist Baruch Kimmerling, citing evidence from a study conducted by other scholars, declared: “The value of the [Jewish] religion, at least in its Orthodox and nationalistic form that prevails in Israel, cannot be squared with democratic values. No other variable—neither nationality, nor attitudes about security, nor social or economic values, nor ethnic descent and education—so influences the attitudes of [Israeli] Jews against democratic values as does religiousity.”

What particularly concerns the authors is the total contempt which Jewish fundamentalists show toward non-Jews. Rabbi Kook the Elder, the revered father of the messianic tendency of Jewish fundamentalism, said, “The difference between a Jewish soul and souls of non-Jews—all of them in all different levels—is greater and deeper than the difference between a human soul and the souls of cattle.”

Rabbi Kook’s entire teaching, which is followed devoutly by, among others, those who have led the settler movement on the occupied West Bank, is based upon the Lurianic Cabbala, the school of Jewish mysticism that dominated Judaism from the late16th to the early 19th century. “One of the basic tenets of the Lurianic Cabbala,” the authors write, “is the absolute superiority of the Jewish soul and body over the non-Jewish soul and body. According to the Lurianic Cabbala, the world was created solely for the sake of Jews; the existence of non-Jews was subsidiary. 

If an influential Christian bishop or Islamic scholar argued that the difference between the superior souls of non-Jews and the inferior souls of Jews was greater than the difference between the human soul and souls of cattle, he would incur the wrath of all and be viewed as an anti-Semite by most Jewish scholars regardless of whatever less meaningful, positive statements he included.”

The scholarly authors of books about Jewish mysticism and the Lurianic Cabbala, such as Gershon Scholem, have, the authors charge, “willfully omitted reference to such ideas. These authors are supreme hypocrites. They are analogous to many authors of books on Stalin and Stalinism. Until recently, people who read only the books written by Stalinists could not know about Stalin’s crimes and would have false notions of the Stalinist regimes and their real ideologies.”

This is what needs to be said about the body: the body of a Jewish person is of a totally different quality from the body of [members] of all nations of the world…A non-Jew’s entire reality is only vanity. It is written, ‘And the strangers shall guard and feed your flocks’ (Isaiah 61:5). The entire creation [of a non-Jew] exists only for the sake of the Jews…”

Rabbi Schneerson always supported Israeli wars and opposed any retreat. In 1974 he strongly opposed the Israeli withdrawal from the Suez area. He promised Israel divine favors if it persisted in occupying the land. After his death, thousands of his Israeli followers played an important role in the election victory of Binyamin Netanyahu.

Therefore, something is special about Jewish DNA…If a Jew needs a liver, can you take the liver of an innocent non-Jew passing by to save him? The Torah would probably permit that. Jewish life has an infinite value.”

Shahak and Mezvinsky point out that, “Changing the words ‘Jewish’ to ‘German’ or ‘Aryan’ and ‘non-Jewish’ to ‘Jewish’ turns the Ginsburgh position into the doctrine that made Auschwitz possible in the past. To a considerable extent the German Nazi (Nasi of Dan) success depended upon that ideology and upon its implications of being widely known early. Disregarding even on a limited scale the potential effects of messianic, Lubavitch and other ideologies could prove to be calamitous…

Rabbi Israel Ariel, a fundamentalist leader, published an atlas that designated all lands that were Jewish and needed to be liberated. This included all areas west and south of the Euphrates River extending through most of Syria, much of Iraq, and present-day Kuwait.

Rabbi Shlomo Aviner, another spokesman, said, “We must live in this land even at the price of war. Moreover, even if there is peace, we must instigate wars of liberation in order to conquer it [the land].”

Mordechai Nisan, a lecturer at the Hebrew University, expressed this view in an official publication of the World Zionist Organization. The murder of Yitzhak Rabin, the authors show, is one in a long line of murders of Jews who followed a path different from that ordained by rabbinic authorities. They cite case after case, from the Middle Ages until the 19th century.

One typical example was the assassination by poison of Rabbi Avraham Cohen in Lemberg, Austria on Sept. 6, 1848.

Assuming his rabbinical position in 1844, Cohen initiated changes in Jewish life. His most important initiative was his attempt to abolish taxes on kosher meat and sabbath candles which Lemberg’s Jews paid to Austrian authorities. These taxes were burdensome for poor Jews but were a source of income for many Orthodox Jewish notables.

The Austrian authorities accepted Cohen’s request and abolished the taxes in March 1848. The five Jewish notables of the town began a total struggle against Rabbi Cohen. Critics argued that the “law of the pursuer” applied to the rabbi. One placard said: “He is one of those Jewish sinners for which the Talmud says their blood is permitted” (that is, every Jew can and should kill them). On Sept. 6, a Jewish assassin successfully entered the rabbi’s home unseen, went to the kitchen and put arsenic poison in a pot of soup that was cooking. Both Rabbi Cohen and his small daughter died. The Hassids and their leaders did not attend the funeral, but celebrated.

It was precisely the same Talmudic laws that caused Rabbi Cohen’s death which were used to murder Yitzhak Rabin. Yigal Amir, Rabin’s assassin, cited the “law of the pursuer” (din rodef) and the “Law of the informer” (din moser). The first law commands every Jew to kill or to wound severely any Jew who is perceived as intending to kill another Jew. According to halachic commentaries, it is not necessary to see such a person pursuing a Jewish victim. It is enough if rabbinic authorities, or even competent scholars, announce that the law of the pursuer applies.

Before the advent of the modern state, Jewish communities were mostly ruled by rabbis who employed arbitrary and cruel methods as bad as those employed by totalitarian regimes. The dearest wish of the current Jewish fundamentalists is to restore this state of affairs.”

This book should be a wake-up call to many Americans, particularly Jewish supporters of Israel who are not aware of the nature of the fundamentalism which is growing strong in that country. This fundamentalism is increasing in influence as a result of Israel’s electoral system, which bestows power to minority parties far beyond their representation in the population. The authors declare: “We believe that awareness is the necessary first step in opposition.” Professors Shahak and Mezvinsky have done a notable service for men and women of goodwill of all religious traditions by pointing to the ideological roadblocks to genuine peace which must be overcome

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An outcast star is zooming out of the Milky Way, the first ever seen escaping the galaxy, astronomers have reported.

 

The star is heading for the emptiness of intergalactic space after being ejected from the heart of the Milky Way following a close encounter with a black hole, said Warren Brown, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics.

 

The outcast is going so fast -- over 1.5 million mph (2.4 million kph) -- that astronomers believe it was lobbed out of the galaxy by the tremendous force of a black hole thought to sit at the Milky Way's Centre. That speed is about twice the velocity needed to escape the galaxy's grip, Brown said by telephone on Tuesday.

 

"We have never before seen a star moving fast enough to completely escape the confines of our galaxy," he said. "We're tempted to call it the outcast star because it was forcefully tossed from its home."

 

The star used to be part of a binary pair, waltzing with its companion star close to the rim of the black hole. In this case, "close" is a relative term; the actual distance was probably about 50 times the 93 million-mile (150 million-km) distance between Earth and the sun.

 

As the two stars twirled around each other, they were pulled faster and faster toward the edge of the black hole, one of those monster drains in space whose gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape once it is consumed.

 

While the companion star was captured by the black hole, the outcast continued on its whirling path around its edge.

 

Objects go faster the closer they get to black holes and this star was probably moving at extraordinary speed, perhaps as high as 20 million mph (32 million kph). That very speed, coupled with the speed of its twirling, sent the outcast zooming toward the edge of the Milky Way and beyond.

 

At this point, the outcast is about 180,000 light-years from Earth, in an outer region of the galaxy known as the halo. A light-year is about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion km), the distance light travels in a year.

Mofaz Refuses to Accept Expulsion Refusers´ Signatures

The international community may be receptive to the disengagement plan and the expulsion of Jews, but 10,000 of the Israeli soldiers who are supposed to do the uprooting say they're not.

The "Homat Magen" (Defensive Shield) Task Force has overseen the collection of the signatures of 10,000 IDF soldiers who say they will not participate in the uprooting, even if ordered to do so. The signatures, of soldiers from both the standing army and the reserves, were gathered by several grassroots organizations over the past several weeks.

Noam Livnat of Elon Moreh, younger brother of Education Minister Limor Livnat, is the driving force behind the campaign, which has become known as the "refusal" drive. He planned to submit the signatures to Defense Minister Sha'ul Mofaz today, but Mofaz refused to meet with him. Livnat therefore deposited the lists with a trustee, Law Professor and TV-and-radio show host Chaim Misgav, and they will be available for public viewing.

Asked if he is sure that all 10,000 of the signatories will actually make good on their word if it comes down to it, Livnat said today, "No, I think there won't be 10,000 - there will be 50,000. Because for every soldier who signed, there were another five who implied that though they didn't want to sign, they could be counted on not to take part in the evacuation. They'll sit and drink coffee, they'll play backgammon, but they won't have a hand in dragging away their brothers and sisters so that the Land of Israel can be given over to the enemy."

Many in the anti-disengagement camp oppose the idea of a public campaign for refusal, fearing that it will irreparably harm the IDF. Livnat says that his hope is not to reach that day at all: "Our goal is to make sure that the military orders to evacuate Gush Katif and the northern Shomron are never given... It's obvious that the establishment won't be able to tolerate a situation in which tens of thousands of people have signed their refusal to carry out these orders. We're not trying to interfere with the evacuation, but rather prevent it from even beginning to occur."

Israeli law states that soldiers must not carry out blatantly illegal orders, and as such, many public figures agree with the call to refuse orders relating to the uprooting of Jews from their homes. This past September, over 150 public figures signed a call for IDF soldiers and police officers to refuse to take part in the disengagement – including Professor Ben-Tzion Netanyahu and Ido Netanyahu, father and brother of Finance Minister Binyamin Netanyahu; two former Prime Ministerial Bureau directors, Uri Elitzur and Yossi Ben-Aharon; Prime Minister Sharon's legendary comrade-in-arms from the 1950s-era Commando Unit 101, Meir Har-Tzion; and a long list of public figures, including scientists and former mayors and Knesset Members.

The petition signed by the 10,000 is entitled, "I will not participate in civil war!" and reads as follows:

I am a proud soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. My mission is to protect the State of Israel and the Nation of Israel against its enemies.

I am liable to be ordered to expel the residents of Gush Katif and northern Shomron, but I won't be able to.

I won't be able to, because I am not able to strike my brother and sisters, my own countrymen.

I won't be able to expel a mother from her home; I won't drag an old woman from her bed; I won't use force against a child.

I won't be able to harm crippled, orphans, and widows, destroy their homes and give their lands to murderers.

I will not strike Jews. I will not uproot that which is planted. I won't destroy property.

I will not take part in destroying greenhouses, dismantling factories, destroying crops in the field.

I won't remove those of my countrymen who have been murdered from their graves, and I will not destroy synagogues.

I will not agree to take part in civil war, even if I receive an order to this effect.

I recognize my obligation to fulfill the army's orders, but if I am ordered by my commanders to do the above, I will view this as a blatantly illegal order, and as a soldier, I will be prevented by the State's laws and the General Staff's orders to fulfill it

Thank G-d, we are blessed every few months with the power of faith and spiritual elevation that can only be experienced by the assembly of hundreds of thousands of Jews gathering together to demonstrate their loyalty and devotion towards the divine process of redemption of the Jewish people in their homeland.

Walking along the wide avenues of the government compound near the Knesset last week, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of my brethren, I became aware of the meaning of this phenomenon. How absurd it is that the necessity of uprooting Jews from their homes is justified by the need for peace with our neighbors. This is the "peace" of being driven from town to town and from country to country. This is the "peace" we endured in exile. This is the "peace" of the ghetto. We have not come back home to Eretz Yisrael to be forced again to flee from town to town.

We are continuing to tread on the classical Zionist path of bringing life to our land and its people, and consequently, a blessing to our neighbors. Our enemies are intent on preventing us from achieving this goal. Their final goal is the uprooting of the reality of Jewish independence in Eretz Yisrael, by terror and destruction.

With great anguish, and yet grave responsibility, I must put this question before our leaders: Have we learned? How can our leaders even think of uprooting Jews from their homes and communities in any part of Eretz Yisrael? Are Jewish homes, in which three generations grew up, to be destroyed? Are synagogues and yeshivas, bastions of prayer and Torah study, G-d forbid, to be abandoned to our enemies?

Eretz Israel is also Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and part of Egypt......do you hear? 

No, my friends, all this cannot happen. We are in the midst of the divine process of Jewish redemption.

"Now is the Time to Demand Pollard's Release"

Labor MK Orit Noked, head of the Knesset caucus for Jonathan Pollard, says that now, as Israel is being asked to release prisoners, is the time for the US to take a similar step and release Pollard.

Noked, who was named a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office when Labor joined the coalition last month, spoke with Arutz-7 last night. "There is now an unusually good opportunity to say to the American Administration that the time has come to release Pollard as well," she said.

 "When Israel is asked to make gestures of this sort - and I'm happy about this opportunity to promote peace and the disengagement - it is appropriate for the U.S. to make the same type of gesture towards Israel."

A-7's Amatzia HaEitan noted that there have been other opportunities for Prime Minister Sharon to make this type of demand, yet he has not done so. "I have never lost hope," Noked said. "It appears that now, after four and a half years of intifada, there is a special feeling that something else is happening – and so I'm trying. The Americans, after all, have a great part in this process. I also feel that there will be more demands made upon us; there is certainly room for us to make this demand."

Pollard is now in his 20th year of a life sentence for passing classified information to U.S. ally Israel.

Noked said that she visited Pollard a year ago, "and we make contact with people close to him. Eli Joseph, a long-time activist on behalf of Pollard – in 2000, he held a five-month hunger strike on his behalf, followed later by another, shorter one – says that Israel must show that its demand for Pollard's release is a moral one.

John Paul has earned right to remain Pope until the end: Canadian cardinal

QUEBEC (CP) - Pope John Paul  should be allowed to die at his post, one of the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church in Canada said Wednesday.

"The Pope has affirmed at several times that he will remain at his post until his last breath," said Marc Cardinal Ouellet, one of three Canadian cardinals who will travel to Rome to choose John Paul's successor when he dies.

"I think after the great service he has given us for 27 years, I think he deserves to die as Pope."

The Pope's illness has renewed debate over whether he should retire. The debate was fuelled when a top-ranked Vatican  official said the decision is up to the Pope. Vatican officials usually avoid such questions.

Ouellet said he received a telephone update on the Pope's condition from the Vatican on Wednesday morning. He said the 84-year-old was improving and should resume his normal activities soon.

The Pope was hospitalized Feb. 1 with breathing problems stemming from a case of the flu. He also suffers from a host of other ailments, including Parkinson's disease 

The Vatican says he will remain in hospital for several more days.

The Pope missed an Ash Wednesday service for the first time since 1978.
